FOREWORD
The three-volume Ethiopia in Broader Perspective will accompany the
NIlth International Conference of Ethiopian Studies (ICES) to be held in Kyoto,
12-17 December 1997. 'The 158 ossays collected here well represent the current
trends and standards of Ethiopian studies in various fields- humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Ethiopia has fascinated many scholars for centures and there is no doubt that Ethiopian studies are uique and distinct genre; they have their own raison dêtre, In these volumes we present a number of essays constituting the 'core' of Ethiopian studies, namely those in history, art and Ethio-Semitic linguistics, and we can see that this core continues to grow.
We believe, however, that efforts to set and re-evaluate Ethiopia and Ethiopian studies mn a broader perspective historically, regionally and theoretically-will be challenging and fruitfal. A broader approach is testified by many essays in this collection for instance, those dealing with peripheral peoples and regions and those arguing Ethiopian issues in a comparative perspective.
There are also essays that examine the previous regime of Derg and that of the
Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia toprcs of contemporary relevance which will be developed in future. We are also pleased to introduce natural science studies; these have not been an integral part of the previous conferences. The NIlth ICES will be the first of its kind to be held in East Asia. It is therefore meaningful to have essays on Japan- Ethiopia relations.
Finally, we genuinely hope that this three-volume book will be a valuable stimulus for the future development of Ethiopian studies

Partly basing his play on traditional Ethiopian sources, the author develops the theme of the overwhelming power of fear in the old conflict between superstition and reason in a terse and ritualistic style eminently suited to his story:
Ukutee, betrothed to Shanka 'the strong son of the tribe', is under a curse interpreted by the oracle of the sacred Oda Oak to mean that her first-born son should be sacrificed to the ancestral spirits. Shanka has not dared to consummate the marriage and is thereby guilty of defiance. His friend Goaa who has come into contact with more enlightened thinking, promises to approach the oracle again in an effort to rescind the judgement and to prove the strength of his new wisdom. He prevaricates through fear, and takes Ukutee for himself, becoming the father of her child.
The conflicts this situation arouses mount in tension throughout the play, culminating in a powerfully dramatic last scene, where Ukutee (herself now freed frora superstitious fear by the impending birth of her child), Slanka and Gosa (both guilty of fear), and the tribal elders, con- front the oracle of the Oda Oak under lowering sky which threatens the thunder to come.
