Can’t say I don’t find spiders creepy, but folklore is very inconsistent when it comes to them presenting spiders as both benign and malignant creatures. Some say that killing spiders is good and those who do get their sins pardoned. On the other hand, there’s a belief that to kill a spider is to kill your own happiness. Proverbs go as far as to claim that a spider created the world or compare a spider to God. Lore also sees spiders as mediators between heaven and earth. I recommend reading Gura on the topic. If you wonder what I’m wearing. It’s a copy of a XI-XII miniature axe pendant from a burial mound. Today such pendants are seen as a Slavic Pagan accessory, but originally this was not the case. Such axes were mostly placed at the right hip possibly as a representation of and/or replacement for a real weapon. But the theory of them being a votive offering is not the only one. The axes are likely to have been for the living. Their function either protective or just decorative. They have been in use after christianization, so the axes were not religious and not associated with Perun whose weapons are a club and a bow.

A Germanic flag with Odin, Thor and Freyr would be a good idea. Slavic one with Weles, Perun and Dazbog (or Jarilo) could be nice too. Here’s my attempt at editing one. Of course it would have to be a more simplistic depiction of the Gods, but I don’t want to use AI to make one. If you are an artist though, here’s a flag with three major Gods of your people’s tradition is a nice challenge.

Ironically Greeks were closer to the Western world, even though back then the latter was pretty different. After all Trojans are the ones who had allies from southwest Asia and Africa. They were definitely closer to Orient than the Occident. For example, Memnon led a whole army of Indians and Aethiopians to defend Troy. Amazons were seen as an Asiatic nation too.

But Spencer probably never even read the book. It’s really easy to be a right wing shill these days. Just say you don’t like gays and non-Whites and voila there’s an army of teens who will parrot your every word.

Overall a fine translation of the ballad mentioned above. The only issue I have with it is a rather odd decision to leave pobratim untranslated. Maybe it was transliterated for the sake of the rhyme, but the word just means battle brother. One of the few ancient words important enough to exist in multiple Slavic languages.

One day he found a vila's lost children and helped them. As a reward she suckled him three times, and he could lift and throw a huge stone. In another legend, Marko’s mother was a vila.

A lesson from folklore

While honorable conduct is pivotal to any traditional society, our forefathers understood that there’s a big difference between a fair fight with your kinfolk and killing outsiders. In Slavic epic songs the heroes sometimes end up fighting each other for one reason or another ranging from a simple misunderstanding to a contest of strength. When they do there’s always a set of rules and the duel often ends in the two becoming friends. Meanwhile when fighting foreign enemies there’s no rules. For example, Alesha used a trick to behead Tugarin the Dragon. It’s not okay to trick your own, but with foreign enemies it’s fine to do whatever it takes to win. You must be one of us for our codes to apply.

Ganges river is a perfect example of how pseudo-spirituality treats sacred sites. The recent post about Latvian Svete Sanctuary getting desecrated by Japanese tourists led to the discussion on how Pagans should treat their holy sites. The matter is very clear. A tourist attraction with hundreds of visitors each week, regardless of those people’s piety, can’t be a proper holy site. If only a handful of chosen worshippers were allowed to dip in Ganges it would still be clean. But it’s the dirties river in the world because it’s one of the few sites making India billions in revenue.

Legendary Prussian king Waidewut (Widewuto) reportedly had a white flag depicting three major deities old Peckols the God of the Underworld, Perkunas the God of Thunder and young Potrimpo the God of Fertility depicted with a wreath of grain. Proto-Indo-European New Age and christianity

PIE perennial movement is one of many New Age pseudo-religions. What makes it more harmful than most is insistence on being Pagan thus redefining the term. With anti-fundamentalist approach to myth and use of ancient atheistic teachings (e.g. platonism) perennialists are creating a new global religion with superficial elements of Paganism such as names of Pagan Gods as well as the use of symbols like swastika and runes. Their attempt to replace old localized religions with a new, global one is just what christians did. Trying to populate the new religion preachers localized Jesus which led to many different flavors of one messiah. Perennialists use the same tactic to spread their New Age creed by presenting Gods as archetypes such as Sky Father and Thunderer. Christians split one universal Jesus, PIE theory combines many local Gods. The result is the same.

Later in life Marko fought a vila (nymph) after one killed his friend Milos who was a great bard and whose singing voice made the vila envious. She took her bow and shoot two arrows at Milos, but Marko chased the nymph on his loyal steed Sharatz and beat her with his signature golden mace until the vila pleaded for mercy and promised to bring Milos back to life with magical herbs. Marko let her go and the nymph did as the had promised. The tale became a ballad. Sadly, the author is not known.
