Lost in codebase
pot.luck @ Amazon
I'm a senior SDE six months in on my current assignment. The codebase I'm working with is massive and is primarily C++ based. It takes me hours to understand call hierarchy of functions and which attributes are encapsulated under which structures to make progress towards a feature. I sometimes feel I can save hours if my team members can direct me to correct code pointers but they just ask me to use code search and even ridicule me for needing too much help as a senior.
I feel quite low about myself. I can't push too much as I have young kids who need my time. I was an L64 at Microsoft before and was doing fairly well but I am struggling as an L6 here. Am I just an incompetent engineer who doesn't belong at AWS? What should I do? Also, the L7 on my team kind of complained to my manager that my velocity is slow and my code is sloppy for an L6. I just feel terrible.

Why do people pretend climate change isn’t real?
jpmc_ds @ ex-JPMorgan Chase
I’ve looked around a lot of “climate skeptic” websites and arguments but never found anything that makes sense. Dumping millions of tons of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere constantly would obviously change the temperature.
I’ve also seen people say “there’s nothing we can do about it!” but that seems peabrained; there are tons of things we can do and a lot of them are actually good for the economy (e.g. building highspeed rail and bike lanes, solar panels, wind farms etc.).

Prove Me Wrong: How is buying a car better than leasing?
cILt56 @ Best Buy
Let's take the following condition:
- Vehicle: Tesla Model Y
- Lease / Buy Term: 3 / 6 years
- Yearly Mileage: 12000 miles
Cost on Lease:
- Down payment: $1,000
- Acquisition + Disposition fees: $1,200
- Wall Connector $475
- Mobile Connector $230
- Order Fee $250
- Monthly Cost: $447 * (36 months)
========================================
Total: $19,247
Cost on Buy:
- Down payment: $1,000
- Destination fee: $1,390
- Wall Connector $475
- Mobile Connector $230
- Order Fee $250
- Monthly Cost: $731 * (72 months)
- Resale Value (after 6 years): $24,413
========================================
Total: $31,564
Total Cost After 7 years (Lease): $19,247 * 2 = $38,494
Total Cost After 7 years (Buy): $31,564
Before you start to judge the actual math for all the above costs, let me say one thing... I know there are various costs (like taxes and maintenance) that I have not even included at all, but even with just what I have included above, how is leasing not the cheaper and better option for most folks?
Now consider that buying a vehicle and owning it for at least 7 years or more can add up even more maintenance costs in the long run. With leasing, I know there is a limit for how many miles you can drive, but isn't 12000 miles still quite a lot for most folks? Also, I know the total cost is slightly higher after 7 years on a lease, but please kindly consider the points below before you just consider the actual math.
Here are the kicker arguments that I have though...
1. let's just say the cost somehow is still a little expensive for a lease in the long run, why would anyone keep a car for longer than 3 to 5 years nowadays anyway? After 5 years or so, most cars start to look a little beat up and old, to be frank, so we all want a little refresh, don't we?
2. usually, more maintenance and other unexpected costs come up after 6 years of owning a vehicle, so why would I keep my car for longer and continue to pay the monthly costs and also save up more for ongoing maintenance costs?
3. leased cars are brand new and we get to use a brand new car every 3 years. So, in general, the maintenance costs are avoided entirely. Plus, a lot of the early maintenance costs that are needed are usually taken care of by the dealer as a courtesy.
4. let's say I love the car that bought and I keep it for 6+ years, most cars will lose nearly 40% of their value by then. So, even if I can sell it, I won't make up a lot anyway. In the above example, I would say I was generous in giving the resale value of $24,413 for the Tesla Model Y after 6 years. All I am asking is, what's the point of owning a vehicle for the long run anyway? We all know that 99% of cars depreciate over time, so sooner or later, your car's value will go down to 0.
I would just ask myself a single question... if I could get a new car every 3 years and not have to deal with most, if not all car maintenance for the rest of my life, would I be open to paying a little extra? I would think most people want less stress and less burden in their life as possible and paying a little extra to get rid of that is a great deal for most folks.
That's all I have. I am sure I may not have considered every single pros and cons of leasing vs. buying, but please prove me wrong... go!

There are 28 year old family doctors who make 500k. Specialists and aurgeons that make over 1 million. Even travelling nurses make 250k in Cali.
Just have some perspective before you say 100k, 200k, 300k is a lot. It's good money but it's not "a lot". Many of my college classmates went to med school, some smarter than me, some dumber. Their future is much brighter than mine meanwhile I don't even see a clear path to 400k.
And before you say our lifestyle is better, not really. With remote gone and every company overworking everyone, plus the looming risk of layoffs, leetcode interviews, shitty tooling and codebases, political coworkers, fighting over meaningless work, fighting bugs, tooling, infra just to be able to write code for 30 minutes each day. UNPAID overtime, UNPAID on-call. You know doctors make $1k per night of being available on-call even if they're not called. Meanwhile we do it for $0.
Meanwhile our paymasters make billions like they're mining it from the ground. Tech is a 90% labor-based industry and all profit is directly attributable to the exploitation of labor.
Demand. More. Money.

Should NATO countries pay their NATO bills?
EUISE @ Capital One
I find it hilarious how Leftists are crying about Trump pressuring freeloader countries to pay their bills. It's no surprise that all the "democratic socialist" countries are the ones falling short. I guess we know how they afford their socialism - they burden other countries with their costs.
Unironically that's a core tenant of socialism - make other people pay for your bills. And now they are crying about the idea of having to pay their bills.
Edit:
To be clear, I am not advocating to disband NATO or for the US to leave it. But if countries continue to take advantage of the US and subsidize their socialism, then it should be entertained.

Cold turkey from alcohol results after 14 days!
DLBt56 @ New
Male age 31
Just wanted to share my progress - maybe it will help someone out there dealing with an alcohol problem.
Heavy daily drinker for the last two years. Minimum bottle of wine or 6-8 beers per night. Gained 40 pounds.
After 2 weeks going cold turkey, here are some Fitbit results. It was rough the first two days, then smooth sailing. No urge for alcohol anymore.
- Resting heart rate dramatically reduced (improved) from 75 bpm 1 year average to 62 bpm in 14 days
- Sleep score 42 average improved to 86 average after 14 days. More deep sleep and REM. Less awakenings
- Mood significantly improved
- lost 7 pounds (mostly water weight but feel way less bloated). Eating healthier definitely helps. No late night DoorDash garbage food
Now, I hope to incorporate cardio and maybe some strength training to get back to my normal self.
Hope to keep it going and stay away from that poison 🙏🏻#fitness #diet #nutrition #alcohol

Bay Area Rental property
Hsqz04 @ Amazon
Just bought a property in the Bay Area for $1.45m. Got 6% rate and put 20% down which means my monthly mortgage payment is $6800. I intend on staying here for 2-3 years and then converting it to rental. Rental income in the area is about $3400 after property management fees. I have other investments worth about $1.1m. I am assuming my property taxes and insurance will be covered by mortgage and tax deductions I get every year. So in order to hold the property all I need is $3400 X 12 = $40,800. Accounting for a 5% vacancy that would mean $42,840 per year. This would be just 42840/1100000 = 4% return on my investments. So as long as my investments appreciate 4% per year I can keep the property. Ofc maintenance expenses not accounted but assuming I just put my money in ETFs that have historically returned 12-13% returns I will have plenty of room for any maintenance expenses. Does the above calculations make sense?
Tc 450k
EDIT: If/when the rates go down and I refinance the calculations make even more sense

NW $2m. Where to move outside the USA if Trump wins?
DarkTaylor @ Apple
I'm making a contingency plan to leave the USA if Trump were to win and end our democracy.
The criteria are:
- Democracy with freedom of speech
- Ease of migration for an American speaking English
- Not a nation that Russia would likely attack once Trump disbands NATO
- $2m should go a long way, preferably allow retirement
Suggestions?
