THE PEACE EXPLORER
In 2013, Anatoly Kazakevich founded the Baikal-Alaska project in the Siberian city of Irkutsk, Russia. The project is dedicated to the study and development of historical ties between Siberia and Alaska.
In 2017-2019, Anatoly headed up an expedition to sail a catamaran from Lake Baikal to Alaska. Anatoly sailed across Baikal lake, the Lena River, the Okhotsk and Bering Seas to Alaska, eventually reaching his final destination in the city of Sitka, Alaska. In total Anatoly and his team traveled some 15,400 kilometers, a journey dedicated to bringing Americans and Russians closer together.
Anatoly made a documentary movie, and published a book which tells the story of the remarkable expedition. He and his team have built a themed Baikal-Alaska hotel in Irtkusk where visitors can live in rooms inspired by the expedition and the history and geography of Siberia and Alaska.
Next year, this intrepid explorer for peace will be heading up a new expedition designed to bring the Russian and American people closer together. In July 2026, Anatoly’s Baikal-Alaska will undertake a new expedition which will transverse key stops along the route used in the Second World War. To date, the response has been overwhelming: over 100 participants, including pilots, owners of sea plane, bloggers, and filmmakers—have joined the mission—a mission of peace.

BOOTS ON THE GROUND
The need today for a viable anti-war/pro-peace movement is as great as it has ever been. But the causes that once motivated millions to take to the streets no longer resonate with the younger generation, which is more attracted to the allure and immediacy of digital communications.
But the harsh reality is this: just as one cannot win a shooting war through high-technology weapons alone, one cannot generate the kind of political change needed to end current wars and prevent new ones by relying upon social media. You need boots on the ground to win. And the anti-war/pro-peace movement isn’t mustering the numbers necessary to achieve victory.

THE DEATH OF A NATION
President Trump announced that he supports Ukraine’s goals of returning to their 1991 borders with Russia. He believes he is helping Ukraine. All he has done is insure the destruction of a nation.
With one stunning social media post, President Donald Trump ended all pretense at being a broker of peace between Russia and Ukraine. During his campaign in the 2024 Presidential election, Trump repeatedly emphasized that his goal was to bring the conflict to an end “within 24 hours” of being sworn in. While this timeframe proved elusive, Trump remained committed to achieving a lasting peace, even if he was unable to articulate a strategy on how exactly this would be accomplished.

There has never been a more important time for arms control. And the US government has never been so ill-prepared to meet this challenge. Enter Project 38.
Arms control, as we currently know it, is on life support. Without major diplomatic engagement by both the United States and Russia, the concept of placing limitations of the strategic nuclear arsenals of both nations will evaporate. The last remaining strategic arms control treaty, New START, expires on February 5, 2026, and there currently are not any negotiations underway either to either extend this treaty or replace it with a new one. If New START dies, so too dies decades of hard work and precedent which saw the US and Russia move away from Cold War-era strategic nuclear arsenals that numbered in the tens of thousands of weapons for each side, to the current situation, which finds the number of deployable weapons capped at 1,550 each.

STALIN, INDUSTRIALIZATION, AND THE SANCTION-PROOFING OF RUSSIA’S ECONOMY
One of the major themes emerging from President Trump’s administration when it comes to Russia is the notion of Russian economic vulnerability in the face of targeted sanctioning of Russia’s energy sector. Scott Bessant, the Secretary of Treasury, has bragged that if the US were able to pinch off Russia’s ability to export oil and gas, then the Russian economy would collapse, thereby creating the conditions for effective pressure to be put on the Russian government so that it accepts the compromises necessary to bring an end to the conflict with Ukraine.
To date, Russia has shown itself to be surprisingly sanctions-proof, ably managing its own domestic economic priorities with a foreign policy that has enabled Russia to survive losing the European energy market by building up energy exports to India and China. But Scott Bessant isn’t totally off base when he highlights the vulnerability which exists today in Russia to outside manipulation of Russian energy exports. Russia stills operates a classic market-based economy, playing by the same economic fundamentals which guide the capitalist economies of the collective West. An over dependence upon energy to generate the revenue necessary to keep the Russian economy afloat leaves Russia vulnerable to policies enacted by its geopolitical foes which seek to suppress Russia’s energy export market.
But Russia may have an ace up its sleeve when it comes to defeating any success the West might hypothetically have in pinching off Russian energy markets. Specialists in international finance and Russian history cite Stalin’s industrialization (and especially the first three five-year plans from 1928 to 1940) as an example of the kind of top-down structural transformation that Russia could enact in response to any successful sanctioning of Russia’s energy exports. This kind of centralized economic mobilization would create the potential for Russia to reallocate resources away from the existing market economy to a self-sufficient economic model similar to what Stalin employed to overcome the impact of the economic isolation the Soviet Union was plunged into in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution and Civil War brought on by sanctions imposed by Russia’s former European allies.
The Russian government has not taken the drastic step of replicating the economic miracle brought on by Stalin’s brutal industrialization of the Soviet economy, for the main reason that the market-based economy has shown itself to be resilient in the face of western efforts to collapse it. But if conditions changed for the worse, these specialists contend, Russia has the ability to transition to a mobilized economic model that would build upon Russia’s self-sufficiency in strategic resources, allowing for continued economic growth and functionality outside the framework of traditional global markets.

Like most post-World War Two liquid-fueled missiles, the Al Hussein had its roots in the German V-2 rocket program. The Soviets, like their erstwhile American and British allies, were very interested in gaining access to the technology and scientists associated with the V-2 project. In the immediate aftermath of the war, the Soviet Army rounded up nearly 200 German specialists affiliated with the V-2 program to reconstitute a V-2 production line. In May 1946, responsibility for establishing a Soviet ballistic missile production capability was formally granted to Dmitri Ustinov, the Minister for Armaments, who took control of the reconstituted V-2 program and moved it onto Soviet territory. By 1947 Ustinov had established two German-run facilities, one a test launch range at Kapustin Yar, and the other a missile research and development center located on Gorodomlya Island, north of Moscow which built and tested the R-1 rocket (known in the West as the “Scunner”).

One patrol of 20 men, mounted on four stripped-down Pinzgauer 6x6 offroad mobility vehicles armed with heavy weapons such as the .50 caliber machinegun and Mk. 19 40mm automatic grenade launcher.
