The BRICS bloc has announced a new payment system for cross-currency exchanges, part of its long-term plan to move away from the dollar.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that the nine-member group is working toward the creation of the new payment system without the integration of the U.S. dollar called BRICS Pay. He added that the new payment system will not only be used to settle cross-border transactions, but also act as a complete financial set-up.

"Many are attracted by the fact that payment systems are being developed within BRICS [that] allows trading investing, carrying out other economic operations without being dependent on those that decided to weaponize the dollar and the euro," said Lavrov.

Western officials believe they have obtained evidence of secret arms supplies from China to Russia, which could signify a major escalation in Beijing's involvement in the war in Ukraine.

If it were in Ukraine's shoes, Budapest wouldn't have fought the Russians, said Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's top aide.

Balázs Orbán, the political director of his namesake (but no relation to him), was a guest on a podcast on Wednesday where he talked about Ukraine's self-defense against Russian aggression.

“Every country has the right to decide its own destiny, and leaders take responsibility,” Orbán said. However, he went on to add that if the same situation had happened to Hungary, they wouldn't have taken up the fight against the aggressors — a lesson learned in Hungary's own unsuccessful pushback against the Russians in 1956.

“We probably wouldn't have done what President Zelenskyy did two and a half years ago, because it's irresponsible,” the political director said. “Because obviously he put his country into a war defense, all these people died, all this territory was lost — again, it's their right, it's their sovereign decision, they had the right to do it. But if we had been asked, we would not have advised it.”

Opposition politicians have already called on the political director to resign, including the leader of the center-right Tisza Party, MEP Péter Magyar: “With these words Balázs Orbán has humiliated the memory of thousands of Hungarian freedom fighters, hundreds of whom — unlike Balázs Orbán — were ready to sacrifice their lives for the freedom and independence of their country.”

According to the Daily Wire, West Sacramento, California-based The Better Meat Company (TBMC) was awarded almost $1.5 million to establish a facility to make its products. The $1.48 million grant will ostensibly be used to set up "a bioproduction facility for mycoprotein ingredients that are shelf-stable, have high protein and fiber contents, and can be dehydrated." An Aug. 20 DoD press release noted that TBMC is but one of seven companies bankrolled by the department for its Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing Program (DBIMP).

The news site explained that TBMC makes its lab-grown meat "by feeding water and nutrients to fungal roots stored in a bioreactor." The process turns "the material into a semi-solid gray liquid that is strained to finally become the end product."

A Defense Department spokesman told the Wire that the DBIMP grant "is in support of a bioproduction facility for types of protein that are shelf-stable, have high protein and fiber content and can rapidly support the sustainment requirements of our globally deployed forces."

He continued: "We are investing in sources of protein such as chickpeas and tofu. The [DoD] is not funding research into 'lab-grown' or 'fake meat' – nor does it have plans to include such protein substitutes in service members' MREs."

Finland will place a key Nato base less than 200 kilometres from its border with Russia, “sending a message” to its eastern neighbour, the defence ministry said on Sept 27.

Finland became a Nato member in 2023, dropping decades of military non-alignment after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Defence Minister Antti Hakkanen said Nato’s new headquarters for the Northern European land command unit will be in Mikkeli, one of the closest cities to Finland’s 1,340km border with Russia.

“Finland is sending a message to Russia that we are a full member of Nato and that Nato has a very strong role also in Finland’s defence,” Mr Hakkanen told a press conference.

The Finnish defence forces’ army command is already located at the site of the future base.

The military alliance’s Multi Corps Land Component Command will operate under Nato’s Norfolk command in the United States, which oversees the Atlantic and Arctic regions.
