PURITY IS HALF OF FAITH, PRAYER IS LIGHT

Abu Malik Al-Harith bin Asim Al-Ash'ar (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said:

"Purity is half of faith; the utterance of  Al-hamdulillah (all praise belongs to Allāh) fills the Scales of good actions; the utterance of Subhan Allāh wal-hamdulillah (ALLĀH is far removed from every imperfection and all praise belongs to ALLĀH) fills the space between the heavens and the earth, and Salat (prayer) is light; and charity is the proof of Faith; and endurance is light, and the Qur'ān is a plea in your favour or against you. Every person departs; he either ransoms it or puts it into perdition". {Muslim}.

{Riyādhus-Sāliḥīn: Book 1, Chapter 3, Hadith 25}

COMMENTARY:

1⃣. Piety in all forms is meritorious. And Faith means Faith in its perfect form. Some people are of the opinion that here Faith means Salat. Purification is essential for Salat and this is the reason it is regarded as half of Salat.

2⃣. Excellence of the remembrance of ALLĀH.

3⃣. Inducement for concentration on Salat because it is a light which provides guidance to a Muslim at every step and prevents him from obscenity and unlawful actions.

4⃣. Sadaqah signifies a Muslim's sincerity and devotion.

5⃣. The praiseworthiness of patience. It is a strong weapon of a Muslim which provides him with steadfastness.

6⃣. The Qur'an is a means of salvation as well as destruction for a Muslim. If one acts upon its orders, it becomes a means of his salvation; if he shuns them, it ruins him.

7⃣. One should not leave oneself idle but keep it busy - busy in some noble work, otherwise it would tend to evil which will eventually ruin him.

8⃣. One should spend this transitory earthly life in the obedience of ALLĀH.

SUPPLICATION IS ACCEPTED ON FRIDAY

Abū Hurayrah reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said:

"The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday... and it contains a time at which, no Muslim prays and asks anything from ALLĀH, but HE will give it to him."

Ka'b said, "That is one day every year.'

So I said, 'It is on every Friday!

Ka'b read the Torah and said, "The Apostle of ALLĀH has spoken the truth."

Abū Hurayrah said, "I met 'Abdullāh ibn Salām and told him of my meeting with Ka'b.

'Abdullāh ibn Salām said, 'I know what time it is.'

I asked him to tell me about it. 'Abdullāh ibn Salām said, 'It is at the very end of Friday!'

I asked, 'How can it be, when the Apostle of ALLĀH has said, "No Muslim finds it while he is praying..." and this is the moment when no prayer is offered?'

'Abdullaah ibn Salām said, 'Has the Apostle of ALLĀH not said, "If anyone is seated waiting for the prayer, he is engaged in the prayer until he observes it.""

I said, 'Yes, it is so!"

{Sunan Abī Dawūd #1046}

Jaabir ibn 'Abdullāh narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

"Friday is divided into twelve hours. Amongst them there is an hour in which, a Muslim does not ask ALLĀH for anything but HE gives it to him. So seek it in the last hour after the afternoon prayer."

{Sunan Abī Dawud #1048}

'Abdullāh ibn Salām is reported to have said, "I said while ALLĀH'S Messenger was sitting, 'We certainly find in ALLĀH'S Book (al-Qur'ān): There is an hour on Friday which, a believing man does not coincide with, while he is observing prayer begging of ALLĀH some thing, but his need is met with."

'Abdullāh said, "The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) pointed to me, saying: ‘Or some part of an hour.’

I said: ‘you are right, or some part of an hour.’

I said: ‘What time is that?’

He (ﷺ) said: ‘It is the last hours of the day.’

I said: ‘It is not the time of the prayer?’

He (ﷺ) said: ‘Yes (it is so), when a believing slave performs prayer and then sits with nothing but the prayer keeping him, he is still in a state of prayer.’

{Ibn Mājah #1139}

There is a great deal of difference of opinion among the scholars as to exactly when this hour occurs. The strongest opinion is, that this hour is at the very end of the day before sunset. The second most acceptable opinion is, that this hour should be considered as hidden like Laylatul Qadr, and the whole day should be spent in supplication and glorification of ALLĀH. And the third most acceptable opinion is, that this hour is found during the period when the Imaam is seated (for giving Friday sermon) until the Prayer is finished as is mentioned in the hadith.

The purpose of hiding this moment on Friday is, that people should remain engaged in supplication and prayer all day long. Had it been explained, people would not have made efforts in seeking it.

THE IMPORTANCE OF RELYING ON ALLĀH IN RAISING CHILDREN

Raising children in general, and daughters in particular, requires great help from ALLĀH, may HE be exalted. In ancient times it was said: "The parents are to discipline their children, but righteousness comes from ALLĀH." {Al-Adab Ash-Shar‘iyyah by Ibn Muflih 3/552}

This is an important principle in raising children. Many parents think that they are able to discipline their children with the educational skills, smartness and intelligence that they have.
They think that by putting the children in the best schools, educating them in the most prestigious fields and letting them mix with the upper classes that they will have managed to discipline them and control their behaviour.

This is a serious mistake.

Yes, parents are required to take all available measures that will help to discipline the children and give them a good education. But, unfortunately, the problem arises when parents rely on these measures, by way of trusting them, relying on them and thinking that they are sufficient and very effective.

If ALLĀH leaves a person to his own devices, he will go astray, and if HE leaves him to rely on his knowledge, he will be humiliated.

ALLĀH said to our Prophet (ﷺ), who was the Messenger of ALLĀH:

إِنَّكَ لَا تَهۡدِی مَنۡ أَحۡبَبۡتَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَهۡدِی مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِٱلۡمُهۡتَدِینَ
"Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but ALLĀH guides whom HE wills."
{Al-Qasas: Verse 56}

ALLĀH’s Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) could not do anything for his son, to the extent that he ended up among the disbelievers.

When Nuh conversed with his Lord, and cried out to HIM:

وَنَادَىٰ نُوحࣱ رَّبَّهُۥ فَقَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ ٱبۡنِی مِنۡ أَهۡلِی وَإِنَّ وَعۡدَكَ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَأَنتَ أَحۡكَمُ ٱلۡحَـٰكِمِینَ
"My Lord, indeed my son is of my family; and indeed, Your promise is true; and YOU are the most just of judges!"
{Hud: Verse 45}

Our Lord, may HE be glorified and exalted, said to him:

قَالَ یَـٰنُوحُ إِنَّهُۥ لَیۡسَ مِنۡ أَهۡلِكَۖ إِنَّهُۥ عَمَلٌ غَیۡرُ صَـٰلِحࣲۖ فَلَا تَسۡـَٔلۡنِ مَا لَیۡسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلۡمٌۖ إِنِّیۤ أَعِظُكَ أَن تَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجَـٰهِلِینَ
"O Noah, indeed he is not of your family; indeed, he is [one whose] work was other than righteous, so ask Me not for that about which you have no knowledge. Indeed, I advise you, lest you be among the ignorant."
 {Hud 11: Verse 46}

Hence one of the supplications of the Prophet (ﷺ) that he offered every day, morning and afternoon, was:

يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّوْمُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيْثُ أَصْلِحْ لِيْ شَأْنِيْ كُلَّهُ وَلَا تَكِلْنِيْ إِلَى نَفْسِيْ طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ

O Ever Living, O Self-Subsisting and Supporter of all, by YOUR mercy I seek assistance, rectify for me all of my affairs and do not leave me to myself, even for the blink of an eye.

Yaa Hayyu yaa Qayyoomu birahmatika 'astagheethu 'aslih lee sha'nee kullahu wa laa takilnee 'ilaa nafsee tarfata 'aynin.

{Al-Hakim 1/545}

Reflect on this important matter of which many parents nowadays are heedless:

We should not rely on ourselves with regard to raising our children , and we should not rely on our smartness and knowledge.
Rather we should rely on the strongest support, the refuge, the One Whose aid and help are to be sought, the Lord of the Worlds, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

For HE Alone is the One Who controls people’s hearts and directs them, and people’s forelocks are in HIS Hand.

FEAR IN THIS WORLD IS A MEANS TO ATTAIN SAFETY IN THE HEREAFTER.

ALLĀH says:

"And those who give that (their charity) which they give ˹and also do other good deeds˺ with their hearts full of fear ˹whether their alms and charities have been accepted or not˺, because they are sure to return to their Lord ˹for reckoning˺."

{Sūrah al-Mu'minūn: Verse 40}

Narrated 'Aishah (may ALLĀH be pleased with her), I asked ALLĀH'S Messenger (ﷺ) about this (above verse (23:40)).

She added: "Are these who drink alcoholic drinks and steal?"

ALLĀH'S Messenger (ﷺ) replied: "No! O the daughter of As-Siddiq, but they are those who fast, pray, and practise charity, and they are afraid that ˹their good˺ deeds may not be accepted ˹by ALLĀH˺ from them. 'It is these who hasten in good deeds.'"

{Sunan At-Tirmidhi #3225}

Abu Huraira (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) narrated from his Lord Almighty that HE said, “By MY might, I will never combine in MY servant two fears or two securities. If he feared ME in the world, I will make him safe on the Day of Resurrection. If he felt secure from ME in the world, I will make him fearful on the Day of Resurrection.”

{Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān #640}

Abdullaah ibn ‘Awn (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "Do not feel secure because of a great number of deeds for you do not know if they have been accepted or not. Do not feel secure about your sins for you do not know if they have been expiated or not. This is because all of your deeds are unseen to you and you have no idea what ALLĀH will do with them."

THE NECESSITY OF THE MUT'AH (GIFT) AT THE TIME OF DIVORCE

ALLĀH said:

Reasonable provisions should be made for divorced women. This is a duty on the pious.

That is, every divorced woman should be given something according to what is reasonable, and this is an obligation upon everyone who is pious, so as to offer compensation to the woman and to fulfil some of her rights. This gift is obligatory for one who divorces his wife before consummation of the marriage, and giving it is sunnah in other cases, as stated above. This is the best opinion concerning this matter. It was also suggested that giving the gift is obligatory in all cases of divorce, based on the general meaning of this verse. However, the basic principle is that what is general in meaning should be understood in the light of what is specific, and we have seen above that the ruling on giving something to the divorced woman applies specifically in the case of divorce before settling the dowry and consummating the marriage.

As ALLĀH has described these important rulings as being based on wisdom and mercy, HE reminds people of HIS favour by saying:

كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ
In this way ALLĀH makes HIS Ayāt (Laws) clear to you, so that you may understand.

that is, HE makes clear HIS limits, what HE permits, what HE forbids, and rulings that are beneficial for you, so that you might understand them, recognise them and be aware of the purpose behind them. The one who learns that is obliged to act upon them.

BE PREPARED FOR DIFFICULT TIMES

Ibn al-Jawzī (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

I fear for those whose heart is content with ALLĀH during times of ease only to fail the test and misbehave during times of difficulty. This is when the real test takes place. ALLĀH gives and takes away. HE builds and destroys; hence the acceptance and contentment of a person with HIS decree shows during both, the good and bad times. As for him who continues to bask in grace and receives continuous boundes, he is only happy while they exist. Then when he is afflicted with a calamity then his steadfastness is lacking.

Al-Hasan al-Basri said, “They were all the same during good dmes, yet during calamines they would differ.” That being the case, an intelligent person is one who is well prepared to confront the war against calamines, which is inevitable. Even if no calamity befalls a person all his life, he should be prepared lest it befalls him on his deathbed. Because if a calamity befalls you and finds you without knowledge that equips you with contentment and patience, then during the moment of death it might take you into disbelief. I heard a person whom I used to think was pious saying during his final nights (on earth), “My Lord is being unjust to me!” Since then, I have been worried and keen on acquiring enough ammunition to pass that inevitable day. And how would I not be like that when it was reported that at the moment of death, the devil tells his companions, “focus on [deviating] this (dying) man for after he passes away, you will not then have power over him!”

What heart would hold firmly when breath will be stripped away and when the soul will be pulled out of the body knowing that you will depart your loved ones to an unknown destination; from which all what you can see is just the grave and perishing!

I ask ALLĀH that HE grants us a belief that would protect us from the evils of that day, so we may be patient and accepting of HIS destiny. We ask the Giver that HE grants us from HIS excess bounties that He bestowed on those whom HE loves so that meeting HIM would be more beloved to us than staying in this life, and that surrendering to HIS predestined decree would become more desirable to us over what we choose.

I seek refuge with ALLĀH from assuming that we have perfect administration of our deeds as this will cause us to resent the destiny whenever things are not going our way.

Truly, this is pure ignorance.

May ALLĀH protect us from it!

PROHIBITION OF JUDGING BY OTHER THAN THAT WHICH THE MESSENGER (ﷺ) HAS BROUGHT.

Ash-Sha’abi said: “A dispute took place between a man from among the hypocrites and a man from among the Jews; and so the Jew said: “Let us seek judgement from Muhammad,” for he knew that he (ﷺ) did not accept bribes. But the hypocrite said: “Let us seek judgement from the Jews,” for he knew that they accepted bribes. And so both of them agreed to take their case to a fortune-teller in Juhainah and seek his judgement; then ALLĀH revealed: "Do you not see (oh, Muhammad,) those who claim to have faith in what was revealed to you and to those before you? They desire to resort for judgement to At-Taaghoot." (4:60)

{Tafsīr at-Ṭabarī, 4/155}

Ash-Sha’abi (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) informs us in this narration that a dispute took place between a man from among the hypocrites (i.e those who outwardly affected to have embraced Islam, while retaining disbelief in their hearts) and a man from among the Jews of Madinah; and so the Jew, knowing of the Messenger of ALLĀH’s (ﷺ) impartiality, justice, honesty and even-handedness, suggested that they refer their dispute to him (ﷺ). The hypocrite, also knowing this, and fearing it, suggested that instead, they refer their matter to the Jews, whom he knew could be bribed. In the end, they both agreed to refer their case to a fortune-teller from the village of Juhainah, at which ALLĀH revealed to HIS Messenger (ﷺ) the above verse which exposed their wickedness, disgrace and baseless to the world until the Day of Resurrection.

BENEFITS DERIVED FROM THIS NARRATION

1⃣. The miracle of the Prophet (ﷺ), that even his enemies testified to his honesty and justice.

2⃣. The forbiddance of giving or accepting bribes.

3⃣. That one ofthe signs of hypocrisy is seeking judgement from other than ALLĀH’s Law.

4⃣. That one ofthe characteristics of the Jews is their acceptance of bribery.

BENEFICIAL POINTS FROM SŪRAH AL-A'ARĀF, VERSE 31-33.

1⃣. Attend the Masjid in the Best Manner.

Perform your Salāh in good clothes, and come to the mosque in a neat and tidy manner. Do not come to the mosque with foul-smelling clothes or offensive mouth odour, as it disgusts both the believers and the angels.

2⃣. Eat Wholesome and Lawful Things to Your Heart's Delight.
If anyone claims that piety lies in poverty and abstaining from good food and clothing, he is a liar. Piety is not indicated by giving up lawful things; rather, it is found in abstention from unlawful things and contentment with ALLĀH's provision for the individual.

3⃣. Do Not Be Extravagant.
Many actions fall under the prohibition of "being extravagant," such as eating beyond one's appetite, spending wealth without reason, or considering lawful things as unlawful. These are all forms of wastefulness or extravagance.

4⃣. ALLĀH's Provision is Mainly for the Believers.
Although disbelievers may enjoy good things in this world for the sake of the believers, in the Hereafter, they will be deprived of everything, even as little as a drop of water.

5⃣. Do Not Speak About Religion Without Knowledge.
One of the widespread evils in our society today is that everyone feels entitled to give fatwas without knowledge. This is a grave sin, akin to slander and false accusation against ALLĀH, lord of the Worlds.

THE MINIMUM PERIOD OF GESTATION IS SIX MONTHS

ALLĀH says,

And ˹the period of˺ his gestation and weaning is thirty months,

Ali, may ALLĀH be pleased with him, used this Ayah along with the following two Ayat to prove that the minimum period of pregnancy (gestation) is six months:

وَفِصَالُهُ فِى عَامَيْنِ
"And his weaning is in two years.
" (31:14), and;

"The mothers suckle their children two complete years -- for those who desire to complete the term of suckling.
" (2:233)

This is a strong and valid conclusion, and it was approved by Uthman and a number of the Companions.

Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar narrated from Bajah bin Abdullāh Al-Juhani that: 'A man from his tribe (Juhaynah) married a woman from Juhaynah. She delivered a baby after six months. So her husband went to Uthman, may ALLĀH be pleased with him, and told him about that. Thus, Uthman summoned her. When she was getting dressed, her sister started crying. She asked her:

"Why do you cry? By ALLĀH, no one has ever approached me (for sexual relations) of ALLĀH'S creation except him (my husband). So let ALLĀH decree (for me) as HE wills."

When she was brought before Uthman, he commanded that she be stoned to death (for adultery).

Ali heard of this, came to Uthman, and said:"What are you doing?"

He (Uthman) said: "She delivered after six months! Can this ever happen?"

Ali, may ALLĀH be pleased with him, said: "Don't you read the Qur'an?"

He said: "Yes, of course!"

He (Ali) then said: 'Haven't you heard ALLAH'S saying,

"and his gestation and weaning is thirty months",
and;

"two complete years
" (2:233)

(Subtracting the two numbers) we are only left with six months."

Uthman, may ALLĀH be pleased with him, said: "By ALLĀH, I did not see that! Bring the woman back."

But they found that she had already been killed.

Bajah continued: "By ALLĀH, no two crows and no two eggs are more similar than that child turned out to be to his father!

When his father saw that he said, By ALLĀH! This is my son without any doubt.'

Later on, ALLĀH afflicted him with a skin abscess in his face (because of his false accusation to his wife). It kept eating him up until he died."

Ibn Abi Hatim related from his father that Farwah bin Abi Al-Maghra' told them that Ali bin Mushir narrated to them from Dawud bin Abi Hind, who narrated from Ikrimah that Ibn Abbās, may ALLĀH be pleased with him, said,

"When a woman delivers after nine months, the baby will only need twenty-one months of suckling. When she delivers after seven months, the baby will need twenty-three months of suckling. When she delivers after six months, the baby will need two full years of suckling, because ALLĀH says,

and his gestation and weaning is thirty months, till when he attains full strength."

PRAYERS BEFORE THE FRIDAY PRAYER

There is no fixed number of prayers before the Friday Prayer. Some ahaadīth speak about the sunnah prayer before the Friday Prayer. There is no limit for how many prayers can be offered before the Friday Prayer, but the minimum is two rak'aat, i.e., a Muslim must not sit before offering two rak'aat. If he has enough time before the Khutbah then he can pray as many rak'aat as he wishes, as mentioned in the hadith:

Salmān reported the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) as saying, "... prays as much as ALLĀH has written for him... his sins inbetween the present and the last Friday would be forgiven." {Al-Bukhārī #843}

Abū Hurayrah reported the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) as saying, "... and then came for Jumu'ah Prayer and then prayed what was fixed for him... his (minor) sins between that time and the next Friday would be forgiven, and three days more." {Muslim #857}

It is clear from the ahādīth mentioned above that, while entering the mosque on Friday one can pray as many rak'aat as he wishes. But if the person comes at the time when the Imām is giving the Khutbah, then he must not sit before offering two rak'aat. The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) asked Sulayk to offer two rak'aat before sitting in the mosques,

Jaabir ibn 'Abdullah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: Sulayk Ghatfaanee came on Friday when the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) was delivering the sermon. He sat down. He (the Prophet) said to him: "Oh Sulayk! Stand and observe two rak'aat and make them short," And then said, "When any one of you comes on Friday while the Imaam delivers the sermon, he should observe two rak'aat and should make them short." {Muslim #875}

WHEN WORDS ARE BETTER THAN CHARITY

ALLĀH says,

Kind words and forgiveness are better than charity followed by hurtful ˹words˺.

"Kind words
" that is, words that are acceptable and not objectionable. That includes any kind words that make a Muslim feel happy, such as speaking gently when having to turn away a beggar, and praying for him.

"and forgiveness" towards one who mistreats you, by not blaming him and by pardoning him. That includes pardoning what the beggar may say of offensive words (when you turn him away).

Kind words and forgiveness are better than charity that is followed by hurtful words, because kind words come under the heading of verbal kindness, and forgiveness is also an act of kindness because you are not blaming him. Both actions are kindness in which there is nothing that may spoil it, so they are both better than a kind charitable act that is followed by hurtful reminders and the like.

What the verse means is that charity that is not followed by hurtful words or actions is better than kind words and forgiveness; rather it is reminding of charity that spoils it and it is forbidden, because only ALLĀH can remind of favours and all blessings come from HIM. Hence the individual should not remind others of something that came about as a result of ALLAH’s kindness and grace, and did not come from him. Moreover, reminding another of one’s favour is like enslaving him, but humbleness and servitude are only befitting if directed towards ALLĀH. ALLĀH has no need of HIS creation, but all of them need HIM in all circumstances and at all times. So the benefit of your charity, spending and worship comes back to you.

LESSONS AND BLESSINGS IN LIVESTOCKS

ALLĀH says,

And indeed, for you in grazing livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from what is in their bellies - between excretion and blood - pure milk, palatable to drinkers.

And verily in livestock animals too that ALLĀH has caused to be of service to you there is a lesson for you from which you learn of ALLAH'S perfect might and abundant kindness, for he gives you ˹milk˺ to drink from their bellies, which contain faeces and blood; from between that comes pure milk that is free of contamination and palatable to those who drink it, because it is delicious, quenches thirst and nourishes. Can this be anything but divine power, not merely the dictates of nature?

What thing in nature can turn fodder that animals eat and the water that they drink, whether it is fresh or salty, into pure milk that is palatable to those who drink it?

THE COMMAND TO ENGAGE IN DHIKR (REMEMBRANCE OF ALLĀH)

ALLĀH says:

And be not like those who forgot ALLĀH, so HE made them forget themselves.

The ultimate deprivation is for a person to pay no attention to this matter and to behave like people who forgot ALLĀH, were heedless about remembering HIM and fulfilling their duties towards HIM, and focused on their own inclinations and whims and desires, and therefore they did not prosper or attain any good. Rather ALLĀH caused them to forget that which was in their best interests and HE caused them to fail to notice that which was good for them and was of benefit to them. Thus they ended up in ruin and disarray, and became losers in both realms; their loss was so great that it could not be made up, because they were the evildoers who drifted away from obedience to their Lord and persisted in disobeying HIM.

{Tafsir As Sa'di}

Meaning, do not forget the remembrance of ALLĀH, the Exalted, otherwise, HE will make you forget to perform the good deeds that benefit you in your return, because the recompense is equated with the action.

This is why ALLĀH the Exalted said,

Those are the defiantly disobedient.

referring to those who rebel against obedience to ALLĀH, who will earn destruction on the Day of Resurrection and failure upon their return,

O you who believe! Let not your properties or your children divert you from the remembrance of ALLĀH. And whosoever does that, then they are the losers.

REMOVING THE PAIN OF WHAT HAS PASSED

“(The pain) of what has passed can not be removed by grieving over it, but only through:

• Acceptance (i.e. being pleased with ALLAH'S Decree)

• Gratitude

• Patience

• Faith in Predestination

and the saying of the slave:

قَدَّرَ اللَّهُ وَمَا شَاءَ فَعَل
It is the decree of ALLĀH and what HE Wills, HE Does”

THE IMPORTANCE OF PAYING ANY OUTSTANDING DEBT WHICH WAS STILL BINDING UPON THE DECEASED

Debt is a responsibility burden that should be settled by the debtor. Every Muslim should have the determination to settle his debt. This determination should be accompanied with efforts to settle the debt. In a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him), the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever takes the money of the people with the intention of repaying it, ALLĀH will repay it on his behalf, and whoever takes it in order to spoil it, then ALLĀH will spoil him." {al-Bukhārī #2387}.

If a person who has a debt dies, then it is obligatory for the debt to be settled using the property that deceased person left. Foremost of that which benefits the deceased is the payment of any outstanding debt which the deceased still owed, since the deceased is held accountable for any debt until it is repaid, and the seriousness of dying in a state of debt is not to be taken lightly, in this regard there are many authentic aḥādīth.

On the authority of Abu Hurairah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) who said that the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said: "The soul of the believer remains suspended because of his debt, until it is settled on his behalf." {Ahmad #9679}

As-Suyooti said regarding the meaning of this: “It is detained and kept back from reaching its noble destination.” {Tuhfatul Ahwadhee, 4/193}

On the authority of Muhammad bin Jahsh (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) who said that the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said: "By the one in Whose Hand is my soul, if a man were killed in battle for the sake of ALLĀH, then brought back to life, then killed and brought back to life, then killed, whilst he owed a debt, he would not enter Paradise until his debt was settled on his behalf." {Ahmad #22493}

Al-Hāfiz Ibn Hajar (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: This hadīth indicates how difficult the issue of debt is, and that it should not be undertaken except in cases of necessity. {Fath al-Bari, 4/547}

The payment of the debt should be settled first using the money left by the deceased before it is divided to the heirs. If the inheritance left is insufficient to settle the debt of the deceased, it is not obligatory for the heirs to pay off the debt. However, if the heirs decide to help settle the debt, then it is included as goodness towards the deceased. Surely, it is a good deed towards the deceased and the best for the heirs.

Shaikh ‘Abdul-‘Azīz bin Bāz (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: “If he (the deceased) had any debts; then it is obligatory to hasten in settling them from his wealth if he had any wealth, and if he did not have any wealth then it is legislated for his heirs from his offspring and relatives that they make payment of it on his behalf, since payment on his behalf is from the greatest of charities upon him.” {Fatāwa Noor ‘alaa ad-Darb, 2/1153}

Shaikh Zaid bin Hādi al-Madkhali (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "It is not conditional that the one who undertakes the repayment of debt should only be a heir of the deceased, rather it is correct that the heir can repay it and it is correct that someone other than the heir from the Muslims can repay it, all of that is productive and beneficial." {Afnān an-Nadiyyah 2/502}

O ALLĀH, we seek refuge with YOU from being heavily indebt and from being overcome by men.

ENCOURAGEMENT TO HASTEN TO PERFORM GOOD DEEDS

ALLĀH says,

So hasten to do good deeds.

that is, hasten to do them properly.

"Good deeds" include every deed that is obligatory or recommended, whether it pertains to the rights of ALLĀH or those of HIS slaves. The one who does them is not regarded as being ahead of others unless he does two things: hastening to do the good deed, making the most of the opportunity when the time for it comes and it is due, and striving hard to do it properly as enjoined.

This verse indicates that the individual should hasten to offer the prayer and do other deeds when the time for them begins, and that he should not limit himself only to that which makes the deed acceptable in the case of prayer and other obligatory acts of worship; rather he should strive to do whatever he is able to of all actions that are recommended, so as to complete and perfect his deeds and attain the position of being ahead of others.

{Tafsi‌r As-Sa'di}

#sadi #almaidah (5:48)

Abu Hurairah (May ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH said, "Hasten to do good deeds before you are overtaken by one of the seven afflictions."

Then (giving a warning) he said, "Are you waiting for poverty which will make you unmindful of devotion, or prosperity which will make you corrupt, or a disease which will disable you, or senility which will make you mentally unstable, or sudden death which will take you all of a sudden, or Ad-Dajjal who is the worst expected, or the Hour; and the Hour will be most grievous and most bitter.''

{Sunan at-Tirmidhī #2306}

Umar ibn al-Khattab (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) ordered us to give charity and at the time I had some wealth. I said to myself, “Today I will outdo Abu Bakr (may ALLĀH be pleased with him), if ever there were a day to outdo him.” I went with half of my wealth to the Prophet and he said, “What have you left for your family?” I said, “The same amount.” Then, Abu Bakr came with everything he had. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “O Abu Bakr, what have you left for your family?” Abu Bakr said, “ALLĀH and his messenger.” I said, “By ALLĀH, I will never do better than Abu Bakr.”

{Sunan al-Tirmidhi‌ #3675}

The former hadith indicates hastening to do good deed before one becomes incapacitated, while the later indicates hastening to surpass others in doing good. Both meanings are indicated by the verse.

ACTS OF CHARITY ARE TRUE WEALTH IN THE HEREAFTER

Ibn Mas'ud (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) asked, "Who of you loves the wealth of his heir more than his own wealth?''

The Companions said: "O Messenger of ALLĀH! There is none of us but loves his own wealth more.''

He (ﷺ)said, "His wealth is that which he has sent forward, but that which he retains belongs to his heir.'' {Al-Bukhari}

{Riyadh us-Sāliḥīn: Book 1, Chapter 60, hadith 545}

COMMENTARY:

This Hadith spotlights in a wise fashion the significance and perception of spending in the way of ALLĀH. The real wealth of man is that which he spends in HIS way and the channels HE approves. Only this wealth will stand him in good stead on the Day of Resurrection. Otherwise, what apart from it, will be personally used up by him in the worldly life, and what he leaves behind will fall to the lot of his heirs. It implies that if ALLĀH has bestowed worldly riches upon a man, he should spend them to the maximum in the way to ALLĀH.

SIGNS OF GOODNESS AND SIGNS OF MISERY

"Some of the signs of happiness and success are that whenever the servant's knowledge has been increased he would be more humble and more merciful. Whenever he becomes more knowledgeable, he would fear ALLĀH more and be more cautious. Whenever he gets older, he would be less greedy. Whenever he becomes wealthier, he would be more generous. Whenever he becomes more important, he would be closer to people, and be more and more at their service.

The signs of misfortune are that when the servant becomes more knowledgeable, he would be more arrogant. Whenever he performs more deeds, he would be more boastful, disdain people, and have a very good opinion of himself. When he gets older, he would be greedier. Whenever he becomes wealthier, he would be stingier and whenever he becomes more important, he would be more conceited."

THE PROHIBITION OF GOING AGAINST THE MESSENGER'S ﷺ COMMANDMENT

ALLĀH says:

And let those beware who oppose the Messenger's commandment,

This means going against the commandment of the Prophet ﷺ, which is his way, methodology and Sunnah. All words and deeds will be measured against his words and deeds; those that are in accordance with his words and deeds will be accepted, and whatever does not match up will be rejected, no matter who the person is who said and did them.

It was recorded in the Two Sahihs and elsewhere that the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said: "Whoever does a deed that is not in accordance with this matter of ours will have it rejected."

meaning, let those beware who go against the Shariah of the Messenger, in secret and in the open,

lest some Fitnah should befall them,

i.e., lest some disbelief or hypocrisy or innovation enter their hearts.

or a painful torment be inflicted on them.

means in this world afflicting them with capital punishment, or by law of prescribed punishment, or by confinement in prison, or so on.

Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said: "The parable of me and you is as the example of a man who kindled a fire and when it illuminated all around him, moths and other creatures started falling into the fire, and he was trying to stop them but they overwhelmed him and still kept falling in. This is the parable of me and you. I am trying to restrain you and keep you away from the fire, but you overwhelm me and fall in."

This was also narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim

{Tafsi‌r Ibn Kathīr}

#ibnkathir #Nur (24:63)

Abu Huraira (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said: "Everyone from my nation will enter Paradise but those who refuse." They said, "O Messenger of ALLĀH, who will refuse?" The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever obeys me enters Paradise, and whoever disobeys me has refused."

RIGHTEOUS AND WICKED FACILITATED FOR THEIR FATE.

"As for he who gives and fears ALLĀH, and believes in the best ˹reward˺, WE will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness).

But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, and denies the best ˹reward˺, WE will make smooth for him the path for evil."

{Surah Al-Layl: Verse 5-10}

Hisham ibn Hakim reported: A man came to the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) and he said, “O Messenger of ALLĀH, shall we start acting or has fate already been decreed?”

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Verily, ALLĀH Almighty took the progeny of Adam from their backs and made them bear witness against themselves. Then, HE announced to them in HIS palms, saying: These are in Paradise, and these are in Hellfire. Thus, the people of Paradise are facilitated for the deeds of Paradise, and the people of Hellfire are facilitated for the deeds of Hellfire.”

The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said: "If you fast any part of the month, then fast the 13th, 14th, and 15th.” {Sunan an-Nasai}

ALLAH'S Messenger ﷺ said: "It is sufficient for you to fast three days every month because, for every good deed, you will have (the reward of) ten like it, so that will be like fasting for a lifetime." {Al-Bukhārī }

Abu Hurayrah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: "My close friend (the Prophet ﷺ) advised me to do three things which I will not give up until I die: fasting three days of each month, praying Duha, and sleeping after Witr." {Muslim}

TRUE HONOUR IS IN ISLAM

Islam is what gives muslims their honour, their glory, their victory. As soon as muslims leave Islam behind them to pursue other sources of honour, they lose it all.

Just look at the Qur'aysh who had the Prophet ﷺ to give Da'wah to them and they turned away from him!

Where are they now?

Who remembers them now?

Look at the likes of Abu Jahl! He was respected for his knowledge, people called him Abu Al Hakam! (Father of wisdom).

Now what is his name and what is he remembered for?

Now he is known as Abu Jahl (Father of ignorance) and he is remembered for his stupidity and arrogance!

Look at the likes of Aas ibn Wa'il from the Qur'aysh who taunted Muhammad ﷺ regularly, at the death of his sons. They called him Abtar (cut off) and jeered at him.

As ALLĀH ﷻ revealed in Surah Kawthar,

Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off. [108:3]

Who remembers the family of Aas ibn Wa'il now?

Is he not cut off? Nobody remembers his lineage!

But look at the legacy of Muhammad ﷺ!

Look at the likes of Abu Lahab and the other uncles of Muhammad ﷺ who turned away, they were his kin! His own flesh and blood! But they failed to turn to Islam. Will their blood relation help them? No! Because without Islam there is nothing!

Now look at the likes of Julaybib رضي الله عنه, the Sahabi who had nothing but Islam! Look how much Izzah he had! Buried by the Prophet ﷺ, a Shaheed!

Now look at the likes of Bilal A Slave before Islam, and a Mu'athin after accepting it! Such a honoured person! But would his honour have come to him without Islam? Or would he have remained a slave?

You have all these examples in front of you! Do you not see?! Do you not see how clear it is?

If you leave Islam behind you, if you leave the Qur'an behind you, if you forget ALLĀH. Then your honour, your accolades, your accomplishments are as temporary as the shifting sands.

Because without Islam, nothing will make you achieve Jannah. The Ultimate goal.

May ALLĀH ﷻ guide us all, make us among the righteous and make us among the upholders of Deen and revivers of the Sunnah.

ALLĀH KNOWS WHAT THE SERVANT DOES NOT KNOW

"And it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. ALLĀH knows but you do not know."
(2:216)

Commenting on ALLĀH's statement, Ibn al-Qayyim said:

"In this Qur’anic Verse, there are several judgments, meanings and benefits for the servant. If the servant knows that misfortune can produce a desirable thing, and that the desirable thing can produce a misfortune, he would not feel secure against the harm that can come from delight, and he would not lose hope of delight to come from harm, for he does not know the outcomes of things. Verily, it is ALLĀH Who knows about that which the servant does not know."

REFLECTION ON ACCOUNTABILITY AND THE URGENCY OF REPENTANCE

The following passage is a poetic reminder about the importance of repentance, accountability before ALLĀH, and the ever-present knowledge of ALLĀH regarding our actions. It was attributed to Sheikh Ballo bin Fodio, who said:

اللهُ لِي عُدَّةٌ فِي كُلِّ نَائِبَةٍ ۞ أَقُولُ فِي كُلِّ حَالٍ حَسَبِيَ اللهُ
ALLĀH is the One Whom I rely on in every difficulty,
I say in every situation: "ALLĀH is sufficient for me."

O you who rejoice in sins at the moment of its pleasure, do you not know that the witness is ALLĀH?

Indeed, the sins that you have committed are recorded, even if you forget them, ALLĀH does not forget.

How long will you continue in heedlessness and play? What will be your excuse for what ALLĀH knows?

What will you say when secrets are revealed, and the fire is exposed, and the judge is ALLĀH?

Repent, O son of Adam, for today you have time, seek forgiveness from ALLĀH, for indeed ALLĀH is the Forgiver ˹of sins˺.

BENEFICIAL POINTS FROM SŪRAH AL-QAṢAṢ, VERSE 71-73.

1⃣. A scientific indication that hearing occurs in silence and minimal noise, and that sight occurs with light and cannot happen in darkness under any circumstances.

2⃣. A strong proof of the necessity of the Tawhīd of ALLĀH, as there is no Lord who manages the universe except HIM.

3⃣. The fact that day and night are times for rest and seeking livelihood is a mercy from ALLĀH, which requires thanking HIM by praising HIM, acknowledging HIS blessing, and obeying HIM by using the blessing in ways that please HIM and avoid HIS displeasure.
