Hi everyone,
I’m a solo developer building a community-driven web application. The backend is already built (Spring Boot, PostgreSQL, Redis, Nginx as reverse proxy). For the frontend, I’m using React, Vite, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS.
I am currently at an architectural crossroads regarding the separation of public-facing pages and the admin dashboard. My goals are:
* Security & Obscurity: The admin panel should be as 'undiscoverable' as possible (completely excluded from SEO, no indexing).
* SEO & Performance: The public site must remain SEO-friendly and highly performant.
* Developer Experience (DX): High development speed and low maintenance overhead for a solo developer.
* Efficiency: Keeping infrastructure costs and build times low.
I am torn between two options:
Option A: Single Repo, Subdomain-Based (Monorepo-ish)
* Both public and admin code reside in the same React project.
* Using Vite's code splitting and lazy loading to ensure admin components only load on the admin subdomain.
* Nginx handles subdomain routing (e.g., myapp.com → public, x9k-p4nel.myapp.com → admin).
* Using an obfuscated subdomain for the admin panel.
* Strict robots.txt and noindex tags for the admin routes.
Option B: Separate Repos, Subdomain-Based
* Two distinct repositories: one for the public frontend, one for the admin dashboard.
* Separate Vite projects, separate build pipelines, and separate deployments.
* Both consume the same backend API.
* Subdomain routing is the same as above (obfuscated subdomain).
My questions are:
1. In Option A, how effective is code splitting at preventing 'bundle leakage'? Is it practically secure to have admin logic/routes present in the same build, even if lazy-loaded?
2. How sustainable is it to use Vite with multiple entry points or different build modes to generate entirely separate bundles for public and admin within a single repo?
3. The admin panel will include heavy libraries (DataTables, Charts, Rich Text Editors). Can I truly keep the public bundle 'clean' in a single-repo setup without accidentally importing admin dependencies?
4. From a solo developer's perspective, which is more sensible? Does the convenience of a single repo outweigh the isolation and security benefits of separate repos?
5. What is the 'industry standard' for medium-scale community platforms in this regard? Which one would you choose and why?
I would love to hear your experiences, the pitfalls you've encountered, and your recommended approach. Thanks in advance!
