Budapest will soon be deprived of a share of its EU funds for refusing to pay the fine imposed by the European Court of Justice.

The European Commission has triggered a special procedure to deduct the €200 million fine that the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has imposed on Hungary over the country's long-standing restrictions on the right to asylum.

The fine has to be paid as a lump sum to the European Commission.

Budapest missed the first deadline in late August, prompting the executive to send a second payment request with a deadline of 17 September.

Since this second request was also ignored, the Commission said on Wednesday it would activate the so-called "offsetting procedure" to subtract the €200 million fine from Hungary's allocated share of the EU budget.

President of Finland Alexander Stubb has decided to provide additional defensive equipment to Ukraine upon the government's proposal. This marks the 25th shipment of military equipment from Helsinki.

An ally of the United States and staunch supporter of Ukraine is using frozen Russian assets to finance Kyiv's domestic weapons production.

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen has said that his country's investments in Ukraine's manufacturing industry had allowed it to triple monthly production of the 2S22 Bohdana howitzer.

The Bohdana howitzer is a Ukrainian-made, self-propelled, wheeled howitzerfor long-range artillery support. It was developed by Ukraine following the 2014 Russian invasion as part of an effort to modernize its military and reduce reliance on foreign equipment.

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced that 1.3 billion Danish Krone ($194 million dollars) would be earmarked to support Ukraine's military procurement efforts, and that Denmark would manage a 394.6 million-euro E.U. fund to finance Ukraine's defense industry.

The latter, the ministry said, would be raised from "frozen Russian assets."

Sweden plans to boost payments to up to US$34,000 to immigrants who leave the nation that has been a haven for the war-weary and persecuted, the right-wing government said.

Immigrants who voluntarily return to their countries of origin from 2026 would be eligible to receive up to 350,000 Swedish kronor (US$34,000), the government, which is propped up by the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, told a press conference.

“We are in the midst of a paradigm shift in our migration policy,” Migration Minister Johan Forssell told reporters, as the government presented its latest move to crack down on migration.

Currently immigrants can receive up to 10,000 kronor per adult and 5,000 kronor per child, with a cap of 40,000 kronor per family.
