Bahir Dar University and IMPACT Initiatives/REACH Explore Partnership Opportunities
Bahir Dar, August 27, 2026
BDU hosted an introductory meeting with a delegation from IMPACT Initiatives/REACH to explore partnership opportunities, with a particular focus on evidence-based research and data collection in the Amhara region.
The meeting opened with a welcome address by Dr. Manendante Mulugeta, Director of External Relations and Partnerships at BDU, who provided an overview of the University for the visiting delegation. Following his remarks, Eleni Dawit, Projects and Partnerships Support Officer at IMPACT Initiatives/REACH, presented an overview of IMPACT Initiatives and its REACH initiative.
Laura Harrison, Country Representative for IMPACT Initiatives/REACH, expressed her delight in visiting Bahir Dar University, describing it as one of Ethiopia’s established public universities with a strong academic and research profile spanning a wide range of disciplines and an extensive portfolio of local and international partnerships. She also reflected on IMPACT Initiatives/REACH’s broader mission of improving decision-making by aid actors in crisis contexts, explaining that in Ethiopia, REACH’s work includes multi-sector assessments, cash and markets assessments, rapid needs assessments, nutrition and public health assessments, climate risk assessments, and humanitarian situation monitoring. She went on to propose several possible areas of collaboration, including harmonizing research approaches, jointly developing project proposals, coordinating through national and regional networks, engaging government stakeholders, and exploring short-term staff exchanges, and reflected at length on how the partnership could support improved data collection and access in the Amhara region.
In his remarks, Dr. Mengesha Ayene, President of Bahir Dar University, warmly thanked the IMPACT Initiatives/REACH delegation for visiting and for taking the initiative to explore collaboration with the University. He described the timing of the discussion as significant and stressed the importance of identifying areas of mutual interest in light of the current dynamics in the region. He welcomed further clarity on the specific areas where BDU and IMPACT Initiatives/REACH could combine their strengths, and he highlighted joint proposals and research alignment, capacity building and operations, and the formalization of next steps as priority areas for the partnership going forward.
Following these remarks, participants and delegates from both institutions engaged in an open discussion, reflecting on which areas of collaboration hold the strongest potential, how the two institutions should coordinate their work, and what framework and process would best serve to formalize and operationalize a future partnership.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to continuing the conversation and working together to define concrete next steps toward a formal partnership between Bahir Dar University and IMPACT Initiatives/REACH.
Ethiopian Students Shine at GFSSM 2026, Securing Second Place
Four Ethiopian students. An international team of Eight countries. Five days of intense competition. And a remarkable second-place finish.
From August 13–17, the Global Future Space Scholars Meet (GFSSM) brought together talented young minds from eight countries for an ambitious five-day challenge focused on the future of human civilization in space. Among them were four students from BDU STEM Incubation Center — Nahom Ziyn, Natnael Belete, Nobel Desalegn, and Yohanan Daniel — who proudly represented Ethiopia as members of the international company Helio Energy.
With 38 members from different countries, Helio Energy quickly distinguished itself through its creativity, energy, resilience, communication, facilitation, and exceptional teamwork. Led by Company President Nahom Ziyn, the team faced the demanding task of bringing together ideas from dozens of different minds and transforming them into a unified and compelling vision — all within a remarkably short period of time.
From the early stages of the competition, the Ethiopian students made a strong impression on their teammates. Their arrival was described by fellow members as bringing a renewed sense of hope, creativity, resilience, and energy, strengthening the team's belief that Helio Energy had a genuine chance of reaching the top.
That belief ultimately translated into an outstanding performance. Helio Energy delivered a strong proposal, demonstrated effective communication and facilitation, and maintained remarkable team cohesion throughout the competition, earning Second Place overall at GFSSM 2026.
The achievement was further highlighted during the final company bidding speeches, where Ethiopian representation became a particularly memorable moment. The four Ethiopian students stood before the international audience in beautiful Ethiopian cultural dress, proudly carrying their country's identity onto the global stage.
The final presentations brought additional recognition to the team, with Nahom Ziyn and Natnael Belete receiving awards for their brilliant final presentation speeches, further demonstrating the strength of Helio Energy's communication and presentation skills.
The achievement is a remarkable milestone for the four Ethiopian students, who are currently studying at STEM Incubation Center and are preparing to enter Grade 12 in September. More importantly, it reflects the strength of an international team that successfully transformed diverse perspectives into one shared vision.
The Ethiopian students extend their deepest regards and appreciation to the entire Helio Energy team for the dedication, trust, and teamwork that made this achievement possible, as well as to their team leader, Dr. Alemu Tesfaye, whose leadership and support played an important role in making this remarkable experience possible.
From eight countries to one united team, Helio Energy proved that great ideas become even greater when different minds work together.
Congratulations to Helio Energy on an outstanding Second Place finish at GFSSM 2026
Alumni Memories: Dr. Theodros Atlabachew!
Dr. Theodros Atlabachew joined the Former Polytechnic Institute’s (PTI) Metal Technology department in 1964 E.C. He joined the department completing his studies at Weizero Siheen comprehensive high school. Following his graduation from PTI, he joined Ethiopian Airlines as a junior mechanic. Aspirations to continue his study lead him to quit his job after a year and join University of Economics-Varna where he specialized in Economics and Tourism study at M.A & PhD levels.
Following the completion of his study and leaving his lucrative job at BBC, he returned back to his country and served for decades in Tourism Commission under the request of the then commissioner, Fisseha Geda.
Dr. Theodros has a fat CV showing his versatile role as a leader and volunteer; project developer and supervisor; consultant and manager of business and public enterprises; researcher and lecturer; elected board member and president of various heritage, professional and business organizations etc. This helped him particularly to put his own imprint in the tourism and hospitality industry of the country.
Dr. Theodros believes that the quality technical education he received from the former PolyTechnic Institute (BiT-BDU) together with his PG studies at Varna helped him to have a life-long success in his professional life.
Currently, he is the secretary of Poly-BDU alumni association and its founding member. Such spirited initiative in the alumni association might have been powered by his active engagement in extracurricular activities during his student years at PTI like playing as a guitarist in the “Moon rock” band, representing his department in soccer team, enjoying rowing "Tankwa" & fishing at Lake Tana on weekends and being a regular attendant of movies at Bahir Dar city hall.
Other than these, studying at the then small, beautiful and neat Bahir Dar city helped him to instill in himself a sense of integrity watching the city's dwellers defining traits of fear of God, kindness, fidelity and compassion.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr. Mengesha Ayene, President of Bahir Dar University, thanked Partners in Education Ethiopia for its continued partnership with the University and underscored BDU's strong interest and commitment in the areas Mr. Yehalem had outlined. He shared University-driven proposals, including work around a rural corridor concept centered on initiatives that are visible, replicable, and scalable, and where partner organizations could contribute meaningfully. On foundational literacy and numeracy, he noted that BDU is working with various partners to build strong numerical and literacy skills among children, and, in the age of artificial intelligence, technology, and innovation, raised the question of how mathematics should be taught, pointing to the University's ongoing Math Camp initiative and its interest in extending the program to lower grade levels through community networks. He observed that BDU has the human resources, skilled professionals, and curriculum development capacity needed to advance this work, though financial constraints remain an area where continued collaboration with PiEE and other partners will be essential.
Dr. Mengesha also spoke about a planned Summer Society initiative targeting STEM graduates, who would return for six months of intensive training to prepare them for opportunities in the global job market, with the University aiming to establish, by 2019 E.C., an institution capable of producing digital products through this initiative, and expressed BDU's readiness to work with partner organizations, including PiEE, on this effort. On education, he noted that BDU's College of Education is already working extensively with partners on primary- and secondary-level projects aligned with PiEE's programming, and reaffirmed the University's continued readiness to deepen this engagement. On health, he commended PiEE's role in raising the profile of BDU's hospital and noted that, given the human resources available at Tibebe Ghion Specialized Hospital, there is an opportunity to create additional space and capacity through partner-supported resources and networks, affirming BDU's readiness to continue working in the health sector. On early childhood development, he praised PiEE's attention to this often-overlooked but critical area, noting that BDU is already engaged with various partners on related work, including baseline surveys, joint workshops, and policy development. He concluded by stressing that these educational priorities are fundamental issues that BDU must and will continue to address with strong commitment.
The renewed Memorandum of Understanding reflects the shared vision of Bahir Dar University and Partners in Education Ethiopia to advance educational quality, health, and wellbeing outcomes for disadvantaged children and youth in the Amhara Region, and will serve as a platform for deepening this partnership across the University in the years ahead.

Among the key strategic collaboration areas identified, both sides agreed to operationalize the BDU–Donghua University “Overseas College of Excellence in Engineering,” with BDU proposing that the Embassy help match the partnership with Chinese government funding streams under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) education pillar or the Belt and Road Initiative's human-resource development window. They also proposed a joint PhD supervision program in textile material science and water resources engineering, and agreed to advocate for a dedicated annual quota of CSC scholarships and Friendship Scholarships for BDU, targeting PhD candidates in textile and fashion engineering, water resources, agricultural economics, renewable energy and nuclear engineering, artificial intelligence, and data sciences; faculty exchange through three-to-six-month visiting professorships for BDU's Institute of Technology and the Ethiopian Institute of Textile and Fashion Technology (EiTEX); and short-term technical training of one to three months for laboratory technicians and industry liaison staff.
Following the discussion, the delegation toured the University's data center and the EiTEX, where members were introduced to BDU's achievements in textile innovation, applied research, and industry linkage. The visit concluded with both sides affirming a clear and shared direction for translating today's discussions into concrete joint action, reinforcing Bahir Dar University's standing as one of China's primary academic partners in Ethiopia and paving the way for a stronger, more actionable partnership in the years ahead.

Bahir Dar University and Partners in Education Ethiopia Renew Memorandum of Understanding to Expand University-Wide Collaboration
Bahir Dar University (BDU) and Partners in Education Ethiopia (PiEE) have renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), reaffirming and expanding a partnership that has spanned nearly a decade and improved the learning, health, and wellbeing outcomes of children and youth across the Amhara National Regional State. The agreement, signed during a ceremony held at Bahir Dar University today, August 13, 2026, aims to create synergy across key areas of collaboration, including upgrading school facilities, improving the quality of instruction, addressing learning and teaching resource inequality, enhancing hands-on and experiential learning, closing learning achievement gaps through digital education, improving the learning environment through water, sanitation, and hygiene, enhancing students' health and wellbeing outcomes, and strengthening learning, health, and wellbeing through evidence-based assessment and action research.
Opening the ceremony, Dr. Zewdu Emiru, Vice President for Information and Strategic Communication at Bahir Dar University, welcomed guests and reflected on the depth of the relationship between the two institutions. He noted that since 2010 E.C., BDU and PiEE have jointly worked on the construction of educational institutions, teacher capacity building, eye health services, and youth job-readiness training, bringing about sustainable and tangible change. He emphasized that the newly signed agreement extends this collaboration beyond the college level to encompass the entire University, strengthening joint efforts in educational quality, health, safety, and community-focused research, and elevating the partnership to a higher level that reinforces the two institutions' shared vision.
Speaking on behalf of Partners in Education Ethiopia, Executive Director Mr. Yehalem Abebe reaffirmed the organization's long-standing commitment to the partnership, recalling that since 2017, PiEE and BDU have collaborated on numerous projects to improve learning, health, and wellbeing outcomes for disadvantaged children and youth in the region. Among the achievements realized through this collaboration are the construction and furnishing of three full primary schools, the supply of furniture to additional schools, training for more than 130 teachers in science, English, and inclusive pedagogy, and scholarship support for 59 teachers pursuing first and second degrees based on their impact on student learning. The partnership has also transformed school compounds into green outdoor classrooms and educational gardens across 20 schools, established eight vision centers in public hospitals, including at Tibebe Ghion Specialized Hospital, and provided vision screening to more than 180,000 students, staff, and community members, with over 6,000 patients receiving glasses or treatment support. Mr. Yehalem further expressed PiEE's interest in deepening collaboration with BDU in the area of educational quality, particularly around school readiness, focusing on physical growth, cognitive development, language development, and social development.

Bahir Dar University Hosts Chinese Embassy Delegation: Strategic Dialogue Charts New Course for Sino-Ethiopian Academic Partnership
Bahir Dar University (BDU) had the pleasure of hosting a high-level delegation from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Ethiopia, led by Mr. Sun Mingxi, Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM), for a strategic dialogue and working visit with the University's team, led by its President, Dr. Mengesha Ayene. The seven-member delegation's visit highlighted the depth and dynamism of the growing partnership between BDU and its Chinese academic and institutional partners.
Welcoming the delegation, Dr. Mengesha Ayene remarked that the visit would open new horizons in joint research centers, technology transfer, staff mobility, and cultural exchange, further reinforcing the University's longstanding relationship with its Chinese partners. He noted that the visit carried great significance both for strengthening BDU's already established partnerships with Chinese institutions and for connecting the University with new ones.
The discussion, led by Dr. Mengesha, centered on several strategic pillars for deepening collaboration. Beginning with research and innovation, he proposed a joint innovation center for sustainable agriculture and water resource management, drawing on BDU's position within the Lake Tana and Blue Nile basin, and highlighted cooperation in the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and engineering-focused technical education. On academic mobility and capacity building, BDU proposed a sandwich PhD co-supervision model alongside short-term technical training placements in China for faculty and technical staff facilitated through the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC). Dr. Mengesha underscored BDU's existing industry-collaboration model in textile and fashion technology with Donghua University as an example of the partnership model the University hopes to extend.
Turning to cultural and people-to-people ties, which he described as a human bridge between the two sides, Dr. Mengesha proposed the establishment of a Confucius Classroom or Chinese Language Center at BDU. He requested the Embassy's support in facilitating best-practice exchange with Ethiopian institutions that already host Confucius Classrooms, along with the provision of Chinese-language teachers, and noted the Embassy's continued role in linking BDU with relevant Chinese institutions. On partnership mechanisms, he noted that BDU currently maintains active collaboration with 13 Chinese institutions and organizations, as well as cooperation under the China-Ethiopia Inter-Governmental Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation program. He welcomed the Embassy's continued role in connecting BDU with additional Chinese institutions and affirmed the University's readiness to draft a joint implementation roadmap with the Embassy's education section.
For his part, Mr. Sun Mingxi briefed the University on key national-level frameworks shaping cooperation, including a newly signed five-year Ethiopia-China agreement integrating Chinese language education into the national curriculum, and a bilateral memorandum of understanding on digital transformation advancing fiber infrastructure, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and big data under the Digital Ethiopia 2030 framework. The delegation affirmed its readiness to expand access to CSC opportunities through both Embassy/bilateral and university-to-university routes, describing the CSC as a bridge for BDU to engage with more Chinese universities. Mr. Sun also noted the Embassy's commitment to facilitating visa processing for outbound Ethiopian student and scholar applicants and reiterated readiness to explore prospects for a Confucius Classroom based on the signed agreement with Ethiopia.
The Bahir Dar University Board, at its meeting held on 28 July 2026, approved the promotion of seven distinguished senior faculty members to the rank of Full Professor.
Bahir Dar University warmly congratulates the newly promoted professors on this well-deserved achievement and wishes them all continued success in advancing excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and community service.
