The court also imposed a fine of ₽400 million on the defendant and deprived him of the right to hold public office for a period of 10 years. The former governor was ordered to repay the amount of bribes received - over ₽20 million. Smirnov admitted his guilt.
The former head of the Kursk region was detained in April 2025 on suspicion of fraud. He, along with his deputy was charged with fraud amounting to ₽1 billion in the construction of fortifications in the border area.
