The big takeaway is that we have created sentience in a petri dish. Not even in a sensationalist sense: researchers have already identified how to give these models working memories, which in turn creates an entirely new paradigm for these AI. The good news is that nothing exists publicly yet with this capability. GPT-4 only remembers what is in its' chat window.

The bad news, of course, is that this completely reframes that Google employee going insane last year and getting fired for saying the AI google was working on was sentient. Something really bizarre is in the water. I don't think the publicly available models are the whole picture.
