Chinese banks are shutting down transactions with Russia "en masse," with delays in payments intensifying during August, Reuters reported on Aug. 30, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The U.S. unveiled a new set of sanctions against Chinese and Russian companies over their support for Moscow's aggression last week. Despite efforts to avoid or mitigate the impact of the trade restrictions, Chinese institutions have begun scaling back their business dealings with Russia.
Specifically, a number of major Chinese banks have begun blocking transactions for electronics out of fear of secondary sanctions.
Transactions worth tens of billions of yuan are currently stuck in limbo, a source told Reuters.
It's just the latest case of mounting obstacles in Russian-Chinese economic relations amid the growing pressure of U.S. sanctions imposed over Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

A think tank has blamed "woeful budgeting" at the Home Office for repeated overspending on asylum support.
Over the last three years, the department's initial estimated budgets for asylum, border, visa and passport operations amounted to £320m.
But the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) said it had ended up spending £7.9bn over the period, £7.6bn more than forecast.
The IFS also warned the department had submitted figures it "knows to be insufficient" for this year.
The think tank said the higher spending reflected an increase in the number of people seeking asylum and the cost of housing people in accommodation like hotels.
It said there was also increased spending on special visa and resettlement schemes, most notably for Afghanistan and Ukraine.

Here’s a snippet from his interview with 60 Minutes.

“We agreed to the same rules. I don't know. It doesn't matter to me. I'd rather have it probably on, but the agreement was that it would be the same as it was last time. In that case, it was muted. I didn't like it the last time, but it worked out fine. I mean, ask Biden how it worked out. It was fine, and I think it should be the same. We agreed to the same rules, same rules, and same specifications, and I think that's probably what it should be, but they're trying to change it. The truth is they're trying to get out of it because she doesn't want to debate. She's not a good debater. She's not a smart person. She doesn't want to debate.”

While the former US president’s statements are “alarmist,” they should be taken seriously, Dmitry Peskov has said
Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region has escalated tensions “to the limit,” and former US President Donald Trump is correct to warn that the situation could spiral into “World War III,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.
In a speech at the National Guard Association’s annual conference in Detroit on Monday, Trump claimed that the US has never “been closer to World War III than we are now.”

According to Forbes, Pavel Durov is accused of physical abuse against their child. The lawsuit was filed in Geneva in March 2023 after Durov stopped paying monthly child support of 150,000 euros.
Initially, the Geneva court dismissed the lawsuit, deeming it filed too late. However, after an appeal in May 2023, the case was reopened. Bolgar accuses Durov of abusing their son, resulting in injuries.
Additionally, she was granted sole custody of the children, and this decision was upheld in February 2024. Durov did not contest the ruling.

As more and more schools across the world move towards banning addictive and disruptive smartphones in school, Hungary is joining the trend, with a nationwide ban going into effect in September.
Hungary is following in the footsteps of a number of countries, including England, France, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Greece, and the Netherlands, which have all introduced bans in a relatively short period of time — most in the last year.
In an interview with Hungarian newspaper Magyar Nemzet, the rector of the Nemeskürty István Faculty of Teacher Training at the National University of Public Service (NKE), Mihály Nánay, stated that the ban is extremely welcome and that schoolwork, studying, and the social atmosphere in schools will improve dramatically.

Alexander Lukashenko, the self-proclaimed president of Belarus, has said that someone was allegedly advising him to turn away from Russia and side with Ukraine in the fight against Russia.
Quote from Lukashenko at the Republican Pedagogical Council: "We are now being advised, getting [proposals] from all sides (this is all a downpour on me): ‘Back off here, liberate there’. This and more: ‘Give up on Russia, turn your back on Russia. Fight with Ukraine against Russia. Let’s bring NATO troops to the border near Smolensk [Russian town not far from the Belarusian border – ed.].’ That’s how far [this advice] goes. Today, I am receiving proposals from all sides that we cannot accept 99% of the time."
"We are living in extremely difficult times. I am not talking about the fact that we have a war in the south. I'm talking about what these madmen in the West are preparing against us. We have to keep this in mind. What we need in this situation is to turn this country, this huge machine (small Belarus – it's not so small when you have to run it), from the West to the East. We need to ensure that we are accepted in the East. Thank God, we are succeeding, but it is hard work," Lukashenko concluded.

Three Americans Face Death Penalty for Alleged Role in Congo Coup Attempt
In a shocking development, Congolese prosecutors have requested the death penalty for 50 individuals, including three Americans, accused of attempting a coup earlier this year. The three American citizens, Marcel Malanga, Tyler Thompson Jr., and Benjamin Reuben Zalman-Polun, are among the 50 defendants facing charges that carry the death penalty.
According to prosecutors, the defendants, whose trial opened in June, are accused of multiple crimes, including terrorism, murder, and criminal association. The charges stem from a botched coup attempt led by opposition figure Christian Malanga, which resulted in the deaths of six people. Malanga was fatally shot while resisting arrest and had live-streamed the attack on social media.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov’s arrest in France, along with the US administration’s encouragement of it, bear “the hallmark of dictatorship."
In an interview with Tucker Carlson on Monday (Aug. 26), Kennedy said the First Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects the right to freedom of expression from government interference, should also protect “misinformation,” as well as information that “no one wants to hear.”
Carlson replied that the administration of US President Joe Biden currently views anything that criticizes the “job that they’re doing” as misinformation.
“With that in mind, you see the Biden administration encouraging France, Macron to arrest the owner and founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, who is, as of now, in a French prison,” Carlson said, adding: “that’s the hallmark of dictatorship.”
“We’ve lost Europe,” Kennedy replied. “Europe now does not have free speech.”
He went on to draw a comparison between Durov and X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk, blasting the Democratic Party for its lack of actual democratic values.
“Elon Musk should be the hero of the Democratic Party,” Kennedy said. “He was actually the only one that would allow free speech on his platform, and he’s now become a villain because of it.”
