Hit 2M net worth yesterday and have been living in a HCOL. We are DINKs with both of us in tech.
Think this is good enough to take a break from the usual grind for 6 months, may be start something new of our own?
EDIT: this is a joint net worth, no plans to have kids, this screenshot is from mint (going to work until end of March), this is not about retiring, but taking a break for 6 months and start something new of our own.

Not using uber anymore
kstraa @ Microsoft
I took ride to airport with uber driver and she told me for a drive that I was paying 75$ she was getting 23$. And she showed me when the ride completed. On the way back home I took lyft and asked the driver the same question. Lyft offered 40$ for 64$ ride which is reasonable.
Uber is just exploiting drivers IMHO.
I am only taking Lyft from now on
Edit: The uber driver was all 5 stars. The lyft driver also said, he does not do uber because they pay way low. So every one here thinking it was that specific uber driver being paid low, that is not the case. Next time you ride an uber ask the driver, you will feel tempted to tip them better

Which month will housing market crash this year?
SnapScore @ Snap
I want to buy a 4 bedroom home in Palo Alto best school district. I am sitting with 1M cash.
My realtor says it’s very likely to happen this year. So I am sitting with a lot of cash waiting for it. My realtor said he timed the market last crash in 2008 and he’s very confident on this one.
Does anyone know which day/month the crash is expected?

Do men in tech not get why women don't want kids?
mainrole @ New
Why would she give up her career and financial independence to do the harder job of serving you, doing all the housework and raising 1-2 kids? You think you deserve all this just for paying the bills... And now you even want a prenup for your housewife? What a deal.
It's a terrible trade for anyone with common sense to take. No one is incentivized to give that much for so little gain. Economic common sense. No one wants to give up their career for YOU to pass on your legacy. Even if she becomes a cat lady, like so many of you think is an insult, she still can get laid any time (maybe that's why you're mad).
Hence why you're single. Natural selection at its finest, no man "deserves a woman" buddy.
Good luck out there being a cheap, stingy, misogynist SWE. Thankfully those genes won't pass on.

Tucker Carlson and Putin interview
🥜 TC&bold @ Micron
How did you feel the interview went? Imo, Tucker did well except for a few simplistic questions like being aChristian and involving in war, AI taking over us, nuclear war, nuclear war!!, China the boogeymaaaan etc. He tried to throw Kamala Harris under bus and it felt petty. When interviewing a president from an another country he should elevate himself from petty domestic political fights. Anyways, that being said, Putin came across as highly intelligent man with an encyclopedic knowledge of history. He recognizes the slowly changing world order that’s why he is unafraid. He recognizes the American weakness of pressuring, bombing and bullying their way out of intricate situations and how immature and unsustainable that is for the long run. How the country is so debt laden but average elector does not have much say in that, etc. Average Americans who seek truth should watch this interview. If you have not watched don’t bother to make comments. Don’t be closed minded. Nothing is black and white. There is no God and Satan (lol).

Coworker literally just disappeared
UwQH23 @ Amazon
So my coworker quite literally just randomly stopped showing to work and was fired... doesn't respond to anything on LinkedIn, nor texts or calls. My other team mates tried too.
Anyone ever had this happen? Kinda worried about him. If my team was toxic af I would understand rage quiting and ghosting everyone but my team definitely isn't like that so I'm confused..

Wife’s manager is smoking in meetings
slickback9 @ Google
My wife’s manager is fully remote, and apparently sometimes sneaks a cigarette during long meetings.
My wife thinks it’s very unprofessional behaviour and for some reason is extremely agitated about this. Personally I really don’t care and I have no idea why anyone would. This has sparked a 3 day debate between us that we are hoping blind can settle for us.
Neither one of us is a smoker.
Granted it does not impact performance, if the person in the comfort of their own home wants to smoke a cigarette, why not? If anything, kudos for them for fully utilising remote privileges. Not so long ago people use to do this in the office and in person, so not sure what’s the big problem.
Wife thinks that the manager should be a role model and a leader. It is not professional to eat during a meeting so it’s definitely not professional to smoke. It is a really bad habit and signals to people you do not care about working.

Luck is a huge factor
xzxzxx @ Figma
I’ve been in a few late stage startups now, one IPO’ed and stock didn’t do well, and now Figma obviously the deal fell through at the end.
You basically just have to get lucky. We make our own luck to an extent for sure, I’ve put myself in the position and took risk, but the coin just doesn’t land right for most people.
This is kinda obvious, but when you see people walking away with millions from some late stage startup they joined, they aren’t genius, just got luckier.
Of course if you stay safe in big corp, you aren’t taking any risks anyway and luck doesn’t factor as much.

Google-i-ness Interview: the f^%# is that?
NullTrace @ ByteDance
I passed 4 technical interviews at Google. Currently I am a 3-1 in ByteDance. TC: 575K. Now the recruiter came back and said the technical part is done but the last interview is to check my ‘googliness’. He said… well he said a lot … can any of those who have passed this, tell me, how to prepare for it and what’s the thing they want to listen.

What do Meta engineers do?
menndnfnfn @ Citadel
I work at a HFT (not Cit) and have interviewed a bunch of Meta employees. They have impressive claims on their resume (boosted engagement by X%, saved Y% in capacity, removed Z% of bad content, etc).
However, when you actually ask them questions about their work they know nothing. I had one interviewee tell me they made a new recommendation model but couldn’t tell me what type of model it was other than “some ML model”, or how they chose their features, or how they got their training data. Some would explain how their systems work using Facebook tooling terminology and couldn’t even explain to me what these tools actually do. Others wouldn’t even know the traffic or storage volume they deal with on a daily basis.

Ok. Can We Tech Workers Unionize Already?!?
FHAs14 @ Deloitte
So—now that WE tech workers (of all levels, manager, IC, FAANG, non-FAANG, Mag7, etc.) know for a fact that we are NO different than other workers—can we unionize already? Like, what more proof do our “dumb asses” need that we NEED to unionize the tech industry? We. Need. To. Unionize. The. Tech. Industry. Yesterday. Anyone making more than 200K doesn’t need to vote or comments. If you make that kind of money, you don’t need a union. This is only for the “salt-of-the-Earth” people who actually do the work that matters.

Made a few mistakes and I take responsibility
buttcoiner @ ex-Amazon
I’m sorry I made a few mistakes over the last couple of years. I was under tremendous pressure and I fked up key architectural decisions for short term gains. I know I could’ve done better and taken a longer term perspective, but I didn’t.
Hence I’ve taken the difficult decision to walk out my manager, skip and our director today to repent for my mistakes. I can’t thank them enough for all they’ve done to support me throughout this difficult phase. I wish them the very best of luck and I’ll recommend them to everyone in my network.

Low performer on the team
UFVn20 @ Adobe
My new hire of 7 months is a low performer (examples below). I can’t PIP them because I don’t know if I will get backfill. Also because their work does help me free up my bandwidth somewhat.
What would you do? This is a non tech role.
- Does well with straightforward projects
- Does not do well with complex projects. Proposal has so many typos, logic gaps, lacks data and polish
(I have to spend a lot of time giving feedback)
- often doesn’t provide clear status of things or it takes a while to finish something
- enjoys doing simple logistical projects
- repeatedly misses what I said. Then they say I didn’t provide enough visibility
- they are generally a nice person and open for feedback. Mixed improvements after my feedback however

Why do people say I own a house when they are on mortgage
wHNu56 @ Microsoft
Every time I talk to somebody that says I bought a house, I always find it admiring how they were able to achieve that big goal. But a few minutes in the conversation, I realize they have 25 years left of a mortgage loan before they legally can say they own the house.

MSFT pays peanuts but allows WFH
I used my WFH time to work on my side business over the last 6 months which brings me to this fruitful day.
Day #3 of being monetized: made $155 today
Day #2: $90 ish
Day #1: $50 ish
If you aren’t leveraging WFH yet, and if you get 🥜 from employer… maybe think like me. 🙃
Btw I have not used msft resources to build this. Only used msft time. But how will they ever know? 😂#personalfinance

Depressed (and broke) startup ceo
jjtjeus36 @ New
At 33:
TC: $400k (Midwest), working for a financial institution
NW: $800k, no real estate
Ivy League MBA
I saw a market need, confirmed it with user research, moved to Bay Area and launched a company with own money, then raised from VC, hired more, and reached thousands of users across the US.
In the meantime, I lost my brother in an accident. I couldn’t meet up with him just before, because I had a big deadline for a large contract. We didn’t close the contract anyway. Now we run out of money, and can’t raise more - „bad market, show more traction, we bet on AI.” The team left, 3 people still standing out of 25 a few months back. Super depressed atm, but I still believe in the solution.
At 36:
TC: $0
NW: $50k, still no real estate
My 2cents:
- never bootstrap with your money as if you’re an angel investor
- don’t pay decent employee salary if you can’t yet afford any salary for yourself. no one will remember that except for your wallet.
- startup or not, your life and family have higher priority. hustle culture works only to a certain extent

I cut ties with friends who transition to SDM at Amazon
BGfT25 @ ex-Amazon
I have a friend since 15+ years who I never really liked as much, but was still in touch nevertheless. Recently he transitioned from L6 SDE (which he was at only for 3 months lol) to L6 SDM.
I'll be honest, I lost all respect for him due to that.
I had huge respect for him when he got promoted to L6 SDE, and celebrated it with him because I was truly happy for him. But, as soon as I saw his post on LinkedIn about transitioning to management I was like "Ew, huge downgrade in career, respect and as a human".
Amazon makes SDMs do some sketchy and toxic things which we all know about, and Amazon SDMs are often (secretly) banned from several places. Personally, I feel if someone is a manager at Amazon for more than 18 months, they are not the best of humans. Yeah, humans - because they willingly want to continue being in a toxic role.
I haven't spoken to him since (been several months), didn't congratulate him and plan to slowly drift away from a 15+ year friendship.

What is the point of all this
papi-jhapi @ Meta
Been thinking about life recently. We're taught in school to work hard, get good grades so that we can have a professional certification/college degree and then be able to attain the promised land of work. Then we work, with the ups and downs, job changes, relocations, layoffs, etc. 30+ years of this until we squeeze enough money in those brokerage accounts to have them work for us and enjoy the rest of our life. Then we retire for some period of time and get some golden years before health goes downhill -- and we die. And most of us live lives of quiet desperation in the meantime.
Being a bit philosophical here. What is the point of life? Friends/family/hobbies/relationships? Those are important, I agree -- but family alone doesn't give life inherent meaning. Neither does a particular hobby, nor friendships all by itself.

East Asians look down on Southeast Asians?
WtTX36 @ Splunk
-East Asian = Chinese, Japanese, Korean
-Southeast Asian = Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Laos, etc.
As a Vietnamese person myself, I’ve felt a discreet sense of superiority from East Asians. Most of the times it’s not exactly vocalized, but I felt the sense of disapproval from East Asians. Like they wanted me to know that Vietnamese are not the same as them.
In my high school, the Koreans got along very well with the Chinese. The small number of Japanese also fit into their group, but the disdain towards Vietnamese and other Southeast Asians was quite palpable, even if it wasn’t as obvious.
Any other Southeast Asians have similar experiences?
