A Chinese government official has been sentenced to life in prison for illegitimate business operations related to running a 2.4 billion Chinese yuan ($329 million) Bitcoin (BTC) mining enterprise and for unrelated charges of corruption. Prosecutors say that Xiao Yi “covered up” the mining operation by instructing relevant departments to fabricate statistical reports and adjust the classification of electricity consumption. From 2017 to 2020, Jiumu’s electricity consumption accounted for 10% of Fuzhou’s total electricity consumption.

FBI has flagged six Bitcoin (BTC) wallets linked to North Korean state-backed hacking group Lazarus. The six wallets contain 1,580 BTC worth $40 million believed to be hoarded from various cryptocurrency hacks over the past year. Although the likes of Lazarus Group have stolen billions of dollars worth of crypto, the public ledger technology makes it difficult for them to launder funds, as they can be tracked and frozen.

Binance experienced a rapid Bitcoin (BTC) withdrawal worth $150 million across five transactions in one minute, all recorded in the same block. According to the blockchain tracker Whale Alert data, there were five major Bitcoin withdrawals worth 5,729 BTC (approximately $150 million) from Binance within a minute. The movement of such a large quantity of Bitcoin usually indicates that a significant whale holder has decided to move their assets off the exchange.

According to a recent survey conducted by the joint team of Saint Petersburg Exchange and the Russian Trading System (RTS), more than half of Russian citizens are willing to store their money in a central bank digital currency (CBDC). However, when it comes to storing more than 20,000 rubles (roughly $212), only 17% trust the digital ruble. The most common hindrances cited include insufficient information about the technology (22%) and concerns about cybertheft and system failures (21%).

In a swift and intriguing turn of events, a previously enigmatic Bitcoin address managed to catapult itself to the esteemed position of the third-largest holder of BTC. As reported by Cointelegraph on Aug. 22, the address in question accumulated a staggering 118,000 BTC. While its identity has now been attributed to Robinhood, questions still linger, as the financial giant has neither confirmed nor denied that it owns the address.

Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs released its latest deep dive into the murky world of cryptocurrency-related hacking, focusing on the exploits of North Korean cybercriminals.
