Eiserne Säule in Delhi, Indien
Die Eiserne Säule in Delhi ist weltweit eines der ältesten erhaltenen Monumente aus Eisen. Sie steht im Qutb-Komplex und stammt aus dem 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr.
Sie wurde zu Ehren des hinduistischen Gottes Vishnu und des Königs Chandragupta II. errichtet. Die Säule besteht aus fast reinem Schmiedeeisen und ist 7,21 m hoch (davon 1,12 m im Boden), 6,5 t schwer und hat an ihrem unteren Ende einen Durchmesser von 42 cm, der nach oben hin auf etwa 30 cm abnimmt.
Sie ist besonders bemerkenswert, da sie trotz ihres Alters kaum Anzeichen von Rost zeigt. Dies verdankt sie einer schützenden Schicht namens Misawit, die sich im Laufe der Jahre gebildet hat und die Korrosion verhindert.
Nach verschiedenen Beschädigungen und Schmierereien wurde um die ursprünglich frei stehende Eiserne Säule 1997 ein Zaun errichtet.
