The terms OpenAI proposed allows the Pentagon to still do those things, just not on OpenAI’s cloud.
Altman: “we will deploy on cloud networks only”
OpenAI isn’t saying “you can’t do surveillance/autonomous weapons.” They’re saying these things are “unsuited to cloud deployments.”
It’s a technical limitation, not an ethical prohibition.
OpenAI still provides the models and know-how. It just runs on Pentagon servers.

📢 Powerful new Harvard Business Review study. "AI does not reduce work. It intensifies it. "
A 8-month field study at a US tech company with about 200 employees found that AI use did not shrink work, it intensified it, and made employees busier. Task expansion happened because AI filled in gaps in knowledge, so people started doing work that used to belong to other roles or would have been outsourced or deferred.
That shift created extra coordination and review work for specialists, including fixing AI-assisted drafts and coaching colleagues whose work was only partly correct or complete. Boundaries blurred because starting became as easy as writing a prompt, so work slipped into lunch, meetings, and the minutes right before stepping away.
Multitasking rose because people ran multiple AI threads at once and kept checking outputs, which increased attention switching and mental load. Over time, this faster rhythm raised expectations for speed no through what became visible and normal, even without explicit pressure from managers.

Google and OpenAI employees revolt: "We will not be divided"
The Pentagon's war with Silicon Valley is escalating fast. Over 500 verified employees from Google and OpenAI just dropped a massive open letter titled "We Will Not Be Divided," urging their CEOs to stand with Anthropic and refuse to build AI for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons.
The letter accuses the Department of War of trying to play the top AI labs against each other threatening Anthropic with the Defense Production Act while negotiating with Google and OpenAI behind closed doors.

❗️Everyone’s saying OpenAI got the “same deal” Anthropic was banned for. Read the fine print. They’re not the same:
On weapons:
Anthropic asked for “no fully autonomous weapons without human oversight” = a human involved in the decision.
OpenAI’s deal says “human responsibility for the use of force” = someone accountable, which can happen after the fact.
Oversight ≠ Responsibility. One requires a human before the trigger. The other requires a name on the paperwork after.
On surveillance:
Dario said explicitly: current law hasn’t caught up with AI. The government can already buy your movement data, browsing history, etc without a warrant. AI can assemble that into a complete picture of your life, at scale. That’s mass surveillance without breaking a single law.
Anthropic wanted protections beyond current law.
OpenAI’s deal says the Pentagon “reflects them in law and policy.” That’s existing law as the safeguard, the exact law Anthropic said is insufficient.
Same words. Different agreements. Read them carefully.
