Polyphemus (a Cyclops who does not know justice or law) is reproached by Odysseus for not following the traditional laws of hospitality set by Zeus: Odysseus’ party acted as suppliants but Polyphemus did not heed their pledge and acted against the aidôs.

Aidôs, which is usually translated as ‘respect’ or ‘shame’, identifies modesty and propriety in one’s attitude and due respect for gods and men.
We experience aidôs when we feel that a certain conduct or circumstance could deprive us of our reputation (doxa). We may conclude that we act according to aidôs when we behave according to the standards of our society in our interactions with men and gods.

Chods (Chodové) are an ethnic group from Western part of the Czech Republic known as Bohemia. Chods are known for their walking hammer-sticks as well as a special folk costume which includes footwear and hats made for long walks in the forest and mountain regions of Bohemian borderland. The latter is reflected in the word Chod itself which means the one who walks, patrols the forests. A rare example of an occupational identity effecting an ethnic one. Chods have their own dialect of Czech and a strong identity despite their unfortunately small numbers.

Homosexuality in the Ancient Greece

The myth of Ancient Greece being a homo utopia was popularized by Oscar Wilde, a 19th c. homosexual poet. Despite it’s popularity today, the idea is baseless as Greek texts tell a different story.
In Athens, homosexuals were obliged to declare their vice in ecclesia, after which they lost all civil rights. If they hid their perversion, they were ostracized or executed. Derogatory nicknames e.g. euryproktos (wide anus), chaunoproktos (gaping anus), and lakkoproktos (anus like a pit) were applied to them.

PIE in the Sky

The core claim made by Dumézil to support his pie myth claims is the three functions of his Trifunctional Schema, which are:
1. sovereignty/magic
2. war
3. fertility/productivity

This tripartide structure is imposed post hoc, not an uncovered secret.

For starters, his ideas dont fit with the sources. Odin for example has sovereignty, magic & war aspects. Multiple gods in multiple religions cross these 'rigid boundaries,' making his tripartide system false by examining the sources. When you cherry pick examples, and ignore counter examples, your model becomes unreliable. Besides, any deity can be shoehorned into a function by redefining the function post hoc.

This system is also falsified by new evidence. Specifically, Hittite mythology (pre-1500 BCE) lacks this trifunctional Pantheon, which is instead dominated by storm gods and chthonic pairs, with no clear “third function” fertility class.

What Dumézil does is start with a conclusion and twist facts, post hoc, to "prove his case"

Werewolves run to the forest and live there like beasts. After joining a pack they feed it by attacking cattle, but not eating any, just choking.

A werewolf is alien to everything wolven. He’s calm, often whines, eats only bread.

According to Ukranian and Belarussian belief a werewolf doesn’t even howl like a wolf, but moans and cries like a man.

Interestingly, according to folk belief when a man forgets God, a witch takes him to a hill, sticks a knife in the ground and tells him to jump over it three times; then a man grows hair and becomes a werewolf.

Going to translate some werewolf lore. My regular followers know that it’s a topic I like to return to partially just because it’s interesting on it’s own and partially to combat the Hollywoodization of werewolves (as well as vampires and other evil spirits).

These and other examples from all over the world show that traditional Pagan perspective sees Gods as real, fully physical entities, rather than emanations or attributes of shapeless powers as some modern atheo-pagans would suggest (or ancient heretics like Greek philosophers).

And it is said that after they left the Forum they were not seen again by anyone, though great search was made for them by the man who had been left in command of the city. The next day, when those at the head of affairs received the letters from the dictator, and besides the other particulars of the battle, learned also of the appearance of the divinities, they concluded, as we may reasonably infer, that it was the same gods who had appeared in both places, and were convinced that the apparitions had been those of Castor and Pollux.

In the Iliad Apollo upbraids Achilles for his behavior towards Hector after his defeat: he acted with a cruel heart, “like a lion”, without pity or aidôs.

In his wrath Achilles did not pay the customary, due respect to the body of his adversary, who had always acted honorably.

Thetis was originally a sea nymph whom Peleus won by wrestling with her. She soon abandoned his house and only returned from time to time to look after her son, Achilles. Nymphs are often mothers of mythical heroes.

Dumezil was an atheist and obviously saw Gods as just ideas. This is the reason behind his disregard for details too. Reducing Gods to archetypes/functions etc is like saying that since John and Jack are both male, wear glasses and work as engineers they are secretly the same person! Of course we don’t do that with people since we know they are real, but when it comes to Gods such generalizations are often tolerated since the wast majority are atheists even in (self-proclaimed) Pagan circles.

It is said that somewhere in the world, in the mountains, wolves gather under a commander who instructs them on what to do.
He climbed a tree to avoid being eaten. From his perch, he watched as wolves came from all directions, gathering beneath him. Among them he noticed one with three legs – it was injured by a gunshot. Then came an officer…the leader…The wolves lined up like soldiers. The commander assigned tasks, like punishing those who worked on St. Elijah’s day. With a single word, they obeyed and dispersed to execute his commands.

In V.Gnatyk’s materials it is stated that werewolves can be of two types. The born ones who periodically tun into wolves when the time comes for it and join packs. And charmed ones. In the case of the latter they live as wolves until someone realized that they are not normal and breaks the charm.

PIE in the Sky

Over the years here on Pagan Revivalism, many folk know I am a skeptic of the pie-perennialist position. Many folk have requested for me to do an entire show dedicated to tackling this ideology, like we did in October with axiality. Most folk have never heard the other side of the argument, until now.

Join us after winter solstice, 12/25/25, as we do a full take-down of pie-perennialism. We will cover their genetics, linguistics, material culture & comparative-mythology arguments, why they're easily defeated and much more!

This will be the most controversial show we have produced, but it is also the most important. For as we revive, we need to understand our actual foundations. If those foundations are faulty & foreign, cobbled together by mashing different religions together into a hypothetical ur-religion, we set ourselves up for failure.

This is a show you will not want to miss, as we break-down and take-down the pie, a new-age revisionist cult, only here at Pagan Revivalism channel.

And first, while they were yet in the city, the generals sent as a herald to Sparta Phidippides, an Athenian, and one, moreover, that was a runner of long distances and made that his calling. This man, as he said himself and told the Athenians, when he was in the Parthenian hills above Tegea, met with Pan; who, calling to Phidippides by name, bade him say to the Athenians, "Why is it that ye take no thought for me, that am your friend, and ere now have oft been serviceable to you, and will be so again?" This story the Athenians believed to be true, and when their state won to prosperity they founded a temple of Pan beneath the acropolis, and for that message sought the god's favour with yearly sacrifices and torch-races.

It is said that in this battle two men on horseback, far excelling in both beauty and stature those our human stock produces, and just growing their first beard, appeared to Postumius, the dictator, and to those arrayed about him, and charged at the head of the Roman horse, striking with their spears all the Latins they encountered and driving them headlong before them. And after the flight of the Latins and the capture of their camp, the battle having come to an end in the late afternoon, two youths are said to have appeared in the same manner in the Roman Forum attired in military garb, very tall and beautiful and of the same age, themselves retaining on their countenances as having come from a battle, the look of combatants, and the horses they led being all in a sweat.
