The Trump administration is expected to issue an executive order as early as Friday establishing a designation for state sponsors of wrongful detention, CBS News has learned, in a move that would allow the U.S. to punish countries that illegally detain U.S. nationals or take them hostage.
The effort is aimed at curbing the number of Americans who elect to travel to such countries, and encouraging the leaders of those countries to immediately free Americans currently held there.
Modeled after the designation of state sponsors of terrorism, the measure would provide tools for the State Department to penalize nations that use detained Americans as political leverage and potentially issue geographic travel restrictions on where a U.S. passport can be used.

NY TIMESπ€: Close advisers have been crafting a plan for President Trump to nominate Mayor Eric Adams to be ambassador to Saudi Arabia, in an effort to end the mayorβs long-shot campaign for re-election in New York City, according to four people familiar with the discussions.
The discussions could still fall apart for a variety of reasons, the people cautioned. But Steve Witkoff, a billionaire real estate investor and adviser to Mr. Trump, has actively pursued the matter in recent days, meeting personally with Mr. Adams earlier this week in Florida and speaking with other people close to him.
It remains unclear if the White House or Mr. Witkoff, whose first role in the administration was as envoy to the Middle East, has formally committed to Mr. Trump nominating Mr. Adams, or offered any other job.
Mr. Adams, a Democrat, has told allies he is considering a range of options but at the same time has publicly insisted he is staying in the race for a second term. His final decision could hinge on the details, though, including whether he could end his campaign but serve out his remaining months in office or would be asked to resign early.
The extent of Mr. Trumpβs direct involvement in the talks is also cloudy, and people close to Mr. Adams were uncertain whether the idea of him being nominated to the ambassadorship had the presidentβs backing. But the president said on Thursday that he would prefer two candidates to βdrop outβ to enable a third to take on Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee and front-runner, in a head-to-head matchup.
Privately, to several associates, Mr. Trump has indicated that he believes former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, 67, is best positioned to win such a race.

President Donald Trump will reportedly attend the men's finals tennis match at the 2025 U.S. Open in New York City on Sunday, a White House official told Fox News on Thursday.
The president's attendance will mark his first appearance at the professional sporting event since 2015, when he was booed by tennis fans. The 2015 appearance occurred just months after he announced his first presidential campaign.
The line-up for the final match has not yet been decided, but the semifinals take place on Friday night. The first match will be between tennis star Novak Djokovic, who is shooting for a record 25th Grand Slam championship, and Carlos Alcaraz, and the second semi-final match is Jannik Sinner versus Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Dear, Dear Mr. President,
As I sit here in this cell (and notice I didn't say "my cell" as nothing I have here is mine and can be taken at any time), I'm reminded to be grateful and how blessed we are as a nation, as well as how fragile liberty is.
I am grateful for the multitudes praying for you, this country, and I am humbled to say for me as well.
I long for the day I can be free to continue to fight for the foundation of our society:
Free, fair, transparent elections.
One week from today on September 11th, I will be 70 years old. Never in my life of 35 years of marriage, a business owner for 32, home schooling my two children, with a Navy SEAL son and a marine husband, did I ever imagine I would end up in prison for following the law and doing what was right.
This should scare every citizen of this country. It shows how close we have come to losing this nation and our liberty that so many before us died to protect.
But God chose you Mr. President, and each one of us that will rise up and answer the call.
Your good friend, Peter Ticktin, has requoted my standards for those that have once been close as a part of the story in my life.
I've always said "if one could be swayed by four things: money, power, position, or fear, they can be compromised. What you do when no one is looking defines your character."

As a business owner, I knew we needed you to become our president. I never wavered, even when there were 17 candidates.
God has his protection over you, as you know, and we are all grateful you took his call.
He prepared you for this, and he has prepared me for this.
Nevertheless, I'm ready to be released because the midterms are close. I feel like a racehorse held back by the starting gate.
We don't have much time. We cannot allow the continued selection of governors, secretaries of state, attorneys general, and fraudulent passage of blils and laws because of the voting machines I exposed.
I want to finish the job we started.
I cannot allow Jena Griswold to be the attorney general of Colorado, or crooked Phil Weiser to be the governor, and many more need to be displaced in this state, country, and in many nations across the world because the voice of the people has been stolen.
The rally cry of God's chosen people to stand up and step forward has never been greater.
Please set me free to champion that call to the people.

BREAKING: Authorities have apprehended two 17-year-olds in connection with the killing of Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a 21-year-old congressional intern, according to U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro, who made the announcement on Friday.

Tarpinian-Jachym was fatally struck by a stray bullet in Washington, D.C., on June 30.

The Trump Media and Technology Group Corp. has closed a purchase agreement with Crypto.com, the company announced Friday.
Trump Media, which operates Truth Social, "will acquire 684.4 million Cronos (CRO) tokens at a price of approximately 15.3 cents per token as part of a 50% stock, 50% cash exchange with Crypto.com," the company said. "The tokens represent approximately 2% of the current circulating CRO supply," which is "in addition to approximately 19% of the CRO circulating supply to be acquired by Trump Media Group CRO Strategy, Inc."
As a result of the agreement, the CRO token will be integrated into Truth Social as part of a rewards system using Crypto.comβs digital wallet infrastructure.

Tesla's board of directors is asking shareholders to approve a new pay package for CEO Elon Musk that could be worth up to $1 trillion in a decade, representing one of the richest compensation packages in corporate history.
According to a regulatory filing published Friday, the electric car maker's board wants to award Musk about 423 million shares, which today have a value of $143 billion, if the company hits certain profitability, production and market capitalization milestones.
"Tesla does not currently have a long-term CEO performance award in place to retain and incentivize Elon to focus his energies on Tesla and lead us through this pivotal moment in our history. It's time to change that," board members said in a letter to shareholders.
For Musk to earn the full pay package, Tesla would have to reach a market cap of $8.5 trillion β about eight times its current value β in 10 years. At that level, the stock awarded to Musk would be worth more than $1 trillion.
