The reason the mainline Pokémon games don’t look as good as they could is cuz they save money by saving space. Simple as. The spinoffs don’t care about that, so they actually try really hard to look good.

And you might be thinking well Bea, you fucking dumbass. They used all the room on the DS Cart for sprites and battle animations. Yeah, sure, maybe. Except, there’s one problem: the DS Carts have an outrageous amount of space and the DS Mainline Pokémon games only ever, at most, use half of what is theoretically available per cart by gen 5. In gen 4, they don’t even try, they use like a quarter of what’s available.
