Title within reach after 3-0 victory over Mainz

Bayern Munich - FSV Mainz 05 Photo by Daniel Löb/picture alliance via Getty Images The English striker will be absent next week at RB Leipzig due to yellow card accumulation. Bayern Munich just needs one more win to officially secure this year’s Bundesliga title and will have that chance next week in a road trip to face RB Leipzig. One player who won’t be on the field, however, is superstar striker Harry Kane.Kane earned a yellow in the dying seconds of the first half of Saturday’s contest vs. Mainz 05, which the Bavarians won handily 3-0, for holding onto the ball too long and denying the visitors a free kick. The score was 2-0 at the time, and Kane — who is still on the hunt for his first ever trophy — was not best pleased with the call.In post-match comments captured by Bild, Kane put referee Bastian Dankert fully on blast.“First of all, I think it was a crazy decision. It’s never a yellow card. Unfortunately, sometimes people come to the Allianz Arena and try to make a name for themselves,” Kane said in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “That’s why I’m really disappointed that I got the yellow card, because of course I knew I already had four. “And secondly, I think the rule is crazy anyway. Five yellow cards in 34 games means a suspension. That’s crazy. It should be like in the Premier League [yellow cards are reset after 19 matchdays]. I’m missing an important game because I received a yellow card in the first game of the season. That doesn’t make sense. Maybe they should reconsider that for the future. “It’s kind of my story that I’ll miss the game in Leipzig. But no worries, I’ll celebrate more than anyone else.” Teammate Aleksandar Pavlović confirmed Kane’s displeasure.“He was upset in the dressing room about getting a yellow card for something like that. It annoyed him, but we’ll do everything for him to secure the title in Leipzig without him,” Pavlović said in comments captured by Tz journalist Flo Schimak (via @iMiaSanMia). What do you think? Was that too harsh on Harry? In any case, it will be one more player down for Bayern in a game where points cannot be taken for granted. But it is now very possible that the ex-Tottenham man will celebrate his first title in a game he cannot even play in.

FC Bayern München v 1. FSV Mainz 05 - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images The celebrations will have to wait another week... Bayern Munich took another step towards the imminent Bundesliga title by recording a 3-0 win against Mainz 05 thanks to goals from Leroy Sané, a rapid shot from Michael Olise, and a mind-boggling header from Eric Dier. Here are some observations from the game.A note on decision making In the first half, Bayern were often making too many passes around the box that yielded promise but never became much. The ability to get the ball into dangerous positions and the inability to do anything of worth with it have been issues that have long plagued this team, but they seemed unusually apparent in the first half. It almost seemed like a game from Julian Nagelsmann’s season with Sadio Mané, where Bayern lacked a direct goalscorer and the team had to recalibrate its attacking options and mechanisms.Bayern lost out on plenty of potential scoring opportunities because of a lack of decision-making and effective penetration of the box in the first half. Joshua Kimmich often made side passes when there were better options, and that slowed down the play: an incessant problem in his game. Bayern changed their approach at halftime, opting for more direct attacks, but that didn’t yield anything of worth either. In the second half, a larger issue was the success rate of Bayern’s forwards in 1v1s or simply even on the break. Multiple golden opportunities were missed throughout the game due to questionable decision-making, and it simply has to be better if any of the forwards plan on extending their contracts. Serge Gnabry, for example, had a deeply forgettable game after starting as an attacking midfielder. Bayern needs to be more clinical and direct in bigger games.Fluid football: simple, easy, and calmBayern played calmly and got the job done exactly as intended. The backline saw some interesting transitions throughout the game, but both fullbacks did exactly what was expected of them and helped advance the attack on both flanks. Konrad Laimer, in particular, had a game worthy of deep praise. He was uncompromising defensively while also being all over the pitch. The Austrian advanced the ball extremely well, picking up two assists while overlapping wonderfully with Michael Olise. It was a team that played with great composure on the ball, and that is a very promising indicator of its mentality. Aleksandar Pavlović in particular did this well, transitioning into chance creation effortlessly while bossing the midfield. This is the sort of reaction and calm playstyle you expect after a tough loss in the Champions League. It shows that the team absolutely has what it takes to succeed in the long run.Urbig is the futureThere have been a lot of murmurs around Jonas Urbig’s ability and whether he belongs at FC Bayern or not. Today’s game saw him follow up his first Bundesliga clean sheet for Bayern with his second, and proved unequivocally that he has what it takes. He made some fantastic saves while maintaining impeccable distribution and a commanding presence in goal. Bayern have hit the jackpot. On the other hand, it raises questions about Manuel Neuer’s expensive extension and also makes fans wonder whether Urbig will get enough starting time next season.Leroy Sané: Is the extension the right decision?Bayern Munich’s reported extension of Leroy Sané comes as he records his personal best Bundesliga goal tally (10) in what has been a shaky season for the winger. The game effectively encapsulated his career at Bayern, showcasing his very best and his very worst. Sané scored, was an extremely threatening presence, and used his speed and agility well. On the other hand, he also missed a ton of scorable chances, most notably the one that hit the post when it looked certain to be a goal. But that raises the question: is it the right choice to extend him? He has his clearly good traits, but does that justify a renewal, especially considering the inconsistency he…

FSV Mainz 05 - Bundesliga Müller’s 500! | Photo by Stefan Matzke - sampics/Getty Images As we go one step closer to the Meisterschale, here are the players who made it happen today. Bayern Munich faced Mainz 05 at home with all the hopes of bagging the Meisterschale Dahoam. But, despite winning 3-0, the Bavarians have not won the Bundesliga yet, for Bayer Leverkusen won 2-0 against FC Augsburg.History tends to repeat itself. In this case, history says that Bayern has rarely ever bagged the ‘Schale from a home game. One will simply have to wait until next week’s game against RB Leipzig. Until then, let’s discuss who deserves a shout-out from tonight’s game.Jersey Swap: Jonathan Burkardt The Mainz skipper leaves Munich with a heavy heart and several what-ifs, but he was their best attacking threat. His close range miss from the first half was certainly forgettable. While it was not his best game, he bravely led the Mainz side in their pursuit for a European spot. Der Kaiser: Eric DierI wish this award could be given to the entire defense but if only one had to be chosen, it would be Eric Dier. The Englishman was in the right place at the right time, both in his defensive pursuits and his offensive efforts. He was a rock in the defense, cleaning up after any errors made. It was a fantastic game by the Englishman as he often helped get the ball back in the attack as well. His goal in the second half was otherworldly — a corner from Michael Olise which he then headed in to make it 3-0 was a work of art. A result of quick thinking and a well-aimed header indeed!Der Fußballgott: Joshua KimmichMuch to the chagrin of my readers, I will, yet again nominate Joshua Kimmich for Der Fußballgott. I am aware we have only two midfielders. This means choosing between what is usually two mediocre performances and decide the less mediocre one gets an award. But the Meisterschale is not insignificant because only Bayern and Leverkusen are competing for it, right? Both teams make mistakes, have their falls from grace mid-season and yet rise to the occasion inevitably; and one makes it work, while the other misses the mark by a tiny margin. Kimmich performed pretty well in yet another outing as captain. He has not much to speak for his game — granted he did not make any significant strides in attack or defense but there were no errors in his game. He did what had to be done quietly and that matters. Der Bomber: Michael OliseWhile Sané is a strong contender for Der Bomber, it was Michael Olise who made the most impact in the attack. Sane’s electrifying goal may have been the ignition, but Olise looked the most lethal and sharp. His goal at the 40th minute was reminiscent of the classical Arjen Robben left footed shot and a nice callback to good old days. The assist he provided to Dier’s goal via corner was fantastic as well. He continued to make several promising strides towards a goal but his indecisiveness left a lot to be desired.Meister of the Match: Konrad LaimerNo, I am not saying this just to pick up controversy. If I wanted controversy, I’d put Thomas Müller’s name on here. Konrad Laimer may not have had the shiniest performance. He may not have bagged an assist or a goal. But who was out there making recovery runs? Laimer. Who ensured the ball was progressed into attack as often as possible? Laimer. Who had no trouble fighting for the ball back from the opposition? Laimer. Who acted the fastest during counters? You get it.What goes without saying is that the Austrian does the job he was never even meant to do. Playing at right-back and playing this well is something very few do and of course, Laimer being the versatile Swiss Austrian knife he is, has done a phenomenal job all season.Honorable Mention: Thomas MüllerNo day goes when I do not think about Thomas Müller. Congratulations on making your 500th appearance, Thomas! He came onto the pitch and we scored our 3rd goal almost in seconds. Just sayin’.

FC Internazionale Milano v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Quarter Final Second Leg Photo by Alessandro Sabattini/Getty Images Warning: lots of numbers ahead! Bayern Munich faces FC Mainz at home on Matchday 31, and this game is special as it is Thomas Müller’s penultimate home game with the Bavarians. What makes it even special is the fact that with this game, Müller will make his 500th Bundesliga appearance with Bayern, becoming the 13th player to do so in the league. 500 is a massive number and surprisingly, he is only the fourth player to do it with one single club. The ones before him are Charly Köbel with 602 appearances with Eintracht Frankfurt, Manfred Kaltz with 581 appearances with Hamburg SV and Ata Lameck with 518 appearances with VfL Bochum. The former two are also the players with the highest number of appearances overall. As far as Bayern players are concerned, goalkeeping legend Oliver Kahn with 557 appearances has played with Karlsruher SC and Bayern. Following him is Manuel Neuer, 521 appearances till date with Schalke 04 and Bayern together.Right before Müller, at the 12th position is Stefan Reuter with 502 appearances in his career with FC Nürnberg, Bayern and Borussia Dortmund. Whew, that’s a lot of numbers. In the scenario that Müller plays every single matchday after this, he will conclude his Bayern career with 503 appearances.

FC Internazionale Milano v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Quarter Final Second Leg Photo by Kevin Voigt/Getty Images One step closer! The winner of the coveted Meisterschale could be decided as early as today. All Bayern Munich needs to do is to beat Mainz and hope that Bayer Leverkusen doesn’t win against Augsburg. If the Rekordmeister wins and Die Werkself draws, that puts them at 75 and 65 points respectively. With three games remaining and a maximum of nine points from those three games, the 10-point gap between the two teams is enough to give Bayern the Bundesliga. In that dream scenario, the Bavarians can theoretically lose their last three games (knocks on wood) and Leverkusen wins their last three games and Bayern would still win the league by one point (75 to 74). In other words, it is imperative that the team gets three points. Nothing less.Bayern is top of the league with 72 points (22-6-2) while Mainz is sixth with 47 points (16-8-9). On the other hand, Leverkusen is in second place with 64 points (18-10-2) while Augsburg is 10th place with 43 points (11-10-9). 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by M. Donato/FC Bayern via Getty Images The Englishman is jonesing for a title... Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane could be nearing a point where he might get King Kong off his shoulders and win his first trophy. “That would be great. Maybe it would stop some people from talking about the fact I haven’t won a title yet,” Kane told Absolut Fußball’s Adrian Kühnel (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) with a laugh. “If we manage to do it after all the hard work and dedication we’ve put in this season, it would be a huge celebration. Although after that, the focus will be on the next title, because in football, there’s always more. But right now, it’s all about the league title,” When asked about the team’s unceremonious exit from the Champions League, Kane was it was disappointing, but also that the team would “come back stronger next season.”“You’re always disappointed after a defeat like that. We play football to make our fans proud, but also to make ourselves proud. Even though we gave it our all, put all our energy and focus into this game, we just couldn’t make it to the final in our stadium. I know the fans will always stick with us, and we’ll try to repay them. I’m confident we’ll come back stronger in the Champions League,” said Kane. Finally, Kane was asked about the job that Vincent Kompany has done this season in Bavaria and indicated that the coach has been “good” for the team. “He’s really good for us. He’s someone who doesn’t get carried away when things are going well, and he doesn’t get discouraged when things aren’t. Looking at our performances this season, I’d say 90% of them have been very good. We control a lot of games and play with high intensity; it’s just fun,” said Kane. “I feel like we’ve built a team this season that truly knows how to execute what the coach wants. Everyone gives 110% in every training session and every game. That says a lot about the coach. We’re so close to achieving one of our goals and winning the league. But I know he’ll immediately turn his attention to the Club World Cup and try to be successful there, too.”Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga showdown with Mainz 05? FC Bayern München v Manchester United: Group A - UEFA Champions League 2023/24 Photo by Marcel Engelbrecht - firo sportphoto/Getty Images That does not sound as if things are going too bad. Though Bayern Munich wants to focus on the sporting situation at hand and turn their 8 point lead in the Bundesliga title race into winning the title as soon as possible, questions about transfers still invaded the press conference ahead of the Bavarians’ upcoming Bundesliga clash against FSV Mainz 05.Sacha Boey and Kim Min-Jae, who have been rumored to be candidates for sale in the summer, were two of the transfer topics brought up. Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, addressed Boey and rumors of a return to former club Galatasaray: “There’s been no call from Turkey. We’ll discuss in calm what happens in the summer,” Eberl said, via @iMiaSanMia.Next, Eberl was asked about Kim and his general transfer plans for Bayern: “Our job is to play the next games in a way that means we can celebrate a title. Then we’ll sit down with everyone and focus on squad planning. We’ve got a very good squad. We’ll adapt the squad in some areas in the summer, but we’ll do that at the given time. Player sales are part of it. We’ll discuss everything after the end of the season.”However, some transfer discussions are still being held. Leroy Sané and Dayot Upamecano, whose contracts at Bayern end in 2025 and 2026 respectively, have held contract talks with the Bavarians in recent times and it certainly sounds as those talks are progressing: “We’ll announce things when we’ve got something to announce,” Eberl said, via @iMiaSanMia. “I don’t think it’s a matter of days, but we’re striving for things both on and off the pitch. When it’s done, we’ll announce it.”

1. FC Heidenheim 1846 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Marcel Engelbrecht - firo sportphoto/Getty Images Bayern Munich hosts Mainz 05...are you ready? Bayern has nine untouchables (Sport Bild via @iMiaSanMia)According to a report from Sport Bild journalists Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl, Bayern Munich only has nine players that the club considers “untouchable”...NINE! Check out the list: Only 9 players in the squad are untouchable this summer • Manuel Neuer • Jonas Urbig • Josip Stanišić • Alphonso Davies • Aleksandar Pavlović • Joshua Kimmich • Jamal Musiala • Michael Olise • Harry Kane Dayot Upamecano would’ve also been one of the untouchable players, but the contract talks are currently stalling due to the high demands and the player’s wish to include a release clause. Bayern want to find a solution but are unwilling to overpay. Following the recent renewals (Davies, Musiala, Kimmich), the accusation was that there was no limit - both in wages and signing fees. Upamecano and his management should not exaggerate their demands if a solution were to be found The names are not altogether shocking, but it shows how quickly things can change in Bavaria. All that said, it is not a bad nine to start with, eh?Interest in Huijsen continues to spike (ESPN)It is not just Bayern Munich who is gawking at Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen. The defender is going to be one of the most popular targets on the transfer market this summer: Four major Premier League clubs all hold “genuine interest” in AFC Bournemouth centre-back Dean Huijsen, according to BBC Sport. Huijsen has enjoyed a breakout season, becoming a key player for Andoni Iraola’s side and making his first senior appearances for Spain’s national team. That has led to Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle United all exploring deals to sign him this summer. The BBC report adds that there is a £50 million release clause in the 20-year-old’s contract. However, Real Madrid are also interested in Huijsen, who would prefer a move to the Bernabéu over another club in the Premier League.Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show Season 4, Episode 40 (Bavarian Football Works)It has been a wild week for Bayern Munich as the club prepares to try and capture the Meisterschale. Let’s dive into what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show: Bayern Munich’s backline is on shaky ground at the moment — Dayot Upamecano’s contract talks have stalled, Kim Min-jae is on the hot seat, and rumors are indicating that the club could make a splurge play for Dean Huijsen. Gunners, LFC getting into the mix for Wirtz (CaughtOffside via 90Min.com)We have already heard that Arsenal FC wants to push itself into the running for Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz, but Liverpool FC wants a piece of that action as well: Arsenal and Liverpool plan to compete with Man City, Bayern and Real Madrid for the signature of Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz. Don’t expect Bayern Munich board member for sport to join Angela Martin’s party planning committee any time soon. When asked about any potential preparation to celebrate, Eberl brushed his role in those potential festivities aside. “Bayern could be champions for the 34th time; me for the first time. I think things are being prepared in the background. But that’s not on our minds,” Eberl said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). When asked about Thomas Müller closing in on playing his 500th Bundesliga game for Bayern Munich vs. his own total (one), Eberl had a laugh. “You can’t compare,” Eberl chuckled. “His numbers are impressive. You can see his success but also his incredible number of games, goals and honours. You can’t talk highly enough about it. It’s a unique career. My Wikipedia page fits on one screen. With Thomas you need to scroll 35 times.”Finally, Eberl was asked about young players like Lennart Karl potentially breaking through with the first team. “We’ve got good young players at the campus. We’ve said we want to focus on that. Lennart is an exciting player with a lot of talent. He’ll probably also be with us for the Club World Cup. We’ve got a lot of focus on the boys. 1. FC Heidenheim - Bayern Munich Photo by Tom Weller/picture alliance via Getty Images He says it is extremely important for the team and the fans that the title be brought back to Munich. As the season comes to a close and the likelihood of winning the league increases, every player in Bayern Munich has started to take every minute of every game seriously. The league has often been referred to as the bread and butter of Bayern. Therefore the Bavarians missing the title by 18 points last year and coming third after Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart is often regarded a massive black mark in the history of the club. Josip Stanišić has been a phenomenal player at right-back and has earned himself a starting position in the team. Discussing the significance of winning the Bundesliga, he stated that it is extremely important for the team and the fans that the title be brought back to Munich.“We’ve been working towards that all season. It’s, as the saying goes, the most honest title because you have to earn it over 34 matchdays,” he further explained to FCBayern.com (as transcribed by @iMiaSanMia)He brought up the game against Heidenheim as an example. “You could see on Saturday that we absolutely wanted to win the game and dominate from the start — we simply wanted to show a reaction,” Stanišić declared.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga showdown with Mainz 05? FC Bayern München v 1. FSV Mainz 05 - Bundesliga Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images What a milestone...and what a way to go out! Bayern Munich is about to lose one of its all-time legends, but Thomas Müller isn’t done yet. The German great hit his 500th appearance for Bayern today in what was his penultimate game at the Allianz Arena. In a post-game interview (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), coach Vincent Kompany had a few words to say about it, in light of Müller leaving at the end of the season. “Every game of the 500 has its own story. Thomas always played at the highest level with a top mentality. He gave this club a lot. He’s a good example for young players. We have a tough away game in Leipzig next week. Thomas will hopefully have many moments to celebrate. But now we want to take the three points against Leipzig” (via @iMiaSanMia).These were nice words from the Belgian coach, but too generic for most fans liking. Kompany is obviously much more focused on Bayern’s final push for the Bundesliga title, a win that is almost guaranteed for the club at this point. While they fight for Harry Kane’s first ever team trophy, Thomas Müller will have to wait for a proper goodbye.

FC Augsburg v Eintracht Frankfurt - Bundesliga Photo by Marcel Engelbrecht - firo sportphoto/Getty Images We’ve shaken on it Bayern Munich can win the Bundesliga as early as the Mainz game if Bayer Leverkusen does not win against Augsburg. This will surely serve as motivation for Vincent Kompany’s men. For Augsburg coach Jess Thorup’s troops? Not so much.“That’s not a motivation for me (helping Bayern reclaim the league title)”, Thorup said flatly (as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia). “I only care about getting points for FC Augsburg. I don’t care about anything else. But if Bayern send us beer after the game, we’ll take it”.The Bavarians will be eager to do their job this weekend and get all three points from Mainz. The prospect of winning the Bundesliga this year (April 26) coming earlier than securing qualification to the Champions League last season (April 27, 2024) sure is interesting. If it means snatching the Meisterchale back, then it will all be worth it. Chuck did say at the end of his podcasts to have a beer on him, so maybe Thorup might consider it.

VfL Bochum 1848 v VfB Stuttgart - Bundesliga Photo by Rene Nijhuis/MB Media/Getty Images Alexander Nübel has done a nice job for VfB Stuttgart this season. Bayern Munich loanee Alexander Nübel is sully focused on his season with VfB Stuttgart, but he would be lying if he said he did not glance over to see what is going on with the goalkeeper situation at his parent club.Youngster Jonas Urbig has been really good in filling in for Manuel Neuer and Nübel has taken note of that. “Jonas has played very well under pressure so far. It’s only natural that he’ll get more games next season if Manu gives up some games. I’m relaxed and very happy here. I feel very comfortable. That’s what matters at the moment,” Nübel told ZDF (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I’ve had many great games with VfB Stuttgart and I’m now looking forward to the rest of the season and the big [Pokal] final. I’m very relaxed.”Nübel is getting to a point in his career where he either has to become Neuer’s successor or move on to pave his own way. The goalkeeper has had a solid campaign with VfB Stuttgart, but maybe not enough to convince Bayern Munich that is the right goalkeeper to take over when Neuer retires.Surely, that perception can change, but it will take some work to leap over the work that Urbig has done. FBL-GER-BUNDESLIGA-BAYERN MUNICH Photo by CHRISTOF STACHE/AFP via Getty Images Mind you, as of now both title wins are far from confirmed. Last season, Bayern Munich’s women’s team had to carry the burden of winning a title for Bavaria, finishing top of the Frauen Bundesliga while the men went trophyless. This season, it looks as if both team will win a title. At the time of writing, Bayern are 8 points clear in in the women’s Bundesliga with 3 games to go, while Bayern are 8 points clear in the men’s Bundesliga with 4 games to go. Both teams seem nailed on to win the title, while the women could even win the double by winning the DFB Pokal against Werder Bremen. This leads board member for sport, Max Eberl, to entertain the idea of both teams celebrating their potential titles together : “One of the first things I did when I arrived was a reception for the women’s team with [Bavarian Minister-President] Markus Söder. He said it’d be nice if we could celebrate both teams together,” Eberl said in the press conference ahead of the men’s clash against FSV Mainz, via @iMiaSanMia, though he stressed that no title has been confirmed yet. “Our women can win the title at the weekend and also have the chance of winning the domestic double. If we’ve both got something to celebrate, then it’d be great.”It really would be great to see both the women and men of Bayern celebrating their titles.

FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by F. Noever/FC Bayern via Getty Images “You take the good, you take the bad...” Bayern Munich has no luck with injuries does it?The Bavarians saw another player felled, as Bild and Tz’s Philipp Kessler (via @iMiaSanMia) reported that Bayern Munich multi-purpose man Raphaël Guerreiro is out for two week with a muscular injury: Raphaël Guerreiro will be sidelined for around two weeks with muscular problems. There’s talk that he sustained a muscle strain.Guerreiro likely would have played some role against Mainz 05 Saturday, but now Vincent Kompany will have to do some lineup shuffling. Neuer back in trainingAfter a long bout with a calf injury — and a setback built in as well — Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer is back on the training pitch (via FCBayern.com): Manuel Neuer returned to training with the squad on Friday as he completed drills with his fellow goalkeepers once again. The 39-year-old captain had suffered a strain in his right calf in Bayern’s Champions League game against Bayer Leverkusen in early March. Due to a reaction in the muscles during his recovery, Neuer had to sit out again but has now taken his next step towards a comeback by returning to team training. What does that mean for his status against Mainz 05? That is hard to say. Jonas Urbig battled a cold this week, but it still could be a little soon for Neuer to return. In fact, Tz (via @iMiaSanMia) would back up that line of thinking by reporting that Urbig will start against Mainz 05: Jonas Urbig will continue in goal tomorrow as the club does not want to take any risks with Manuel Neuer. The captain is likely to return against RB Leipzig next week.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga showdown with Mainz 05? 1899 Hoffenheim - FSV Mainz 05 Photo by Uwe Anspach/picture alliance via Getty Images Mainz 05 is focused on beating Bayern Munich... Way back on December 14th, 2024, Mainz 05 shook up the Bundesliga a bit by taking down Bayern Munich 2-1 in a match where Bayern Munich just simply was not that good. That victory has given Mainz 05’s players a reason to believe that they can do it again — and keep their own Champions League hopes for next season alive. “We saw in the first half of the season that we can beat them. But we have to have a perfect day for that,” said Mainz 05 attacking midfielder Paul Nebel told Sport Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). Given how banged up Bayern Munich is, it would not be wholly shocking for Mainz 05 to give the Bavarians a test. However, Bayern Munich has rallied around its situation and played well (for the most part) of late. Can the Bavarians get a little revenge? VfB Stuttgart v SV Werder Bremen - Bundesliga Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images/DeFodi via Getty Images Wasn’t he supposed to be the next Neuer? Alexander Nübel was signed by Bayern Munich in 2020 to provide backup to Manuel Neuer. Hopes were high, for Nübel too was from Schalke and even wore the captain armband in his last season. However, what followed was barely any playtime. Nübel found himself sidelined by an in-form Neuer and as a result, was loaned out to Ligue 1 side Monaco in 2022. Upon completion of that loan he was then sent to VfB Stuttgart. In the middle of his time at Stuttgart, Bayern gave him a contract that runs through 2029 as well, indicating that he would inevitably act as their Manuel Neuer replacement. Of course, the signing of Jonas Urbig and his dependability have now changed the equation. This has implications. As reported by @iMiaSanMia, despite having a clause until April 30 to cut Nübel’s loan short, the club will not make use of it. This means that the goalkeeper will almost certainly stay in Stuttgart next season. Stuttgart will continue to cover around a third of his annual pay of around €12 million. Additionally, it was reported that Bayer Leverkusen are closely monitoring Nübel, but have not made an indication that they will make a serious move for him.
