አጨብጫቢ ነሽ አሉኝ
ነገር በነገር ተቆልፎ የቱ እውነት የቱ ውሸት
ተመርምሮ ተፈልጎ እንኳ በማይደረስበት
አለም ውስጥ እየኖርኩኝ
ብባል አጨብጫቢ አይገርመኝ
ከሀሜተኛው ጋር ስቀመጥ መገላመጥ
እኔው ራሴ ሄጄ ሳማ ለመስማት ከጎኔ መቀመጥ
ሌባው ከፍቶት የሚሰማኝ አጣሁ ብሎ
ለመስማት ከጎኑ ስታይ ሆ ተብሎ
ከፍቅር የተነሳ ታናሽነት ተሰምቶኝ
ባሪያ ብሆን አዎ አንቺ አጨብጫቢ ነሽ አሉኝ።

1. ስራ የሌለው ብልጽግና (Wealth without work)
2. ሕሊና የሌለው ደስታ (Pleasure without conscience)
3. ባህሪይ የሌለው እውቀት (Knowledge without character)
4. ግብረ-ገብ የሌለው ንግድ (Commerce without morality)
5. ሰብዓዊ ርህራሄ የሌለው ሳይንስ (Science without humanity)
6. መስዋእትነት የሌለው ኃይማኖት (Religion without sacrifice)
7. መርህ የሌለው ፖለቲካ (Politics without principles)

In the great parable of the sower and the seed Jesus warns
us against being deceived by the promise of satisfaction in the wealth
and pleasure of the world. Those thus deceived, he says, are choked
by the deceitfulness of riches; they get the opposite of what riches
promise when they turn their ears from the Word and their eyes
from Jesus in favor of fleeting pleasure and perishing wealth
(Matthew 13:22).
And St. John warns us as well:
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves
the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in
the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the
boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but
from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man
who does the will of God lives forever. (1 John 2:15-17)
St. John, of course, is not telling us that we should despise God’s creation.
Not at all! Insofar as it is God’s creation and used as he
intended it, the world is good. It reminds us of our Creator and his
glory (Psalms 19 and 33). Its wealth can and should be used and also
enjoyed for our own maintenance, for the support of our families and
the needy, and for the work of the church. There were people in both
the Old and New Testaments who were wealthy and were not condemned
for it. The patriarchs in Genesis were wealthy. David and
Solomon were wealthy, as were a number of other heroes of faith. In
the New Testament one of Paul’s epistles is addressed to a wealthy
man, his letter to Philemon. It is when the world, its wealth, and its
pleasure become the goal of life and life’s meaning for us that its use
is perverted, faith is lost, and the sinner perishes with his false god.
Given God’s great generosity to us in his gifts from the world, the
Christian is always well advised to watch out that he not fall for the
temptation to worship the gifts instead of worshiping the Giver. With
just such a caution in mind St. Paul urges us:
Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing
into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we
have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who
want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many
foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and
destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and
pierced themselves with many griefs. (1 Timothy 6:6-10)
That the world and all things in it perish with their use does not
occur to the one who has abandoned the Word for the pleasure of the
moment. That even the promise of pleasure and satisfaction is a lie
likewise escapes the notice of most. But think about it: Who in the worship
of wealth ever was satisfied that he had enough of it and that it
was safe and secure? And who in the worship of pleasure was not ultimately
left alone with nothing to show for his worship but guilt or
shame? Who in the service of this world’s wisdom had real peace of
conscience and the promise of eternal life? All these had only illusion
and delusion, only the assurance of dust and ashes at the end, only a
fearful waiting for the judgment of God in eternity for casting him, his
Son, his Word, and sacraments aside in favor of the temporary, the
shameful, or the pretend wisdom of the moment.
They really meant it at confirmation when they pledged undying loyalty
to Christ and his Word. But then as their connection to the Word
became ever more distant, they were ever more easily seduced by the
fleeting and imagined pleasures of the world. Then they were drawn
away further still by the supposed wisdom of the world in natural science
or the humanities. Finally, swallowed up by the world, they may
turn away completely from the everlasting joy and the ultimate truth
of the gospel.

¹² እጅግ ክፉ ነገርንም በእኛ ላይ በማምጣቱ በላያችንና በእኛ ዘንድ በተሾሙት ፈራጆቻችን ላይ የተናገረውን ቃል አጸና፤ በኢየሩሳሌምም ላይ እንደ ተደረገው ያለ ነገር ከቶ ከሰማይ ሁሉ በታች አልተደረገም።
¹³ በሙሴም ሕግ እንደ ተጻፈ ይህ ክፉ ነገር ሁሉ መጣብን፤ ከኃጢአታችንም እንመለስ እውነትህንም እናስብ ዘንድ ወደ አምላካችን ወደ እግዚአብሔር ፊት አልለመንንም።
¹⁴ ስለዚህም እግዚአብሔር ክፉ ነገሩን ጠብቆ በእኛ ላይ አመጣ፤ አምላካችን እግዚአብሔር በሚሠራው ሥራ ሁሉ ጻድቅ ነውና፥ እኛም ቃሉን አልሰማንምና።
¹⁵ አሁንም ሕዝብህን ከግብጽ ምድር በበረታች እጅ ያወጣህ፥ እንደ ዛሬም ቀን ዝና ለአንተ ያገኘህ ጌታ አምላካችን ሆይ፥ ኃጢአትን ሠርተናል፥ ክፋትንም አድርገናል።
¹⁶ ጌታ ሆይ፥ ስለ ኃጢአታችንና ስለ አባቶቻችን በደል ኢየሩሳሌምና ሕዝብህ በዙሪያችን ላሉት ሁሉ መሰደቢያ ሆነዋልና እንደ ጽድቅህ ሁሉ ቍጣህና መዓትህ ከከተማህ ከኢየሩሳሌም ከቅዱስ ተራራህ እንዲመለስ እለምንሃለሁ።
¹⁷ አሁንም፥ አምላካችን ሆይ፥ የባሪያህን ጸሎትና ልመናውን ስማ፤ ጌታ ሆይ፥ በፈረሰው በመቅደስህ ላይ ስለ አንተ ስትል ፊትህን አብራ።
¹⁸ አምላኬ ሆይ፥ በፊትህ የምንለምን ስለ ብዙ ምሕረትህ ነው እንጂ ስለ ጽድቃችን አይደለምና ጆሮህን አዘንብለህ ስማ፤ ዓይንህን ገልጠህ ጥፋታችንና ስምህ የተጠራባትን ከተማ ተመልከት።
¹⁹ አቤቱ፥ ስማ፤ አቤቱ፥ ይቅር በል፤ አቤቱ፥ አድምጥና አድርግ፤ አምላኬ ሆይ፥ ስምህ በከተማህና በሕዝብህ ላይ ተጠርቶአልና ስለ ራስህ አትዘግይ።
“አሁንም፦ ዛሬ ወይም ነገ ወደዚህ ከተማ እንሄዳለን በዚያም ዓመት እንኖራለን እንነግድማለን እናተርፍማለን የምትሉ እናንተ፥ ተመልከቱ፥ ነገ የሚሆነውን አታውቁምና።”

Jesus has warned us in advance: “No one can serve two masters.
Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to
the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money”
(Matthew 6:24). He urges us to think carefully and seriously about the
exchange we make when we trade in the treasures that are ours in following
him and his Word for the tinsel that the world has to offer. In
Mark 8 he puts it most succinctly: “What good is it for a man to gain
the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in
exchange for his soul?” (vv. 36,37).
Let us say, for the sake of argument, that it was possible to gain the
whole world, all of its wealth and health, all of its wisdom and fame
and popularity. Eventually, with the passing of time, each of them
would fade away and disappear. When sickness comes or when one is
all alone or in the hour of death and on the day of judgment, what does
such a one have? How will he rescue himself from sickness and loneliness,
from death and judgment? All the world’s wealth and wisdom
cannot save him. Of course, even the wealthiest, most popular, most
healthy, or most wise never get the whole world; they forfeit their souls
for much less than the whole world. If it’s a fool’s bargain to trade in
the treasure of Christ and all that he is for us in the gospel for the
whole world, how much more of a fool’s bargain is it to settle for the
baubles and the tinsel that would be ours on our best day apart from
Christ? For baubles and tinsel are the best we can hope for in the
exchange; such trinkets are a long way from the whole world that even
a fool must know can never be his
The world seems so impressive, so really smart to them, and the
gospel just too old-fashioned, too simple. How many, whether young or
old, at some point in life stop looking at the cross because other sights
seem for a moment more appealing? So seductive is the lure of pleasure or of worldly success or wisdom, so rich the promises of happiness
or fulfillment if we just cast the Word of God aside and with it duty,
honor, reverence, and obedience!
Following faithless friends, so many turn their backs on the purity
given in the gospel and called for in the Christian life. After a busy
Saturday night with the world, they are just too tired—or perhaps
feeling too ashamed—to spend time with Jesus on Sunday morning.

Faith listens to the Word of God.
Faith despairs of its own merits. Faith trusts alone the promise of God
to forgive out of grace and on account of the work of Christ.

by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus”
