Moral Stories

Rose for Mother

A man stopped at a flower shop to order some flowers to be wired to his mother who lived two hundred miles away. As he got out of his car he noticed a young girl sitting on the curb sobbing. He asked her what was wrong and she replied, “I wanted to buy a red rose for my mother. But I only have seventy-five cents, and a rose costs two dollars.”

The man smiled and said, “Come on in with me. I’ll buy you a rose.” He bought the little girl her rose and ordered his own mother’s flowers. As they were leaving he offered the girl a ride home. She said, “Yes, please! You can take me to my mother.” She directed him to a cemetery, where she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave.

The man returned to the flower shop, canceled the wire order, picked up a bouquet and drove the two hundred miles to his mother’s house.

Moral: Life is Short.  Spend much time as you can loving and caring people who love you.  Enjoy each moment with them before it’s too late.  There is nothing important than family.

🌸🌸🌸Connect the dots🌸🌸🌸
“One good analogy is worth three hours of discussion” Dudley Malone
An analogy suggests something similar between two different things. For example, a toe is to a foot, as a finger is to a hand.

Analogies are powerful for problem-solving because it broadens our thinking. These comparisons help us see connections that we might otherwise miss.

Leonardi Davinci was famous for this. He studied how water moved in rivers to better understand how blood flows through our veins. He dissected humans to understand how layers of muscle, tissue, and tendons work inside our body. This knowledge allowed him to paint details that no other painter considered at the time.🌹🌹🌹😀

🌱🌱🌱Avoid negative thinking🌱🌱🌱
“If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?” Shantideva
I’ve never been able to solve a hard problem when I start with negative thoughts. If I say to myself “there is no solution,” I’ll never find one. If I say “this won’t work,” I’ll never pursue that angle. If I say to myself “I’m out of ideas,” I won’t come up with any new ones.

Negative thinking will defeat any problem solver before they even begin. It’s a waste of energy and time.

Part of the reason negativity creeps in is our fear of failure. Here’s the thing, failing to solve the problem is a failure. In my mind it’s always better to try to resolve the issue and fail, than never try at all.

Sure the solution may not work. If it fails, I’m still in a better place. I learned something new, and I can apply my knowledge to the next big problem I face. If it works, I continue to build my reputation of being the “go-to-guy” for big issues. I win either way.🌹🌹🌹

🌱🌱🌱Life lessons on problem solving🌱🌱🌱

Life is like a game of chess. There is an infinite number of ways to play. It’s possible to become a master but still, have room to grow. At the core, the game is about problem-solving. To be great at chess one needs to see patterns, think ahead, use logic, be creative, fail, and learn. Every move in the game is a chance to solve a problem.

This is what life feels like to me. There are thousands of moves and problems around every corner. Some are small while others seem insurmountable. I’m not in control of the issues that come my way, but I can control my response.

Often life’s problems seem overwhelming. It’s like the beginning of a chess game. There are only 32 pieces on the board, but there are over 300 Billion ways to play them in the first four moves.

When I started playing chess, I had no idea what I was doing. I struggled with every move, even the first one. Over time I began to learn a few strategies and see patterns of my own. These helped me become a better and faster player. What used to be a problem that took a few minutes to solve, now took seconds.

Problem-solving, like chess, is a skill. It’s something I can get better at over time. Every time I tackle a new problem I am improving my ability to solve one down the road.

Don’t think for a second I got it right all the time. Sure, I’ve tackled some hairy problems in my life and even came up with some good solutions. But, I always learned more from my screw ups.

I could look back and ask myself “why didn’t that work?” Did I think through all the information or were my assumptions wrong? Finding mistakes is one of the best ways I’ve found to improve my problem-solving skills.

Problems are like mutants in a fantasy movie. They always seem to evolve and get more powerful. The patterns used against a problem yesterday may not work today. After getting good at solving one type, new issues come around the bend to test every skill we have.

The only answer is to get better.🌹🌹🌹

By working at the same time each day, Franklin trained himself to be ready to work during those hours. Whenever he had a day that was free of distractions and unexpected interruptions, he would be able to work as productively as possible.

But there’s one more element of Franklin’s schedule that makes it quite unique.

How Benjamin Franklin Took His Schedule to the Next Level
First thing each morning, Franklin decided on his goals for the day and determined what his most pressing priorities were.

At the top of the schedule, he printed:

“Morning Question, What good shall I do this day?”
Before he went to sleep at night, he would look over his list, examine his day, and ask,

“What good have I done today?”
This simple practice of evaluating his day every morning and evening helped Franklin put everything into perspective.

Even if he hadn’t accomplished everything that he wanted to, he was able to spend time celebrating his victories. He could also reevaluate his schedule and see what things he needed to keep working on.

Essentially, it was a way for him to measure his progress. If his method for achieving a goal wasn’t working, he could tweak it and attempt a different approach.

How to Make A Daily Schedule That Will Help You Reach Your Goals
First, you need to plan out your goals and upcoming projects. Consider whether a goal is too vague or if you have a clear idea of what success will look like. Make sure you write down your goal in the most specific terms as possible.

Next, break your long-term goal down into smaller short-term goals. This will allow you to easily measure your progress so you can celebrate weekly and monthly victories. Plan out what you should realistically be able to accomplish by the next month or even in the next few days.

You can make your short-term goals even more specific by setting deadlines. Give yourself a clear target to work towards.

Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to put together your schedule. Analyze how you can divide up your day so you’re working productively and taking advantage of the hours that are available to you.

In today’s Internet age, there are many fantastic apps that make it incredibly easy to create a daily schedule.

Currently, I write up mine on Evernote. Every night, I look over my schedule and tweak it depending on whether I have any appointments or other events that might interfere with my usual writing routine.

Todoist is another excellent app for writing up a daily schedule. I have recently signed-up for an account there and plan to start using it in addition to Evernote.

The Todoist app lets you create to-do lists with recurring dates and times. This is perfect for customizing a daily schedule. For example, you can schedule “writing every day at 8am” or you can create tasks that only recur on specific days, e.g., “research every Friday”. This allows you to create a custom schedule for every single day.

Take Time to Review Your Progress
Of course, it’s also important to review our schedules every morning and evening like Benjamin Franklin did. I’ve even taken this one step further.

Not only do I review my schedule every morning and evening, but also on the first of every month I write up an entry in my journal outlining the short-term goals for the month. I use an app called Day One that has a simple and elegant interface.

At the end of the month, I review these goals and evaluate my progress. I can see whether my goals were realistic, whether I met them successfully, and what I need to work on in the next month.

Ultimately, by monitoring your progress as often as you can, you help keep the momentum alive. Your brain is thinking about your goals constantly and becomes excited about achieving them. This helps you establish a daily habit of working towards them.

The Takeaway
Benjamin Franklin once observed,

“Lost time is never found again.”
By implementing a daily schedule like Franklin’s, you are able to evaluate whether you are using your time effectively, and you help guard yourself against slipping into the quagmire of procrastination.

There are only a few days left of 2017, and you’re probably beginning to plan out your goals for the new year.

But let’s face it. It’s easy to set resolutions and draw up a list of goals, but it’s much more difficult putting in the hard work to achieve them.

At first, you might make significant progress towards your goals, but as the weeks pass, your schedule seems to become busier than you expected, your motivation begins to ebb, and those goals begin to look further and further out of reach.

How do you maintain that original interest and energy that motivated you during those initial stages? How do you ensure that you are working productively each day?

Here’s Benjamin Franklin’s solution to this problem.

Benjamin Franklin’s Method to Success
Benjamin Franklin was a master of the art of productivity. As a polymath, he wore many different hats during his lifetime: author, printer, entrepreneur, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, inventor, and diplomat to name a few.

What was his secret to becoming so successful?

Undoubtedly, a lot of it was down to his own hard work and determination.

In his autobiography, however, he shares a technique that helped him stay focused on his goals: a daily schedule.

Below is a copy of this schedule from his autobiography.

Stay focused. We often get sidetracked because we are worrying too much about whose watching, what they are thinking and what's being said. Who cares.. Opinions are not results! People can assume all they want but they will never be able to predict your next winning move. Only you can determine that!

Yes, some may see you fall. Yes some may see you make a myriad of mistakes. But your lessons learned will be your wisdom earned. That gives you the confidence and mental fortitude to keep trying and giving it your best. They will wonder how you did it! Well let them wonder. They will wonder about many of the wonderful things you are about to do. But you must be ACTIVE! Be that powerful, optimistic individual who makes things happen because you are determined to out last your challenges. Believe the Champion in You! -Adrian Starks

🍃🍃🍃You have more spare time than you think🍃🍃🍃
People keep asking me where I find the time to write. In actual fact, I use the time that others waste. I wake up early on a Saturday and blog for a few hours, then I do the same on Sunday. Meanwhile, my friends are just waking up as I’ve finished working away on my blogging dream.

During the week, I wake up early again to edit, find feature images, check grammar and format my blog posts. Again, by the time everyone else wakes up I’ve already finished working on my dream for the day.

To find these extra hours I had to do the following:

– Go to bed earlier
– Not reply to constant social media messages
– Eat energy enriching foods
– Give up TV
– Give up coffee
– Time block phone calls

To gain more time I essentially reduced non-dream producing activities. If I was engaging in something like TV that had no net benefit, then I gave it up.

“Sacrifice is the antidote to time-wasting”
The hours you need to be successful and achieve your dream are there. If you add up all the time you spend doing useless nonsense, you’ll find that you have more hours that you can fill with your dream producing tasks.🌹🌹🌹

🌱🌱🌱Action is all that matters🌱🌱🌱😀😀

You can read as many blogs like this as you want and you can surround yourself with rah rah rah positivity. None of this will help your success. What will help your success the most is taking action on the knowledge you learn from all the different references in your life.

When I say action, though, I mean immediate action, not delayed action. Delayed action is often too late, and it gives us an excuse for when we fail. Fear is what get’s in the way of taking immediate action which is why you have to learn to tango with these scary moments.

I get asked all the time whether entrepreneurs should ask for non-disclosure agreements when talking about their business ideas. I tell them the cold hard truth; an idea means nothing what so ever. The value in an idea is only revealed when action is taken.

I’m sure we all had the idea for Uber in the back of our minds somewhere. Only two intelligent folks decided to put in the effort and take action on a tough business.

Are you going to take action or let someone else experience your success instead while you sit back and continue gaining useless knowledge?

🌱🌱🌱Embrace the negative🌱🌱🌱
There are probably over a billion things that could go wrong for you every day and produce a negative experience for you. If you don’t learn to embrace the negative, then you are going to be choosing to be unhappy a heck of a lot, and that is 100% your fault buddy.

Reframe your brain to understand that negative experiences stop you from going down a path that is not truly in line with your goals and dreams.

“Negative experiences are destiny’s way of moving away the boulders that lie in front of you and helping focus your mind”
Because of evolution, our brains are supposed to notice more of the negative than anything else so that it can protect us from ancient predators who died millions of years ago. The negative in your life doesn’t really exist because you are the one that is labeling these experiences in such a way.

Use a different language when you label a thought, and you will experience something totally new. Think to yourself, “Isn’t it great that it’s raining today. Now I get to stay inside and read a book or call my friends.”

🌱🌱🌱Be Socratic🌱🌱🌱
“Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.” Voltaire
I’ve always said that engineering taught me one thing, how to solve problems. I can see now how this is only partially true. While I learned a lot about analytical thinking, there were some big gaps. For example, I never learned Socratic questioning.

Looking back, I can only imagine the solutions I would have discovered if I had this skill. Socratic questioning fuels critical thinking.

R.W. Paul describes six types of questions. Regardless of the problem, these questions can help me come up with better solutions.

🌹Get clear about the situation: Ask, why do you say that or how does this relate to our discussion
🌹Test assumptions to find facts: Ask, what could we assume instead? How can you verify or disapprove an assumption?
🌹Find examples of truth: Ask, what would be an example? What is this like? What do you think causes that to happen?
🌹Look at the problem from a different angle: Ask, what would be an alternative? What is another way to look at it? Can you explain why it is necessary or beneficial, and who benefits?
🌹Think about the results of actions: Ask, What are the consequences of that assumption? What are you implying? How does X affect Y?
🌹Question the question: What was the point of this question? What does X mean?

🌱🌱🌱Find solutions, not problems🌱🌱🌱
“Complaining about a problem without proposing a solution is called whining.” Teddy Roosevelt
When I was young, I was quick to bring my issues to my family, teachers or friends. Why go through the work of solving them if someone else will step in and help out?

The problem with this early approach is that nine times out of ten I could have solved the problem myself. Every time someone did the work for me, I missed a chance to learn.

As I got older, I realized I had to work as hard at solving problems as I did on finding them. The more I did that, the more I realized how much joy I got from cracking the code on some tough ones.

In my professional life, I’ve been an intern, a CEO and everything between the two. With each move up the corporate ladder, there were fewer and fewer people to solve the hard problems.

Few issues start in the CEO’s office, but a lot end up there. The reason is simple. Someone in the company couldn’t figure out a solution. This happens at every level of an organization. Tons of problems end up in a manager’s lap because the team couldn’t solve them.

In any company, there are two types of employees. They are either problem finders or problem solvers. This second group goes by a lot of other names, fixers, resourceful, go-to-person or troubleshooter. The second group only has one name, whiners.

Problems are easy to come up, solutions are hard. I’ve found that it’s almost impossible to find a solution when I fixate on the issue. The mind can only focus on one or the other.

In life, those that find problems and offer solutions always seem to win. These people get more responsibility, opportunities and pay.

The best way I know to do this is to accept the problem and then start to focus on solutions. There is an answer somewhere, and the sooner I start looking for it, the sooner I can find it.🌹🌹🌹🌹

Drawing up a schedule like Franklin’s is a fantastic way to evaluate your day and figure out how you can take advantage of every available hour.

At first glance, Franklin’s schedule seems quite rigorous.

He woke at five in the morning and immediately began planning his day. By eight o’ clock he was busy at work on his different projects. He’d work for about four hours straight before allowing himself a pause for lunch or leisure time.

However, Franklin did admit the difficulties of following such a tight schedule. Sometimes his days didn’t always go as planned. He wrote,

“I found that, tho’ it might be practicable where a man’s business was such as to leave him the disposition of his time, that of a journeyman printer, for instance, it was not possible to be exactly observed by a master, who must mix with the world, and often receive people of business at their own hours.”
Obviously, it is important to be realistic when creating such a schedule for yourself. Often you will probably be unable to follow it to the letter. However, by having such a schedule in place, it will be much easier to develop daily habits, like a daily writing routine.

🎯👆Negativity & positivity are a matter of what you talk yourself in or out of.

Let's focus in on the word "talk" for a moment, in the reference to "internal dialogue".

The duration and repetition by which you carry on a negative or positive conversation in your head drastically impacts what you see manifest in your life.

If you think and ponder negativity, you can not possibly expect to squeeze an ounce of positivity out of what produces such putrid fruit.

However, the key is in the coaching. The bad news is that you've coached yourself into thinking negative, but the good news is that you can coach yourself right back out of that and into thinking positive.

You have EVERY ability AND responsibility to control your internal dialogue.

If you're tired of being depressed, worried, and drenched with anxiety, you have to become that much MORE sick of negative thinking.

Coach yourself out of Negativity!

Just as in a conversation it’s a good idea to listen more than you talk, it is also wise in relationships to think about the well-being of others more than you think about your own wishes and desires. When you constantly strive to treat others in the same way you would like them to treat you, you become a person whom others like to be around, one who commands their respect, confidence, and loyalty. When you learn to manage emotions and your ego, and when you learn to always consider the needs and desires of others, it is inevitable that you will “bait your hook” with kindness and consideration, and catch more friends than you can count

Lesson Learned

One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live.  They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?”

“It was great, Dad.”

“Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked.

“Oh yeah,” said the son.

“So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father.

The son answered: “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.

“We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.

“We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs.

“We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.”

The boy’s father was speechless.

Then his son added, “Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.”

🍃🍃🍃Time wasters are everywhere🍃🍃🍃
One day, I sat at work and added up all the unannounced conversations that people had with me where they weren’t invited. These conversations happen because I’ve noticed people are bored or unfulfilled. When you’re in this state, it’s easier to go and distract someone else with useless talk about reality TV shows, than it is to work at something that you don’t love.

At the end of one workday that went for eight hours, I counted at least three hours of useless conversations where people walked over and interrupted me.Now you’re probably thinking I’m some anti-social a$$, but I promise you I’m not.

What I am is someone that likes to get stuff done and save the small talk for social occasions where I’m letting my hair down. A lot of small talk is often in the form of complaints. These complaints exist because someone, somewhere, has violated someone else’s rule about how the game of life is played.

Drop the rules, avoid the small talk and don’t allow yourself to be distracted easily. You’ll find you gain at least another three hours in your day.

🍃🍃🍃Time is really all you have🍃🍃🍃
I was on a podcast the other week called “Success Talks.” I do podcast interviews all the time so I can give back and share some of what I’ve learned. At the end of the interview, I normally like to chat with the host and find out their why.

At the end of this particular podcast, I asked the host what he did for a living and he told me he had a bunch of childcare centers and a large workforce of photographers. “Okay cool, obviously a high-roller,” I thought to myself quietly.

He then explained to me that in 2015 he had a stroke and realized that while he was earning a lot of money that he could leave behind for his family, what he really wanted was to leave a legacy. Instantly, the hairs on the back of my neck stood tall.

This friendly podcast host had decided to stop spending time making money and spend his time leaving a legacy that can add value to people’s lives. He realized that in the end, all we have is time. How we use our time is up to us.He’d decided that he would no longer follow society rules for success.

This champion decided that it was time to start a podcast, mastermind, online course, and to attend all the events that exist out there to lift people up and teaching them something.

“It took a stroke for him to realize that life is precious and we have to think very carefully about our purpose”
Don’t let a stroke or major health problem be the catalyst for you to stop wasting time. For me, I let a near miss with cancer have this same effect and if I had my time again I would have acknowledged the importance of time sooner.

🍃🍃🍃So what are you going to do?🍃🍃🍃
I don’t spend my limited time on this planet writing this advice for you so you can waste it like the toilet paper in a public toilet. This stuff is serious to me and I genuinely want you to gain results. If nothing else, at the end of reading this article I want you to make a decision.

That decision involves writing a list of all the things you do each week that are unrelated to your dream or have no joy and fulfillment. Once you have your list, I want you to time each activity. Now I’m not some moron that believes that everything you ever do has to form part of your dream.

Obviously, you have housework, family, etc, that you need to take care of. The purpose of this exercise is to find the things like social media, TV, complaining with work colleagues, and so on, and either cut it out or limit it. This will give you the time you need to divert time back into your dream.

By doing this, I believe you can be even more successful and create a legacy. Time is your best friend if you know how to use it.🌹🌹🌹👍🏻🌹🌹🌹

🌱🌱🌱You’re Wasting Your Spare Time And It’s Killing Your Success🌱🌱🌱
🌹🌹Time, for me, is like ice cream for a five-year-old.🌹🌹 🌹🌹 I treat time like I treat a beautiful woman — with respect. This sweetheart called time is a scarceresource that we’re all taking for granted. We piss our time up against the wall like it’s nothing.

We treat our time like it’s an overflowing beer on a Saturday night that we piss out after we’ve numbed the pain or our failure and lack of action.

It’s time to take back our time. It’s time to take back what is rightfully ours and move forward with momentum and optimism. YOU ARE LITERALLY KILLING YOURSELF AND YOUR DREAM BY WASTING TIME! Make a stand! Wage war with time!

🍃🍃🍃Your dream is won or lost in your spare time🍃🍃🍃
Your goal above all else should be to do the following:

1. Get shelter
2. Find love
3. Help others
4. Achieve your dream

These four things are the basic requirements for you to truly live. You can’t avoid them and without one of them, you’ll be massively handicapped in your pursuit for meaning. The hardest part about being successful is trying to achieve your dream.

That’s because achieving your dream takes a hell of a lot of time. Your dream is not just something you can whip up in a few minutes like a packet of two-minute noodles. To achieve your life’s purpose and be successful, you have to dedicate time to it.

It annoys the crap out of me how many people I meet who want to conquer some giant feat, but then put zero time into it. We are all chasing this overnight success that doesn’t exist. Your spare time my friends is where your dreams and goals come true.

I’ve studied all the great’s of our time and they all seem to be mediocre on the surface. The difference is that these tycoons of their field spent an unreasonable amount of time chipping away at all the goals required to achieve their dream.

They weren’t, during the middle of the freaking week, having a few beers at 11 pm at night. These champions were probably up late at night working on their dream or rising early, but they certainly weren’t wasting a single ounce of time.

Nothing that is worth achieving can be done in a short space of time.Achievements that are remembered decades later take time. We all have the same amount of hours in a day. What we’re missing is that when we get home from work / running a business, we waste the time between the late afternoon and before we go to bed.

Then we wake up in the morning and waste the most productive hours of the day tucked up in bed or having a long and unnecessary breakfast for the sake of wasting time. The last thing on your mind should be any task that doesn’t link to your dream and ultimately your success.

🌱🌱🌱Don’t follow others🌱🌱🌱

It’s so easy to lack passion and follow other people instead. Stop becoming a follower and start becoming a leader.

Program your brain with the idea that you are highly valuable to others and you can absorb knowledge and take action better than anyone.

Coach others without even being asked to and always look for a way to help out. Learn to think on your own and draw your own opinions out of a situation. Rather than being fed by someone else’s opinion, take control, and make your own decisions.🌹🌹🌹😀

🌱🌱🌱10 Ways To Make Your Day More Meaningful🌱🌱🌱
🌹Wake up early. Enjoy the sunrise. Enjoy the quiet, slow pace of the early morning. Use this time to meditate, pray, reflect, write, exercise, etc.
🌹Prioritize. Remember to do the most important things to you and yourfamily. Don’t get bogged down with all of the things that call for your immediate attention.
🌹Read books that answer your deepest questions.
🌹Eat your food more slowly and actually enjoy it instead of just treating it like fuel. Don’t watch the news and play with your phone while eating. Just eat.
🌹Go for a walk and enjoy nature. Sit in a park and listen to the birds. Go to the beach and listen to the waves crashing against the shore.
🌹Watch something funny. Not just something mildly funny, like the average sitcom. But your favorite episode of your favorite comedy, your favorite late night comedy sketch, or something else that will make you laugh until your eyes water.
🌹Begin a project or hobby you’ve been wanting to start, but have been putting off. Take the first step.
🌹Spend time with the people most important to you, not just the activities most important to you.
🌹Do one thing at a time. Whatever is most important to do right now, do it. Let everything else wait. Don’t even think about the next thing. 🌹Multi-tasking gets things done, but not done as well, and not done as meaningfully.
🌹Help others. And be mindful of the good you have done for others and the good you will continue to do, in your work and in your personal life.😀😀😀
