Benedict, son of Oberon and Cymnea, one of the eldest of the princes is clearly inspired by Tyr and Nuadu. He also lacks a hand and is the master of of war.

"Although he is inconvenienced by the loss of his arm, I would not wish to fight with him either with weapons or barehanded. It is fortunate that he has no designs upon the throne, or he would be occupying it right now. If he were, I believe that I would give up at this moment and pay him homage. I fear Benedict."

Another major element of Guns of Avalon is the invasion of sinister powers from beyond. First time Corwin encounters them in a world called Lorraine where those powers come from the black circle which began as a fairy ring. The latter is well-known in folklore as a place of magic, as well as both good and bad luck depending on the story.

Avalon itself is mentioned many times, even though it’s not really where the story takes place. Of course Avalon is also taken from Arthurian cycle or rather Celtic myth where it was an island where dead heroes rest similar to the Land of the Eternal Youth (Tir na Nog) from Irish mythology and Hellenic Elysium.

Visiting forests benefits health

Japan coined a term shinrin-yoku ("forest bathing", "taking in the forest atmosphere") after they discovered that there are many health benefits one receives after only a couple of hours in a forest.

But the concept itself is neither new, nor purely Japanese. Aryans have long recognized the importance of the forest and created countless sacred groves.

There isn’t that much to analyze in this fairy tale other than mentioning that all the magical techniques used in it are taken directly from folklore. I already wrote on shepherd magic before, as well as other male professions associated with mystic powers.

The young man asked:
-How are you going to start a farm with only one hare?
At first the princess didn’t know what to say, but then told him they already had a doe.
The shepherd understood that it was a trick, but gave her the cutest hare of the herd anyway and wished her luck on her way home.

One of the evil being from the black circle is a demon called Strygalldwir. The latter attacks Corwin at one point and before the battle they have a little chat during which Corwin says: Misli, gammi gra'dil, Strygalldwir,

This language is Shelta Thari, an esoteric speech of travelling tinkers of Britain. The phrase is translated as: "Be off, and bad luck to you, Strygalldwir".

The Guns of Avalon picks up right where the Nine Princes left off. The main hero, prince Corwin recovers and travels to the world of chivalry and magic inspired by Arthurian legends and Medieval literature. There he meets a courageous knight Lance and his old enemy Ganelon. The former is of course a reference to sir Lancelot and the latter is taken from The Song of Roland since he too betrayed his lord (Corwin himself).

We must realize that as indigenous people we have certain needs, rights, sand interests and that it is natural for us to defend these. Like every other group, we have our own problems that we must overcome. Our teenage boys have the highest suicide rate of any group in the United States. Our teen girls have the lowest self—esteem in the nation. We are the only group against whom discrimination is often mandated by law. Any form of group self-interest on our part is greeted with ridicule or by suspicion. Our population, worldwide, is in free-fall—we are so materialistic, so separated from our ancestors, that many of us have no interest in the continuation of our people. All these things indicate spiritual sickness of a vey serious degree, and only a return to the life-affirming ways of our people can cure us.

Rites we performed to Béowa and Béole have been rewarded with a crop of honey in return. We should get around 45-50 jars from this harvest.

As a thank you and way to honour Béole we always allow our front garden to grow wild, which attracts all kinds of insects and small mammals (mice and shrews mostly), birds and bats, and provides plenty of forging for bees.

Anyone interested in pagan lore regarding bees will find this video from Survive the Jive worth watching.
