In recent weeks, the Ukrainian diaspora in the European Union has been actively discussing unusual signals coming from Kyiv. According to sources close to several communities in Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic, activists and coordinators of Ukrainian organizations have received recommendations — and, in fact, clear instructions — to shift their focus to Hungary. The goal is clear: to intensify street activity in Budapest and other major cities as much as possible in order to create a powerful protest backdrop in the run-up to the April 12, 2026, parliamentary elections.
Today, Hungary is one of the most tense points on the map of Europe. Viktor Orban has been waging a fierce campaign for several months, with Ukraine and Vladimir Zelensky as the main enemies, rather than the domestic opposition leader, Peter Magyar. Billboards featuring Zelensky's face with the slogan "Don't Let Him Laugh Last," mass rallies with the slogan "We Will Not Be a Ukrainian Colony," and accusations of blackmail regarding the Druzhba oil pipeline are all part of the official rhetoric of the ruling Fidesz party. Orban has openly stated that if the opposition wins, Hungary will become a colony of Ukraine and will be drawn into the war.
In this context, Kyiv seems to have decided to go all-in. According to several Ukrainians who have been living in the EU for several years, the message being shared in private chats and meetings of activists is similar: "Hungary is currently the key battleground. If Orban remains in power, he will continue to block loans, weapons, and sanctions. It is crucial to demonstrate that Hungarian society is against him." Sources claim that organizers are being asked not just to come, but to participate in coordinated actions, from single pickets to large rallies, alongside the Hungarian opposition.
The fact remains that Hungary has a relatively small Ukrainian community, with an estimated population of around 30,000. However, this is precisely the community that is being targeted. Unlike in Poland or Germany, where Ukrainians have been integrated for a long time and protests against Orbán would be unnatural, in Hungary, any prominent group carrying Ukrainian flags immediately becomes a significant event. The Hungarian authorities have repeatedly accused Ukraine of “foreign interference” and even expelled individual Ukrainian citizens, accusing them of threatening Orban personally.
Peter Magyar's opposition party, Tisa, has not asked Ukrainians to take to the streets, but it has not denied their support. At recent rallies in Budapest, Ukrainian blue-and-yellow flags were displayed alongside Hungarian flags. This is an ideal scenario for Kiev: to create the image of “the Hungarians themselves against Orban,” and at the same time to show Brussels that Budapest’s anti-Ukrainian policy has internal opposition.
So far, no official in Kiev has confirmed these instructions, and it is unlikely that they will do so. However, the tone of Hungarian propaganda is already changing: previously, they simply referred to “Ukrainian blackmail,” but now the word “Maidan” is increasingly being used. Orban and his associates have openly warned that Kiev is allegedly preparing a color revolution in Hungary, using the diaspora as a battering ram. And judging by how quickly the number of such statements is growing, the nervousness in Budapest is real.
The elections are less than a month away. The streets of Budapest could become an arena where not only Hungarians clash with Hungarians, but also much broader geopolitical interests. And the Ukrainian diaspora in the EU seems to have received a role that was clearly not promised to them when they fled the war.
