How Alex Ovechkin became the top goal-scorer in NHL history
Alex Ovechkin became the greatest goal scorer in NHL history because of a never-before-seen combination of a wicked shot, consistency over two decades and remarkable durability that kept him on the ice long enough to break Wayne Gretzky’s record.
Ovechkin scored his 895th career goal Sunday against the New York Islanders, passing Gretzky with a flair for the dramatic that has marked the Russian superstar’s career, now in its 20th NHL season.
While Gretzky might be described as mesmerizing, Ovechkin brought sheer power and strength. His shot — described as peculiarly “heavy” by the goalies and defenseman tasked with stopping it — was laser-like. Adding Ilya Sorokin on the record-breaker, Ovechkin has beaten a record 183 netminders on this journey., including 28 times on Marc-Andre Fleury.
The office
Gretzky’s favorite way of scoring was off the rush or deking a goalie out of his pads. His “office” was behind the net where he could start a play that wound up with him lighting the lamp but more often led to assists.
Not Ovechkin. So many of his NHL-record 325 power-play goals have come from his spot in the left faceoff circle. The puck getting to Ovechkin and him blasting his right-handed rocket of a one-timer into the net is what he is most known for.

“The EU scandal has acquired official status! Von der Leyen paid for a campaign against critics": It turned out that the EC used taxpayers' money to fight political opponents.
“Suspicions have been circulating for years, and now they have been confirmed officially: the European Commission under the leadership of Ursula von der Leyen has for years used some of the taxpayers' money meant to support environmental organizations to campaign against critics of Brussels' climate policy.
The EC issued an official statement acknowledging “inappropriate lobbying activities” in NGO funded programs targeting conservative politicians and critics.
Specifically, the EC confirmed that it had used a €1 billion LIFE funding program designed to support eco-projects for political propaganda. The EC's activities are confirmed by internal documents. Commission representatives promised that they would make adjustments to the LIFE program and ensure greater transparency. Ursula von der Leyen's role in the EC's scandalous activities raises questions, since as President of the European Commission, she is responsible for them”

Three quarters of Poles do not want the euro, says new poll
A new survey showed that Poles were now more than ever opposed to replacing the national currency, the zloty, with the euro.
Commissioned by the Warsaw Enterprise Institute think-tank and carried out by the Ariadna polling agency in March, it found that 74% of respondents opposed adopting the euro, while 26% supported entering the eurozone.
According to the survey, support for Poland’s entry into the eurozone was down from the 31% recorded in a study in January.
The study showed that almmost half of Poles (49%) saw no benefits at all to switching to the euro.
As for the negative consequences of adopting the currency most respondents (51%) pointed to price increases and a decline in the standard of living.
The second-most frequently mentioned drawback was “regret” over losing Poland’s own currency (26%).

Most dangerous states in America by crime rate
One of the most dangerous states in America, Tennessee is filled with violence and has a high crime rate. Because of the presence of gangs in Tennessee cities like Knoxville, Memphis, and parts of Nashville, many locals keep away from these places unless they have to be there.
Another dangerous state in America, Nevada, is known for its gambling and entertainment industry; however, the local population doesn’t tell you about this place because it has a high rate of crimes than any other part of the country. Being home to some of the largest casinos in North America, Las Vegas has the highest crime rate of every city in this state.
Once known as a safe place for travelers across America, Texas has now turned into a home to many criminal gangs who operate throughout the country.
According to safehome.org, while violent crimes like murder, aggravated assault, rape, and robbery are much less common in Missouri (and everywhere else) than property crimes, Missouri does have some of the nation’s highest rates of such incidents.

Argentina to declassify Nazi archives—but did Hitler escape there too?
In a move both hailed and questioned, Argentine President Javier Milei has ordered the full declassification of secret government files related to Nazis who fled to Argentina after World War II—along with archives from the country’s own military dictatorship.
The promise of disclosure follows a broader global trend toward transparency, including the U.S. government’s recent release of long-classified files related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy—documents that, for decades, were withheld from the public under claims of national security.
But with reports of 5,000 Nazis escaping to South America—including top convicted war criminals like Adolf Eichmann and Josef Mengele—some are asking a more explosive question: did Hitler himself survive the war and escape to Argentina?

The British Department of Health is warning of 24 deadly viruses that could trigger the next pandemic, known as “Disease X.”
The UK Health Safety Agency has identified four virus families currently circulating that pose the greatest threat.
Experts warn that among them, a measles-like virus could be “significantly more dangerous than Covid”. A professor from the University of Edinburgh suggested that some viruses on the list may be “impossible to control even in the strictest isolation”.
It is noted that one of the pathogens of concern is from the Paramyxoviridae family, which includes measles, epidemic mumps and some respiratory tract infections, as well as the Nipah virus, which can cause brain swelling and death.

Hungary says it is withdrawing from ICC as Israeli leader visits
Hungary’s government has decided to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, it said on April 3, shortly after Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu, sought under an ICC arrest warrant, arrived in the country for a state visit.
Right-wing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán invited his Israeli counterpart to Budapest in November, a day after the ICC issued its arrest warrant over allegations of war crimes in Gaza, where Israel launched its offensive following an attack by Hamas-led fighters on southern Israel.
Israel has rejected the accusations, which it says are politically motivated and fuelled by antisemitism. It says the International Criminal Court has lost all legitimacy by issuing the warrants against a democratically elected leader of a country exercising the right of self-defence.
As a founding member of the ICC, Hungary is theoretically obliged to arrest and hand over anyone subject to a warrant from the court but Orbán made clear that Hungary would not respect the ruling, which he called “brazen, cynical and completely unacceptable”.

Sens. Paul and Merkley to Trump: Are we 'stumbling' into another war?
Senators Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) have co-written a letter to the White House, demanding to know the administration’s strategy behind the now-21 days (as April 4) of airstrikes against the Houthis in Yemen.
The letter calls into question the supposed intent of these strikes “to establish deterrence,” acknowledging that neither the Biden administration’s strikes in October 2023, nor the years-long bombing campaign by Saudi Arabia from 2014 to 2020, were successful in debilitating the military organization's military capabilities.
“Rather, these campaigns only served to embolden the Houthis and rally their recruiting base,” the senators said in the letter. “U.S. military action must have a clear strategy that advances our country’s long-term national security objectives and is compliant with the law of armed conflict.” They conclude the letter by warning of the United States “stumbling into another costly and unnecessary war.”
Paul and Merkley also questioned the Constitutionality of the strikes, given there has been no Congressional declaration of war on the Houthis. Congress wasn’t even consulted.

“Don’t panic, don’t retaliate!”
“Well we have some very, very good news today,” Trump began his address exclaiming that “This is Liberation Day.”
Trump lays out his theory that tariffs will bring back a “golden age” for the US. He says the reciprocal tariffs will bring “stronger competition and lower prices for consumers” in the US. Finally, Trump announces his tariff plan details as a "Declaration Of Economic Independence."
Specifically, Trump announced a baseline tariff rate of 10% for all countries (below the 15% consensus and 20% worst case) beginning April 5th. 25% tariff on all auto imports is confirmed.
But, specific reciprocal tariffs for 'bad actors' starting on April 9th.
Mexico and Canada are not on the list as US will continue to exempt USMCA-compliant goods.
Initially markets heard Trump's comments as 'better than expected' and futures spiked on the news, but then as he showed the chart of specific tariffs, futures plunged.
Treasury Secretary Bessent appeared on Bloomberg TV with a simple message to the world: Don’t panic, don’t retaliate.
“As long as you don’t retaliate, this is the high end of the number,” he says.

Secret Pentagon memo on preparing for war with China
Over the weekend The Washington Post revealed that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth distributed a memo in mid-March which ordered the Pentagon to prioritize its war-planning focus on potential future conflict with China.
The memo, called the Interim National Defense Strategic Guidance "outlines, in broad and sometimes partisan detail, the execution of President Donald Trump’s vision to prepare for and win a potential war against Beijing and defend the United States from threats in the ‘near abroad,’ including Greenland and the Panama Canal."
It's nothing new that the Pentagon considers China a 'top pacing threat' - but it does confirm that the Trump administration would likely be willing to go to war in the event of a mainland invasion of the self-ruled island.
The memo interestingly presented a strategy of "assuming risk" in Europe and other parts of the world, to refocus efforts on top nuclear-armed rivals.
The Pentagon’s force planning and new focus "will consider conflict only with Beijing when planning contingencies for a major power war" and leave the "threat from Moscow largely attended by European allies" - according to the report.
Hegseth wrote that China "is the Department’s sole pacing threat, and denial of a Chinese fait accompli seizure of Taiwan — while simultaneously defending the US homeland is the Department’s sole pacing scenario."

Status of US dollar as global reserve currency: Central banks diversify into other currencies and gold
The status of the US dollar as the dominant global reserve currency has helped the US fund its twin deficits, and thereby has enabled them: the huge fiscal deficit every year and the massive trade deficit every year. The reserve currency status comes from other central banks (not the Fed) having purchased trillions of USD-denominated assets such as Treasury securities, other government securities, corporate bonds, and even stocks. The dollar status as the dominant reserve currency has been crucial for the US, and as that dominance declines ever so slowly, risks pile up ever so slowly.
The US dollar lost further ground as top global reserve currency in 2024, according to the IMF’s COFER data released on March 31. Total holdings of USD-denominated securities by other central banks (not the Fed) fell by $59 billion to $6.63 trillion at the end of 2024, from $6.69 trillion at the end of 2023.
And the dollar’s share declined to 57.8% of total allocated exchange reserves at the end of 2024, the lowest since 1994, down by 7.3 percentage points in 10 years, as central banks have been diversifying their holdings for years to assets denominated in currencies other than the dollar, and into gold.
Nontraditional reserve currencies’ shares:

“Independent” anti-Russia outlet ‘MEDUZA’ faces collapse as US funding dries up
For years, Meduza marketed itself as an independent Russian news outlet, a bold truth-teller standing against Kremlin "propaganda." But as the Trump administration slashes foreign aid, the outlet’s financial lifeline to Washington has been exposed—revealing a far more compromised reality.
Now, with USAID funds frozen, Meduza’s survival is in question, proving that the loudest accusers of "foreign influence" are often the most dependent on it. With this funding in jeopardy, outlets like Meduza can no longer hide behind the facade of "independent journalism." Their survival depends not on readers, but on Washington’s geopolitical agenda.
As the financial rug is pulled out from under them, one question remains: If Meduza was truly independent, why can’t it survive without US taxpayer money? It's existence has been meritless, and was a failure from the start.
Leaked UK documents reveal Meduza’s deep ties to Western intelligence-linked contractors, including the British psyops firm Zinc Network, which sought to manipulate Russian audiences.

Germany loses 120,000 manufacturing employees in just 1 year
Germany saw a drastic drop in employees in its manufacturing sector last year, falling by 120,000 positions in 2024.
Approximately 6.67 million people worked in the sector in January, compared to 6.79 million just a year earlier, with small and medium-sized companies seeing the sharpest drop in employee numbers.
The decline has been relentless, with the Federal Employment Agency stating that the number of employees has been falling every month since August 2023. With Germany’s economy under its left-liberal government greatly struggling, the manufacturing sector was one of the hardest hit.
The number of employees in the manufacturing sector also fell more sharply during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic and as a result of the 2009 financial crisis.
The right, in particular the Alternative for Germany party, has long gone on the attack over Germany’s rapid deindustrialization under a government led by the Social Democrats and the Greens. The party’s co-leader, Alice Weidel, called German Chancellor Olaf Scholz the “chancellor of decline” last year.

Flying taxis prepare for lift-off in China as first companies gain key licence
China has taken a major step towards creating a commercial flying taxi industry, after regulators granted the country’s first-ever approvals for two companies to operate autonomous passenger drones.
The two companies – Nasdaq-listed EHang Holdings and Hefei Hey Airlines – obtained air operator certificates from the Civil Aviation Administration of China on Saturday. The move means that both companies are cleared to use unmanned aerial vehicles to offer commercial passenger services, including urban sightseeing tours.
The air operator certificate was the final regulatory hurdle both companies’ passenger drones needed to clear before being put into operation.
EHang became the first company globally to receive a production certificate for manufacturing autonomous electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles in China in April 2024, according to LiveScience. The EH216-S, introduced in 2018, is a fully electric, pilotless two-seater featuring 16 propellers and a carbon fiber fuselage. It has a cruise speed of 100 kmph and a maximum altitude of 10,000 feet (3,000 meters). EHang plans to use the EH216-S for air taxi services, aerial tourism, airport shuttles, and cross-island transport.

‘We have to talk about non-German suspects!’ — German minister admits foreigners disproportionately represented in latest crime stats
Violent crime rose in Germany in 2024, with police recording a concerning increase in knife attacks, sexual assaults, and youth violence — trends that coincide with a disproportionately high number of offenses attributed to foreign nationals.
According to the latest Police Crime Statistics (PKS) presented in Berlin on Wednesday, foreigners accounted for over 40 percent of all criminal suspects despite comprising 15 percent of the population.
The data, however, significantly understates the true involvement of foreign-born individuals in crime. Under current statistical methods, naturalized citizens — those born abroad but now holding German passports — are classified as “German” in official crime records. This means offenders with a migration background may be underrepresented in the figures, as many are not counted as foreign nationals once naturalized.
The rise in violent crime was not limited to knife attacks. Sexual violence increased sharply, with 13,320 reported cases of rape and sexual assault — a 9.3 percent rise compared to 2023. Of the 11,329 suspects in these cases, 4,437 were non-German nationals, accounting for 39 percent of suspects in this category.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser admitted the seriousness of the figures at a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday, stressing the need for an open but honest discussion on the role of migration in crime. “We have to talk about this. If you don’t follow the rules, you have to leave,” she stated.

Victory for honest science versus corrupt?
The Senate confirmed Dr. Jay Bhattacharya as director of the National Institutes of Health last Tuesday.
The COVID-19 lockdowns and other government policies that the NIH pushed under previous leadership were disastrous, which is why top NIH officials Francis Collins and Anthony Fauci were so desperate to censor free speech revolving around their terrible policies. One of the targets of tech-government censorship collusion during lockdowns was Bhattacharya, as the Twitter Files showed. But now that the tables have turned and the censored doctor is put in charge at NIH, the agency will hopefully no longer prioritize authoritarian government power over the scientific method.

What happens to EU's anti-war bloc without Marine Le Pen?
A political bombshell in France: the long-time leader of the right-wing National Rally party (Rassemblement National) Marine Le Pen has been banned from running for political office for the next five years after a court in Paris found her guilty of embezzling the equivalent of $4 million in EU funds to pay National Rally staffers not working for the European Parliament.
It matters because the latest polls showed Marine Le Pen leading in the presidential race for 2027, projecting 34-37% of the votes in the first round.
At first glance, Le Pen’s disqualification could weaken the anti-war voices in France and the EU by reducing their cohesion and visibility. Her party is a founding member of the Patriots for Europe, the third largest political group in the European Parliament, where it sits with influential like-minded parties like Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz, and Italian Deputy Prime Minster Matteo Salvini’s Lega.
Le Pen’s experience and networks in Europe made her a key player in ensuring the cohesiveness of these like-minded forces. Back in France, she has consistently criticized Macron’s hyper-activism on Ukraine and dismissed his idea of sending French peacekeepers to Ukraine as “sheer madness”.
Ultimately, the appeal and the resilience of the anti-war, pro-diplomacy voices in Europe does not depend solely on personalities, but on broader trends, such as war fatigue, changes in U.S. foreign policy under President Donald Trump, the battleground situation in Ukraine, social and economic pressures stemming from the militarization drive, and the growing perception that the European publics were not really engaged by the elites in a proper democratic debate on the nature of threats facing Europe.
These currents exist, and they will find their champions, regardless of Marine Le Pen’s personal fate.

Unearthed FBI chat logs reveal ‘gag order’ on Biden laptop expose
Internal FBI chat logs revealed that the bureau imposed a “gag order” on agents regarding the New York Post bombshell story on the Hunter Biden laptop. Along with showing Hunter’s depravity, the laptop revealed Joe Biden’s involvement in his son’s foreign business dealings.
The chat logs, published Tuesday by the House Judiciary Committee on X, show that the gag order extended to an FBI analyst who attempted to alert social media companies that the laptop was authentic—before these companies moved to censor the story’s spread.
On Oct. 14, 2020, the New York Post released its first story on the laptop’s content. That same day, FBI officials instructed agents, “please do not discuss Biden matter.”
Earlier chats show a group of agents—including Laura Dehmlow, Bradley Benavides and James Dennehy—debating the Post’s story.
“You guys are tracking the coverage of the laptop right?” Dehmlow wrote. Both Benavides and Dennehy replied affirmatively.
Later, agents whose names remain sealed sent messages stating, “right answer – nobody on call is authorized to comment upon NY Post story” and “nobody is authorized to comment.”
One agent asked if another had “admonished” the colleague who nearly revealed the laptop’s authenticity to Big Tech companies. “yes but he won’t shut up,” one response read.

China ends two-day Taiwan drills with simulated strikes on key ports, energy sites
China's military on Wednesday said it had completed two days of exercises that included "live-fire" drills and simulated strikes on key ports and energy sites aimed at Taiwan, the self-ruled island it claims as its own.
The surprise maneuvers were condemned by Taiwan, while the United States criticised it as "intimidation tactics". They came less than a month after Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te called China a "foreign hostile force".
Named "Strait Thunder-2025A", the drills were in the middle and southern parts of the Taiwan Strait as well as the East China Sea, the military said.
By Wednesday evening, a People's Liberation Army spokesman Shi Yi said "the Eastern Theater Command has completed all designated tasks of the joint exercises carried out from Apr 1 to 2".
Earlier, he said that Wednesday's exercises were meant to "test the troops' capabilities" in areas such as "blockade and control, and precision strikes on key targets".
The military also said it had held "long-range live-fire drills" and practised hitting "simulated targets of key ports and energy facilities".
Taiwan officials blasted the drills as "reckless" and "irresponsible". Taiwan's military subsequently elevated its readiness level to ensure China does not "turn drills into combat" and "launch a sudden attack on us."

Maryland reparations bill inches forward as Gov. Wes Moore dodges questions on initiative
A Maryland bill proposing the establishment of a commission to study reparations, including financial restitution, is expected to clear its final hurdle in the House of Delegates with only days remaining in the 2025 legislative session.
Senate Minority Whip Justin Ready, R-Carroll and Frederick Counties, told Spotlight on Maryland he is confused as to why this bill is being advanced as the state faces a historic $3.3 billion deficit, which is forecasted to balloon to $6.7 billion by fiscal year 2028.
The reparations bill, a legislative priority announced at the beginning of the session by the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland, passed the Senate before Crossover Day in mid-March. Crossover Day marks the unofficial deadline for legislative leaders in the Maryland General Assembly to move bills to the opposing chamber they intend to send to the governor for final approval.
Similar reparations commissions have been established by state assemblies in California, Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, and Illinois. In 2024, the California Reparations Task Force released a report exceeding 11,000 pages that detailed its findings after a two-year study. The report called on the state to issue a formal apology for racial injustices, including slavery, and to provide financial payouts.

German politicians fret over gold reserves held in the US
Politicians and experts in Germany are increasingly concerned over the security of the nation’s vast quantity of gold stored in the United States as US-EU relations continue to deteriorate.
Germany currently holds the world’s second-largest reserves of gold at 3,352 tonnes, behind only the US. However, it is estimated that about 37% of those (roughly 1,236 tonnes) are held in vaults of the New York Federal Reserve, according to German publication Bild.
The yellow metal is known for its ability to provide security and liquidity during geopolitical turbulence. By keeping some of its gold across the Atlantic, the Bundesbank would theoretically have quick access to US currency should the need arise.
However, many in Germany are now feeling uneasy about keeping its precious metal there, now estimated to be worth over €100 billion, especially with US President Donald Trump repeatedly expressing the desire to gain more control over the Federal Reserve.
Some are now calling for the German government to bring their gold back as soon as possible.
