🟢 Iran authorizes banks and currency exchangers to use cryptocurrencies to pay for imports

The Central Bank of Iran (CBI) has announced that banks and licensed currency exchangers can use cryptocurrency mined by licensed crypto miners in Iran to pay for imports, the Financial Tribune reported on Saturday.

In October last year, the Iranian government amended its cryptocurrency regulation to enable the country’s central bank to fund imports with bitcoin legally mined in the country. Licensed crypto miners are required to sell their coins directly to the central bank. The measure was proposed by the CBI and the Ministry of Energy.

Iran has issued over 1,000 licenses to crypto miners, including one to the Turkish bitcoin mining giant Iminer. Power plants in Iran are allowed to mine cryptocurrencies and bitcoin miners have been granted exclusive access to electricity generated from three of them. In January, Iran shut down 1,620 illegal crypto mining farms.

🟢 Nashville boutique hotel to accept cryptocurrency as payment

One of Nashville’s most popular boutique hotels is adding another option to pay for its rooms.

The Bobby Hotel announced Monday that it has become the first hotel in Nashville and one of the first independent properties in the country to accept cryptocurrency as a form of payment for overnight reservations and event bookings.

Guests of the 144-room hotel will now have the option to use Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin and stable coin for reservations and stays in Nashville as a part of the hotel’s partnership with BitPay, the world’s largest provider in cryptocurrency services, according to a news release.

🟢 Bitcoin for Babe Ruth? Sports auction house will accept crypto

On Tuesday, the sports memorabilia auction house Goldin Auctions announced that it would accept cryptocurrency, making it one of the first brick-and-mortar auction houses to follow the runaway success of auction house Christie’s, which accepted Ether for a onetime, $69 million sale earlier this month.

Goldin, which is known for high-value items, including a Lebron James rookie card that sold for $1.8 million last year, decided to accept Bitcoin and Ether based on “demand from consumers,” says Ross Hoffman, Goldin’s chief executive officer.

“Look, we think a big macro theme that we’re seeing is folks that are hedging,” he continues. “One, against inflation, and two, there’s interest in alternative investing.” Crypto currency and sports collectibles, Hoffman concludes, have “a pretty large overlap.”

A Scottish music school will begin accepting cryptocurrency for tuition payments following demand from students, it was announced this week. The Morningside School of Music in Edinburgh said it was responding to suggestions from adult pupils in the school, many of whom now work in the city’s burgeoning fintech sector.

Morningside’s director, Linda Boyd, said the school had previously used cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) to make business purchases and could see the utility in accepting it as a form of payment.

She said, “We sometimes use things like Bitcoin to pay for goods for the school, so we know how fast and easy it is and want our music students to be able to do the same.”

We already knew that PayPal was planning to support cryptocurrencies as a form of payment, and now, the online payment app announced US customers can do just that with its “Checkout with Crypto” feature, which is rolling out today.

After rolling out the ability for US users to buy and sell cryptocurrency directly from their accounts last November, PayPal’s new “Checkout with Crypto” allows users to instantly convert their Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, or Bitcoin Cash to US dollars (with no additional transaction fees) that PayPal then uses to complete the transaction. If a merchant doesn’t take US dollars, PayPal also converts those dollars into local currency at standard conversion rates set by PayPal.

KiwiSaver Growth Strategy, a $350 million retirement plan operated by New Zealand Wealth Funds Management, has reportedly allocated 5% of its assets to Bitcoin (BTC), underscoring the steady stream of institutional investors entering the digital asset space.

Bitcoin’s striking similarities to gold were cited as one of the biggest reasons for entering the trade, according to James Grigor, the chief investment officer at New Zealand Funds Management.

“If you are happy to invest in gold, you can’t really discount bitcoin,” he told Stuff, a New Zealand news agency, adding that BTC will be featured in more KiwiSaver products over the next five years.

Today, TIME will begin accepting cryptocurrency as a form of payment for digital subscriptions through a new partnership with Crypto.com.

Subscribers who elect to pay with cryptocurrency will receive unlimited access to content across TIME for 18 months with their one-time purchase, as well as subscriber-only events and offerings. Currently, purchasing a subscription through cryptocurrency is only available in the U.S. and Canada, with global access to roll out in the next several months.

🟢 Insurance giant AXA Switzerland now allows customers to pay premiums in bitcoin

Announcing the news on Thursday, AXA Switzerland said the bitcoin payment option is available for all its non-life products. Life insurance products do not support the option for "regulatory reasons."

"This is AXA's response to growing demand from its customers for alternative payment solutions, with new technologies playing an ever-greater role," said Claudia Bienentreu, head of open innovation at AXA Switzerland.

The company has partnered with Swiss crypto broker Bitcoin Suisse for the initiative, meaning bitcoin payments would go to Bitcoin Suisse and be converted into Swiss francs for AXA Switzerland.

According to a recent report from Reuters, General Motors joins a growing list of major companies investigating regular implementation of the popular cryptocurrency.

Last month, during GM’s Q4 2020 earnings call, General Motors CEO Mary Barra said that the automaker had no plans to invest in bitcoin, but would continue to evaluate whether further interest was warranted.

“We don’t have any plans to invest in bitcoin, so full stop there,” Barra said when asked about GM’s interest in the cryptocurrency. “This is something we’ll monitor, and we’ll evaluate, and if there’s strong customer demand for it in the future, there’s nothing that precludes us from doing that.”
