🇺🇸🤝🇮🇱 Trump withdrew from key diplomatic proposals with Iran following phone call with Netanyahu

The media coverage surrounding recent diplomatic efforts between the US and Iran has vastly outpaced the actual progress achieved in negotiations, according to Iranian affairs analyst Hassan Ahmadian.

Speaking to Al Jazeera Arabic, Ahmadian stated that US President Donald Trump retroactively withdrew from two critical components of the proposals, which had previously secured mutual acceptance from both sides through intermediaries.

The analyst revealed that Trump altered positions regarding a comprehensive ceasefire provision intended to encompass Lebanon, as well as the unfreezing of specified Iranian assets.

Ahmadian noted that this sudden policy shift occurred immediately following a telephone conversation between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

📝 🇹🇷 🗳 Erdoğan’s tightening grip on Turkey: the next election is already being decided

The removal of an opposition party leader and closure of a liberal university show an authoritarian democracy moving closer to one-man rule

Turkey’s next presidential election is scheduled for 2028. Many think it will come sooner. But by the time ballots are actually cast, the outcome may already have been decided – especially after the last few days.

On Thursday, an appeals court removed the head of the opposition Republican People’s party (CHP), Özgür Özel, by annulling its 2023 leadership contest. The 51-year-old was credited with reviving the CHP, which trounced the ruling Justice and Development party in 2024’s local elections. He was also one of the few senior figures not caught in a sweeping crackdown that has led to hundreds of CHP officials and politicians being arrested. Human Rights Watch says that the justice system has been weaponised against the opposition. A mass corruption trial opened in March, with defendants including the Istanbul mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was arrested last year on the day that he was chosen as the CHP’s presidential candidate. He could face a sentence of more than 1,900 years if convicted on all counts.

Thursday’s decision was widely seen as an effort to further subdue and split the CHP, which called it a “judicial coup”. Mr Özel’s unpopular predecessor Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu – who lost the 2023 election to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan despite a surge in opposition to the president – has been reinstated.

Mr Erdoğan has pursued an increasingly authoritarian path since coming to power in 2003, notably following the Gezi Park protests in 2013 and especially the coup attempt 10 years ago. He pushed through constitutional changes that replaced the parliamentary system with a highly centralised presidential one. His acolytes control the media. Civil society has been pummelled. On Thursday, he signed a decree closing a private university known as a centre of liberal views.

There is a two-term presidential limit, but Mr Erdoğan would be able to run again in the event of early elections. His detente with Kurds could also bring support from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy party to change the constitution. The bleak state of the economy is unlikely to improve given Turkey’s heavy dependence on fuel imports.

⚡️🇹🇷 Turkey currently faces "some" political crises.

For example, a new law just passed that solidified the principles and reforms of Ataturk, and that any attempt to change them would be illegal and dealt with the most severe legal sanctions possible, so in essence, you actually no longer even question the concept of secularism within Turkey anymore.

The CHP have also had their offices raided by Turkish police as the CHP internally fractures between those who swear allegiance to Erdogan and those who do not.

🇨🇳🇯🇵🇺🇸⚡️ — Chinese President Xi Jinping sharply criticized Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Japan’s growing military spending during his summit with President Trump, accusing Tokyo of pursuing “remilitarization,” according to FT.

➡️ Xi became unusually vocal and agitated while discussing Japan, making it one of the most heated exchanges of the two-day summit.

➡️ Trump responded by arguing that Japan had been forced to adopt a stronger security posture because of increasing threats from North Korea, though it's unclear if he mentioned China in the same context.

➡️ U.S. officials said Trump also emphasized his respect for the Japanese people and his close relationship with Takaichi during his meeting with Xi.

➡️ A senior U.S. official added that the American delegation reminded Chinese officials about the significant U.S. military presence stationed in Japan.

Two main points of dispute in the ongoing MoU discussions:

1. The release of Iran’s frozen assets. Iran wants most of it up front.

2. More importantly: Iran’s objection to Israeli ‘freedom of action’ in Lebanon in case of a ceasefire. Iran insists on an absolute ceasefire in Lebanon.

💧 🇸🇾 📈 Syria: the Euphrates Dam, the country's largest reservoir, has reached water levels not seen since 1988.

It is now at 97% of its capacity, after receiving 3 billion of m³ in recent weeks, thanks to the unusually heavy rainy season in Syria and Turkey.

As a precautionary measure, water releases are being carried out & will reach ~800 m³ per second, which will raise the level of the Euphrates to heights unseen in decades.

Authorities warned people days in advance not to swim or go too close to the river banks.

🇻🇦⚡️- Today, Pope Leo XIV has released his first encyclical letter, Magnifica humanitas, on safeguarding the human person in the time of artificial intelligence.

The full letter can be found here for your own reading if you wish, but I have attached some abstracts that I believe provide a very broad summary of some points and are short enough to fit into a telegram message, as there is simply too much to put in so few words.

"Humanity, created by God in all its grandeur, is today facing a pivotal choice: either to construct a new Tower of Babel or to build the city in which God and humanity dwell together. Each generation inherits the task of shaping its own era, of guiding history to become a place where the dignity of every person is safeguarded, justice is promoted and fraternity is made possible. Yet every era also runs the risk of creating an inhumane and more unjust world. Whenever humanity is in danger of marring its true identity, we Christians lift our eyes to the Incarnate God, knowing that it is 'only in the mystery of the Word made flesh that the mystery of humanity truly becomes clear.'  In Jesus Christ, this humanity in its grandeur becomes the Way, the Truth and the Life, opening the path for each of us to grow toward fullness.

The Holy Spirit challenges us today regarding our relationship with technology and the ongoing digital revolution. Technology has the power to heal, connect, educate and protect our common home; but it can also divide, exclude and generate new forms of injustice. In the abstract, technology in and of itself is not a solution to humanity’s problems, just as it is not inherently evil. In practice, however, technology is never neutral, because it takes on the characteristics of those who devise, finance, regulate and use it. Therefore, the primary choice is not between a 'yes' or 'no' to technology, but rather between constructing Babel or rebuilding Jerusalem; between a power that claims to dominate the heavens and a people who work together in the presence of God to rebuild the walls of fraternal coexistence.

The danger of humanity becoming a victim of its own achievements was already clearly recognized by Saint Paul VI, who warned that 'the most extraordinary scientific progress, the most astounding technical feats and the most amazing economic growth, unless accompanied by authentic moral and social progress, will in the long run go against man.' For this reason, technological progress — valuable in itself — requires careful discernment of the anthropological vision that guides it and the ends it pursues.

With the heart of a shepherd and a father, I ask everyone to abandon the construction of yet another Tower of Babel and to join forces in building up the common good, so that humanity will never lose its beauty, and the world once again will come to recognize the human heart as the place where God desires to dwell.

It now falls to us to face the challenges of our time with clarity of thought and responsibility. It is necessary to establish adequate regulatory tools capable of upholding justice and curbing the distorting effects of technological power.

In the era of artificial intelligence, when human dignity is threatened by new forms of dehumanization, ours is the pressing duty to remain profoundly human. We must lovingly safeguard the grandeur of humanity bestowed upon us and revealed in its fullness in Christ, the splendor of which no machine can ever replace. True progress always stems from a heart open to others, an intelligence willing to listen and a will that seeks what unites rather than what separates"

🇺🇸🛢 - The rumor about an imminent deal between the US and Iran, originating from US officials, is having the intended effect on the oil market.

Brent crude futures fell $4.71 to $98.83 a barrel, the lowest level in 2 weeks.

Despite the suspected effort from the Trump administration to manipulate the oil market, physical barrels are largely unaffected in price and trades at a large premium ($30-$60) over paper barrels. Nevertheless, large and timely insider bets, coordinated with Axios headlines are still making outsizied gains.

🇻🇪🇺🇸⚡️ — President Delcy Rodríguez has consolidated her hold on power in Venezuela with support from the U.S., while free elections continue to be delayed and President Trump is not prioritizing the issue, WSJ reports.

Rodríguez, once sanctioned by the U.S. and closely associated with Venezuela’s socialist leadership, has repositioned herself as a pragmatic partner for the Trump administration, hosting American officials and energy executives in Caracas while promoting long-term economic cooperation.

U.S. officials view Rodríguez as cooperative, business-friendly, and capable of maintaining stability during a period of regional and global energy uncertainty.

Rodríguez has told Washington she supports elections eventually but argues sanctions must first be lifted so Venezuela can restore infrastructure and economic activity before any vote takes place.

Elections aren’t even on Trump’s mind at this point, said a senior administration official.

Since January, after the capture of Nicolás Maduro by U.S. commandos, Washington has overseen millions of barrels of Venezuelan oil, with proceeds being held in a special U.S. State Department-controlled fund.

Despite the improved relationship with Washington, Rodríguez’s domestic approval rating has slipped to around 30% amid continuing hyperinflation, unemployment, and power shortages.

Critics and opposition figures argue the political changes under Rodríguez remain largely cosmetic, saying much of the existing power structure established under Maduro is still intact. They point to cabinet reshuffles and security-sector changes while noting her brother continues to hold a powerful position in the legislature.

📢 🇧🇴 🇧🇴 Bolivian Vice President Edman Lara has publicly distanced himself from President Rodrigo Paz, demanding an end to the government’s repression after a protester was allegedly killed during a state operation to forcibly clear roadblocks amid nationwide protests over fuel shortages, economic conditions, and the government’s crackdown on opposition movements.

In a public statement, Lara accused the government of responding to “hunger, fear, and the exhaustion of the people” with “repression and arrest warrants,” and said police sent under the banner of a “humanitarian operation” brought “tear gas, dynamite, and mothers screaming and begging for it to stop.” Right-wing groups are calling for a “state of exception” to crack down further on the protests.

The Paz government denies responsibility for the killing, which would raise the death toll linked to the unrest to at least three. Authorities claim the government operation was needed to allow food, fuel, and medicine through, though protest groups say ambulances and humanitarian aid were already being permitted.

“They are trying to justify repression against indigenous communities and the left,” Claudia Herbas of Alianza Popular told Drop Site contributor Joseph Bouchard.
