A place for Aryan (European) Folkish Pagans

Читать полностью…To sum up, it’s clear why the tale of Dobrynia and the Dragon is so popular since it has a perfect mix of traditional and original elements which makes it an exciting read/listen.
Читать полностью…The second half of the tale happens after a timeskip. Despite the plot itself being a bit more interesting due to the secret nest reveal at the end it’s still a classic story of a hero killing the dragon and saving the princess. Tales like this never went out of fashion and were some of the fist ones humans shared with each other.
Читать полностью…Some would claim that unlike the primordial Chaos serpent the dragon of this tale is winged and can breath fire which seemingly doesn’t the aquatic nature of the archetype.
But we have to consider that the dragon fights Dobrynia in the river. Their second battle is in the deep mountain caves. Plenty of water in both cases. Plus, only the first part of the tale has remnants of the cosmic myth anyway.
The first part of the tale provides a more interesting material for analysis.
Dobrynia has a somewhat unique childhood. His father is old and dies before the boy grows up. His widow takes good care of the child, in fact Dobrynia is a rather unique character for folk tales since he didn’t grow up in a poor family and got proper education. Can both read and write which wasn’t as common back then.
Analysis of the tale of Dobrynia and the Dragon of the mountain
Out of all Slavic epic songs this is one of the most complicated, despite the simplicity of the plot.
The reason for the complexity is that it combines ancient and more modern elements which is not that rare, but said elements themselves are rather peculiar.
Dobrynia returns with rescued princess.

Читать полностью…The traditional tale of saving the princess is all about the said princess, but in this story we have Dobrynia rescuing countless other people from the dragon’s offsprings which elevates him as a national hero.
Читать полностью…The first battle was to be the last with the hero just killed the dragon, but later the plot expended and we got the serpent’s oath and Dobrynia sparing it’s life.
This made the tale more unique, but also created an inner contradiction. In their first battle Dobrynia wins quickly despite being literally naked and outside of his element and then, in the second half, they fight for hours (days in other versions) despite the hero being fully armed this time and standing on solid ground.
Even though I am usually against trying to find remnants of the myth in the folk tales this is a rare exception since here the traces of the cosmic Chaoskampf are too obvious to ignore.
In the river encounter Dobrynia takes the place of Perun while the dragon of the mountain is a stand-in for the primordial Chaos serpent. The use of club (or some other blunt object) is also noteworthy.
Those who read/heard the tale will agree that it can be split in two parts both culminating in Dobrynia defeating the dragon, but despite featuring the same hero and villain those two halves are very different.
