You can't, shadow softness/contrast comes from the size of light source. You can't control the size of light source in a HDRi. Only brightness.

Use sun instead... You can use the HDRi just as a background if you want that exact sky.

This HDR lighting does amazing for my work but I want to be able to control the hard shadows. Tried using colour correction in material editor but it's not helping

Increase the resolution of the image to 1000px accordingly to your aspect ratio of the render frame

That's a common crash report dialogue. Comes up when max crashes any time for any reason.

There are many reasons to crash during render. Mostly out of RAM..

The resolution is 250*300 pixels. What do you expect.

Check the VFB/IPR settings to use resolution based on VFB size..
