@PsyEngAcademy

@PsyEngAcademy

@PsyEngAcademy
Early Industrial Psychology: A very brief and highly selective history
@PsyEngAcademy

PASSAGE 5
Two early psychological journals—Wundt’s *Philosophical Studies*, 1881, and Meumann’s *Archive for the Entire Field of Psychology*, 1905—have played a seminal role in the institutionalization of modern psychology as an independent science. The *Archive* was initially conceived as a brainstorm by a group of Wundt’s senior students during the festivities associated with Wundt’s seventieth birthday on August 16, 1902, almost forty years after the publication of his first program for the new psychology. Under the leadership of Ernst Meumann (1862–1915), many of the scholars involved in these discussions seem to have believed that the new journal would become the long-expected forum for the integration of the distinctive experimental psychology of the Leipzig Institute with other experimental approaches and with the beginnings of applied psychology in education and related fields. Unfortunately, although the first issue of the new periodical was published in 1903, no reconciliation between opposing factions was to take place at that time, owing to the sharply diverging views of Wundt and Meumann concerning the nature of psychology.
In this context, it will help to remember that interest in all types of educational matters, and in particular in the application of psychological principles and procedures to educational problems, was quite prominent around the turn of the nineteenth century. Such concern was strongly reflected in the choice of articles, which the editors of the *Archive*—with the exception, of course, of Wundt himself—accepted for publication. Meumann, who was a respected authority in experimental as well as in educational psychology, quite obviously used his position as chief editor to inform his experimental colleagues of pertinent developments in educational psychology and the field of educational experimentation in the pages of the new publication. From our modern vantage point it is not difficult to see, as Engelhardt has suggested in his recent essay, how the *Archive for the Entire Field of Psychology* played a role in the institutionalization of educational psychology analogous to that of *Philosophical Studies* for general-experimental psychology.
21. Which of the following techniques is used in paragraph 2?
1) Direct quotation
2) Rhetorical question
3) Indirect quotation
4) Definition
22. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?
1) The *Archive* was initially designed as an analogue to *Philosophical Studies* for the institutionalization of general-experimental psychology.
2) Interest in the application of psychological principles to educational problems was very much conspicuous by the later years of the 19th century.
3) Wundt’s and Meumann’s convictions concerning the essential qualities of psychology can be said to have been extremely at odds with each other.
4) The *Archive* did not become a forum for the integration of the experimental psychology of the Leipzig Institute with other experimental approaches.
23. According to the passage, Meumann’s position in the Archive …
1) prevented him from pursuing research in his main areas of interest, namely, educational psychology and educational experimentation
2) made it possible for lesser-known psychologists in all areas of the discipline to publish their work in a prestigious periodical
3) enabled him to keep other experimental psychologists updated about relevant advances in educational psychology and educational experimentation
4) was the main obstacle preventing psychologists with radically new ideas such as Wundt from presenting their scholarly findings to the public
24. The passage provides sufficient information to answer which of the following questions?
1) How did Meumann become a respected authority in experimental and educational psychology?
2) Approximately, in what year was Wundt’s first program for the new psychology published?
3) Was Engelhardt among the senior students who studied under Meumann’s supervision?
4) What differentiated the experimental psychology of the Leipzig Institute from other approaches?
25. Which of the following words best describes the author’s opinion about the criteria for the selection of articles by the Archive’s editors?

@PsyEngAcademy

@PsyEngAcademy

@PsyEngAcademy

PASSAGE 4
Language is a core aspect of all areas of psychological science. [1] For instance, language is a primary means through which children form mental models of the world (developmental psychology). These mental models are revealed through verbal explanations of events (cognitive psychology) and interactions with others (social psychology). Language can reveal disordered mental models that could be targeted by treatments (clinical psychology) or communicate emotions and guide emotion regulation strategies (affective psychology), which have important implications for physical and mental well-being (health psychology). Individual differences in traits such as agreeableness, extraversion or narcissism are expressed in spoken and written communication styles (personality psychology). [2]
Technological advances in natural language processing in the past two decades have made it easier than ever for psychologists to incorporate language analysis in their work. As computational power and the availability of data have grown, language analysis has progressed from humans counting words in text, starting in the 1960s, to latent semantic analysis in the 1990s, and to automated algorithms for analysis of text on the internet in the 2010s. [3] For instance, one popular algorithm (the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count program) enables researchers to examine the frequency of occurrence of different categories of words and assess how they predict outcomes such as physical and psychological health. Another prominent example is topic modelling, which uncovers themes in documents by analyzing word co-occurrence patterns (via Latent Dirichlet allocation). The advent of LLMs, such as OpenAI’s generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) models, Google’s LaMDA and Bard AI (which can both generate and score text in human-like ways), will probably push the field in new directions. [4]
16. The underlined word “implications” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to …
1) insinuations
2) retaliations
3) amplifications
4) surrogates
17. The underlined words “the field” in paragraph 2 refer to …
1) topic modelling
2) technological advances
3) Latent Dirichlet allocation
4) language analysis
18. According to the passage, examination of the frequency of occurrence of different categories of words assists psychologists in …
1) developing the primary means through which children form mental models of the world interactions with others
2) expressing individual differences in traits such as agreeableness, extraversion or narcissism in written communication
3) evaluating the manner in which they forecast consequences such as corporeal or mental wellbeing of individuals
4) uncovering themes in documents by analyzing word co-occurrence patterns related to verbal explanations of events
19. Which of the following words best describes the author’s overall tone in the passage?
1) Humorous
2) Irritated
3) Cynical
4) Optimistic
20. In which position marked by [1], [2], [3] and [4], can the following sentence best be inserted in the passage?
Finally, research is conveyed through text in scholarly papers, which then serve as objects of study in systematic reviews (metascience).

2) [3]
3) [4]
4) [1]
PASSAGE 3
Life-span developmental psychology involves the study of constancy and change in behavior throughout the life course (ontogenesis), from conception to death. [1] The goal is to obtain knowledge about general principles of life-long development, about interindividual differences and similarities in development, as well as about the degree and conditions of individual plasticity or modifiability of development.
It is usually assumed that child development, rather than life-span development, was the subject matter of the initial scholarly pursuits into psychological ontogenesis. Several historical reviews suggest that this generalization is inaccurate. [2] The major historical precursors of scholarship on the nature of psychological development—by Tetens in 1777, Carus in 1808, Quetelet in 1835—were essentially life-span and not child-centered in approach. Despite these early origins of life-span thinking, however, life-span development has begun to be studied empirically only during the last two decades by researchers following the lead of early twentieth century psychologists such as Charlotte Bühler (1933), Erik H. Erikson (1959), G. Stanley Hall (1922), H. L. Hollingworth (1927), and Carl G. Jung (1933).
Three events seem particularly relevant to the more recent burgeoning of interest in life-span conceptions; [3] (a) population demographic changes toward a higher percentage of elderly members; (b) the concurrent emergence of gerontology as a field of specialization, with its search for the life-long precursors of aging; and (c) the “aging” of the subjects and researchers of the several classical longitudinal studies on child development begun in the 1920s and 1930s. [4]
11. Which of the following techniques is used in paragraph 1?
1) Definition
2) Quotation
3) Anecdote
4) Comparison and contrast
12. According to paragraph 2, considering the subject matter of the initial scholarly pursuits into psychological ontogenesis, …
1) life-span thinking has originated very recently; however, its development has been studied empirically since the early years of developmental psychology
2) it is supposed that it consisted of child development rather than life-span development; however, a number of historical surveys have pointed to the opposite
3) it is assumed that major contemporary pioneers of scholarship on the nature of psychological development are child-centered in approach
4) it can be claimed that scholars like Tetens, Carus, and Quetelet followed the lead of figures such as Charlotte Bühler, G. Stanley Hall, H. L. Hollingworth, and Carl G. Jung
13. According to the passage, all of the following are true EXCEPT that …
1) ontogenesis, as a field of specialization which has recently emerged, aims at searching for the life-long precursors of aging
2) life-span development examines the extent and circumstances of individual developmental pliability or alterability
3) the aging of the subjects and researchers of a number of studies on child development began in the 1st half of the 20th century
4) population demographic changes point toward a higher number of senior members in society compared to the past
14. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
1) Child Development and Its Relationship to Learning Abilities
2) Towards a Definition of Life-span Developmental Psychology
3) The Lives and Works of the Founders of Child Development Studies
4) A Historical Survey of Developmental Psychology in America
15. In which position marked by [1], [2], [3] and [4], can the following sentence best be inserted in the passage?
These events and others have pushed developmental scholarship toward recognizing the entire life span as a scientifically and socially important focus.
1) [2]
2) [3]
3) [4]
4) [1]
Passage 2
Organizational behavior (OB) is a field that takes a multidisciplinary approach to the study of organizations. The field includes both psychologists who favor individual behavior and sociologists who prefer more molar approaches. As such, OB is a field where specialists in various disciplines who are interested in organizations can find common ground and have some exposure to research and practice outside their own fields. For example, topics of primary interest to industrial psychologists but perhaps unfamiliar to sociologists, such as employee selection, training, and performance appraisal, are sometimes covered in OB texts in a chapter on human resource (HR) practices.
Those OB texts that include a brief discussion of the history of the field sometimes focus on twentieth-century developments, or at other times look to the distant past for precursors of current ideas. These OB texts generally agree on a number of landmarks: Frederick Taylor and Scientific Management; Administrative Theory and Fayol along with Weber and Bureaucracy; Human Relations approaches originating with the Hawthorne studies and continuing through the work of individuals such as Maslow, McGregor, Likert, and Argyris; and then on to modern contingency approaches. Longer histories provide more detail and nuance but essentially follow the same script.
6. The underlined word “appraisal” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to …
1) instillation
2) effacement
3) obstruction
4) assessment
7. According to paragraph 1, regarding OB, the main difference between psychologists and sociologists is that …
1) the former are exposed to research, while the latter prefer to practice in their own field
2) psychologists focus on single persons, whereas sociologists are concerned with masses
3) topics of primary interest to psychologists are almost always unfamiliar to sociologists
4) the former practice in their own field, while the latter are usually exposed to research
8. According to paragraph 2, the common denominator in all varieties of works on the history of OB is that …
1) all of them include a brief discussion of the history of the field, with a focus on twentieth-century developments
2) the majority of them often focus on the distant past in order to introduce the precursors of present-day ideas
3) there is a consensus among them regarding several authoritative texts written on their subjects of interest
4) they all agree that long histories must provide more detail and nuance but essentially follow the same script
9. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
1) Human Relations approaches emerged in Hawthorne’s studies following the work of scholars like Maslow and Argyris.
2) In OB texts, employee selection and training are very rarely covered in a chapter on human resource (HR) practices.
3) As an independent field, organizational behavior (OB) always involves the simultaneous study of multiple organizations.
4) Weber and Frederick Taylor can respectively be regarded as early authorities on Bureaucracy and Scientific Management.
10. The passage provides sufficient information to answer which of the following questions?
I. In what year was organizational behavior established as a multidisciplinary field?
II. Who wrote the first landmark work on the history of organizational behavior?
III. What is the name of a more contemporary area of study in organizational behavior?
1) Only II
2) Only III
3) II and III
4) Only I
Passage 1
The science of psychology generates knowledge about the nature and development of human thoughts, emotions, and behaviors at both individual and societal levels. It is an autonomous scientific discipline that applies to nearly every aspect of our boundless experience. Psychologists work in a broad range of settings—effectively any place where human functioning is relevant. Psychological science deepens our understanding of human behavior within social, cultural and linguistic contexts. Psychologists have a role in supporting health and well-being globally within a human rights framework with the goal of improving lives.
It is humanly and financially beneficial for governments to recognize that psychologists make critical independent contributions to the alleviation of suffering and the enhancement of lives. Social determinants of health, such as education, adequate food and nutrition, a reasonable standard of living, work opportunities and equitable treatment are recognized as fundamental human rights. Failure to address mental health challenges, such as depression and anxiety, that are often a consequence of lack of attention to social determinants of health costs the global economy $1 trillion annually in lost productivity.
1. The underlined word “generates” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to …
1) defends
2) produces
3) practices
4) delays
2. The underlined word “It” in paragraph 1 refers to …
1) the science of psychology
2) knowledge
3) nature
4) development of human thoughts
3. All of the following words are mentioned in the passage EXCEPT …
1) treatment
2) depression
3) psychiatrists
4) relevant
4. According to paragraph 1, the ultimate purpose of psychologists’ activity is to …
1) define the limits of our experience
2) support a framework for human rights
3) create social, cultural and linguistic contexts
4) increase the quality of human life
5. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
1) Unresolved psychological problems can result in considerable economic losses.
2) Work opportunities and equitable treatment are the same fundamental human rights.
3) Our understanding of human behavior always deepens our psychological science.
4) It is impossible for human beings to function, except in a psychological setting.

Your Birth Month May Affect You More Than You Think!
Some people hear your birth month and instantly think they know your personality. Scorpios are mysterious, Leos are arrogant, and Geminis are supposedly two-faced. These claims are repeated so often that they can start to sound scientific.
Researchers have tested them. A large study of more than 15,000 people found no meaningful link between date of birth, personality, or intelligence. A double-blind experiment published in Nature also showed that astrological birth charts could not describe people with reliable accuracy.
But there is a twist. Some studies suggest that season of birth may have a small effect on temperament. The reason may not be stars, but environmental factors such as sunlight, temperature, nutrition, infections, and stress during early development.
So birth timing may leave a faint mark. But if it does, the cause is probably not the zodiac above us.
