The Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro's "touch controls are good" and offer a "little haptic tick." The Voice Detection also works very well. single_mind also shed some light on the battery performance and said a one-hour conversation with ANC enabled consumed about 33% battery, and putting the buds in the charging case charged them up to 97% in about 12 minutes.

OpenAI Breach Highlights AI Companies' Treasure Trove of Data for Hackers
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/d59f1837-175f-4993-b1e5-8cfbcfa03f3a.jpg
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/3ba8fa2f-313e-43ae-b58c-68921096d3ed.jpg
The recent breach of OpenAI's systems serves as a reminder that AI companies have become prime targets for hackers. While the hack itself appears to be superficial, it highlights the immense value of the data these companies possess.
AI companies have amassed vast amounts of high-quality training data, bulk user interactions, and customer data. This data is incredibly valuable to competitors, regulators, and malicious actors. The training datasets, in particular, are a treasure trove of information, requiring significant human effort to curate and refine.
The user data generated by interactions with AI models like ChatGPT is equally valuable, providing insights into user behavior and preferences. This data can be used to inform marketing strategies, product development, and more. Furthermore, the customer data generated by companies using AI tools for various tasks is a goldmine of industrial secrets.
The fact that AI companies have access to such sensitive data makes them attractive targets for hackers. While these companies can implement robust security measures, the value of the data they possess makes them vulnerable to attacks.
The OpenAI breach should serve as a wake-up call for the industry to prioritize security and transparency. As AI continues to permeate various aspects of our lives, it is essential to ensure that the companies driving this revolution are responsible stewards of the data they collect and process.
In the end, the OpenAI breach is a reminder that AI companies are not just gatekeepers of innovative technology but also custodians of valuable data. It is crucial that they take their responsibility seriously and prioritize the security and privacy of their users.

X Plans to More Deeply Integrate Grok's AI, App Researcher Finds
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/4a71054f-a8a9-4af6-bbf8-ec9bc5832972.jpg
X is exploring more ways to integrate Grok's AI into the social networking app. According to a series of recent discoveries, X is developing new features like the ability to ask Grok about X accounts, use Grok by highlighting text in the app, and access Grok's chatbot through a pop-up on the side of the screen while continuing to use other parts of X.
The findings were recently shared by independent app researcher Nima Owji. He often tweets his own ideas about features he'd like to see on X. In this case, however, Owji says he discovered the additions on X's website on Friday, July 5, but confirmed they are not yet rolled out to the public, as far as he can tell.
In one example, Owji found that Grok could be used via a pop-up on the right of the screen while you're browsing X, similar to how you can check your DMs (direct messages) from the app's home screen via a smaller window overlaid on top of the screen.
This format resembles how other companies like Google and Microsoft use chatbots within their productivity apps, where access to their AI chatbots is often available in a sidebar to the right of the screen, putting the AI chatbot within easy reach. This placement could allow X users to chat with Grok more often, including when posting to the app or browsing the timeline and coming across new information they wanted to learn more about.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/6ca3461f-89ac-4d61-8a71-5e943fdc17be.jpg
Other developments show how Grok could become a more deeply integrated part of the X experience.
In one case, Owji found it was being used to research X user profiles, and in another, it was used for searching terms you find within posts on X.
For instance, one new development would allow users to click a button to learn more about an account on X, though it's not exactly clear what information will be included or excluded in the account summary provided. (Presumably, you could ask Grok today about an account on X to get an idea about how this forthcoming feature may work.)
Perhaps more interesting is the built-in ability to search Grok simply by highlighting a word found in an X post.
In this case, you could drag your cursor across a term (or terms), and then click on the “Ask Grok” button that appears below the word to kick off a search with the chatbot. This would make it easier to ask Grok about news and information you saw on X, or any other topics where you wanted to dig deeper.
X last year added Grok to the app, formerly known as Twitter, initially as a way to boost paid subscriptions on the Premium Plus plan. With rising competition from OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini and others, X in March expanded access to Grok to include mid-tier Premium subscribers, as well.
Despite the broadened availability, app intelligence firm Appfigures found that X's in-app purchase revenue was still trending down as of May 2024.
According to its data, X saw $7.6 million in net revenue this May, down from $8 million in April and $8.2 million in March. Appfigures theorized this decline could be due to how creators on X are incentivized to post to generate income, which has led many to post often but with little substance in order to increase their views. The firm also noted that the Premium subscription price could be turning off some users. X also has more competitors than ever, with apps like Instagram's Threads, Mastodon and startups like Bluesky and noplace, building text-first social apps of their own.
However, it could be that X is still recovering from its name change, as users continue to seek out an app known as “Twitter.” In May, X saw 3 million downloads on the App Store, down from 4.4 million a year ago — a 32% drop, Appfigures noted.

Epic Games Calls Out Apple for Rejecting Its Games Store in the EU
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/60cdb423-5b1b-4114-92ad-d40230679e41.jpg
Fortnite maker Epic Games has hit a stumbling block in its plans to bring the company's alternative app store, the Epic Games Store, to the EU. As now permitted by the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), Epic Games announced earlier this year it planned to bring both the digital storefront and its flagship game, Fortnite, back to iOS in Europe. Now, Epic says Apple has rejected its submission twice over concerns that its Games Store looked too much like Apple's own App Store.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/abe38119-87d2-4dff-97ff-d3108e663b38.jpg
According to posts on X, Epic Games says Apple has rejected its submission over details like the position of its "Install" button for games, which Apple said is too similar to its own "Get" button. It also said that it was rejected for its "in-app purchase" label being too much like Apple's label.
Epic argues that it's using the same naming conventions that are standard across popular app stores on other platforms.
The company called the rejection "arbitrary, obstructive, and in violation of the DMA," and said it has shared its concerns with the European Commission.
Epic's case represents a high-profile example of how stringent Apple will be with the new rules that permit third-party app stores on iOS for the first time. Excessive rejections could also dissuade other developers interested in testing the waters with their own distribution channels.
Apple responded to Epic Games' post by noting that it's trying to help the company get its Games Store live, and that under Section 2.3 (G) of its developer agreement, Epic Games agreed not to make its Games Store appear confusingly similar to the App Store. Apple says that Epic has generally followed this guideline, except for the design and copy of the download button.
Apple also noted that Epic Games' Fortnite app has already been approved.
Under the DMA's new rules, Apple is required to allow third-party app stores on the iPhone as the tech giant was deemed a "gatekeeper" under EU law. App developers can also switch to a set of new DMA rules that allow them to reduce commissions on in-app purchases on the App Store, though the process still involves fees under a complicated new structure that has developers paying Apple for the use of its technology instead.
Epic has been battling Apple for years for a means of reaching its customers on the iPhone without having to pay commissions on in-app purchases. The company took the case to the courts in the U.S., where it ultimately lost on most fronts, having failed to prove Apple was a monopolist. But Epic's continued complaints saw Apple briefly terminating the game maker's developer account in the EU, before EU regulators again stepped in. Since then, Epic Games has vowed to launch Fortnite on iOS and iPad in the EU and bring its Games Store to the market.

The upcoming budget CMF Phone 1 from Nothing will debut on June 8, and the company is stepping up its teasers. Today's post reveals more interesting details about the phone.
We already knew about the modular nature of the CMF Phone 1 and its replaceable back covers, but today we get to see four of the available back colors - black, blue, light green, and orange. There may be more in the future, but the handset will likely launch with these first.

We've seen some attempts in the past with the Motorola Moto X (2nd Gen) and its replaceable bamboo back covers. And more recently, Carl Pei's ex-company, OnePlus, released the OnePlus 2, which had an easily replaceable back cover with sandstone.
It's a cool idea for sure, as you don't have to stick to a color or spend huge amounts of money if the back panel breaks. You can just replace it with a new one or with a color you like better.

Samsung Guidance Reveals Spike in Q2 Profit as AI Chip Market Grows

Samsung has released its financial guidance for the second quarter of 2024, showing a significant increase in profits. The company also reported sales of approximately KRW 74 trillion, a 23% increase compared to the same period last year.
The operating profit is expected to be KRW 10.4 trillion, which is fifteen times higher than April-June 2023.
(all units in KRW / USD) Q2 2024 Earnings Guidance Q1 2024 QoQ Change Q2 2023 YoY Change Sales 74 trillion / 53.5 billion 71.92 trillion / 52.06 billion 2.9% 60 trillion / 46 billion 23% Operating Profit 10.4 trillion / 7.53 billion 6.61 trillion / 4.78 billion 57% 0.6 trillion / 455 million 1633%
However, this dramatic increase is slightly misleading. 2023 was a challenging year for Samsung due to declining chip demand. While consumers and manufacturers have shifted away from chips for graphics cards, they are now focusing on the growing trend of AI.
Companies are developing AI-powered devices and servers that require more computing power, and Samsung supplies the necessary semiconductors. A comparison with 2022, before the significant dip, shows that sales and profit are now within the same range.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/aa5afe0e-5911-406a-a4bf-41d817181ba9.jpg
According to research by TrendForce, quoted by Reuters, memory chip prices surged by 13-18% in just one quarter.
Analysts predict that high-end chips (HBM) and SSDs will lead the market in 2024, though Samsung has been trailing behind fellow Korean manufacturer SK Hynix in supplying HBM to key customers like Nvidia.

Honor is gearing up to launch the Magic V3 next week. After seeing the phone in orange with a faux leather back, the company has now showcased the new foldable in three more colors: Green, White, and Black.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/8391ebd4-d59e-480d-b750-690ffaed07ce.jpg
According to Honor, the colors are inspired by nature. The White option appears to have a glass panel, which changes shade depending on the angle of the light. The Green and Black options, on the other hand, feature classic frosted panels.

The frame around the phone and the camera island will differ in all the options. We know the orange one gets gold accents, while the Green one will have Grey. The White option sticks to white, and the Black option appears to have slightly darker grey sides.

There are still many unknowns, such as the chipset, battery capacity, and the triple cameras on the back. We expect to learn more details in the next few days before everything becomes official on July 12.

Here is the reworded text in markdown: Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro's First Impressions Shared by Early Buyers Ahead of Next Week's Official Debut
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/cd8e401f-1c52-42b8-bdbe-b0557fb22699.jpg
Early buyers of the Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro have shared their first impressions of the upcoming TWS earphones, which are expected to be officially announced next week. Two Reddit users, Plastic_Development1 and LiNx0NeXtUs, managed to purchase the Buds3 Pro before the launch and shared their thoughts on the device.
Plastic_Development1 said the sound quality is superb, preferring the Buds3 Pro over their first-gen Apple AirPods Pro. The Ambient Mode and Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) are also better than the AirPods Pro. However, the voice recorded through the Buds3 Pro's mic sounded muffled, and the mic quality was similar to the AirPods Pro.
The user also mentioned that the settings menu only showed AAC and SBC as supported audio codecs for the Buds3 Pro, which support touch controls - slide on the stem for volume adjustment and squeeze the stem to pause/skip the music.

A screenshot shared on Reddit revealed that the lights on Buds3 Pro's stems can be turned on/off with the pinch-and-hold gesture. But this works when both the buds are out of the case and not in your ears. Also, the buds will require at least 30% battery to light up, and they will have support for three lighting styles - Blinking, Fade in and out, and Steady.
Another screenshot revealed Voice Detect support for the Ambient Mode, which can be turned off manually by pinching the earbud after it's automatically enabled.

Regarding the design and build, Plastic_Development1 said the charging case and the Buds3 Pro feel premium. The user believes that the plastic hinge for the case instead of metal doesn't compromise on the quality, and they feel sturdy compared to the Galaxy Buds2 Pro.
Reddit user LiNx0NeXtUs said the Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro's stems don't feel like a big upgrade over the beans design of the Buds2 Pro, and the music quality isn't different either. However, the Galaxy Buds3 Pro's Ambient Mode is better than its predecessor, and they feel as comfortable as the Buds2 Pro if not better.
LiNx0NeXtUs said the Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro's ANC is also better than the Buds2 Pro, and the AirPods Pro. Additionally, LiNx0NeXtUs revealed that the slide gesture can only be used to control the volume while the pinch/press gesture can do four different things. By default, a long-press will let you switch between ANC and Ambient Mode.

Reddit user single_mind said that the Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro and their charging case are very light and made of plastic, which makes them feel cheap. However, the Galaxy Buds3 Pro "are very sturdy" and have "no flex at all." The "case is solid and has a very minor heft."
single_mind said the Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro's sound quality is "a lot better than the Pixel Buds Pro." They have "better treble, better bass, and they are louder." However[...]

Welcome to our weekly recap of everything you can't miss from the world of startups. Most Interesting Startup Stories from the Week
Even seemingly crowded categories can see newcomers climb up the ranks. This includes social media: A new app called noplace hit No. 1 on the App Store right as it launched out of invite-only mode.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/61713787-8864-4d7c-b704-62efdddf5696.jpg
Besides confirming user appetite for new forms of social media, this also goes to show that it is still possible to go viral in 2024, as did French app ten ten earlier this year. Both apps also show that there’s value in revisiting older tech ideas — Myspace for nospace and walkie-talkies for ten ten.
It is also a reminder that consumer tech can find VC backers. It is a segment noplace CEO Tiffany Zhong knows well; before starting this company and raising funding from investors, including Alexis Ohanian’s 776 and Forerunner Ventures, she helped Binary Capital source early-stage consumer deals before creating early-stage consumer fund Pineapple Capital.
Look up: Hebbia, a startup using generative AI to search large documents and return answers, has raised a nearly $100 million Series B led by Andreessen Horowitz, sources told us. Former planet: Robinhood acquired AI-powered research platform Pluto Capital to add new tools and features to its investing app, such as real-time portfolio optimization. We don’t need no edtech?: Unacademy cut another 250 jobs as Indian edtech continues to struggle in a post-COVID world. New adepts: Amazon hired Adept co-founders and portions of its team as it licensed its tech. But the AI startup will still exist, refocusing on “solutions that enable agentic AI.” Oasis in crypto drought?: Valued at $2.1 billion in a 2022 funding round, India’s leading cryptocurrency exchange CoinDCX expanded internationally through the acquisition of BitOasis, a digital asset platform in the Middle East and North Africa. Most Interesting Fundraises This Week
One area of tech that’s particularly hopeful is startups fighting cancer — and getting venture funding to do so. Biotech startup Granza Bio is one of these and raised a $7 million seed from Felicis, Refactor, and Y Combinator to advance delivery of cancer treatments.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/e5f816a8-813e-44af-a47c-b8128249327e.jpg
Granza Bio is a winter 2024 Y Combinator grad, and YC wants to back more startups like it. YC’s request for startups (RFS) shared in February included a call for “a way to end cancer.” The main focus of that RFS was on startups that can reduce the cost of MRIs — not a perfect answer since MRIs are known to produce false positives. So it’s noteworthy that the accelerator is actually approaching the battle against cancer from multiple angles, including biotech.
Another interesting note: Felicis is a generalist VC firm but invests 10% to 15% of its capital into biology-focused startups. That’s also a sign that biotech is going mainstream and is another reason to keep an eye on new startups emerging in this space.
New centaur: HR tech is in high demand everywhere, including in Japan, where SmartHR raised a $140 million Series E round of funding after its annual recurring revenue (ARR) reached $100 million. Material world: French deep tech startup Altrove raised some $4 million to leverage AI models and lab automation to create new materials. Cart path: Robotics startup Cartken raised $10 million in a recent funding round led by 468 Capital. It also found that demand for its small autonomous robots goes beyond sidewalk delivery and is exploring indoor use cases. Happy days: Apiday raised €10 million in a Series A funding round that w[...]

Samsung has released a new teaser for its highly anticipated Unpacked event, scheduled to take place on July 10. The event is expected to unveil several new devices, including the Galaxy Z Fold6, Galaxy Z Flip6, Galaxy Watch7, Galaxy Watch Ultra, Galaxy Buds3, and Galaxy Buds3 Pro.
The company has already put up digital billboards across the world to hype up the event, and now it's back with a teaser video, urging users to "unfold their story" with Galaxy AI. The video hints at the foldable nature of the upcoming devices, with phrases like "explore a new genre," "change your angle a bit, or flip it completely," and "ride a different wave."

Amazon Faces Increased EU Scrutiny Over Recommender Algorithms and Ads Transparency
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/96809f0b-aa4a-4862-bff4-bff5eb6b4c3f.jpg
The European Commission has sent Amazon a request for information (RFI) regarding its compliance with the bloc's rulebook for digital services. This move highlights areas where EU enforcers are increasing their scrutiny of the ecommerce giant.
The RFI focuses on Amazon's recommender systems, ads transparency provisions, and risk assessment measures. This is not the first time Amazon has faced scrutiny from the EU. In November, the Commission sent an RFI to Amazon regarding risk assessments and mitigations around the dissemination of illegal products and the protection of fundamental rights, including in relation to its recommender systems.
The EU's Digital Services Act (DSA) puts requirements on platforms and services to abide by a series of governance standards, including in areas like content moderation. For online marketplaces like Amazon, the law also requires measures to enable them to take action to tackle risks around the sale of illegal goods. As a very large online platform (VLOP), Amazon has additional algorithmic transparency and accountability obligations under the regime.
The Commission's RFI asks Amazon to provide detailed information on its compliance with DSA rules related to the transparency of recommender systems and their parameters. It also requests more information about Amazon's provisions for maintaining an ad repository, another legally mandated transparency step for larger platforms. Additionally, the Commission wants more detail about Amazon's risk assessment report, which is required under the DSA.
Amazon has until July 26 to provide the requested information. After that, any next steps will depend on the Commission's assessment of its response. Failure to respond satisfactorily to an RFI could itself trigger a sanction.
The EU has been attentive to the area of online marketplaces, naming them as one of a handful of priority issues for its enforcement of the DSA's rules for VLOPs. Last month, the Commission sent separate RFIs to rival marketplace VLOPs, Shein and Temu, soon after designating them as VLOPs.
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/4a7b5741-1855-4579-9a3f-4e59ae9c7313.jpg
The EU wants to ensure that platforms' commercial agendas aren't the only thing programming their automated decisions. It wants the DSA to act as a shield against the risks of AI-driven societal harms, such as platforms pushing content that's harmful for people's mental health or recommending shoppers buy dangerous products.

YouTube's Updated Eraser Tool Removes Copyrighted Music Without Impacting Other Audio
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/28a585b1-15b9-41e1-be0f-514109a70425.jpg
On July 4, YouTube released an updated eraser tool for creators, allowing them to easily remove copyrighted music from their videos without affecting other audio, such as dialogues or sound effects.
Neal Mohan, YouTube's chief, posted about the tool on X, saying, "Good news, creators: our updated Erase Song tool helps you easily remove copyright-claimed music from your video (while leaving the rest of your audio intact)."
The company has been testing the eraser tool for a while, but it wasn't as accurate in removing copyrighted songs. The new tool uses an AI-powered algorithm to specifically detect and remove the song without impacting other audio in the clip.
However, on its support page, YouTube warns that the algorithm might fail to remove just the song at times. "This edit might not work if the song is hard to remove. If this tool doesn’t successfully remove the claim on a video, you can try other editing options, such as muting all sound in the claimed segments or trimming out the claimed segments," the company said.
Alternatively, creators can choose to select "Mute all sound in the claimed segments" to silence bits of video that possibly contain copyrighted material. Once the creator successfully edits the video, YouTube removes the content ID claim—the company's system for identifying the use of copyrighted content in different clips.

Quantum Rise Grabs $15M Seed for Its AI-Driven 'Consulting 2.0' Startup

Quantum Rise, a Chicago-based startup that specializes in AI-driven automation for companies like dunnhumby (a retail analytics platform for the grocery industry), has secured a $15 million seed round from Erie Street Growth Partners. The startup's approach is similar to UIPath's, a company renowned for bringing robotic process automation to the enterprise, but with a broader focus on the AI hurdles companies face, and more hand-holding.
Quantum Rise deploys AI into companies under a so-called "Consulting 2.0" model to automate workflows, roadmaps, tailored AI solutions, and generally accelerate businesses. The startup is the second act from Alex Kelleher, the former founder of adtech platform Cognitive Match, which was acquired by Magnetic back in 2014.
The potential market opportunity for AI-driven automation is significant. Consulting giant BCG expects to generate a fifth of its revenues in 2024 from helping corporations integrate AI, and 40% by 2026. Meanwhile, IBM has secured more than $1 billion in sales commitments related to generative AI. This suggests a space is opening up for swift-moving startups to enter the arena, and that's what Kelleher is betting on with Quantum Rise.
Kelleher believes merging human and machine intelligence is where the opportunity lies. "The entire consulting industry is about to come crashing to the ground because it's built on people's time and lack of automation," Kelleher said. "We will bring heavy engineering to the space. The number of CEOs of these $300M companies who don't know where to start is enormous. They can't afford the Deloittes of this world. That's where we come in. They want somebody to come in and just automate the company and make it happen."
In a statement, Terry Graunke, chairman and CEO of Erie Street Growth Partners, added: "The Quantum Rise team uniquely understands how to apply data, automation, and AI to augment human intelligence and drive growth."

India's Airtel Refutes Data Breach Claims Amid Customer Concerns
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/b0fbf14c-c303-408e-840a-dc328aee3887.jpg
Airtel, India's second-largest telecommunications operator, has denied any breach of its systems following reports of a possible security lapse that has sparked concern among its customers.
The telecom company, which also sells productivity and security solutions to businesses, stated that it had conducted a thorough investigation and found no evidence of a breach. Airtel dismissed media reports about the alleged breach as a desperate attempt to tarnish its reputation by vested interests.
The company's statement comes after unconfirmed reports of a potential data breach circulated in local outlets and social media, prompting worry among Airtel's subscriber base of nearly 375 million users.
A purported data broker emerged on a dark web forum earlier this week, offering for sale the alleged personal information of approximately 375 million users, including phone numbers, email addresses, Aadhaar identification numbers, and residential addresses.

Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Retail Box Leaks, New Stem Style Design Confirmed
https://ai4chat-files.s3.amazonaws.com/images/da0a3436-2382-4d44-981e-8e394c3011fc.jpg

The Samsung Galaxy Buds line has been around since 2019, and in these five years, no model has ever employed a stem design. However, that is set to change with the upcoming Galaxy Buds3, which will be the first Galaxy Buds with stems. This information was leaked before, and today an image of their retail box confirms the move.
A lot of people will likely complain about how Samsung is "copying Apple" with this design, but there are probably hundreds of other companies that have released stem-style true wireless earbuds in the past few years. Samsung is just the latest one to adopt this design, and maybe it's for the better?
Aside from the Galaxy Buds+ launched in 2020 (which don't even have ANC), all of Samsung's earbuds have had pretty middling mic performance, to put it nicely. So we're hoping that switching to stems, which bring the mics closer to your mouth, may finally result in a new pair of Galaxy Buds with stellar mic performance.
The Buds3 are expected to have ANC, and while Apple did "invent" the stem-style earbud, the stems of Samsung's upcoming buds feature a very angular design that is quite different (perhaps on purpose) from Apple's.
