Hamas says it will postpone hostage release, blaming Israel
A spokesman for the armed wing of Hamas says the group is postponing the next scheduled release of Israeli hostages, blaming what he says are Israeli violations of the ceasefire deal.
Three hostages held in Gaza are due to be freed on Saturday in exchange for more Palestinian prisoners held in Israel.
Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz called the Hamas announcement a "complete violation of the ceasefire agreement". read more
Palestinians and Arab states reject Trump's Gaza takeover proposal
The Palestinian president has said he strongly rejects President Donald Trump's proposal for the US to take over Gaza and permanently resettle the 2.1 million Palestinians living there.
"We will not allow the rights of our people... to be infringed on," Mahmoud Abbas stressed, warning that Gaza was "an integral part of the State of Palestine" and forced displacement would be a serious violation of international law.

US judge temporarily blocks Trump's freeze on federal grants and loans
A US judge temporarily halted President Donald Trump's order to freeze hundreds of billions of dollars in federal grants and loans, minutes before it was set to come into effect on Tuesday.
Judge Loren AliKhan's order to pause the plan until next Monday at 17:00 EST (22:00 GMT) came in response to a lawsuit filed earlier in the day by a group of organisations representing grant recipients.
The lawsuit claims the White House's temporary freezing of already approved funding violates the law. read more
India investigates 17 'mysterious' deaths in same village
Officials are investigating the "mysterious" deaths of 17 people - most of them children - in the same village in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
The deaths, including those of 12 children, have occurred in the remote village of Badhal in Jammu's Rajouri district since 7 December.
The victims initially displayed symptoms similar to food poisoning but suddenly lost consciousness, health officials said. read more
Eight Palestinians killed as Israeli forces launch major operation in Jenin
At least eight Palestinians have been killed and 35 injured by Israeli security forces during a major operation in Jenin in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry says.
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the military, police and Shin Bet security service had launched an "extensive and significant" operation to "defeat terrorism" in Jenin, which is seen as a stronghold of Palestinian armed groups.
Palestinian media said Israeli forces moved into Jenin and its refugee camp following several drone strikes. read more

Joe Biden has pre-emptively pardoned Covid response chief Anthony Fauci and the members of the 6 January riot investigation to prevent what he called "unjustified... politically motivated prosecutions".
The outgoing US president said: "Our nation owes these public servants a debt of gratitude for their tireless commitment."

Israel's cabinet approves Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal
Israel's government has approved the new Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal with Hamas, paving the way for it to take effect on Sunday.
The decision came after hours of discussions that continued late into the night. Two far-right ministers voted against the deal.
The security cabinet earlier recommended ratifying the agreement, saying it "supports the achievement of the objectives of the war", according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office. read more

Israeli air strikes are continuing in Gaza ahead of the ceasefire agreement and hostage deal with Hamas, which comes into effect on Sunday, subject to the Israeli cabinet's approval.
The strikes killed 73 people overnight, following the announcement of the deal, Gaza's Hamas-run civil defence agency reported.

ChatGPT creator Sam Altman's sister, Ann Altman, has filed a lawsuit alleging that he regularly sexually abused her between 1997 and 2006.
The lawsuit, which was filed on 6 January in a US District Court in the Eastern District of Missouri, alleges that the abuse started when she was three and Mr Altman was 12.
Mr Altman, who is the chief executive of OpenAI, the firm behind artificial intelligence (AI) software ChatGPT, denied the claims in a joint statement on X with his mother and two brothers. read more

President Emmanuel Macron has named centrist leader François Bayrou as France's next prime minister, in a bid to end months of political turmoil.

A 26-year-old man has been charged with murder over last week's fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City.

Judge blocks Trump plan to put thousands of USAID staff on leave
A judge has temporarily blocked President Donald Trump from placing 2,200 workers at the US Agency for International Development (USAID) on paid leave, hours before it was due to happen.
Judge Carl Nichols issued a "limited" temporary restraining order, in response to a last-minute lawsuit filed by two unions trying to save the agency.

US President Donald Trump says he has signed a full and unconditional pardon for Ross Ulbricht, who operated Silk Road, the dark web marketplace where illegal drugs were sold.
Ulbricht was convicted in 2015 in New York in a narcotics and money-laundering conspiracy and sentenced to life in prison.

Police probe if blast at Trump hotel is linked to New Orleans attack
Police in the US are investigating whether an explosion outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas is linked to the deadly car-ramming attack in New Orleans.
The driver of a Tesla Cybertruck was killed and seven other people were injured in Las Vegas after the vehicle - filled with fuel canisters and firework mortars - exploded. Officials said all injuries were minor.
In the New Orleans attack, a 42-year-old US citizen is believed to have driven a pick-up truck into a crowd on a busy street, killing 15 people and injuring 35, before being shot dead by police. read more

French government collapses in no-confidence vote
The French government has collapsed after Prime Minister Michel Barnier was ousted in a no-confidence vote.
MPs voted overwhelmingly in support of the motion against him - just three months after he was appointed by President Emmanuel Macron.
