Ukraine warns of WW3 ahead of long-stalled Congress aid vote
Ukraine's prime minister has told the BBC there will be a "Third World War" if Ukraine loses its conflict with Russia, as he urged the US Congress to pass a long-stalled foreign aid bill.
Denys Shmyhal expressed "careful optimism" that US lawmakers would pass the hotly contested measure, which has $61bn (£49bn) earmarked for Kyiv.
The House of Representatives is set to vote on the package this Saturday.
The proposal includes funding for Israel as well as the Indo-Pacific. read more

After seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen were killed by the Israeli army in Gaza on 1 April, US President Joe Biden seemed finally to lose patience with his troublesome ally.
On the same day, Israel attacked the Iranian diplomatic compound in Damascus, killing a senior general, at least six other officers, and violating legal conventions that prohibit attacks on embassies. read more
Sydney church stabbing: Bishop attacked during sermon
A bishop and several other people have been stabbed during a sermon in Sydney that was being streamed online, local media report.
The incident reportedly happened on Monday night in the suburb of Wakeley.
Police responded to reports that a number of people had been stabbed but said none of their injuries were life-threatening.
They added that a man had been arrested and was helping with their inquiries. The motive for the attack is unknown. read more
US tells Israel it won't join any retaliatory strikes on Iran
The White House has warned Israel that the US will not participate in any retaliatory strikes on Iran, senior administration officials have said.
Over 300 drones and missiles were fired at Israel overnight, which Iran said was in response to an 1 April strike on its consulate in Syria.
Almost all weapons were shot down by Israeli, US and allied forces before they reached their targets.
Officials said Joe Biden urged Israel to consider its response "carefully". read more
Iranian troops accused of seizing Israel-linked ship
Iran has been accused of seizing a commercial ship with links to Israel early on Saturday morning as it passed through the Strait of Hormuz.
The MSC Aries was boarded by Iranian special forces about 50 miles (80km) off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, a statement from MSC said.
Footage obtained by Reuters news agency appeared to show troops rappelling onto the vessel from a helicopter.

An Indian actor running for election as a candidate for the ruling party has been forced to deny eating beef.
Kangana Ranaut, a vocal supporter of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said the claims by her opponents are "shameful" and "baseless rumours".
The issue of beef consumption is highly sensitive in India as cows are considered sacred by Hindus, the country's largest religious group.
Some BJP politicians have pushed for bans on cattle slaughter. read more
Greta Thunberg: Activist arrested at Hague climate protest
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has been arrested by Dutch police at a protest in The Hague.
The 21-year-old joined hundreds of protesters in a march against fossil fuel subsidies on Saturday.
The protest devolved into a standoff as dozens of police officers, some on horseback, attempted to stop protesters from blocking a main road.
Local police put Ms Thunberg on a bus full of demonstrators and she was driven away from the scene. read more

Taiwan: Rescue efforts continue after 700 injured in earthquake
Rescue efforts are under way in Taiwan after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the island's eastern coast, killing at least nine and injuring more than 800.
Some 127 people are trapped in collapsed tunnels and on mountainous roads along the rugged coastline.
The epicentre was 18km (11 miles) south of Hualien city, but strong tremors were felt all the way in the capital Taipei, more than 100km away.
This is the strongest quake to hit Taiwan in 25 years. read more

Dubai airport re-opens after UAE suffers heavy rain
Operations at Dubai International Airport remain severely disrupted after heavy rains battered the United Arab Emirates and neighbouring countries.
The storm pounded the UAE on Tuesday, flooding roads and the sections of the busy international airport.
Flash floods have now killed 20 people in Oman and one in the UAE.
Some inbound flights have resumed on Thursday, but on the whole Dubai international airport, a major travel hub, is struggling to function. read more
Whistleblower 'would not' put family on Boeing 787 jet
Boeing is expected to face criticism at a US Senate hearing from a whistleblower who says he feared its planes could fall apart mid-air.
Engineer Sam Salehpour told NBC News he had raised concerns about the 787 Dreamliner, which Boeing dismissed.
The company is under scrutiny after a number of safety incidents, including a mid-air panel blow-out in January.
But it has sought to defend its practices, and says it is co-operating with the Senate inquiry. read more

The United States and the European Union say they are looking at imposing further sanctions on Iran, after its attack on Israel at the weekend.

Israel has urged its allies to sanction Tehran's missile programme.

Israel's Netanyahu says defences are 'ready' as Iran attacks
Iran has launched aerial drones and missiles at Israel, marking a widely anticipated reprisal attack.
Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) said the attack was aimed at "specific targets".
Israeli military sources said more than 100 drones had been launched. The US had shot some down, CBS News reported.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they were on high alert and "monitoring all targets". Israel's prime minster convened a meeting of his war cabinet. read more

Israel-Gaza war: Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh says three sons killed in air strike
Hamas's political leader Ismail Haniyeh has confirmed that three of his sons and four of his grandchildren were killed in an air strike in Gaza.
Hamas-linked media said the car his sons were travelling in was hit in Al-Shati camp near Gaza City.
Haniyeh said that the incident would not change Hamas's demands in talks aimed at reaching a ceasefire deal.

A new drone attack on Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia power plant has raised the risk of a "major nuclear accident", the UN's atomic watchdog has warned.

The giant Russian-held nuclear plant, with six reactors, is on the frontline of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

An "alliance of authoritarian powers" is working more closely together against Western democracies, the head of Nato has warned.
Jens Stoltenberg told the BBC that Russia, Iran, China and North Korea are increasingly aligned.
He also said he was confident allies of the Nato military alliance would agree a long-term funding deal for Ukraine by July.

Rescuers in Taiwan are working to reach more than 600 stranded people, a day after the island experienced its worst earthquake in 25 years.
One survivor has recounted how tremors unleashed rockslides "like bullets" around the coal mine he was working at.
The 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit near the eastern county of Hualien, killing nine and injuring more than 1,000.
Some stuck in tunnels and near a national park have been rescued by helicopters, but 34 are still missing. read more

World Central Kitchen (WCK) founder José Andrés has accused Israeli forces in Gaza of targeting his aid workers "systematically, car by car".
Monday's strike which killed seven members of his staff was not a mistake, he said, repeating that Israeli forces had been told of their movements.
WCK workers from Australia, Canada, Poland, the UK and the US were killed as well as their Palestinian colleague.

World Central Kitchen halts operations in Gaza after strike kills staff
International food charity World Central Kitchen (WCK) is suspending its operations in Gaza following the death of seven of its workers in an Israeli air strike.
The charity said those killed were part of an aid convoy that was leaving a warehouse in central Gaza on Monday.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it was conducting a "thorough review" into the incident.
Gaza's Hamas-run media office also blamed Israel. read more
