81 years ago today, the USS Barb fires rockets at Japanese installations on Kaihyo Island near Sakhalin & becomes the 1st underwater craft in history to launch rockets in a shore bombardment. 🇺🇸
Under the command of Eugene “Lucky” Fluckey, the Barb had a special rocket launcher installed for her 12th war patrol.
Surfacing off the enemy coast, she unleashed her rockets in a bold strike against shore targets, proving subs could strike from the sea in new ways.
Barb’s record was already legendary, credited with sinking 17 enemy vessels that totaled over 96,000 tons across 12 patrols. Fluckey’s aggressive tactics, including a famous landing party that “sank a train” with explosives, made the Barb one of the most successful submarines of the war.
From the depths of the Pacific to rocket fire on Japanese soil, the Barb & her crew embodied the ingenuity & boldness of the Silent Service.
