The early Deleuze (in his magnum opus, Difference and Repetition) develops an immanent metaphysics in which there is no place for negativity, void, or lack, based in part on the positive metaphysics of Spinoza and Nietzsche respectively. Spinoza's metaphysics (described in the Ethics) allows only relative negations in the form of partial beings which together comprise a totality which lacks nothing ("God"). Nietzsche's life-affirming philosophy denies even the existence of death, in lieu of an Eternal Recurrence of the same wherein life continues in a neverending cycle.

Deleuze does however reread both ideas from a novel viewpoint emphasizing Difference over Identity, affirming parts over wholes and varied repetitions over perfect cycles. Indeed he claims that all repetition includes a minimal difference, and that identity is impossible. Focusing on minor and heretical thinkers, and on creative interpretation over slavish amplificatory commentary, Difference and Repetition was Deleuze's reaction against the Hegelian and Heideggerian orthodoxy of the French Academy of the 1960s, which he considered a sterile scholasticism.
