When you sin, always follow it up with the true repentance and don’t give up on the mercy of your Lord. True repentance has four conditions:
1) Be sincerely sorry for your sin.
2) Stop doing the sin immediately.
3) Resolve never to return to it again.
4) If you’ve taken someone else’s right, you should return it to them. If you’ve harmed them, ask for their forgiveness.
Allah says in the Qur’an: قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ “Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.’” (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:53).
