STRIVE TO BE GENEROUS, EVEN WITH HALF A DATE

The Imam of our masjid earns less than a 100k. (I know because we had discussions about it)

He is married with a child and our area is just a keke away from Ikeja, so he is not living in a rural area. Yet, every night, he feeds people at the masjid.

Tonight it is jollof spaghetti and zobo WITHOUT meat. Yesternight it was Akara and Ogi. I think some nights were just Ogi; but every night, he feeds.

You see, a lot of us who do not spend now, when we start earning 1 million, we will still not "have enough" to spend.

For the remaining 16 days of Ramadhan, how about you try to take 0.5% of whatever you have in your account as sodaqah everyday? Even if it amounts to just 200 Naira. It's a life-saver for someone; and that person could be you - in your grave.

Many of us will not do this. Allah has put our poverty inbetween our two eyes because our fear of it is more than our hope in Allah.

We rightly link this verse to Abraha's army, who sought to oppress Makkah by destroying their most cherished treasure, Al-Ka'bah. But ALLĀH thwarted them. This lesson remains a warning to all who misuse power and authority.

The husband who mistreats and oppresses his wife—have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the Army of the Elephant?

The leader who tyrannizes those under his care—have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the Army of the Elephant?

The employer who exploits and abuses his workers—have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the Army of the Elephant?

The wealthy who use their riches to oppress the poor—have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the Army of the Elephant?

ALLĀH said: "As for ʿAad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, "Who is greater than us in strength?" Did they not consider that ALLĀH who created them was greater than them in strength?" (41:15)

THE COMMAND TO PUT ONE'S TRUST IN ALLĀH ALONE

ALLĀH said,

وَٱعۡتَصِمُواْ بِٱللَّهِ
And hold fast to ALLĀH,

That is, seek HIS help and put your trust in HIM, and do not trust in your own power and strength

هُوَ مَوۡلَىٰكُمۡۖ
for HE is your Protector

Who is taking care of your affairs and managing them well, disposing of your affairs in your best interests,

فَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡمَوۡلَىٰ
and excellent is the protector,

that is, the best protector for the one who takes Him as an ally, so He helps him to attain what he is seeking

وَنِعۡمَ ٱلنَّصِيرُ
and excellent is the helper.

To the one who seeks HIS help, so HE wards off from him what he fears.

MAKE THE MOST OF THE BLESSED MONTH OF RAMADĀN!

Twelve days into Ramadān, the visible effects of fasting start kicking in, the rows in tarawīh prayers are reducing, and many are commenting on how tired they are or how thin they look. Hearing these comments is always a very conscious reminder of the hadith below:

Abu Huraira (ALLĀH be pleased with him) related that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Many people who fast get nothing from their fast except hunger and thirst, and many people who pray at night get nothing from it except wakefulness." {Ibn Majah #1690}

With twelve days (or eleven days in some countries) having flown by, this worries me and I wonder to what extent are we actually taking advantage of this blessed month or are we just showing the visible signs and therefore only attaining hunger and thirst?

It would indeed be a big loss if we merely earned hunger, thirst, and sleeplessness from our actions at the end of the month! Let's, therefore, ensure that all our acts of worship during these remaining days of this blessed month are purposeful, absorbing, given due time, and engage our hearts to the fullest.

Anas ibn Malik (ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said when the month of Ramadān began: "Verily, this month has presented itself to you. There is a night within it that is better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of it has been deprived of all good. None is deprived of its good but that he is truly deprived." {Ibn Majah #1644}

With Ramadān offering a unique opportunity to earn ALLĀH’s pleasure, what more can you and I ask for and what could be said about us if we didn’t make use of this opportunity?

Remember, many who were with us during last year’s Ramadān didn’t live long enough to see this year’s Ramadān, as none of us knows if we will live to see next year’s Ramadān, so why not make the most of it now before it is too late? Let's Ensure we capture as many moments of this month as we can because every moment does count. ALLĀH said:

وَجِا۟یۤءَ یَوۡمَىِٕذِۭ بِجَهَنَّمَۚ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ یَقُولُ یَـٰلَیۡتَنِی قَدَّمۡتُ لِحَیَاتِی
And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance avail him? He will say, Oh, I wish I had sent ahead some good for my life. {Al-Fajr: 23-24}

Ibn Kathīr commented: "If he was a disobedient person, he will be sorry for the acts of disobedience he committed. If he was an obedient person, he will wish that he performed more acts of obedience."

May ALLĀH make it easy for us to take full advantage of this blessed month. Aamīn

THERE IS NO HARM IN BEGINNING THE FAST WHILE JUNUB (A STATE OF MAJOR RITUAL IMPURITY)

Among the benefits of allowing sexual activity, eating and drinking until dawn for those who are fasting, is that it is allowed to start the fast while Junub (in the state of impurity after sexual discharge), and there is no harm in this case if one takes a bath any time in the morning after waking up, and completes the fast.

This is the opinion of the Four Imams and the majority of the scholars.

Al-Bukhari and Muslim recorded that Aishah and Umm Salamah said that;

ALLĀH's Messenger used to wake up while Junub from sexual intercourse, not wet dreams, and he would take a bath and fast.

Umm Salamah added that he would not break his fast or make up for that day.

Muslim recorded that Aishah said that a man asked: "O Messenger of ALLĀH! The (Dawn) prayer time starts while I am Junub, should I fast?"

ALLAH's Messenger replied, "And I, the prayer time starts while I am Junub and I fast."

He said, "You are not like us, O Messenger of ALLĀH! ALLĀH has forgiven your previous and latter sins."

ALLAH's Messenger said: "By ALLĀH! I hope that I have the most fear from ALLĀH among you and the best knowledge of what Taqwa is."

THE PROPHET'S GENEROSITY AND QUR'ĀN RECITATION IN RAMADĀN

Ibn 'Abbas (may ALLĀH be pleased with them) reported: "The Messenger ALLĀH (ﷺ) was the most generous of the men; and he was the most generous during the month of Ramadān when Jibril visited him every night and recited the Qur'ān to him. During this period, the generosity of the Prophet (ﷺ) waxed faster than the rain bearing wind." {Al-Bukhari and Muslim}

📖 Riyādhus-Saliḥīn: Book 9, Chapter 218, Hadith 1222

Hafiz Salahudeen Yusuf said: "This Hadith induces us to do two good things frequently and with full preparation in the month of Ramadān. First, benevolence and generosity so that people get maximum time for worship and reduce their mundane affairs during this month. Second, recitation of the Qur'ān and Mudarsah, (reading and hearing the Qur'ān from one another) as is done by two Huffaz in this manner. The reason for the stress on the Qur'ān is that the Qur'ān and the month of Ramadān are closely linked with each other. The Qur'ān was revealed in this month."

BENEFITS FROM THE HADITH

1⃣. The Prophet (ﷺ) was the most generous among people, giving out money, effort, knowledge, preaching, and advice.

2⃣. Ramadān is a month of generosity. A fortunate person will be generous to his fellow Muslims during this month and will be diligent in doing so, following the Prophet's example.

3⃣. It is recommended to study the Qur'ān and its meanings a lot during Ramadān, the month of the Qur'ān.

EVERY MOMENT THAT PASSES DRAWS YOU CLOSER TO THE HEREAFTER – SO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS VIRTUOUS MONTH.

Shaikh Muhammad bin Saalih al-'Uthaymīn (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

"We remind our brothers of the blessing of ALLĀH upon us that we have reached this month, we ask HIM that HE completes it for us with righteous action and acceptance. How many a person wished to reach this month yet did not reach it! How many a person was with us in the like of these nights last year and now has become subject to his actions in his grave! Whilst ALLĀH, The Glorified and Most High, has caused us to remain after our brothers who departed from us to the abode of recompense. Therefore we ask ALLĀH, The Most High, that HE forgives them and that HE does not put us to trial after them.

O brothers; indeed the prudent intelligent individual is he who eagerly takes advantage of the days in full advantage, and gains from its opportunities in profit, because time doesn’t show mercy, time goes by; it does not stop due to the excuse of the one who makes excuse; nor does it halt due to the slumber of the sleeper or the sickness of the ailing. It goes by every hour and at every moment.

Indeed; if your duration in the life of this world is lengthened, there diminishes for you the duration in the future. Every moment that passes – it further distances you from the world and draws you closer to the Hereafter, and thus; a prolonged lifespan is not to be rejoiced with except if the person has spent it in the obedience of his Lord. We ask ALLĀH to make us and you from these people.

Truly; the best of the people is the one whose life-span became prolonged and his action was admirable, and truly; the worst of the people is the one whose life-span became prolonged and his action was foul. Indeed every deceased one who passed away is regretful, so if he was a doer of good; he will be regretful that he could not have increased, and if he was a doer of bad deeds; he will be regretful that he could not have sought atonement ˹to seek the pleasure of ALLĀH˺."

The video was beautifully made (may ALLĀH reward its creator), but I will include the following:

• Wake up and pray at least two rak‘ahs of Tahajjud, and make du'a before eating Suhur.

• Recite morning adhkar after Salat al-Fajr.

• Pray 12 Sunnah rak‘ahs throughout the day (2 before Fajr, 4 before and 2 after Dhuhr, 2 after Maghrib, 2 after Isha).

• Attend a Tafsir class or listen to one online.

• Make a great deal of du‘a before Iftar.

• Recite evening adhkar before or after Maghrib.

• Recite the du‘a before going to sleep.

May ALLĀH accept from everyone!

P.S. The video was made during lockdown, so you can ignore the "work from home" part if it doesn't apply to you. But still, work!

O fasting people, this month is our opportunity for sincere repentance. These days are booty for us. Will we not then accept this price and special opportunity? Take the initiative with sincere repentance before your spirit is taken away. Do not take lightly any sin because your final deeds will also be judged. Many people fasted with us last year and have since departed to their Lord. Does not the authority belong to HIM? And, is HE not the swiftest of those who judge? Yes, they all went with their deeds and left behind their traces.

RAMADĀN REFLECTIONS: DAY 1⃣3⃣

INVOCATION WITH HOPE

In the verse above, Prophet Zakariyyā prays to ALLĀH for a child. Before making his request, he expresses that he has never been disappointed in his supplications to HIM.

One of the essential etiquettes of supplication is to maintain hope in ALLĀH. A supplicator should approach their prayer with confidence that it will be accepted, based on having a positive opinion of ALLĀH.

During this blessed month, when we frequently turn to ALLĀH to ask for our needs in both this world and the Hereafter, we must remain hopeful for His response. Let the example of Prophet Zakariyyā serve as a reminder that our supplications to ALLĀH will never go unanswered. We should be confident that ALLĀH will respond to our prayers and that no one who seeks HIS help leaves empty-handed from HIS door. The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Every one of you will have his supplications answered, as long as he is not impatient..." {Muslim}

PERSEVERE FOR THE BEST

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya (ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

“Whoever thinks about this Worldly life and the Hereafter, would know that he will never gain either of them except by hardship. He should bear this hardship in order to gain the best and more lasting of them.” {Al-Fawāid || Page 319}

Throughout the day, we experience hunger, thirst and tiredness. We experience difficulties for the sake of ALLĀH. At the end of the day, we gladly eat and say:

“The thirst has gone, the veins have been moistened, and the reward has been secured, if ALLĀH wills” {Abū Dāwūd #2357}.

Likewise, throughout our lives we should undergo struggle and difficulties in seeking knowledge, establishing the dīn of ALLĀH on HIS earth, and staying away from the ḥarām. And at the time of death, we hope that we will also figuratively say: “The thirst has gone, the veins have been moistened, and the reward has been secured, if ALLĀH wills.” The difficulties have come to an end, and we hope for a great reward from ALLĀH, as ALLĀH mentioned:

وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَنُبَوِّئَنَّهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ غُرَفࣰا تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۚ نِعۡمَ أَجۡرُ ٱلۡعَـٰمِلِینَ ٱلَّذِینَ صَبَرُوا۟ وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ یَتَوَكَّلُونَ
˹As for˺ those who believe and do good, WE will certainly house them in ˹elevated˺ mansions in Paradise, under which rivers flow, to stay there forever. Excellent is the reward of the ˹righteous˺ workers — those who patiently endure, and put their trust in their Lord! {Al-ʿAnkabūt: 58-59}

We ask ALLĀH al-Qawiyy to grant us the strength to stay away from sins, the ability to persevere on the truth, and make us of those who will attain everlasting pleasure. Aamīn

THE WITR PRAYER AND WAYS OF OBSERVING IT

The witr prayer is an emphatically recommended Sunnah, its least number of units is one rak’ah due to the saying of the Prophet (ﷺ): "Witr is a rak’ah at the end of the night." {Muslim #752}

Its maximum number is eleven rak’ahs. {Sharh al-Mumti’ (4/11)}


Shaikh ‘Uthaymīn mentioned: "It is permissible to make the Witr as three (rak’ahs) and is permissible as five and permissible as seven, and permissible as nine, so if one observes the witr as three (rak’ahs), then he has two methods – both of them are legislated:

The first method: is that he continues praying the three with a single tashahud (sitting for the declaration of faith).

The second method: is that he makes the taslīm after two rak’ahs, then makes one as an odd number.

The Sunnah has come with all of this, so if one were to do this on an occasion, and the other on an occasion, then it is good.

As for if he were to observe the witr as five (rak’ahs), then he should not make the tashahud except once at its end, and then make the tasleem.

If he were to observe the witr as seven (rak’ahs), then he should likewise not make the tashahud except once at its end, and if he observes a tashahud in the sixth without making tasleem and then prays the seventh and makes the tasleem then there is no harm.

If he were to observe the witr as nine (rak’ahs), then he should make the tashahud twice, once in the eighth, then he should stand up and not make the tasleem, and another in the ninth, he should observe the tashahud and make the tasleem.

If he were to observe the witr as eleven (rak’ahs), then he does not have except one method, he should make the tasleem after every two (rak’ahs) and make one of them as an odd number.

˹If he is observing witr as three rak'ah˺ in the first rak’ah he should recite Sūrah Al-A’laa completely, and in the second: Sūrah Al-Kāfirūn, and in the third: Sūrah Al-Ikhlās, and that is after Sūrah Al-Fātihah."

PROHIBITING BUYING AND SELLING AFTER THE CALL ON FRIDAY

ALLĀH said,

وَذَرُوا الْبَيْعَ
and leave off business.

means, hastening to the remembrance of ALLĀH and abandoning business, when the call to the Friday prayer is made. Therefore, the scholars of Islam agree, it is prohibited for Muslims to engage in business transactions after the second Adhan.

ALLAH's statement,

ذَلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
That is better for you if only you knew!

means, 'your abandoning buying and selling, and instead, concentrating your attention to ALLĀH's remembrance and the prayer are better for you in this life and the Hereafter, if you but knew.'

{Tafsi‌r Ibn Kathīr}

"That is better for you" than focusing on trade and missing the obligatory prayer, which is one of the most important obligations.

"if only you knew" that what is with ALLĀH is better and more lasting, and that whoever gives precedence to this world over religion has truly lost when he thinks he is winning.

This command to cease trading is temporary, for the duration of the prayer.

BENEFIT 19: REGARDING THE ONE EATS OR DRINKS THINKING FAJR HAS NOT APPEARED OR THE SUN HAS SET

● If a person eats, drinks, or has intercourse thinking that the sun has set or that Fajr has not appeared, but then it becomes clear that the opposite is true:

• The scholars have two opinions on this issue:

The first: That he must make up the fast, which is the view of the majority of scholars, including the four Imams. (¹)

The second: That he is not required to make up the fast, which is the view of Ishaq, a narration from Ahmad, Dawud, Ibn Hazm who attributed it to the majority of the Salaf) and Al-Muzani from the Shafi’is. It was also chosen by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (²), and it is the stronger opinion for the following reasons:

1 - Because of HIS saying: "And there is no blame upon you for that in which you have erred, but only for what your hearts intended..." (³)

2 - And HIS saying: "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we forget or make a mistake..." (⁴) So ALLĀH said—as mentioned in the hadith: "Yes." (⁵)

3 - The hadith of Asma’ bint Abi Bakr, who said: "We broke our fast during the time of the Prophet ﷺ on a cloudy day, then the sun appeared." Hisham (the narrator from his mother Fatimah, from Asma’) was asked: "Were they commanded to make up the fast?" He said: "It had to be made up for." And Ma’mar said: "I heard Hisham say: 'I do not know whether they made it up or not.’" (⁶)

Thus, the hadith of Asma' does not definitively establish whether they were required to make up the fast or not. As for Hisham’s statement, it was based on his own opinion, as indicated by Ma'mar’s questioning.

This shows that they were not commanded to make up the fast, and if making it up had been obligatory, it would have been preserved in narration. Since nothing has been reported from the Prophet ﷺ regarding it, the default ruling is that one’s responsibility remains clear of obligation, and there is no need to make up the fast.

4 - HIS saying: "And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread..." (⁷) Fasting was made dependent on the clear appearance of Fajr, not just its actual occurrence.

5 - That the ignorant person is excused.
In the hadith of ‘Adi ibn Hatim, he said:
"When the verse ‘until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread’ was revealed, I took a black rope and a white rope and placed them under my pillow. I kept looking at them during the night, but I could not distinguish them. The next morning, I went to the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said: ‘It is the darkness of the night and the light of the day.’" (⁸)

Yet, he did not command him to make up the fast because he was ignorant and did not intend to oppose ALLĀH and HIS Messenger. Rather, he thought this was ALLAH’s ruling, so he was excused. (⁹)

This opinion is the most correct because it aligns with the evidence...

RAMADĀN REFLECTIONS: DAY 5⃣

OVERCOMING DESPAIR AND INGRATITUDE

This verse highlights a weakness in human nature. It reveals our tendencies toward despair and ingratitude, as we often lose hope and focus solely on what we've lost, ignoring the blessing of having it in the first place. This attitude can foster a sense of entitlement, making us forget that ALLĀH is the true Owner of all blessings, giving and taking as HE wills. When the Prophet ﷺ was informed about the death of his daughter's child, he said:

"Whatever ALLĀH takes is for HIM, and whatever HE gives is for HIM and everything has its fixed time. So ˹she should˺ be patient and look for ALLĀH's reward." {Bukhārī #1284}

We must understand that both gaining and losing blessings are tests in this world. They are not necessarily signs of ALLĀH’s pleasure or displeasure but are meant to develop us, refining our souls towards purity and perfection. Therefore, we must accept them with patience and without excessive emotional reaction.

THE BLESSING OF WITNESSING RAMADĀN IS A TEST

The blessing of witnessing the month of Ramadān is a test, just like with every blessing. ALLĀH says:

وَنَبْلُوكُم بِالشَّرِّ وَالْخَيْرِ فِتْنَةً
And WE shall test you with evil and with good by way of trial.

No doubt, reaching the blessed month of Ramadān is goodness, but failing to secure ALLĀH’s forgiveness and mercy—by not striving wholeheartedly to obey HIS commands and avoid HIS prohibitions—would be a true disaster for an individual.

Abu Huraira (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet ﷺ ascended the pulpit and he said, "Aamīn, Aamīn, Aamīn."

It was said, "O Messenger of ALLĀH, you ascended the pulpit and said Aamīn, Aamīn, Aamīn."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Verily, Jibrīl came to me and he said: Whoever reaches the month of Ramadān and he is not forgiven, then he will enter Hellfire and ALLĀH will cast him far away (from HIS mercy), so say Aamīn. I said Aamīn..." {Sahih Ibn Hibba‌n #907}

It says in Ad-Dorar as-Saniyyah: "It means, he has failed, lost, been humiliated, and rendered incapable—his nose has been stuck to the dust—everyone who reaches the month of Ramadān but becomes lazy in worship, does not strive and exert effort, until the month ends without attaining its blessings and without being forgiven."

In the Hadith, it appears that Jibrīl (peace be upon him) gave expression to this curse, upon which the Prophet ﷺ said Aamīn. Being an angel of such a high mark, Jibrīl‘s giving these curses is sure to be accepted.

This indicates that there is no laxity for anyone who witnesses the month of Ramadān. You may relax in all other months, but not Ramadan!

May ALLĀH shower HIS mercy and blessings upon us, grant us the ability to continue striving towards the path to Jannah, make us of those whom HE is pleased with, and make us emerge from this month with increased faith, inner peace, and righteousness. Aamīn.
