هویتِ ایرانی و مُعضلِ بازگشت به خویش
بدون تردید جامعه ایران امروز دچار بحران هویت است، و این بحران در اَشکال گوناگونی خود را ظاهر میکند: بی هویتی جوانان، ناهنجاریهای جنسی، سونامی جراحی پلاستیک و زیبایی، رواجِ فزاینده سنتهای غیرِ بُومی همچون هالُوین و روزِ وَلِنتاین… هرچند جمهوری اسلامی در تشدید این بحران نقش مهمی داشته، اما آنرا کلید نزد. نطفه این بحران در آشنایی تدریجیِ جامعه ایران با تمدنِ مدرنِ غرب، بسته شد؛ هنگامی که فرهیختگان و رجال سیاسی ایران دریافتند که شکافی عظیم بین جامعه سنتی ایران و تمدنِ نوین غربی وجود دارد. برخی معتقد بودند که این شکاف را باید با یک “جهش” پُر کرد: “اخذ تمدن” یا غربگرایی. ورودِ عناصری از مدرنیته غربی به جامعه ایرانی در عصرِ پهلوی، رفته رفته گفتمانِ بَدیلی را در بین روشنفکران ایرانی با مَشربهای عقیدتیِ مختلف، شکل داد: بازگشت به خویش. هرچند جمهوری اسلامی از بدو تاسیس با روشنفکری و روشنفکران مخالف بود، اما از گفتمانِ “بازگشت به خویش” به سود خود، استفاده کرد. در این سخنرانی، به طرح تاریخچه بحران هویت در ایران معاصر میپردازیم.

The Perils of False Self
Throughout the ages, spiritual traditions have maintained that “ego” is a major obstacle to soul development and God realization. But, there is much more to “ego” than what we typically understand as “selfishness”. At its core, “ego” is an “idea” (mental image) formed around the fundamental question: “who am I?”. The ego-idea involves how the individual defines herself and what she identifies with. In turn, the ego-idea will heavily influence her feelings, thoughts, choices and actions. In this presentation, we will examine “ego” as false perception of “self” by drawing upon Rumi’s transformative encounter with his mentor, Shams.

Rebirth and Renewal
According to Islam’s oral tradition, the Prophet Mohammad said: die before you die. As Rumi puts it, this is not a death that takes you to a grave, but a death that transforms you and leads you to “light”. In modern language, this is the death of “ego”, which would create a new person in the process. In this presentation, we will discuss personal transformation and some concrete forms it may take.

تمنای مرگ
در جامعهٔ ما نامِ امام حسین یادآورِ فضیلتهایی همچون “عزّت” و “آزادگی” است؛ در عین حال عاشورای او حکایت از “تمنای مرگ” هم میکند. “تمنای مرگ” یک تعبیر قرآنی، و یکی از شاخصههای عرفانِ شمس تبریزی و عرفانِ مولانا است. در بادیِ اَمر شاید عجیب بنظر برسد که مولانایی که بغایت طربناک و عاشقِ زندگی بود، مشتاقِ مرگ هم بوده باشد. اشتیاق به مرگ یکی از ویژهگیهای اولیا الهی است، چون آنها مرگ را زیبا و مقدمه “وصال” می دانند. البته تمنای مرگ به معنای بی ارزش دیدنِ جان و زندگی، عمل انتحاری (مثل داعش) و یا روی مین رفتن نیست. تمنای مرگ برآمده از تأملاتِ عقلانی و شهودِ باطنی است. در این سخنرانی به بررسی “تمنای مرگ” در پرتو آیات قرآن کریم و آموزههای شمس و مولانا میپردازیم، تا عظمتِ کارِ کارستانی که امام حسین در کربلا کرد را بهتر دریابیم.

What Does the Quran Teach About Religious Diversity?
Quran study, session 32. There are many people whom have a dim view of religious diversity. They tend to view diversity as the devil’s work. Frank Peretti is a best-selling Christian fiction writer. There is a common thread in his novels: everybody who is not a follower of Jesus Christ has a demon attached to their soul. That demon feeds them thoughts, and then those thoughts guide their behavior. This sort of exclusivist sentiment is quite prevalent in religious communities around the world. Does the Quran support the view? Does it say that only followers of the Prophet Mohammad are rightly guided and saved by God? In this presentation, we will examine this question with the aid of Rumi’s insights.

Is There Only One True Religion?
Quran study, session 31. Religious diversity is a fact of history. Religions are quite different in their belief systems and ritual practices, which makes it hard to imagine that they are all equally “true” / “valid”. Philosophers of religion tell us that there are three distinct views on “truth” of religion: exclusivism, inclusivism and pluralism. For whatever reason, exclusivism has always been the dominant position among religious people around the world. Each religious community believes that it has a monopoly over truth / faith / salvation: only my religion is true, only my religion offers a true path to God, only my religion is blessed by God, people who follow other religions are misguided! This sense of religious superiority creates a fertile ground for hatred and bigotry; it can easily be exploited to shed blood in the name of God and His “true” religion. In this presentation, we will discuss what exclusivism, inclusivism and pluralism mean.

شعبههای خودخواهی
پرتو نور برنامه شماره ۱۹۶۱. “اصلاح نفس” یکی از مُقوّماتِ سلوک معنوی و عرفانی است، و مهمترین رُکن آن، درمانِ خودخواهی (خودبینی) است. خودبینی در اصل یک تصورِ خاص از موقعیت و وضعیتِ “خویشتن” است که وفقِ آن، فرد خود را مرکزِ ثقلِ عالَم میپندارد؛ خود را به سانِ “خط کش” میبیند، به ترتیبی که همه کس و همه چیز باید با او متر شود. شوربختانه خودبینی غالباً “پوشیده” است و به چشمِ فرد نمیآید، و او از خودپرستیِ خویشتن بی خبر است. خودپرستیِ او در پَسِ پردههای زیادی پنهان است. در این برنامه به تشریحِ مُعضلِ خودبینی میپردازیم، و ۵ نمونه که شعبههای خودخواهی اند را توضیح میدهیم، اموری که نسبتِ آنها با خودخواهی چندان روشن نیست.

Cultivating a Forgiving Heart and Mind
Quran study, session 30. Forgiveness is a highly celebrated virtue in all communities. Yet, it is no easy feat for the average person to forgive, because of a lack of a forgiving mind. There are many misconceptions about the nature and the primary beneficiary of forgiveness. We often think of forgiveness as a gift that we give to a wrongdoer- someone whom has wronged / hurt us. But, the primary beneficiary of forgiveness is actually the person who forgives! Forgiveness paves the way for healing, and lessens the grip of the wrongdoer’s act on the victim’s mind and feelings. In this presentation, we will explore the deeper meaning and messages of forgiveness.

Forgiveness
Quran study, session 29. Forgiveness is an important virtue in all spiritual traditions: it is considered an expression of love, and a yardstick for closeness to God. Psychologists also find forgiveness a valuable tool for mental health and psychological wellness. While forgiveness is not generally easy to practice (particularly in traumatic situations), some people tend to have an easier time with it than others. Mindset plays a big part in a person’s ability to forgive. In this presentation, we will explore what the Quran and the renowned Iranian poet Hafez (حافظ) teach about forgiveness. These teachings aim to foster a forgiving mind, which in turn empowers the person to forgive.

اخلاق و عرفان (۶) فضیلت قناعت
پرتو نور برنامه شماره ۱۸۶۴. قناعت در نزدِ پیشینیانِ ما فضیلتِ مهمی تلقی میشد. حکیمِ فرزانه ما سعدی بابِ سومِ گُلستان را به فضیلتِ قناعت اختصاص داد. همه مکاتب دینی و عرفانی نیز قناعت را یکی از لوازمِ پیشرفتِ معنوی معرفی میکنند. البته جهان مدرن با قناعت بر سرِ مهر نیست و آنرا بر نمیتابد. در این برنامه با استفاده از آموزههای پیشوایان دین و عارفان به بررسی این فضیلت میپردازیم: قناعت یعنی چه؟ چرا قناعت در جهان مدرن فراموش شده است؟ میوههای مطلوب و ثمراتِ قناعت چیست؟ آیا قناعت با همت و تلاش برای پیشرفت در زندگی منافات دارد؟

Why Do Muslims Fast in Ramadan?
Practicing Muslims fast for 30 days in the holy month of Ramadan. Yet, their motivations and expectations vary. Ordinary Muslims fast primarily to discharge a religious obligation; the more spiritually-minded Muslims fast in hopes of spiritual transformation / rejuvenation. Imam Muhammad Ghazali, the preeminent Islamic scholar, identifies three categories / degrees of fast: ordinary, extra-ordinary and perfect fast. Ordinary fast involves curbing the appetite of the stomach and the appetite of sex. Extra-ordinary fast involves the tongue, eyes, ears, hands and feet. The perfect fast involves the heart. In this presentation, we will explore the spiritual dimension of the Ramadan fast using Ghazali’s classifications.

روزه عوام و روزه خواص
پرتو نور برنامه شماره ۱۸۶۲. روزه رمضان یکی از فرائض شرعی در اسلام است. روزه (صوم / صیام) در اصل یعنی امساک کردن و خودداری کردن از عمل. اما متعلَقِ امساک میتواند امور گوناگونی باشد. از همین رو بسته به اینکه فردِ روزهدار از چه چیزی امساک میکند، روزه او محتوای ویژهای پیدا میکند. لذا همگان حَظِّ واحد و نصیبِ یکسانی از روزهداری نمیبرند. ابوحامد محمد غزالی ۳ نوع / درجه برای روزه معرفی کرده است: روزه عوام، روزه خواص، روزه خاص الخاص. در روزه عوام، از خوردن و اشامیدن و تَمتُعِ جنسی پرهیز میشود. در روزه خواص، زبان و چشم و گوش و دست و پا نیز روزه میگیرند. و در روزه خاص الخاص، دل نیز به این مجموعه اضافه میشود و روزه میگیرد. در این برنامه به تشریح اَصناف و درجاتِ روزه میپردازیم.

The Many Faces of Selfishness
In the Islamic tradition, selfishness (or egoism) is considered the “mother of all vices”. Vices such as greed, envy and arrogance are essentially different faces of selfishness. This means that one does not have to treat his many vices individually; if he treats his selfishness, all his moral imperfections will fade away! In this presentation, we will draw upon Rumi’s wisdom to learn about selfishness and its various forms / faces.
