Ex-Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler conceded on Thursday that he was "completely wrong" to label the COVID-19 lab leak theory "doubtful" in 2020.
In an interview with Kessler, theeditors.com founder Ira Stoll brought up the eroding trust in fact-checkers from conservatives, using the 2020 Washington Post fact check titled "Was the new coronavirus accidentally released from a Wuhan lab? Itβs doubtful." as an example.
Kessler defended the work done on the piece by his Fact Checker video team but blamed himself for the backlash for adding the words "itβs doubtful" to the headline. He described being called out by co-author Sarah Cahlan after it was published.
"One of the reporters on the piece came up to me the next day and said, βI think you made a real mistake by putting 'it's doubtful' here. Because I'm uncertain where it stands, and you framed it in a way that made it seem more definitive than what we came up with,β" Kessler recalled.
He continued, "That's on me. I screwed up. She recently left the Washington Post to go to another place. In my goodbye remarks, I mentioned, this explains why you should always listen to Sarah, because she's right, and I was completely wrong about this."
Kessler argued that the fact check primarily focused on the claim that the coronavirus was a bioweapon rather than whether the virus came from nature or a lab.
"It's the headline. The piece itself..." Kessler said. "People only remember the headline," Stoll interrupted. "Like I said, that's on me," Kessler replied.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) called for an investigation into Meta following a report that the company let its chatbot flirt and engage in romantic roleplay with children.
Reuters reported Thursday that an internal Meta policy document allowed its artificial intelligence to "engage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual," prompting outrage from lawmakers.
"Only after Meta got CAUGHT did it retract portions of its company doc that deemed it 'permissible for chatbots to flirt and engage in romantic roleplay with children,'" Hawley wrote on X Thursday.
"This is grounds for an immediate congressional investigation."
Meta didn't immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.
Meta confirmed the document's authenticity to Reuters, but said it removed the portions about chatbots flirting and engaging in romantic roleplay with children.
The guidelines put a limit on describing a child under 13 as sexually desirable.
These chatbot rules were approved by Meta's legal, public policy and engineering staff, including its chief ethicist, according to Reuters' reporting.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has released two emails that are significant not only for their content but for their timing, coming just two days before the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska. The emails reveal that in late 2016, then-DNI James Clapper pushed the fraudulent narrative that Russia had hacked the Democratic National Committee (DNC), overriding pointed objections from then-National Security Agency chief Admiral Mike Rogers.
The timing matters because this very narrative β the claim that Russia had hacked the DNC to help President Trump β was used to sabotage the 2018 Trump-Putin summit in Helsinki. Just three days before that meeting, Special Counsel Robert Mueller indicted 12 Russian nationals on charges of hacking the DNC. The indictment was designed to create political chaos. Mueller knew that the 12 Russians were located in Russia and would never stand trial, meaning he would never need to prove the case. The result of the indictments was exactly what Mueller, his team, and any yet-to-be-identified co-conspirators intended: to sabotage the summit and effectively criminalize diplomacy with Russia.
We all remember Helsinki, where, at the joint press conference standing next to President Putin, Trump addressed the alleged hacking directly:
βYou have groups that are wondering why the FBI never took the server. Why havenβt they taken the server? Why was the FBI told to leave the office of the Democratic National Committee?β
What Trump meant was that no one could know what had happened because the key evidence β the DNC server β had never been examined by the FBI or any other U.S. government agency. Trump also noted that Putin had personally assured him, βItβs not Russia.β He then added his own assessment: βI will say this: I donβt see any reason why it would be [Russia].β
The latest emails show Clapper responding to Rogersβs doubts about the DNC hack narrative by saying, βthatβs OUR story and weβre stickinβ to it,β adding that βmore time is not negotiableβ and βwe may have to compromise on our βnormalβ modalities, since we must do this on such a compressed schedule. This is one project that has to be a team sport.β Clapper needed the false DNC hack narrative included in the Intelligence Community Assessment, an Obama-ordered report aimed at blaming Trumpβs election victory on Putin. Clapper advanced this narrative despite the actual intelligence saying otherwise.
What is clear is that Sussmann would later funnel a fabricated story about secret Trump-Putin communications via Russiaβs Alfa Bank into the FBI. CrowdStrike quickly and very publicly proclaimed that Russian state actors were responsible. Conspicuously, the first such pronouncement came from co-founder Dmitri Alperovitch and Chief Security Officer Shawn Henry, who were cited in the Washington Post on June 14, 2016, claiming to have definitively identified Russian hacker groups working for the Russian government as responsible for the breach.
However, when Henry testified under oath in 2017 before the House Intelligence Committee, led at the time by Republican Devin Nunes, he admitted that CrowdStrike had βno direct evidenceβ that any data had been exfiltrated from the DNC servers. In fact, he could not even confirm there had been a hack. βThereβs not evidence that they were actually exfiltrated,β Henry said, adding, βwe just donβt have the evidence that says it actually left.β

Jacklyn Gise Bezos, the mother of Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos, died on Thursday. She was 78.
Bezos shared the news in a touching tribute on Instagram.
"After a long fight with Lewy Body Dementia, she passed away today, surrounded by so many of us who loved her β her kids, grandkids, and my dad," he wrote of his mom, who was diagnosed in 2020. BREAKING: A federal grand jury returned a criminal indictment Friday of New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, capping a years-long corruption investigation that had overshadowed the mayor's second term.
The grand jury handed up charges against the sitting mayor at the Hale Boggs federal building in downtown New Orleans shortly before 1 p.m. Addressing Magistrate Judge Eva J. A government surplus auction company that acquired up to $350 million in unused construction materials from President Trumpβs unfinished wall along the U.S.-Mexico border is reportedly ready to return them to the U.S. government as part of a recent agreement.
GovPlanet was set to sell unused steel panels, bollards and concrete after former President Biden ordered construction on parts of the wall to stop after he took office in 2021.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), specifically U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), is currently in talks with the company regarding the return of the materials for pennies on the dollar. DHS sources told NewsNation that a deal between the government and GovPlanet has been reached but did not provide details.
Published reports, however, indicate that the auction site and DHS reached an agreement last week to have a third-party contractor take control of the materials in the next 90 days.

LEAK: California Governor Gavin Newsomβs plan to gerrymander Californiaβs congressional districts will eliminate at least four Republican-held districts, while securing Democratic control of four other contested seats.
Currently, Republicans only hold nine of Californiaβs 52 congressional seats (17%). Under the new map that the governor wants to present voters in a special election in November, Republicans will hold five seats (just under 10%). Nearly 40% of California voters chose Republican candidates in the last election in 2024, on a map created by an βindependentβ redistricting commission (which Democrats have gamed, regardless).
Politico reported the leaked chart, which was shown to Democrats in the state legislature, whose support Newsom needs to approve his special election β assuming it is legal and constitutional which Republicans deny.
