The Washington Post has leaked an audio recording they say reveals an Israeli covert intimidation campaign targeting senior Iranian officials after Israelβs June 13, 2025, strikes on Iran. According to the Post, Israeli intelligence operatives, speaking Persian, called over 20 officials, threatening death unless they abandoned Ayatollah Khameneiβs regime.
In one recorded call, an operative gave an Iranian Revolutionary Guard general 12 hours to flee and record a video disavowing the government. Part of Israelβs βOperation Rising Lion,β the campaign complemented strikes that killed leaders like IRGC Commander Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami and nuclear physicist Fereydoon Abbasi-Davani.
Israeli officials said the psychological operation aimed to terrorize lower-tier leaders, using calls, letters, and spouse contacts to disrupt Khameneiβs succession plans. The operation preceded U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, which the Pentagon said caused βsevere damage.β Netanyahuβs office did not comment.
