Polytheism vs Animism: Historical belief and academic interpretation
Heathenry is a polytheistic religion centered on distinct gods and goddesses who hold dominion over the natural world, fate, and human life. These deities are personal beings with lineage, character, and mythic roles, forming a clear theistic framework rather than an animistic one.
Nature is sacred because it reflects the presence and power of the gods. Groves, rivers, and stones were revered not for having independent spirits but because they were sanctified through divine presence or ritual. Through the gods, the world gained order and meaning, showing a structured form of worship rather than a belief that all things share equal spirit.
Heathenry also recognizes other spiritual beings such as landvættir and fylgjur, who act within the same divine order. Each serves a role within the greater cosmos, reflecting an organized and hierarchical view of existence.
Animistic elements exist within the religion but operate within the broader polytheistic structure. The gods govern nature, and the natural world reveals their will and creative power. What modern scholars interpret as the personification of natural forces was, to our ancestors, the recognition of living divine beings who shaped and maintained the world. This understanding reflects a coherent theology grounded in divine reality, not symbolic interpretation.
Heathenry is grounded in reverence, law, and divine hierarchy. It sees nature as sacred through its bond with the gods, not through the belief that every object holds its own spirit. The world is holy because it was created through divine sacrifice and reflects the presence and order of the gods. To call Heathenry animistic is to miss its true nature as a faith rooted in divine order, living tradition, and the active relationship between the gods and their folk.

Eating horses was never officially forbidden by the Church, but many medieval Christian sources called the practice imp culture–or related to Satan–and linked it to the “barbaric” practices of non-Christians.

Samhain is the Celtic holy day dedicated to the harvest, as well as the spirits & their blessed ancestors.
It is stated that the veil between this world & the otherworld is thinest at this time, allowing many spirits to roam around freely.
This holy day was so powerful that the christians could not simply get rid of it & so renamed it into all hollows eve, which precedes all saints day. The dressing up as spirits & roaming around the town is extremely reminiscent of the older ancestral beliefs of the Celtic folk. Parallels can certainly be drawn between the halloween festivals & other Celtic festivals, such as those pertaining to the Meri Lwyd.
Either way I want to give a special blessing to all of our Celtic Revivalists in the audience. Your path is difficult, but it makes you the strongest. May your Gods, Lugh, Dagda, Morrigan & all of your blessed Gods & Goddesses guide you this day and everyday. May your ancestors of the Emerald Isles come to visit you give you love, comfort & guidance.

Some decades ago, historians of religions argued that Adam’s description of the sanctuary at Uppsala, and the cult activities carried out there, was reliable since it was contemporary with the events it described. Indeed, Adam built his narrative on second-hand information, but his informants were eyewitnesses.
Recent research is more skeptical. Scholars now argue that Adam’s description of Uppsala is permeated with rhetorical adornments and missionary strategies. According to Anders Hultgård, the text is a result of a literary process in which the informants’ reports have been reworked by rhetorical embellishment, ethnographic and polemic clichés such as euhemerism as well as subjectivity.

The law made an exception for people who were lost in the wilderness, without food for seven days. The prescriptions stipulated in the Borgarþing Law are interesting, since they clearly indicate that eating these animals was regarded as pagan practice. The law states thus: “. . . when someone eats one of these [animals] without necessity then he has forfeited fortune and peace, land and property, and must leave for a heathen land and never return to where Christians are.” The phrase at fare a land hæiðit is significant, since it states that the custom of eating horse, dog or cat was associated to pagan practice.

For nearly 1,000 years before Zoroaster, those that lived in & near the Iranian plateau followed the rigveda. In there, as most are aware, Indra is the king of their Old Gods who establishes the order of the realms. This changed when Zoroaster flipped the pantheon, worshipping evil as good & good now being evil.
