EvolutionaryScale Raises $142M for Protein-Generating AI
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/70e0f03c-d8d6-4a4e-84e1-a998276683dc.jpg
A new startup, EvolutionaryScale, has secured a massive $142 million investment to develop AI models that can generate novel proteins for scientific research.
The company, founded by former Meta researchers, has created an AI model called ESM3, which can design proteins for use in drug discovery and materials science. EvolutionaryScale claims that ESM3 can "reason over" the sequence, structure, and function of proteins, enabling the model to generate new proteins.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/7a335739-ba9e-4a37-82bf-3ae5a898f8a9.jpg Image Credits: NicoElNino / Getty Images
The startup plans to make money through a combination of partnerships, usage fees, and revenue sharing. EvolutionaryScale might work with pharmaceutical companies to integrate ESM3 into their workflows, or revenue-share with researchers for breakthrough discoveries commercialized using ESM3.
To this end, EvolutionaryScale says that it will soon bring ESM3 and its derivatives to select AWS customers via the cloud provider's SageMaker AI dev platform, the Bedrock AI platform, and HealthOmics service. ESM3 will also be available to select customers using NVIDIA's NIM microservices, supported with an NVIDIA enterprise software license.
EvolutionaryScale says that both AWS and NVIDIA customers will be able to fine-tune ESM3 using their own data.
While it may take a decade for generative AI models to help design therapies, EvolutionaryScale is betting big on scaling up its model training to incorporate data beyond proteins and create a general-purpose AI model for biotech applications.
The company's big vision is to create AI models that can discover biological structure and function, enabling breakthroughs in fields like drug discovery and materials science.

Sift is Building a Better Platform for Analyzing Hardware Telemetry Data
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/c2ee4122-4429-48eb-a585-a4469777e0df.jpg
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/76197131-a6e3-4c51-a2ec-38c35671ddbf.jpg
Less than a year after closing its seed round, software-for-hardware startup Sift announced a $17.5 million Series A led by Google’s venture capital arm GV to scale their platform for analyzing real-time data from hardware systems.
The company is developing a platform that provides a single source of truth for telemetry data. Such data is essential for engineers to understand a machine’s performance; even tiny anomalies, if missed, can spiral into catastrophe. One timely example Sift provides is the uncrewed Starliner test mission in 2019, which experienced a software error that sent the spacecraft into the wrong orbit entirely and led to further delays and mounting expenses in the spacecraft program.
Such errors could be avoided with a more comprehensive, yet simplified, software stack for telemetry data. Sift suggests that its platform offers nothing less than a new paradigm: a single platform that unifies hardware sensor data ingestion, storage, and review.
Automation is one of Sift’s biggest differentiators. In the past, a customer may have manually run tests and checked dashboards to ensure hardware health, but with Sift, they can encode “rules” into the platform instead. Sift evaluates those rules against simulations, tests, and operations, and only flags an engineer for data review when it discovers an anomaly.
“Dashboards are fundamentally the wrong solution for in-depth data analysis because there is too much noise for a human to find the signal,” Sift co-founders Austin Spiegel and Karthik Gollapudi explained.
Over the next twelve months, Sift is aiming to boost every part of the software stack with artificial intelligence, from more robust anomaly detection to data review. The company is also looking to further automate parts of the compliance and regulatory review process, as these certification workflows will help engineers communicate their readiness to regulators and cut through red tape faster.
The company already has a list of customers, including many well-known space and hardware startups, like K2 Space, Astranis, and True Anomaly. Spiegel and Gollapudi, two ex-SpaceX engineers, said that “a startup’s need for speed, flexibility, and competitive advantage drives it to adopt new tech quickly, such as Sift.”
“Building internal tools requires a dedicated headcount to create, manage, and maintain and takes years,” they added. “Startups are focused on building their business as fast as possible, so building internal tools — something they may be able to do — is not a priority. Engineering hires and priorities are focused on their product. Hiring engineers with domain expertise to build a highly scalable data storage and analytics solution is challenging.”
Sift currently has 16 full-time employees and expects to more than double that number over the next 12 months.

k-ID Secures $45M to Simplify Child Safety Compliance for Game Developers
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/e5a5a2c4-cb89-49a1-b600-d79131558674.jpg
For independent game developers, ensuring compliance with regulations is often an afterthought, overshadowed by the need to complete coding, design, and testing. However, compliance is not optional, especially when it comes to child safety, and the task is becoming increasingly complex as regulations evolve rapidly worldwide.
A startup called k-ID aims to streamline this compliance journey, and it has just raised $45 million in a Series A round to develop its platform that makes it easy for game developers to comply with child safety and data privacy regulations.
The funding round was led by Andreessen Horowitz, an existing investor, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Okta, Z Venture Capital, and existing backers Konvoy Ventures and TIRTA Ventures also participated in the round, bringing the company's total funding to $51 million.
"The challenge our technology solves – what can be done with a child once they arrive in an online world – is currently solved by lawyers and engineers manually," said k-ID's CEO and co-founder, Kieran Donovan. Donovan previously worked as a partner at law firm Latham & Watkins, where he advised tech and gaming companies for over a decade. "A huge part of that over the last few years has been supporting game publishers to build youth experience and family tools that navigate the regulatory complexity."
The fundraise comes at a critical time for the gaming industry, as more young people play online games, and developers and publishers must cater to a global audience, ensuring their games comply with regional laws.
k-ID's solution allows game developers and publishers to access its platform via APIs or, for mobile, an SDK. The platform connects to the game and helps developers quickly customize it to meet the compliance requirements of each market.
Donovan explained that k-ID's software offers single sign-on for kids, enabling a child's guardian to scan a QR code and unlock features within a game that require parental approval. It can also automatically customize which facets of a game a child can access, in line with local regulations and cultural nuances. "For parents, it's one unified console to manage and engage with all of their child's gaming," Donovan said. There's also an option that lets guardians approve or deny access to any AI content or tools that a child may come across within a game.
In addition to the Series A, k-ID also announced a partnership with ESRB for its Privacy Certified program, which will give the startup's customers a way to obtain the ESRB Privacy Certified Kids Seal.
"Today, there's probably no space more complex than the regulation that applies to kids and teens online. Whether it's chat, algorithms, content, loot boxes, or even the definition of a child (which can be as young as under seven or as old as under 21, depending on the country), there's so much to navigate," Donovan said.

Coder Secures New Funding to Move Dev Environments to the Cloud
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/5069291b-0b3c-44c7-b155-b3c34f77bbfa.jpg
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/4628dece-2b94-41ef-9aab-fb26845284bd.jpg
Developers often rely on local environments, such as their laptops, to write, build, and test code before shipping it to a cloud service for integration and deployment. While this approach is common, it can introduce challenges like conflicts between dev environments and, in the worst-case scenario, security exploits.
Cloud development environments (CDEs) have gained popularity in recent years as a solution to these issues. According to Gartner, by 2026, 60% of cloud workloads will be built and deployed using CDEs.
Coder, a vendor that provides preconfigured, cloud-based development environments for enterprise use cases, has announced that it has closed a $35 million funding round, an extension to its Series B. The funding round was led by Georgian, with participation from Uncork Capital, Notable Capital, and Redpoint Ventures.
Coder's co-founders, Ammar Bandukwala, Kyle Carberry, and John Andrew Entwistle, met online while in high school and created an open-source tool to develop software remotely via a browser, leveraging Microsoft's Visual Studio Code IDE.
"For Coder, the broader slowdown in tech has been an accelerant," said Rob Whiteley, Coder's CEO. "Companies have been forced to look inward with a 'do more with less' mantra, seeking to understand how to retain their best talent and operate more efficiently without sacrificing velocity and security."
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/0be1adc2-3ac2-4cff-91fe-1a583d4bf303.jpg
Coder offers free, open-source software for platform and dev teams to migrate dev environments and source code from local machines to cloud infrastructure. The software is self-hosted and self-managed, working across multiple clouds, and delivering capabilities such as role-based access controls and end-to-end encryption.
Coder generates revenue by charging for Coder Workspace, a fully managed version of its open-source software with additional governance and user management features.
"Platform teams have complete control over where Coder is hosted and the services that Coder uses," Whiteley said. "By centralizing previously decentralized development environments, enterprises maintain better control and governance over their source code and IP."
The sales pitch appears to be resonating, with Coder's open-source software having around 1.2 million monthly active users. Dropbox, Discord, and Skydio are among the company's paying customers, as well as four unnamed U.S. intelligence agencies. Revenue doubled last year, and Whiteley expects it to double again in 2024, as Coder expands its client footprint in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
With nearly $80 million in the bank and a workforce of just over 50 people, the Austin, Texas-based company plans to grow globally, invest in its open-source tooling with a dedicated developer relations team, and expand its sales, marketing, support, and engineering organizations.

Boeing's Wisk Aero Acquires Verocel to Enhance Software Safety for Self-Flying eVTOL
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/f331c97a-7f3c-4b4f-8bdc-aba65608f159.jpg
Wisk Aero, a subsidiary of Boeing, has acquired Verocel, a software verification and validation company that has served the aerospace industry for 25 years. This acquisition aims to boost the software safety of Wisk Aero's self-flying electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
Wisk Aero has an autonomous-first approach to eVTOL aircraft, with its Generation 6 aircraft designed to be supervised by humans but not physically flown by them. This approach requires high-integrity software to ensure safe operation. The company's CEO, Brian Yutko, emphasized the importance of verifying and validating software to prevent failures that could have serious consequences.
The acquisition of Verocel brings in a team of about 60 experts with deep knowledge of DO-178C, a standard for developing safety-critical software for airborne systems. Verocel's expertise will help Wisk Aero certify its Gen 6 aircraft and support future software development at Boeing. The company's toolset, VeroTrace, will also aid in tracking and managing the life-cycle of software development and verification efforts.
The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. This acquisition is reminiscent of Joby Aviation's 2022 acquisition of Avionyx, an aerospace software engineering firm. Both acquisitions demonstrate the importance of vertical integration and expertise in software verification and validation for the development of safe and certified eVTOL aircraft.
Wisk Aero is working towards commercializing its self-flying eVTOLs by 2030. The company is already setting up infrastructure to operate air taxis, having partnered with Sugar Land to identify a location for vertiport infrastructure development. Additionally, Wisk Aero has established a memorandum of understanding with Houston Airports to explore locations for vertiport infrastructure serving the greater Houston area.

Tengo Simplifies Public Sector Procurement with AI
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/8f57bb3a-27e5-4ea7-ad2c-92e8a34d1075.jpg
Tengo, a software-as-a-service tool, uses artificial intelligence to find, evaluate, and respond to public tenders. The startup, founded last year, has raised a €3 million funding round led by Point Nine.
In France, the government spends half a billion euros every day, and Tengo aims to simplify the process of public tenders. The company's co-founder and CEO, Hugues Renou, explained that the government's spending includes roundabouts, school chairs, and training services.
Tengo's clients create a feed of public tenders by defining their criteria. The platform then scans all public portals to find new tenders that match those criteria. Public tenders are often extremely precise to avoid corruption or overspending, and companies usually end up reading through documents that can be up to 50 pages long.
One of Tengo's clients, OpenClassrooms, uses the platform to find training courses that are 100% online. Tengo identifies this element automatically, along with 40 other criteria. The platform uses AI to analyze the information contained in the documents, highlighting key aspects and referencing important pages.
Tengo also acts as a central repository for all things related to public tenders. Companies get an overview of all the applications that are currently in progress, and employees can add comments and share a tender with another team member. The platform also sends alerts when a tender is about to expire and gets renewed.
When it's time to submit an application, Tengo has built-in AI integrations to generate documents. This feature eliminates the need to switch to another service, making the process more efficient.
Eventually, Tengo hopes to enable multiple clients to collaborate and provide a joint application to a public tender. The government encourages SMEs to bid for public contracts, as they have a level of expertise that big companies don't, and it's a way to use public money to fund many more companies in the economy.

Google Brings Gemini AI to Gmail to Help with Email Writing and Summarization
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/edc52a68-d092-4aec-923a-c8e131a9a8c7.jpg
Google has introduced a new Gemini AI side panel in Gmail, designed to assist users with writing emails and summarizing email threads. The company is also integrating the Gemini side panel into Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. This launch comes shortly after Google announced these features last month at its I/O developer conference, which focused on new AI offerings.
With the new integration, users can utilize Gemini in Gmail to receive help with drafting emails or get suggested responses to an email. Additionally, users can ask questions and find specific information from emails within their inbox or from their Google Drive files.
Google notes that while Gemini in Gmail will provide prompts to help users get started with their queries, users can also ask their own questions. For instance, users can ask Gemini: "What was the PO number for my agency?" Or, they can ask: "How much did the company spend on the last marketing event."
These features are only available to Google Workspace customers with a Gemini Business or Enterprise add-on, a Gemini Education or Education Premium add-on, or a Google One AI Premium subscription.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/d9783622-5682-4a76-ab4d-7c1f99b52842.jpg
In Docs, the Gemini side panel can assist with writing and refining content, summarizing information, and brainstorming ideas. Users can also create content based on other files. In Slides, Gemini can help generate new slides and custom images, as well as summarize presentations.
The Gemini panel can also help track and organize data in Sheets. Plus, users can create tables, generate formulas, and get help with performing certain tasks. In Drive, the Gemini panel can summarize documents and provide quick facts about a project.
As with the Gemini panel in Gmail, users will need to be paid Gemini users to access the features in Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Drive.
Google is the latest tech giant to incorporate generative AI features into its popular, everyday apps and services. Earlier this year, Meta brought its AI chatbot to Instagram and WhatsApp, while Apple recently announced that it's bringing generative AI features to its apps and services, including Siri, Messages, Mail, and Notes.
The recent trend of integrating AI into everyday products may not be welcomed by everyone. While there was excitement around Apple's upcoming AI features, there was pushback when Meta added its AI chatbot to search on Instagram. Up until now, users who aren't interested in generative AI tools, like OpenAI's ChatGPT, have been able to avoid them for the most part. But as tech giants continue to add AI to their everyday apps and services, generative AI will be harder to avoid.

Payabli is Building Payment Management Tools for Software Startups
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/1b15c349-4e5d-4f79-9596-a3b22005ec69.jpg
Joseph Phillips and William Corbera, both with entrepreneurial backgrounds, have been friends for over a decade. They decided to team up to found Payabli, a payments-focused venture, in 2020. Payabli builds the infrastructure that allows companies, specifically software companies, to embed and facilitate payments through APIs.
"Payabli builds payment acceptance and issuance solutions and payment operations tools," Corbera explained. "We make software companies payments companies by giving them payment facilitating capabilities without the heavy lift, administrative burden, and exorbitant cost of becoming a payment facilitator."
Payabli is essentially trying to disrupt traditional payments facilitators like Stripe, Adyen, and Paytrix: companies that let customers accept electronic payments using their platforms. Payments facilitators act as middlemen between businesses and their banks, delivering the back end for payments processing.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/1af69ff0-9b3c-403a-bf74-33f48bf9ce6e.jpg
Payabli offers the standard array of "pay-in" payment acceptance tools, including tools to let a company's clients make recurring or scheduled payments or request invoices. But it also provides "pay-out" tools to help companies themselves pay vendors and suppliers, like virtual credit cards, physical checks, and bank integrations.
Payabli's services extend to various "payment operations" products, as well, including products designed to mitigate risk and fraud, handle disputes and compliance, and facilitate underwriting.
"Payments and other fintech programs are the lowest-hanging fruit for software companies to unlock new revenue and create stickier, more valuable customer relationships," Corbera said. "This is not only true for software companies, but any entity that coordinates money movement between payers and recipients."
Payabli's go-to-market approach has won approval from VCs, who've poured a substantial amount of capital into the startup. Payabli this week announced that it raised $20 million in a Series A funding round led by TTV Capital, Fika Ventures, and Bling Capital, bringing the company's total raised to $32 million at a "nine-figure" valuation.
Payabli has around 60 customers, Corbera said, adding that revenue grew 3x over the past 12 months to "seven figures."
"The new round of funding will be used to drive further product innovation, reinforce security and scalability, fuel new customer acquisition, and empower existing software partners to integrate and activate total processing volume easier and faster," Corbera said. "We had over 16 months of runway left when we raised, but we chose to raise opportunistically to further accelerate our growth and take on some large enterprise customers."
Payabli, based in Miami, has 49 employees and expects to have nearly 70 by the end of the year.

Gen Z Photos App Swipewipe Sells to French Publisher MWM in Its Largest Acquisition to Date
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/1fdbf373-cbbe-40b7-b25a-e4782cd3a52a.jpg
Swipewipe, a U.S.-based photo management app popular among Gen Z users, has been acquired by French mobile app publisher and developer MWM. The acquisition marks MWM's largest to date, and allows Swipewipe's founder, Adam O'Kane, to benefit financially from the deal while continuing to work on the app.
O'Kane, who developed the app, praised MWM for its support, saying that the company helped him achieve a "life-changing" exit without giving up control of the app's future success.
Swipewipe's journey to success was not overnight. O'Kane, who has been working on social apps since he was 17, created the app as a way to help users manage their iPhone's Camera Roll. The app gamifies the process of deleting unwanted photos, making it more engaging and fun for users.
The app initially struggled to gain traction, but after partnering with MWM, it began to see significant growth. MWM provided ad spend and monetization support, which helped Swipewipe reach over 5 million downloads and project over €10 million in revenue this year.
Swipewipe's success can be attributed to its unique approach to photo management. Unlike other apps, Swipewipe breaks down the process of cleaning up photos into manageable tasks, making it more appealing to users. The app's popularity among Gen Z users, who are known to regularly purge their Instagram accounts of photos, also contributed to its success.
O'Kane remembers a moment when he saw teens using his app at an amusement park, saying it felt like hearing his song on the radio for the first time. The app later went viral on TikTok, and Swipewipe and MWM followed up with paid campaigns.
Today, Swipewipe has over a million monthly active users, and O'Kane is excited to continue working on the app, saying that he sees it as just "scratching the surface" of what's possible.

Etched is Building an AI Chip that Only Runs One Type of Model
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/43d4229c-4d57-485d-8175-0ef91cf2afba.jpg
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/9e288788-06f2-4c1c-8a2b-21b8bb2250e6.jpg
As generative AI continues to permeate various industries, companies producing chips to run these models are reaping significant benefits. Nvidia, in particular, dominates the market, controlling an estimated 70% to 95% of the AI chip market. Cloud providers like Meta and Microsoft are spending billions of dollars on Nvidia GPUs, wary of falling behind in the generative AI race.
It's no surprise that generative AI vendors are unhappy with the status quo. A large portion of their success hinges on the whims of dominant chipmakers. As a result, they, along with venture capitalists, are on the hunt for promising upstarts to challenge the AI chip incumbents.
Etched is one of the many alternative chip companies vying for a seat at the table, but it's also one of the most intriguing. Founded by two Harvard dropouts, Gavin Uberti and Chris Zhu, along with Robert Wachen and former Cypress Semiconductor CTO Mark Ross, Etched aims to create a chip that can do one thing: run AI models.
That's not unusual. Many startups and tech giants are developing chips that exclusively run AI models, also known as inferencing chips. Meta has MTIA, Amazon has Graviton and Inferentia, and so on. But Etched's chips are unique in that they only run a single type of model: Transformers.
The transformer, proposed by a team of Google researchers in 2017, has become the dominant generative AI model architecture by far. Transformers underpin OpenAI's video-generating model Sora, text-generating models like Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini, and art generators such as the newest version of Stable Diffusion.
"In 2022, we made a bet that transformers would take over the world," Uberti, Etched's CEO, said in an interview. "We've hit a point in the evolution of AI where specialized chips that can perform better than general-purpose GPUs are inevitable — and the technical decision-makers of the world know this."
Etched's chip, called Sohu, is an ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) made for running transformers. Manufactured using TSMC's 4nm process, Sohu can deliver dramatically better inferencing performance than GPUs and other general-purpose AI chips while drawing less energy, claims Uberti.
"Sohu is an order of magnitude faster and cheaper than even Nvidia's next-generation Blackwell GB200 GPUs when running text, image, and video transformers," Uberti said. "One Sohu server replaces 160 H100 GPUs […]. Sohu will be a more affordable, efficient, and environmentally friendly option for business leaders that need specialized chips."
How does Sohu achieve all this? In a few ways, but the most obvious (and intuitive) is a streamlined inferencing hardware-and-software pipeline. Because Sohu doesn't run non-transformer models, the Etched team could do away with hardware components not relevant to transformers and trim the software overhead traditionally used for deploying and running non-transformers.

A graph from Etched comparing hardware performance running Meta's open model Llama 70B.
Etched is arriving on the scene at an inflection point in the race for generative AI infrastructure. Beyond cost concerns, the GPUs and other hardware components necessary to run models at scale today are dangerously power-hungry. Goldman Sachs predicts that AI is poised to drive a 160% increase in data center electricity demand by 2030, contributing to a significant uptick in greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers at UC Riverside, meanwhile, estimate that global AI usage could cause data centers to suck up 1.1 trillion to [...]

Foray Bioscience is Breaking Down Barriers in Plant-Based Biomanufacturing
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/b883ed60-b77a-4d95-ab04-0d02c3a55324.jpg
Ashley Beckwith, a researcher with a background in biology, materials, and manufacturing, has dedicated her career to developing medical solutions more efficiently. When she realized her expertise could be applied to plants and plant-based materials, an area in dire need of innovation, she decided to shift her focus.
"Life on earth is only as secure as our global plant populations, and currently, our plant populations are in crisis," Beckwith explained. "Nearly 40% of our plant species are threatened by extinction, and forest landscapes untouched by humans have shrunk by 12% in 2022. These plant resources are being squeezed on all fronts."
Beckwith leveraged her knowledge of biomanufacturing, the process of using microorganisms and cell cultures to produce biological molecules and materials on a commercial scale, to launch Foray Bioscience in February 2022. The company utilizes biomanufacturing to grow harvest-free plant-based materials, seeds, and molecules.
Biomanufacturing has been around for about 100 years, but it hasn't had many practical use cases for plants until now. Because each plant species is unique, there wasn't a one-size-fits-all approach to cultivate cells, making biomanufacturing with plant cell cultures laborious. Foray aims to change this through its database approach, providing predictive insights and experimental direction to speed up the research and development process for each plant species.
"At Foray, we are developing advanced tools for plant-less production to ask less of these resources and start to give back more," Beckwith said.
The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based startup raised a $3 million seed round led by ReGen Ventures, an Australian firm focused on backing technology that helps restore the planet's resources. Engine Ventures, Understorey Ventures, and Superorganism also participated in the round. The startup has now raised $3.875 million in total funding and plans to expand its team.
Beckwith mentioned that it took a while to fundraise the round because what the company is trying to do doesn't fit squarely into one category but rather at the intersection of many, from manufacturing to biology to conservation. This "odd ball" feeling is something Beckwith is used to running up against. She said that the reason she launched the company to begin with is that there wasn't a natural home for the research she was doing in plant biomanufacturing.
"I was in this weird cross-disciplinary bubble," Beckwith said. "That was really apparent to me when I got toward the end of my PhD. If this research was going to move forward and progress, I had to carry it forward into the next iteration of itself. Because of the newness of the field, there wasn't really a home for it in the academic setting or manufacturing setting. We had to make our own space."
She described taking the science out of the lab and launching the company as a "long journey." The startup currently works with other companies to help them set up their biomanufacturing by designing their clients' research and development roadmap and helping them develop commercialization strategies.
Beckwith also envisions creating a genetic banking system for plant seeds, especially those that aren't easy to document, and allowing new seeds to be grown from just a few cells. This will aid conservation efforts as well.
There are many parallels between Foray's tech and mission and the rise of lab-grown meat and seafood. While the science isn't exactly the same, Beckwith said, both have the same goal of replacing products and resources that humans are used to getting from nature with a lab-grown option that's less harmful to natural environments. While lab-grown meat is a little f[...]

How Jobright Uses AI to Help Foreign Workers Navigate the US Job Market
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/7b1f5432-222f-4b17-9025-63cbd9c411d4.jpg
Job searching can be overwhelming, especially for non-immigrants in the US. Not only do they have to compete with other candidates, but they also need to sift through numerous job postings to identify those that sponsor work visas. And if they lose their job, they only have 60 days to find another position before they have to leave the country.
The H-1B program, which randomly selects skilled foreigners to work in the US, is notoriously competitive. For the fiscal year of 2025, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) received nearly half a million entries, but only 18% of applicants will receive a visa.
A California-based startup called Jobright.ai wants to make job searching easier for foreign workers in the US. The company's co-founder, Eric Cheng, an immigrant himself, knows firsthand the struggles of foreign workers, so he decided to build an "H1-B filter" into Jobright. The feature, which is based on USCIS data of companies that have historically offered H1-B visa sponsorships, has become an instant hit among job seekers from India and China.
"This group has long been overlooked," Cheng said. To date, around 30% of Jobright's users are foreign workers. And thanks to its H-1B filter, Jobright has amassed 50,000 registered users since its launch in April, without spending on marketing.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Cheng traveled across China after selling his content collaboration SaaS company, where he met dozens of young people struggling to land jobs amid a global economic slowdown. Cheng ended up helping 10 of them secure jobs by asking about their skillsets and suggesting career options.
"They were talented, but their understanding of the job market was limited. They didn't know what jobs were out there and what they could possibly do," Cheng said. "What if they had a seasoned headhunter who knew them well and could recommend jobs that were beyond their knowledge? The arrival of ChatGPT gifted me the ability to build such a tool."
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/bc39d992-2fb7-4546-b725-b58d10b4e956.jpg Image credit: Jobright
Leveraging large language models, Jobright created an AI agent that acts as a headhunter tailored to individual job seekers. The AI interprets candidates' experience and recommends jobs that they might not have otherwise considered. It scores positions based on their compatibility with the candidates, a feature used by 60% of Jobright's users every day. It also helps users search for LinkedIn contacts who would likely offer them a job referral by identifying their alumni or former co-workers.
Despite competing in the crowded AI-powered job search market, Jobright thinks it has found a niche. While it shares some features — like using AI to write resumes and fill out applications — with more established players, its target users are different.
"Most of our users are mid- to senior-level professionals with at least a couple of years of work experience," Cheng said. "Their challenge is not applying for more jobs, but finding personalized job search strategies and opportunities that align with their career stage and professional strengths."

Backed by David Sacks, Garry Tan, and Walter Isaacson, Created by Humans Helps People License Their Creative Work to AI Models
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/1fed130a-98bb-4ed0-9cf2-7a9e384e329b.jpg
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/06228959-c2d9-4151-89de-10a752aa8f31.jpg
In 2024, it seems like no week goes by without a media organization, author group, or artist suing generative AI companies for using their work to train models without permission. The issue is, of course, that there's still no clear framework on what constitutes copyright violation in the context of training GenAI.
While these cases are bound to keep copyright lawyers busy, Created by Humans, a new company that emerged from stealth on Tuesday, aims to bypass expensive legal battles by offering a marketplace where creators can license their intellectual property directly to LLMs.
Created by Humans is the brainchild of Trip Adler, the former CEO of Scribd, a document-sharing service that morphed into a digital book and news subscription company.
Adler's grand vision has attracted $5 million in funding from a bevy of prominent investors. The round was led by David Sacks and Mike Maples, co-founder of Floodgate Fund. Other investors in the round included Jason Calacanis, Sam Lessin, and Garry Tan. Best-selling author Walter Isaacson also invested and joined the company as a creative advisor and inaugural author whose work AI companies can license.
Created by Humans aims to be a platform where creators of videos, images, music, and even medical data can sell licensing rights for AI training. But given Adler's experience and relationships in the publishing world, the startup is first launching with a service for authors and book publishers.
This isn't the only startup tackling the idea of matchmaking between content owners and LLM builders seeking training data. Another example is Human Native, founded by a former Google DeepMind engineer.
As for Created by Humans, it has so far built a product — a platform allowing authors to submit their work and AI companies to purchase specific elements with predefined usage rights. Yet, the exact details of its licensing agreement are still evolving. "We're trying to broker a three-way deal between authors, publishers, and the AI industry," Adler said. "It's complicated, but we're making great progress."
For now, Created by Humans is proposing a philosophy called the Fourth Law, a set of guiding principles for how AI companies can use and train on human-created content. Fourth Law, inspired by science fiction author Isaac Asimov's three laws of robots, states that humans should have the right to consent and control how AI uses their work and be compensated (if requested) and credited for their work (if a book is referenced in the output, there should be a link to buy it.)
"We want [the Fourth Law] to be the new standard for how deals work between AI companies and content owners," Adler said. "Authors and publishers can contribute their content and manage all their content according to the Fourth Law."
Adler expects authors to submit certain works to Created by Humans and specify how those works could be used by AI companies. Once the rights are purchased, Created by Humans would take a cut of the deal.
As an example, Walter Isaacson can choose the rights he wants to license from his books. "He can pick training rights, reference rights. He can license the style of his voice, his characters, and pick which AI company he wants to license to," Adler said. "And then Walter will get a dashboard that shows where his books are being used and how he's making money."
Created by Humans intends to establish a framework for a host of licensing rights from converting a book into a movie script to translating it into another language in real-time, Adler said. In fact, he envisions 'AI[...]

Smashing: A New App Curating the Best of the Web Using AI and Human Recommendations
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/08e13455-c3cd-4e76-8d34-8e4919dc41f8.jpg
Goodreads' co-founder, Otis Chandler, is back with a new app called Smashing, which aims to connect users with their interests by surfacing the internet's hidden gems. The app, currently in invite-only beta, uses a combination of AI and human recommendations to curate the best content from the web, including news articles, blog posts, social media posts, podcasts, and YouTube videos.
The launch of Smashing comes at a time when the media ecosystem is becoming increasingly fragmented, with journalists establishing their own newsletters and Substacks, and changes at Google and Meta resulting in a significant drop in traffic to online publishers. Chandler believes Smashing can address these problems by surfacing high-quality content and encouraging users to visit publishers' sites to read more.
Chandler's inspiration for Smashing came from his own experience trying to find good content online. During his sabbatical, he tried to train for a Half Ironman triathlon and found it difficult to find reliable and accurate information using traditional search engines. He tried various news aggregators, social media, and other apps, but was dissatisfied with the results. This led him to create Smashing, which he hopes will provide users with a better way to discover interesting and accurate content.
Smashing's iOS app allows users to follow their interests and submit their own content. The app uses AI-powered recommendations, which are then curated by a community of users who can vote up or down content. The app also provides summaries of news articles, key excerpts, and interesting pull quotes. Chandler believes that Smashing will drive traffic to online publishers, rather than replacing them.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/048e4412-df48-4dda-8f1b-075886587fcc.jpg
The app's design is reminiscent of Digg, a news aggregator from the Web 2.0 era. Users can vote up content they think is interesting, and the app will surface the best content based on user feedback. Chandler hopes that Smashing will become a community-driven platform that helps users discover new content and connect with others who share similar interests.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/84fcc010-0060-42a3-bd47-80a129d0e2b1.jpg
Smashing has raised a seed round and is currently in invite-only beta. Chandler hopes to expand the app's features and user base in the coming months.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/686919bc-1bd2-4f41-892b-81e76e94cfb9.jpg
Overall, Smashing aims to provide a better way for users to discover and engage with high-quality content online. By combining AI-powered recommendations with community feedback, Chandler hopes to create a platform that helps users find the best of the web.

Apple Launches iPhone Mirroring on Mac in Latest iOS and Mac Betas
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/f2e31922-0174-4cd9-a840-86a2c069af60.jpg
iPhone mirroring, a highly anticipated feature, is now available to developers testing the beta versions of iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. This feature allows users to mirror their iPhone directly on their Mac, enabling them to use their phone on their computer, including launching and running iPhone apps, and even moving files between the Mac and iPhone.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/a6768277-f483-4706-8d3b-5a32b0a221ac.jpg
First announced at the Developer Conference (WWDC) earlier in June, iPhone Mirroring makes it easier for consumers to use Mac apps and iPhone apps alongside one another. For example, a video clip edited with Final Cut Pro could be dropped into a template for further edits on the iPhone. In preparation for this interoperability, Apple released Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 and Final Cut Camera, along with updates for Final Cut Pro for Mac.
Another use case for iPhone Mirroring is the ability to use your iPhone apps without having to unlock your phone. With the mirroring feature, iPhone notifications are also displayed on the Mac desktop, allowing you to respond to incoming alerts in various apps. The iPhone's audio will also come through on the Mac, Apple said at WWDC.
Developers who often demo their apps to others over video calls or during live presentations will also be able to switch to their iPhones more easily.
When the iPhone is being mirrored on the Mac, the physical device remains locked, so there's no risk of someone accessing the phone without your permission, even if you left it in a bag across the room.
The feature also works with Standby mode, so you can see information at a glance when mirroring, Apple said.
Though public betas are still weeks away and the official launches of the new operating systems aren't due until later this fall, iPhone Mirroring is now available to developers testing the iOS 18 beta 2 and macOS Sequoia beta 2.
Consumers are warned from installing developer betas on their main device as they are often not stable and still fairly buggy. That appears to be true with the second beta, as well, as testers are reporting issues with battery life, phones heating up, and other crashes.

Patreon Introduces Gifting Feature and Other Creator Tools
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/c9bae6c1-4d80-4184-ab72-124b9a8f69f2.jpg
Patreon, a paid membership platform for creators, has announced the release of new features designed to help creators monetize their non-paying followers and tap into new revenue streams. This includes the ability to sell individual posts, a gifting feature for fans to gift limited-time subscriptions, and promotional tools for sharing clips on social media.
The new features reflect Patreon's ongoing efforts to expand beyond its role as a monetization platform. Last year, Patreon launched free membership options, enabling fans to follow their favorite influencers without having to commit to a monthly subscription. The company revealed that the move has already seen more than 30 million sign-ups.
Now, Patreon is introducing one-time purchases for content like posts and collections, so followers can access paywalled content without paying for a membership. The company previously allowed one-time purchases for various digital products, such as videos, podcast episodes, and images.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/1f389b0f-25f2-46f2-b89b-f7d7d1a86b31.jpg
The platform is also testing a gifting offering that lets fans give limited-time subscriptions to their friends, similar to gifting other subscription services like Netflix, Hulu, and MasterClass. For instance, users can send someone a one-month membership as a birthday present.
Additionally, Patreon is improving communication by opening up community chat sections to both free and paid members, as well as introducing features like a countdown clock and a live chat feature to promote new and upcoming content. There will also be a new tool for auto-generating audio and video clips of Patreon posts to use as teasers on social media platforms.
All of these new features will become available in the coming months, the company said.

https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/e4064035-fd39-4628-be7f-6ec3f33f8c3f.jpg
The B650 chipset is a more affordable option, making it suitable for budget-minded users who don't need the features of the X670 chipset. These boards still support AM5 socketed processors like the Ryzen 7000, but lack some of the extras offered by X670. Some key differences include:
* Support for PCIe 4.0 only, which is the previous generation of the PCIe standard.
* Limited connectivity options, with up to 4 SATA and 6 USB 10Gbps ports.
* Lower-end VRMs, making it more suitable for mid-range CPU options.
Best for: Budget builds with Ryzen 3 or 5.
What about X670E and B650E?
In addition to the standard X670 and B650, AMD has also released "Extreme" versions of each, abbreviated as "E." These E versions offer the same features but with a different allocation of PCIe Gen 4 and Gen 5 lanes.

Best Samsung Galaxy A54 Cases in 2023
The Samsung Galaxy A54 is one of the top Android smartphones in the mid-range category. As mentioned in our review, the A54 offers many improvements that make it a better choice than last year's Galaxy A53. However, while its capabilities and Gorilla Glass 5 front and back are remarkable, this smartphone is still prone to daily mishaps, such as accidental drops, scratches, cracks, and dents.
Adding the best screen protectors and cases to your device will not only raise its survivability but also help you retain its look and feel. Since there are many different options on the market, I've curated a list of my favorite A54 cases to help you narrow down your selections and make it easier to make a solid choice.

You Won't Believe the Insane Deal on Spigen iPhone 15 Pro Cases Right Now!
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/024f9119-46a4-4e88-ad96-d7e8c0537bf8.jpg Spigen Cases: Are They Any Good and Should You Buy Them?
If you've recently purchased a new Android phone or one of the excellent iPhones, you've likely looked into protective cases. As you may know, there are countless brands on Amazon selling cases for various smartphones. One name that tends to stand out in this field is Spigen, and you probably have seen its name or logo before. This begs the question: Are Spigen cases any good, and should you buy them? Let's dive right into it. What are Spigen cases?
Founded in 2008, Spigen aims to create high-quality mobile accessories that fit each individual's needs. They do this with many extensive lines of cases, each with its own purposes and functionality. As such, Spigen has five separate lines to choose from:
* Armor: If you need to ensure your device is solid and protected against even the harshest falls, Spigen's Armor cases are what you want.
* Hybrid: A mix between style and security, the Hybrid Spigen case will protect your phone against most falls and accidents but not be as bulky as the Armor.
* Liquid: Spigen's Liquid line provides cases with a small amount of protection, which is perfect if you're not worried about wear and tear but still want something less slippery than the phone to grip. Some Liquid cases are clear, too, so you can see the original phone color underneath.
* Thin Fit / Air: Similar to the Liquid, the Thin Fit fits snugly around the phone but provides slightly lesser protection than the Liquid. It's mainly for protection against scratches.
* Wallet: No mystery on this one — this is a Spigen case that can double as a wallet! The Wallet gives your phone some protection while offering a flap to put bank and ID cards in.
Spigen also has some of the cheaper brand-name cases on the market. Prices will vary by phone model, but generally, cases from Spigen aren't exorbitantly priced, and they're something most people can afford. The cases offer a great price-to-performance ratio without compromising the quality.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/c992b9c2-e200-4e55-ab10-dfdc65ebd3f7.jpg What's the best Spigen case line?
Of the many main lines, which Spigen case line is best is going to depend a lot on your day-to-day use of the device. For most people, the Hybrid will probably be the best bet, offering great protection without bulking the phone out too much. After all, most people will be prone to dropping their phones on the pavement once in a while, and the Hybrid Spigen case will protect against those accidents.
However, if you're a person working a labor-intensive job like construction or are buying a case for a younger phone owner, the Armor will be able to protect your smart device against all the stuff life may throw at it.

Spigen cases are known for their high-quality materials and attention to detail. They offer a great balance between protection and style, making them a popular choice among phone owners. While there are other brands that offer similar products, Spigen's reputation for quality and affordability sets them apart. What phones can I buy a Spigen case for?

The Samsung 990 Pro and 980 Pro are two of the best SSDs on the market, but is the newer model worth the extra cost? Samsung 990 Pro SSD 1TB
The Samsung 990 Pro is truly pushing the limits of what PCIe 4.0 storage can offer. It offers the fastest transfer speeds we've seen so far for a Gen 4 drive while not costing much more than slower SSDs.
Pros
* Higher sequential reads and writes
* Newer
* Not much more expensive than 980 Pro
Cons
* May come with dysfunctional firmware
* $110 at Best Buy
* $110 at Samsung Samsung 980 Pro 1TB
The Samsung 980 Pro M.2 NVMe SSD competes with the best M.2 modules on the market for a top spot. It offers an impressive read and write speed of 7,000MB/s and over 5,000MB/s, respectively.
Pros
* Similar random performance
* Cheaper
Cons
* Worse sequential performance
* Not significantly cheaper than 990 Pro
* $120 at Best Buy
* $108 at Amazon Quick Links Pricing, availability, specs 990 Pro vs. 980 Pro: Hardware differences 990 Pro vs. 980 Pro: Performance Which one should you buy?
The end of the road for PCIe 4.0 SSDs is near, which debuted in 2019. The best drives are hitting the limit of what's possible with PCIe 4.0, which begs the question: how much faster is the Samsung 990 Pro than the 980 Pro, two of the best drives on the market, and which one is the best overall for laptops and desktops? For most users, thankfully, the choice won't be difficult to make. Pricing, availability, specs

At the time of writing, the 1TB models of the 990 Pro and 980 Pro are both in the region of $120, making the 990 Pro the better buy by default since it's newer and features some improvements. It's a similar story at 2TB where the older 980 hits its capacity limit. The 990 Pro 2TB and 980 Pro 2TB are priced at $180 and $170, respectively. The 4TB 990 Pro comes in at $340. The pricing situation is also pretty similar when you look at the heatsink models of each drive, which cost around $10 more. On paper, this is more favorable for the 990 Pro with its theoretically higher performance.
Storage capacity 1TB 1TB Hardware Interface PCIe 4.0 PCIe 4.0 Brand Samsung Samsung Transfer rate 7,450/6,900 MB/s read/write 7,000/5,000 MB/s read/write TBW 600 600 DRAM 1GB DDR4 1GB DDR4 990 Pro vs. 980 Pro: Hardware differences
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/e18633f4-cc13-467a-a0cd-330d508a52d0.jpg
The 990 Pro uses Samsung's 8nm Pascal controller, a modest improvement over the 980 Pro's Elpis controller, which is also on the 8nm node. Additionally, the 990 Pro also makes use of the latest V-NAND technology, which allows for higher storage densities and improved performance.
On the other hand, the heatsink-less 2TB model is a bit of a different story, as the 980 Pro 2TB can be found cheaper than its 990 Pro sibling. Generally speaking, the 980 Pro is slower, has one fewer capacity options, and costs about the same outside of promotions. The 990 Pro does enjoy a slightly wider advantage in random read performance at 2TB, so spending the extra money on the 990 Pro wouldn't be a waste.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/024c0de6-b1e9-4d46-9332-508cb127b2bc.jpg Which one should you buy?
The Samsung 990 Pro is the better buy for most users, thanks to its newer controller, higher transfer speeds, and similar pricing to the 980 Pro. However, if you're looking for a cheaper option and don't mind slightly slower performance, the 980 Pro is still a great choice.
