May
May be
Probably
Possibly
Patron saint of almost
All-most
Still
Some left
May-be-er
I wonder
What would have been
of us
May came and went silently
It didn't "be"
Another year
Another May
Another Maybe
Mistaken for destiny

Let loose, they say.
Like my gatekeepers would cut me some slack.
Like this brain of mine would give me space.
They told me I should let go.
I wanted to come clean about the dozens of tabs left opened for months on my browser.
I wanted to tell them how I avoid shutting down my computer,
I fear closing those tabs.
What if I need them again?
Instead, I let my computer sleep.
And I sleep
on piles of unclosed chapters
of my life.
I am bound to the what-ifs.
Certainty rarely visits
and it never stays long enough
to bail me out.
It’s like my brain and my gut
are anastomosed by a tight knot.
And my heart is having this watershed area,
vessels feeding a non-healing, non-dying, stubborn penumbra.
Blood in my arteries.
Suffering in vain.
From my head to my ankle,
Circulation without a circle.

[ 🗓️ February 🗓️ ]
Perfect like February
Perfect like the colour of your eyes
Perfect like twenty eight
Perfect like the curve of your smile
28,
Late for the twenties,
And yet right on time for “now”
Just a little fewer than usual,
a little “full”-er than normal
Not more
Not less
Just enough
It is like February
From the time I meet you
to the time we meet again
Even like the days I see you,
Odd like the days I miss you
It is like time is ironed
and now it's wrinkle-free
...Perfect like February

[One Out of One]
1/1
I don’t mean to be unkind,
but hear me out.
You’re not one in a million for me.
I don’t even know a million people,
to be honest.
Not even close.
You could be two in a million,
ten in a million,
a thousand in a million,
or even a million in a million,
for what it’s worth.
It wouldn't matter.
That’s the thing about it,
Value is not a function of rarity.
That’s for jewellery merchants,
or those hunting for collectable items.
I’m not one of them.
I’m just a random person,
and you are mine.
And that, for me,
is one out of one.
Flipping the statistics,
more than a probability,
...a forever thing,
a certainty!

I am a grain of sand;
An eternal promise.
A foreshadow in the universe.
I am my brother’s keeper,
His punching bag when he is tired,
I am my sister’s entertainment late at night;
My twin’s other half,
At my best,
I am the smile on my mother’s face.
I am social justice and liberation,
I am the melanin that flows from the farms,
The green that feeds the world.
The word that saved a life,
I am the birth of a new nation,
Of new hope,
The star to end all wars;
At my best I change the world.
I am the messenger they forget to shoot,
Love’s flawed imitation,
Music played off key,
Awkward hugs of support,
Silence in solidarity.
I am the soldier’s worth,
My father’s pride,
At my best,
I am a worthy heir of my ancestors’ dream.
***
I am the devil’s pawn.
Killer of laughter,
My brother’s murderer,
A waste of labor,
A shadow of civilization,
At my worst,
I eviscerate everything I touch.
I am Moses’ stutter;
Abraham’s doubt,
Gideon’s fear.
I am a cautionary tale,
A miscalculation in the universe;
An anomaly undeserved of life,
A trader of love,
A barterer of faith and virtue,
At my worst I kiss Christ on a Thursday.
I am fear.
I am cowardice.
I am the comfortable caterpillar.
I am greed; I am eternal hunger.
I am extortion personified.
I am potential unbothered.
I am peace undisturbed.
I am a soldier in a spa.
I am a father to doppelgängers;
I perform genocide on a generation.
At my worst,
I live in certainty in wonder of possibilities.
At my worst,
I write poems under a money tree.
At my worst,
I live in a closet full of clothes digging for warmth.
At my worst,
I drown in the nile thirsty.
At my worst,
I laugh without a smile.
At my worst,
I live unburnt.
At my worst,
I gain the world with its applause.
At my worst,
I live life in pink.
At my worst,
At my very worst,
I am my mother’s face in blue.

Some of you may know that I have been running this channel for seven years now. Yes, seven solid years and I am deeply grateful for it.
Some of you have been here since the very beginning. Others joined along the way. Either way, I appreciate every one of you for being part of this little corner we built together.
Seven years feels like the right moment to turn a page.
I have started sharing my poems on Substack. Both the old and the new. Some older pieces that were lost in the cracks of time, and new ones finding their voice.
If you enjoy the words we share here, subscribe and join me there as well. Think of it as an extension of this family.
And who knows… this might just be the warm-up for something even bigger (😉😉)

[On the Days He has It Together]
He thinks some days are the ideal days to die
to pass away,
to leave it all behind.
Those days he has called his parents
and shared a few laughs with his siblings and friends.
Those days he has showered with his cedarwood body wash,
worn his favourite sandalwood cologne,
put on his dark blue collared shirt and black pants.
Those days his apartment is clean and tidy, laundry done,
clothes ironed and folded.
Those days his shelf is organised,
the dishwasher is empty,
the trash taken out.
Those days he has read his Bible
and prayed in the morning.
Those days he has it all together.
To him, those days feel like the ideal days to die,
or maybe the ideal nights
to leave all this behind.
He watches the doorstep all day
as if waiting for a visit
from a loved one,
for death to come by.
But when death does not arrive,
after all that waiting,
and night finally falls,
he puts on fresh pyjamas,
slips into clean bedsheets,
and whispers,
“O death, where is your sting?
O death, where is your victory?”
[Hapologia]
The fundamentals in life
are more mental than being fun.
Who would have thought the late twenties
meant to be this revelatory.
There is a blind spot
that scars my vision board.
My mental map deviates,
finding loopholes that only lead
back to that blind spot.
Maybe my myopia is metaphysical.
I’ve lived life as an underdog
but never owned a puppy.
I love animals, though.
(I often think of petting
a baby elephant and
a baby giraffe.)
Sometimes I am lazy in my bones.
I drink coffee straight from the thermos,
too spent to lift a mug.
No peculiar mission
No burning passion.
Nothing cinematic
About the way I carry on
I love hiking.
And if there has ever been a hill
I am willing to die on,
it must be Golgotha.

Friday
[Unscripted]
Roses are red,
Violets are violet.
I am not gonna lie
Just to make it rhyme.
My love isn’t bright;
It doesn’t bloom in primary colors.
Not in radiant reds, not in easy blues.
Not the catchy type,
Like a high without the hype
My heartbeat slips from its pace,
A rhythm lost in time and space.
It beats in confusion,
Irregularly irregular,
Messy and unconventional.
And yet, it is love.
This I know.
A Smoky Gray kind of love,
With an arrhythmic heart.
This is what I have,
This is all I’ve got.
Roses are red,
Violets aren’t blue.
In its own colorless, chaotic way,
There goes my love for you
Unpredictable and unrefined,
But undeniably true.

[The Art of Unintentional]
You’ve helped me.
How, you ask?
Like slapping a glitchy device
and suddenly, it starts to work.
You did something right,
though neither of us knows quite how.
Does that count as a win? you wonder.
Sometimes, it’s not about the how.
Just take the win and let it go.
You’ve accidentally mended me,
and for that, I thank you
more than you’ll ever know.

[At Peace]
She auditions her hopes and triages her fears,
saying, "I've got to get a grip on me,
held in check by reality."
She tries to hold onto this life tightly,
but just when she thinks her grasp is firm,
it slips through her fingers
like a handful of water... spilling.
And right when she feels like giving up,
she notices a tiny green plant blooming beneath her hands,
nurtured by the dripping water in silence.
Accidental hope strikes;
she gives God the credit.
She is no master of dart or arrow games,
but somehow, she has become the Queen of long shots.
Hey, royalty is here!
She has stopped wrestling with her insecurities daily.
Instead, she has appointed around the clock guards for them,
keeping her insecurities secure.
This is how she has made peace with her shortcomings;
this is how she pursues her far-goings.

[Leveled]
Yes, I have noticed that I have stopped going out of my way for you.
I don't even wait for you on my way anymore.
I just walk down my lane at my own pace
and hope for our paths to briefly catch up every now and then.
No, I don't hate you now;
I just love you less.
And even when I love you less,
you still remain the one I love most.
So here is #onefortheShadows.
And here is #onefortheEchoes.
@as_hannah_thinks
[Some Times]
Some blues can't be fixed with strong espressos.
Some anxieties in your tummy linger, even after comfort food and warm milk.
Some glooms can't just be switched back by having days off.
You may take a good nap,
only to wake up to your doom
standing by your nightstand, waiting impatiently for reunion.
Some soul fatigues don’t relent to a change of scenery,
or retreating to nature for solitude.
Your loved ones’ heartfelt presence,
may not be enough to keep you standing tall.
Even after fervent prayers,
you may still feel weak in the knees.
Some sadness is like that.
Some grief is just that adamant.
Some emptiness is that stubborn.
Sometimes, moments unfold like this, an unsettling afternoon that endures.
Some stretch into days, weeks, maybe months, maybe years.
Some sometimes are just not 'some' of the times.
They don’t yield to time’s mercy,
to faith, to loved ones' embrace,
or your best self.
And it is okay.
This is life.
We are all foot soldiers in this battle.
You are not the only one;
you are not alone.
@as_hannah_thinks
[New Day, Old Me]
Something thrilling happened today,
But you weren't the first I thought to share it with.
Strange.
In fact, no one came to mind at all—
Just like it used to be,
Before our paths intertwined.
It feels odd,
Almost wrong,
But chill; I haven't yet decided if I like it.
@as_hannah_thinks
[🔵]Something Blue[ 🔵]
Like flagbearers raising their homelands' flags at the Olympic opening,
So do I observe strangers from afar, their flags waving.
Minimizing surprises, taking careful heed,
Just gauging the vibes before taking a blind stride.
Different people, yet not so different in their flags—
Many reds... a few greens
And then I saw you waving a blue one.
Well, that was unusual.
Not a red flag for warnings,
Nor a green flag that cheers,
But a blue flag—
Blue like the wide sky, embracing and free,
Blue like the ocean, deep as can be,
Blue like calmness, unhurried,
Blue like gentle, endearing.
I saw you with the blue flag,
And in that moment, I knew you were my homeland,
So on the day we stand at the altar,
I will be that "something old,"
The woman who has waited for you for as long as that long.
And together, we will be that "something new."
Our days ahead will be the "something borrowed,"
And you already know what the "something blue" is gonna be—
