The only legitimate argument against the policy is that it doesn’t go far enough and requires industry-specific duties and quotas or additional measures like subsidies and tax credits.
But this crap from Thomas Sowell and Milton Friedman has been disproven already by the experience from COVID and the Ukraine War.
Tariffs are not a tax on consumers. When Trump implemented tariffs in his first term, prices did not go up because exporters absorbed the cost of the tariff. Businesses don’t want to and in many cases can’t pass on the cost to consumers because of competition and because Americans hate price increases.
Exporters may pass on *some* of the cost to consumers in the short term, but not in full. And over the long term, as production moves back to America and economies of scale are created, then domestic manufacturers won’t have to pay the tariff.
Regardless, it is an existential necessity for America to become productive again. The question is “how” and not “if” America should use industrial policy to rebuild its productive economy.

The Trump tariffs are awesome, best thing he has done to date in my opinion.
As negative as I am about Trump, his moves to scale down the bureaucracy, shrink the deficit, and impose tariffs have all been excellent. Border crossings are at zero.
With that being said, Trump supporters are almost never forthcoming about the significant tradeoffs for all of this. We are almost certainly getting a war with Iran, there will be an increase in legal immigration down the pike, and we are getting the Paypal mafia to wield an AI surveillance state which hates antisemitism.
At the same time, Russia normalization will remain elusive, deportations will not be substantial, and although the border is closed now, that can always change in the next administration.
When you look at the ledger, the upside like the border and DOGE activities come with significant caveats, the downsides are considerable, and much of what was promised will simply never be delivered.

It’s obvious that Israel’s goal in creating new corridors inside Gaza, seizing control of the Philadelphi crossing, and establishing “buffer zones” along the entire border is to ultimately take control of the strip.
I don’t see any scenario where Palestinians remain in Gaza. Under Trump they will be removed to Somalia, Sudan, Morocco, or some other third country.
And then they will never be allowed to return.

Interesting new developments with Iran.
Notably, Israel was not excluded from the Liberation Day tariffs on April 2. On week later, Netanyahu was the first world leader to meet with Trump since the tariffs were implemented, seeking relief from tariffs and also to discuss developments with Iran.
As discussed previously, this is happening amidst an unprecedented buildup of force at Diego Garcia which includes stealth bombers, refueling aircraft, carrier strike groups, as well as the hardening of potential targets in Israel including the deployment of a second THAAD system.
By all appearances, the United States is preparing for war with Iran by making offensive as well as defensive preparations.
Despite Netanyahu's concession to remove all trade barriers with the United States, Trump did not yield and the tariffs remain in place. During their joint press conference, Netanyahu appeared visibly uncomfortable when Trump said "we already give Israel billions of dollars per year."
Trump announced that the US would engage Iran in direct, high level negotiations on Saturday in Oman, apparently to the surprise of Netanyahu, who was not previously notified. This also contradicts Tehran's stated position that they will negotiate with the US only "indirectly" until certain conditions are met.
Axios reported today that Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff will meet with the Iranian foreign minister on Saturday. Before departing Washington today, Netanyahu released a statement saying that there can only be an Iran deal if Iran's nuclear facilities are "physically blown up."
Witkoff, Vance, and Trump seem to favor a deal. Rubio, Waltz and Netanyahu favor military intervention. Israel is attempting to sabotage diplomacy to clear the way for a strike, Trump is trying to make a deal. Seems this will come to a head in April or May.
