Gwadar looks north

Pakistan took another step last week that points to a shift in Islamabad’s policy toward multipolarism and Eurasian integration, despite the risk of displeasing Washington.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) Talha Burki disclosed that Pakistan was keen to become part of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s vision by linking the INSTC with Gwadar Port. Federal Minister Rana Mubashir Iqbal and Talha Burki were addressing the inaugural session of “Russia–Islamic World: KazanForum” in Kazan, Russia, on 13 May.

“Pakistan is not formally establishing a new group with Iran, Russia, and China, but it is deepening strategic ties with all three, particularly through economic and security cooperation,” Azhar says.

He also says this alignment reflects Pakistan’s desire to diversify its foreign policy under regional instability and US pressure:

“The US refrains from strong pressure due to Pakistan’s strategic value in regional stability, counterterrorism efforts, and its role in facilitating dialogue – especially between Iran and other nations. Additionally, Pakistan's balancing act helps manage tensions in South Asia and the Middle East [West Asia] without escalating conflicts.” 

Amir says Pakistan has military and economic collaboration with China, and Washington knows this well. He also says that the US has no concerns about transit facilities to Iran or the extension of the INSTC to Gwadar because Washington competes with China, not Iran or Russia. “Pakistan employs sometimes covert and sometimes overt diplomacy depending on the situation, which also benefits the US,” he stated.

🌧☣️ Toxic Fumes From Tehran Oil Fires Affected Area Size of Italy

When several oil depots were bombed by Israeli guided munitions on March 7th the blaze produced toxic fumes detectable across an area the size of Italy, according to fresh research.

Measurements from two different satellites show the fires lasted about two days and released a total of roughly 29.8 kilotons of sulfur dioxide that spread across some 300,000 square kilometers (115,830 square miles), according to a paper by Chinese researchers published on Tuesday on Advances in Atmospheric Sciences.

Sulfur dioxide, which also occurs naturally in volcanic eruptions, has strong irritant and corrosive properties and is a major precursor of acid rain. When inhaled in large amounts and for long periods of time it poses a major threat to human health and to the environment. The latest analysis adds to a growing body of research based on satellite data that shows the impacts of the current conflict in the Middle East on the environment.

Israel’s strikes on Tehran in March were met with displeasure among US officials amid concerns the attacks could backfire strategically by angering Iranian civilians, Axios has reported. US Senator Lindsey Graham, a firm supporter of the war, asked Israel to “please be cautious about what targets you select.” Oil infrastructure, he said, will be essential to Iran’s recovery “when this regime collapses.”

The study published on Tuesday tracked sulfur dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere from space, rather than measuring pollution at ground level. “These figures allow direct comparison with other events, such as moderate volcanic eruptions or major refinery fires,” said Yin. “The atmospheric consequences of this event are significant but short-lived.”

• 26 ships passed through the Strait of Hormoz after the IRGC gave them permission.

Receiving permission and coordinating for passage through the Strait of Hormoz is mandatory. As previously announced, passage through other routes is considered a disruption and will be dealt with.

• Last night, several ships attempted to enter the Persian Gulf illegally by tampering with and turning off their navigation systems. After several rounds of radio warnings, IRGC Navy forces stopped 2 of them in place, while the rest were forced to turn back.

• The terrorist US military in the region violated the ceasefire by firing several missiles at empty areas of Bandar Abbas Airport, which caused no damage. In response to this aggression, the US base from which the attack originated was struck in retaliation.

• If this action by the terrorist US military is repeated, it will face our harsh response.

Flight-tracking data also shows American drones and surveillance aircraft operating around Cuba for months. The USS Kearsarge amphibious group, which can carry about 2,500 Marines, is currently near Virginia with its escorts as it prepares for deployment and could take the place of vessels rotating out.

Delaware Superior Court Judge Craig Karsnitz said the town of Fenwick Island was not diluting human votes by allowing companies ​and other legal entities that own property to cast votes in municipal elections.

These "legal entities" and corporations make up about 12% of registered voters in the town.

In total Delaware has far more ​corporations chartered in the state than residents.

Judge Karsnitz rejected the constitutional arguments of the ACLU, including the claim that "entity" or corporate voting dilutes the political power of living people.

"Delaware, home to more corporations than people, is a fitting place for reality to outpace satire. The state constitutional provisions expressly enshrining corporate personhood reflect Delaware’s budgetary reliance on the billions in fees it raises annually from the more than 2 million business entities chartered there."

🇺🇸⚡️ — A former senior CIA officer with top-secret clearance, David Rush, has been charged with theft of public money after investigators found roughly 300 gold bars worth over $40 million hidden in his home, along with about $2 million in cash and 35 luxury watches, mostly Rolexes, NBC News reports.

Rush claimed the funds and gold bars were needed for “work-related expenses,” including foreign currency and tens of millions of dollars in gold requested between November and March. Investigators say only part of the requested assets were found in storage near his office, while the rest was kept at his home for personal gain.

Rush was also accused of lying about his background for nearly two decades, falsely claiming degrees from Clemson University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, training at the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, working as a Navy pilot, and serving as a thesis adviser at the Air Force Institute of Technology.

The case began after a CIA internal investigation uncovered possible legal violations and was referred by CIA Director John Ratcliffe for criminal investigation.
