Seeking knowledge – which a Muslim needs to establish what is binding on him from the worship of his Lord – is an obligation that is compulsory on him.

You cannot truly implement the worship of ALLĀH unless you first seek the necessary knowledge required for you to properly put into effect this worship that ALLĀH has made obligatory on you, and for which purpose HE created you.

THE LAST DROPS OF THIS WORLD

Khālid ibn 'Umayr Al-'Adawī reports, 'Utbah b. Ghazwān (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) once gave us a sermon. He praised ALLĀH, then said:

"The life of this world has announced its departure and is quickly turning away, and nothing remains of it save the likes of the last drop of water in a vessel as its possessor tries to catch it. You are moving on to an abode that has no end, so move on with the best ˹deeds˺ that you have. For it has been said to us that a rock can be dropped from the edge of Hell and fall for seventy years without reaching the bottom. Yet, by ALLĀH, it will be filled. Do you not then wonder? And it has been said to us that a single entrance to Paradise is as wide as a journey of forty years, yet there will come a day when it will be crowded."

VIRTUES OF FRIDAY

Ibn al-Qayyim (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

"Friday is the day when the people of Paradise will receive the ever-increasing reward. It is the day when they will see ALLĀH, the Exalted. Those who were the earliest to go to the mosque on Friday will be the first to receive this honor. Thus, the nearest to ALLĀH were those nearest to the Imam on Friday. The residents of Paradise are eager for Friday, the day of such increase, due to the honor they will receive on that day."

DEVIATION IS IN LEAVING THE SUNNAH

Abū Bakr As-Ṣiddīq (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said:

"I will not leave anything ALLĀH's Messenger (ﷺ) did, except that I will also do it; for I fear that if I were to leave any of his commands and ways I would deviate."

📚 Mentioned in: Al-Bukhārī #3093; Ibn Battah in 'Al-Ibānah' #77, and others.

After recording this narration, Ibn Battah (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) states: "This, my brothers, is the greatest Ṣiddīq (true believer i.e. Abū Bakr), fearing that he would fall into deviation if he were to leave any of the commandments of his Prophet (ﷺ). What then is to happen in a time in which people deride their Prophet and his commandments, and compete with each other and show off in contradicting him and mock his Sunnah? We ask ALLĀH to protect us from slipping and to save us from evil deeds."

TEACHING ONE'S FAMILY THE RELIGION AND GOOD BEHAVIOR

ALLĀH says,

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ امَنُوا
O believers!

That is, O you whom HE has blessed with faith, do what faith requires of you.

قُوا أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًا
Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire

That is described in these terrifying terms. Protect yourselves by forcing yourselves to adhere to what ALLĀH has enjoined and to comply with HIS commands, avoid what HE has forbidden, and repent from that which angers ALLĀH and incurs HIS punishment.

The way to protect oneself and one’s children is by disciplining them, teaching them and forcing them to comply with the commands of ALLĀH. No one can be safe unless he does what ALLĀH has commanded, with regard to himself and with regard to those who are under his guardianship, namely his wives, children and others who are under his guardianship and control.

BALANCING KNOWLEDGE AND ACTION

It is reported that Al-Ḥasan Al-Baṣrī (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

"One who acts without knowledge is like one who travels off the path; and the one who acts without knowledge corrupts more than he rectifies. So seek knowledge in a way that does not harm your worship, and seek to worship ˹ALLĀH˺ in a way that does not harm ˹your seeking of˺ knowledge."

📚 Mentioned in: Jāmi' Bayān Al-'Ilm wa Faḍlihi #905 by Ibn Abdil-Barr.

Shaykh Husayn al-Awāyishah said:

"Do not feel satisfied with action, while being desolate of knowledge and do not feel satisfied with knowledge, whilst being heedless of actions. Rather, combine the two, even if your share of either may be meagre. A little of this, with a little of that is safer in the outcome, If ALLĀH bestows HIS Mercy, and completes HIS favour upon HIS slave."

And whoever commits that through aggression and injustice, WE shall cast him into the Fire, and that is easy for ALLĀH.

REMINDER: FASTING AL-AYYAM AL-BEED FOR JUMĀDAL-ŪLĀ 1447AH

The white days of the month refer to the 13th, 14th, and 15th of each lunar month. The moon is at its fullest and most luminous during this period. Fasting on these days is sunnah, mentioned in various hadith.

Abu Dharr said: The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said to me: "If you fast any part of the month, then fast the 13th, 14th, and 15th." {An-Nasai #2424}

Abdullāh ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As said: The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said to me: "It is sufficient for you to fast three days every month because, for every good deed, you will have ˹the reward of˺ ten like it, so that will be like fasting for a lifetime." {Al-Bukhārī #1874}

Abu Hurayrah said: "My close friend (the Prophet ﷺ) advised me to do three things which I will not give up until I die: fasting three days of each month, praying Duha, and sleeping after Witr." {Muslim #721}

'WILL ALLĀH PUNISH ME FOR PRAYING?'

Imām Sa'īd ibn Al-Musayyib (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) once saw a man praying more than two rak'ah after the beginning of Fajr, making many bows and prostrations, and so he forbade him.

The man said, "O Abu Muḥammad, is ALLĀH going to punish me for praying?"

Sa'īd said, "No, but HE will punish you for contradicting the Sunnah."

📚 Mentioned in Al-Bayhaqī, As-Sunan Al-Kubrā (2/466).

Shaykh Al-Albānī writes:

"This is one of the superb answers given by Sa'īd ibn Al-Musayyib, may ALLĀH have mercy on him. It is a strong weapon against heretics (mubtadi'ah) who recommend many different types of religious innovation in the name of them being dhikr and prayer. They then criticize the followers of the Sunnah for criticizing them, and accuse them of censuring dhikr and prayer, when in fact ˹Ahlu-Sunnah˺ are only criticizing the contravention of the Sunnah in matters such as dhikr and prayer."

ETIQUETTES OF SEEKING KNOWLEDGE

ALLAH's statement,

وَلَا تَعْجَلْ بِالْقُرْانِ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يُقْضَى إِلَيْكَ وَحْيُهُ
And be not in haste with the Qur'ān before its revelation is completed to you,

That is, do not hasten (O Muhammad ﷺ) to repeat the verses of the Qur'ān whilst Jibrīl is still reciting them to you; be patient until he has finished, and when he has finished, then recite it, for ALLĀH has guaranteed that you will be able to memorise it and recite it, as ALLĀH, Glorified and Exalted, says elsewhere:

لَا تُحَرِّكْ بِهِ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهِ ۞ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُ وَقُرْءَانَهُ ۞ فَإِذَا قَرَأْنَـهُ فَاتَّبِعْ قُرْءَانَهُ ۞ ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهُ
Do not move your tongue ˹O Prophet˺ in haste to repeat and memorize this revelation. Verily, it is incumbent upon US to enable you to memorize it and enable you to recite it. So when WE recite it ˹through Jibrīl˺, follow its recitation attentively. Then it is incumbent upon US to make its meanings clear
.(75:16-19)

Because the Prophet's hastening to repeat the Revelation was indicative of his perfect love for knowledge and his eagerness to acquire it, ALLĀH, Glorified and Exalted, instructed him to ask HIM for more knowledge, for knowledge is good and to have a great deal of goodness is something that is required. It is from ALLĀH, and the way to attain it is by striving, longing for knowledge, asking ALLĀH for it, seeking HIS help and acknowledging one's need for HIM at all times.

From this verse we learn the etiquette of receiving knowledge, and that the one who listens to knowledge must be patient and wait until the teacher has finished speaking, because what he wants to say is interconnected. Then when he has finished, the one who has questions may ask him. He should not hasten to ask questions and interrupt the teacher when he is speaking, because that is a cause of being deprived of knowledge. At the same time, the one who is asked a question should try to understand what the questioner is asking and find out what he really wants to know before answering, because that will help him to give the right answer.

DEAD HEARTS AND EMPTY SUPPLICATIONS

It is reported that Ibrāhīm ibn Adham (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) once passed through the market of Baṣrah. People gathered around him and asked:

O Abū Isḥāq, ALLĀH the Exalted says in his Book. 'Call on me, I will answer your prayers', but we have been calling on HIM for a long time and HE does not answer our prayers.

He (Ibrāhīm) replied, "O people of Baṣrah, your hearts have died in respect to ten things:

First, you know ALLĀH but you do not give HIM HIS rights;

second, you have read ALLĀH’s Book but you do not act by it;

third, you claim to love ALLĀH’s Messenger (ﷺ) yet you abandon his Sunnah;

fourth, you claim to be enemies to Shayṭān but you conform to ˹his ways˺;

fifth, you say you love Paradise yet you do not work for it;

sixth, you say you fear The Fire yet you put yourselves closer to it ˹by sinning˺;

seventh, you say death is true but you do not prepare for it;

eighth, you busy yourselves with the faults of others and disregard your own;

ninth, you consume the favors of your Lord but are not grateful for them;

and tenth, you bury your dead but take no lesson from them."

Those who fulfill the covenant of ALLĀH and do not break the contract,

And those who join that which ALLĀH has ordered to be joined and fear their Lord and are afraid of the evil of ˹their˺ account,

And those who are patient, seeking the face of their Lord, and establish prayer and spend from what WE have provided for them secretly and publicly and repel evil with good. It is they who will have the ultimate abode:

The Gardens of Eternity, which they will enter along with the righteous among their parents, spouses, and descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate, ˹saying˺, "Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured. And excellent is the final home."

Shayṭān might try to tempt you away from repenting and seeking forgiveness. Don't fall for it; repent to HIM, make istighfār, and if ALLĀH wills, you will be forgiven, shown mercy, and loved. TRUE GOODNESS

It is reported that 'Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said:

"Goodness is not in your wealth and offspring being plentiful; true goodness is when your ˹good˺ deeds are plenty and you have great understanding and forbearance, and when you compete to worship your Lord. If you do good you praise ALLĀH and thank HIM, and if you sin you beg ALLĀH’s forgiveness. There is no good in this life except with two types of men: A man who sins but then corrects himself through repentance, and a man who strives and hastens to get ˹the good˺ of the hereafter."

THE MOST DELUDED ONE

Ibn al-Qayyim (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

"As for the statement of the one who says,

Instant money is better than credit.

"The response to it is as follows: If the instant money is equivalent to the delayed credit, then the money is better. However, if they differ in value and the delayed credit is more than the instant money, then the credit is better. So then what would be the case since the entire worldly life from its beginning to end is like one breath from the breaths of the Hereafter! As has been reported in the Musnad of al-Imam Ahmad and At-Tirmidhi1 on the authority of al-Mustawrid bin Shaddad who said: 'The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said:

‘The worldly life in comparison to the Hereafter is similar to the amount of water one gets when he puts his finger in the sea. Let him then see what it returns with.’

"So preferring this instant money over the delayed payment is from the most striking forms of deception and most shameful types of ignorance."

'YOUR SECRET AND PRIVATE MATTERS ARE BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR LORD'

'Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said:

"There passed by us a time when we did not think that anyone learned the Qur'ān except intending ALLĀH, Mighty and Majestic. Now lately, I fear that men learn it for the sake of people and what they have.  Therefore, intend ALLĀH with your recitation and your deeds, for we used to recognize you because the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) was amongst us, and revelation used to descend and ALLĀH used to inform us of your news. As for today, the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) has passed and revelation has been discontinued, so I only recognize you by the following. Whoever shows what is good, we love him for it and think good of him, and whoever shows what is evil, we hate him for it and suspect him. Your secret and private matters are between you and your Lord the Mighty and Majestic."

As the Ustadh rightly illustrated, as parents, you are the best example your children can have. If you do not compromise your religion, holding firmly to the commands of ALLĀH and HIS Messenger ﷺ, even when it seems difficult, your children will do the same. If you are truthful in your speech, they will learn honesty. If you are patient in times of hardship, they will learn perseverance. This makes it an obligation upon parents to strive to be righteous Muslims, so that their children may follow the right path: the path of obedience to ALLĀH and HIS Messenger (ﷺ).

As the poet beautifully said:

بِأَبِهِ اقْتَدَى عَدِيٌّ في الكَرَمُ
Adiyy followed his father’s example in generosity,

ومَن يُشَابِهُ أَبَهُ فَمَا ظَلَمْ
and whoever resembles his father has done no wrong.

Indeed, children are reflections of their parents, what they see in us is what they will become.

INVOCATION OF PEACE AND BLESSINGS UPON THE PROPHET ﷺ IN ABUNDANCE ON FRIDAY

Aus ibn Aus reports that the Prophet ﷺ said: "The most virtuous of your days is Jumu'ah. On that day, Adam was created and on that day he died, (on that day) the horn will be blown and the people will be dumbfounded! Increase your prayers upon me as your prayers upon me will be presented to me." The people said: "O Messenger of ALLĀH, how will our prayers be presented to you when you have passed away?" He said: "ALLĀH has prohibited the earth from eating the bodies of the Prophets." {This is related by the five, except for al-Tirmidhi}

Ibn al-Qayyim (May ALLĀH have mercy on him) says:

"It is preferred to pray to ALLĀH to send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ during the day and night of Jumuah, as the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Invoke many prayers upon me during the day and night of Friday.'

"The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ is the leader of mankind, and Jumu'ah is the best of the days of the week. Prayers upon him during that day are a privilege (he deserves), which belongs to no one other than him.

"This act also has another wisdom, and that is that all of the good that has passed onto this Ummah, in this life and the Hereafter, has passed through him. ALLĀH has gathered the good of this life and the next life for this Ummah, and the greatest honor and success will be granted to them on Friday. On that day, they will be granted their houses and palaces in Paradise and that is the day they will be given more when they enter Paradise. It is a day of celebration for them in this life. It is also a day in which ALLĀH fulfills their needs and answers their prayers and requests in this world. They are aware of all of that and are able to attain it because of the Prophet ﷺ and it is through him (that they received these teachings); therefore, in gratitude and appreciation for the great blessings we received through him, we should send many prayers upon him during the day and night of Jumuʿah."
{Fiqh-us-Sunnah || 2/126}

May ALLĀH fill our hearts with love of His beloved Prophet ﷺ.  May HE inspire our tongues to send much blessings on him ﷺ and guide us to lead our lives in accordance to his exalted and noble Sunnah.

SUCCESS IS ONLY THROUGH FOLLOWING THE MESSENGER ﷺ

Taqiyud-dīn Ahmad bin 'Abdil-Halīm bin Taymiyyah (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) mentioned:

"The need of the servant to the prophetic message is greater by far than the need of the ailing patient to the doctor. Indeed the utmost culmination of that which can be presumed from an absence of the doctor is the death of the bodies. Whereas if the light of the prophetic message and its existence is not procured for the servant, he dies before it a death which life cannot be anticipated alongside it at all, or that he is left in misery with a wretchedness that has no prosperity to it at all. So there is no success except through following the Messenger. Indeed; ALLĀH has distinguished his followers and his helpers with success, as HE, the Most High, said:

فَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِهِ وَعَزَّرُوهُ وَنَصَرُوهُ وَاتَّبَعُوا النُّورَ الَّذِي أُنزِلَ مَعَهُ ۙ أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ
So those who believe in him, and honour him, support him and follow the light which has been sent down with him – it is they who will be successful.

It is reported that Uthmān ibn 'Affān (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) once addressed the people in a sermon. He praised ALLĀH, then said:

"O people! Fear ALLĀH and obey HIM, for piety is a valuable prize. Verily the most intelligent person is he who takes account of himself and works for what comes after death, and acquires through the light (guidance) of ALLĀH a light for the darkness of the grave.

The servant of ALLĀH should fear lest ALLĀH the Mighty and Sublime resurrects him blind though he used to see. A few comprehensive words can be enough for a wise man, whereas the deaf (who does not listen to guidance) is being called from afar.

And know that whoever ALLĀH the Mighty and Sublime is with has nothing to fear; but whoever ALLĀH the Mighty and Sublime is against, then in whom can he hope after ALLĀH?!"
