THE PROHIBITION OF LEAVING THE MASJID WHILE THE IMĀM IS DELIVERING THE FRIDAY SERMON

ALLĀH says,

وَإِذَا رَأَوۡاْ تِجَٰرَةً أَوۡ لَهۡوًا ٱنفَضُّوٓاْ إِلَيۡهَا وَتَرَكُوكَ قَآئِمًاۚ
When they see some merchandise or amusement, they rush towards it and leave you ˹O Muhammad˺ standing there.

that is, they leave the mosque, out of eagerness to see that distraction or that merchandise. They leave what is good, "and leave you standing there", addressing the people.

This refers to an incident that occurred one Friday, when the Prophet (ﷺ) was addressing the people. A trade caravan came to Madīnah, and when the people heard of it whilst they were in the mosque, they went out of the mosque and left the Prophet (ﷺ) addressing the people, and hastened towards that to which they should not have hastened, forgetting their manners.

قُلۡ مَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ
"Say: That which is with ALLĀH"
of reward for the one who adheres to goodness and is patient in worshipping his Lord

خَيۡرٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهۡوِ وَمِنَ ٱلتِّجَٰرَةِۚ
"is better than any distraction or merchandise."
Although there is some benefit in trade, it is little and tainted, and it will be the cause of missing out on goodness in the hereafter (for the one who left obligatory acts due to trade), whereas patience in obeying ALLĀH and continuing one's act of worship does not cause one to miss out on provision, for ALLĀH is the best of providers. So whoever fears ALLĀH, HE will grant him provision from where he does not expect.

From this passage we learn many things, including the following:

• It is prohibited to buy and sell after the call to Jumu’ah prayer. That is only because these actions cause one to miss out on the obligatory duty and distract one from it. This indicates that any matter, even if it is permissible in principle, if it results in missing something obligatory, then it is not permissible in that case.

• It is enjoined to attend the two khutbahs on Friday, and the one who does not attend them is blameworthy. What that implies is that one should listen attentively to both of them.

• The individual should focus on worshipping ALLĀH at a time when he is inclined to turn to distractions and trade, and respond to his desires. He should remind himself of that which is with ALLĀH of reward for the one who gives precedence to pleasing ALLĀH over his own whims and desires.

"What we have quoted, when taken all together, indicates that the expiation of sins from one Friday to the next is subject to all the conditions mentioned above being met, namely doing ghusl, cleaning oneself, putting on perfume, wearing one's best clothes, walking in a calm and dignified manner, not stepping over people, not pushing between two people, not offending others, praying nafl prayers, listening attentively and avoiding idle speech."

THE TONGUE AS A MEANS OF EVIL OR GOODNESS

Ibn al-Qayyim (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

"The tongue also carries two severe ills, if people rid themselves from one, they cannot rid themselves of the other. Each one could possibly be worse than the other at a particular time. As the one who is silent about the truth is a devil without a tongue, disobedient to ALLĀH, two-faced and deceptive if he does not fear for his own safety, whereas the one who speaks with falsehood is a devil that speaks. Most of creation is devious in their speech and in their silence; thus, they alternate between the two aforementioned types.

As for the people along the middle course they are those upon the straight path- they withheld their tongues from pronouncing any falsehood and used their tongues in that which earns them benefit in the Hereafter. None of them deem it suitable to utter a word wastefully without any benefit let alone something that will be of harm in the Hereafter. Indeed, an individual will be presented on the Day of Resurrection with good deeds like mountains, yet he will find that his tongue has demolished it all, whilst others will have bad deeds as high as the mountains, yet he will find that his tongue has wiped them all away through the abundance of the remembrance of ALLĀH and anything related to it."

MAN IN THIS WORLD

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

"The slave has three states. The first state is his condition where he is nothing, and this is before he exists. The last state is from the time of his death until the state that has no end, the eternal life. After the soul exits the body it will have its presence either in Paradise or the Hellfire; then it will be returned to its body for recompense according to its actions. It will then reside in one of these two abodes - Paradise or the Hellfire - for eternity. The second state is between these two, which is from the time he exists until he dies. This is the state that lies in the middle and consists of the days of his life. Therefore, look at the time man spends in this middle state compared to the first and last states, and you will notice man's years in this world are less than the blink of an eye. Those who are able to view the world like this will not cling to it; and they will not care how their days pass by, whether they have difficulty and restricted means or ease and luxury."

THE PROHIBITION OF SEEKING BLESSINGS FROM A TREE, STONE OR SIMILAR OBJECTS

It is reported on the authority ofAbu Waqid Al-Laithi (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) that he said: "We were travelling with the Prophet (ﷺ) to Hunain, when we had only recently abandoned disbeliefand the polytheists had a lotus-tree at which they used to worship and upon which they used to hang their weapons. They called it: Zātu Anwāt, So we said to ALLĀH’s Messenger (ﷺ): "Mate for us a Zātu Anwāt like theirs," at which the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said:

"ALLĀHU Akbar! Verily, that which you have said- by HIM in whose Hand is my soul- is the same as was said by the Children of Israel to Mūsa:

"Make for us a god such as the gods which they (the polytheist Egyptians) have."

Then he (ﷺ) said: "Verily, you are an ignorant people who will follow the way of those who were before you,"

📚 At-Tirmidhi #2180

Abu Waaqid Al-Laithi (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) informs us in this Hadith that he accompanied the Prophet (ﷺ) on a journey to the Battle of Hunain, and that they (the Companions) knew that the polytheists had a lotus-tree from which they used to seek blessings and at which they would remain to worship; and because ofthe fact that they were new to Islam, and because they did not fully realize its goals (i.e. to call people to worship ALLĀH, the Exalted, Alone), they asked the Prophet (ﷺ) to designate a tree like for them that they might also seek blessings from it and worship in its vicinity like the pagans. At this, the Prophet (ﷺ) exclaimed, in vexation: "ALLĀHU Akbar!" then he explained to them that such ignorance was the same as that displayed by the people of Mūsa (peace be upon him) who asked him to make for them an idol like those of the pagan Egyptians which they might worship and this was after ALLĀH had saved them from Fir’awn and his people. Then he informed them that this Ummah will do as the Jews and Christians do in everything, including Shirk.

Benefits Derived From This Hadith:

1️⃣. The virtue of making clear that which would refute the charge of backbiting, by saying: "...when we had recently abandoned disbelief..."

2️⃣. The difficulty man experiences in removing ingrained habits.

3️⃣. That devotion (i’tikāf) to a particular place is an act of worship.

4️⃣. That the ignorant person is excused by virtue of his ignorance so long as he ceases his mistake once knowledge comes to him.

5️⃣. The prohibition of imitating the ignorant people such as the polytheists and others.

6️⃣. The permissibility of saying: "ALLĀHU Akbar!" when one is surprised.

7️⃣. The obligation to close off all possible routes leading to Shirk.

8️⃣. That Shirk will occur in this Ummah.

9️⃣. The permissibility ofinvoking ALLĀH’s Name, when delivering a legal verdict.

1️⃣0️⃣. The permissibility of swearing without the intention of making an oath for good reason.

1️⃣1️⃣. That this Ummah will do all that the Jews and Christians do.

1️⃣2️⃣. That all the evil deeds done by the Jews and Christians should serve as a warning to us.

HOW TO ATTAIN PATIENCE AT TIMES OF TRIAL AND ADVERSITY

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

"Patience during difficult times may be achieved by:

1️⃣. Thinking of the good reward that lies ahead. The more you believe in the rewards that are waiting for you, the easier it becomes to have patience. If it were not for the anticipation of the rewards, no goals or objectives pertaining to this life or the hereafter would have been achieved. Human nature loves instant gratification, but reason and maturity make us think of the long term outcome, which helps to strengthen our patience in enduring whatever faces us, whether there is no choice or otherwise;

2️⃣. Expecting and hoping for a time of ease. This hope in itself offers a measure of immediate relief;

3️⃣. Thinking of ALLĀH’s countless blessings. When we realize that we cannot enumerate the blessings of ALLĀH, it becomes easier for us to exercise patience in facing the current adversity, because the present troubles are like a raindrop compared to vast ocean of ALLĀH’s blessings and favours;

4️⃣. Thinking of previous blessings of ALLĀH. This will remind us of ALLĀH’s care, and strengthen our hopes ad expectations of a time of ease to come."

Shaykh al-Albāni (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "Indeed, the matter of having an abundance of followers or a small amount is not the measuring tool to know if the caller is upon truth or falsehood. The Prophets (peace be upon them), despite their call being the same and their religion being the same, differed in relation to the number of followers they had, some having many and others having few. There was even amongst them a prophet who only one man believed in. Rather, there was amongst them (a prophet) who didn't have anyone with him. In that, there is a serious lesson for the caller and those who are being called in this ˹day and˺ time. It is upon the caller to remember this reality and put a foot forward for the sake of calling to ALLĀH. He should not care about the amount of those who follow him being small. This is because nothing is upon him except clear conveyance ˹of the message˺. He has a beautiful example for himself in the Prophets of the past, those who didn't have anyone except a man or two with them."

ALLĀH describes two characteristics that it (the Qur'an) possesses:

● It is a reminder of all that one needs to be reminded of, such as knowing ALLĀH by HIS names, attributes and deeds; and the characteristics and stories of the Messengers and close friends of ALLĀH; Islamic rulings having to do with acts of worship, business dealings and other matters; rulings on requital, and paradise and hell.

● The second characteristic that it possesses, namely that it is blessed, implies that it contains abundant and ever-increasing goodness. There is nothing more blessed than this Qur'an. Every good thing, blessing and increase, whether that is in terms of religious or worldly affairs, or in the hereafter, is because of it and is a result of adhering to it.

THE IDDAH

The iddah, the interval of time which a woman must observe after divorce or after the death of her husband, before she can remarry. The iddah is obligatory on every woman upon divorcement or widowhood.

The Purpose of the Iddah:

1⃣. To determine the purity of the uterus as well as the paternity of the offspring.

2⃣. To provide a space of time during which reconciliation may take place (in the case of divorce).

3⃣. To impute great importance to marriage, having it consummated by conditions, and dissolved by a waiting period and after contemplation.

4⃣. Paying due respect to spousal relationship that the woman may not remarry another before a waiting period.

5⃣. There is no iddah due on a woman who is divorced before cohabiting with her husband. But if her husband has died before cohabiting with her, she would have to observe an iddah of four months and ten days to pay homage to her husband, and in recognition of his right.

There are Six Categories of Mu'taddat (¹)

1⃣. A pregnant woman, whose husband has died, or she is divorced, or her marriage contract has been nullified, her iddah ends with childbirth. The shortest pregnancy period is six months from the date of marriage, and nine months in most cases.

2⃣. A widow, if she is pregnant, her iddah lasts until childbirth, but if she is not, she would observe the iddah of four months and ten days during which pregnancy can be determined.

3⃣. A woman who is separated from her husband by divorce, khal', or marriage annulmentu while she is not pregnant, her iddah is three menstrual periods.

4⃣. A woman who is separated from her husband but did not reach the age of puberty, her iddah is a period of three months.

5⃣. A woman whose menstruation ceased to continue without knowing the reason, her iddah is a full year, nine months for pregnancy, and three months for regular iddah.

6⃣. A wife of a missing husband, should wait for four years before observing the iddah like that of a widow, four months and ten days from the date of his missing.

* If after the waiting period and the iddah, the wife of a missing husband was married, if her missing husband came back before cohabiting with the second, she would belong to the first, but if he returns after she has cohabited with the second husband, the first husband would have the choice of either taking her back after concluding her iddah, or forgoing his right and retrieving the dowry he gave her.

(1) Mu'taddat pl. of mu'taddah, a woman in her iddah, or waiting period after divorce, or after the death of her husband.
