That was a book written by JFK in 1958, sponsored by the jewish ADL. Reagan later repeated this bumper sticker mantra in a declaration he made in July 1981 on immigration and refugee policy.

As you can see, California was actually still a red state in 1988, going for George Bush. It didn't turn blue until the 1990s.
And, in fact, 1994's Prop 187--the "Save Our State" initiative that sought to ban illegals from access to public services, public education & non-emergency public healthcare--was wildly popular, passing 59-41 and sweeping GOP Governor Pete Wilson back into office. Meanwhile, at the national level, Republicans recaptured the US congress for the first time in 40 years.
As you can see, Clinton won the presidency with only 46% of the California vote, which was due to the 3rd party candidate, H. Ross Perot playing spoiler to George HW Bush.
This underscores the point that the one-time amnesty didn't kill America, it was the gradual transformation of American demographics over time that Reagan helped normalize & embed within American attitudes & identity.

But what Reagan didn't realize-- & most other Americans still don't--is that this slogan is a lie--which is why the ADL had to propagandize it!
In 1960, immigration--in the modern sense--had only contributed about 10-30% of the American population.
America was actually a country of explorers, settlers, colonizers, pioneers & FOUNDERS--and their descendents.
Prop 187 might have been able to stem the tide of the illegals pouring into California which was driving the "browning" of America. It was "Heritage" California's last gasp, a Hail Mary of sorts.
Unfortunately, it was immediately stopped by an activist judge who ruled it "unconstitutional." And you'll never guess her ethnoreligion...
It's fashionable to bash Reagan for ruining America b/c he gave amnesty to illegals in 1986. It was this amnesty, it's said, that turned America "blue."
But is this true?
Reagan gave amnesty to only about 2.7 million illegals--roughly the equivalent of 1 year of open borders under Joe Biden. The White population of America went from 79% to 76% under his 8-yr tenure. Not good, but not catastrophic, either.
IOW, it wasn't the '86 amnesty that killed America. Does that mean we should let Reagan off the hook? No.
Reagan actually did something far worse than grant amnesty. He used his skills as the "Great Communicator" to sell Americans on civic nationalism & a multicultural reframing of America--as epitomized here in these speech excerpts where he asserts that 'Anyone, from anywhere, can come live here & become an American.'
This powerful vocalization solidified in the hearts & minds of Americans that we weren't a nation of blood, soil & ideals, but merely one of ideas & values.
This was his real sin.
