Approaching 1M net worth in late thirties

poverty_NW @ Google

I don't know who to tell, I know I can't. Can't even tell the wife since she's already shocked that my 401k, brokerages have 500k there. Another 400k or so in home equity. Will hit 1M NW within the next month or so after bonus and stock vests

Doesn't feel like I can let off the brakes yet. I'm telling myself that I'll loosen the belt once I hit 1M in investments (excluding home equity) but I knowing myself, I don't trust myself to ever ease up and enjoy life.

I know 1M is nothing for Blinders, but I got a late start in the FAANG game.
How did you train yourself to enjoy life guilt free?

Married with 2 kids. Single income. 400k TC

Low TC is crushing my spirit

depppppp @ Undisclosed

I’m almost 30. Did a damn PhD and then started working in a small company. I’m fully remote but have to live in Bay Area because of my spouse’s job. I’m making 150 k. This low TC is really bothering me and I think I’ll go insane if I don’t find a new job in the next 6 months.

I’ve done 400 LC problems and applied hundreds of jobs. I get interviews here and there but it doesn’t yield to an offer. Anyway most of the jobs that I find are like 180 k and hybrid which is not a significant improvement from my current situation. I’m looking for something around 250 k. Any advice? Suggestion?

WLB companies with 400K pay

house.bble @ Amazon

I spent quite a lot at Amazon, worked very hard over last few years. Want to move to not so fast moving companies with a decent pay. Which companies pay 400k TC for a senior engineer that has good wlb? Willing to take a small paycut.

TC : 450K

WLB - 35 hrs or less work week.

NVIDIA Employee Badge saved me from a speeding ticket

speeder309 @ NVIDIA

Got pulled over for going 95mph on the highway the other day. Asked to flash my driver’s ID.

Was annoyed that this low-prestige police officer (which company do police even WORK for?) dared to pull ME, an NVIDIA employee, over.
So instead of my driver’s license, I brandished my NVIDIA employee ID as a statement.
As if to say: “I work at NVIDIA, lil punk. Yeah That’s right. Where do YOU work?”

Promptly received a bashful apology and was let go, amidst a look of utter, absolute awe from the officer.
“Oh my god… you’re an NVIDIA employee? Today’s marks my luckiest day on the job, after 25 years!”
No ticket, no fine, nothing.

I drove off feeling like the Queen of England.
NEVER underestimate the power of tech.

Leetcode. Do I really have to? [non-FAANG]

plJL74 @ Intuit

Android dev here. I don’t need to FAANG, but I’d like to target same tier as Intuit or one tier up.

For mid to senior mobile dev roles are your companies still in the habit of asking LC for technical screens or as part of an onsite/final round?

And don’t get me wrong, FAANG would be amazing, just a lot of demands on my time right now and I don’t know that I can invest time needed to pull it off.

Edit: Seems like a resounding yes across the board. Guess I’ll just paint my ass white and start running with the antelope.

Sundar needs to go

RTQH04 @ Google

As an employee, I'm not loving the change in culture and losing my teammates to layoffs, but I understand we're a publicly traded company and there's no smoke without fire (i.e though sad from a human point of view, we're definitely bloated in some areas).

As a shareholder, we're underperforming the SP500 (-1% YTD vs +7%), our competitors (Meta and Microsoft both up double digits) and this week marks the second product launch failure in under 6 months. The loss of prestige the company has suffered in the past 18 months is hard to quantity yet, but will probably be an MBA case study of corporate blunder 10 years from now. We're a trillion dollar company that was caught with its pants on its knee by a 700-employee startup, who has shipped a better product that's directly threatening our core business.

Ben Thompson put it best:

«I recounted in a recent article how Nadella changed the company’s relationship to Windows, unlocking the astronomical growth that has happened under his watch, including the company’s position in AI.

Google, quite clearly, needs a similar transformation: the point of the company ought not be to tell users what to think, but to help them make important decisions, as Page once promised. That means, first and foremost, excising the company of employees attracted to Google’s power and its potential to help them execute their political program, and return decision-making to those who actually want to make a good product. That, by extension, must mean removing those who let the former run amok, up to and including CEO Sundar Pichai. The stakes, for Google specifically and society broadly, are too high to simply keep one’s head down and hope that the San Francisco Board of Supervisors magically comes to its senses.»

Our leadership has a fiduciary duty to maximize value for its shareholders, and it's failing.

Sundar needs to go.

Depressed at house selling next door to mine

QLfU84 @ New

I bought my house last year at $1m - it was OK, looks like the whole thing got the landlord special in terms of renovations, I was in a hurry to buy either way so I settled.

Recently the house right next door to mine went up for sale at $900k, fully remodeled, 500 sqft more, and better layout than mine.

I feel angry, mad and depressed all at the same time.

Elon was right again

sgdyeiurj @ Undisclosed

Elon was and remains right. Cuts are necessary.

You can easily cut 80% of your staff with no major harm to the business as an ongoing concern. Twitter is humming along and has new features at a rate not seen in years.

Which begs the question, wtf were people doing at Twitter before?

I can guarantee that this is probably true for every major company, some more than others.

I am 26 with no money in my 401k or stocks, how bad is this? Can I bounce back or too late?

zingdr24 @ GrubHub

So I am currently 26 and over the weekend have realized I am an idiot.

I introduced myself to this app and Reddit finance subreddits, and am questioning how much money I have lost and how far behind I am.

I got into tech industry 2 years ago as a SWE, and was just living check to check and putting rest in my savings. I live in Chicago as HCOL.

I want to bounce back, but realize I may be too late in terms of the top level gains some people have here but want at-least be stable. I know I have given up a lot of money.

How do I change my life around financially, and how should I change my allocations to be financially successful at 35 - 40? Open to all advice.

Refusing OpenAI offer: stupid?

yIAW85 @ Google

L6, SWE, non-ML, in a supportive organization doing a solid amount of work but nothing too crazy. Not overly attached to my role, I understand Google can reorg me and/or lay me off anytime.

I have an offer from OpenAI, research organization, infra SWE role, for a 3X multiple of my current comp (clearly a lot of it is paper money, so not exactly a fair comparison).

I am thinking of not pursuing it. I realized I probably made a mistake in applying to the company and I didn’t think things through. I assumed in the lucky event of getting an offer I would have accepted it without hesitation, but once I faced the actual decision it turned out more complicated.

I had a good experience with the interview process and the people I talked there, but as I seriously contemplated the offer for the past few days I realized the most important aspect is WLB. I like having time every day to read, working out, cultivate the relationship with my partner, travel 3 times a year internationally to visit my aging parents, 2+ vacations, and I am not getting any younger at 37. In this job I would have to commute long hours to SF from the South Bay, work much longer and likely be stressed all the time.

I am trying to understand if this is a flight-not-fight reaction mostly driven by fear, but I don’t think so. If I close my eyes and I imagine my life in this new job, no excitement comes out of it. Just the insane amount of time wasted on Caltrain and the weekends burned working. In fact, this whole process made me realize that my time might also be wasted at Google and that I might want to quit soon and take an extended and possibly permanent break, I just need to find something to “retire” to, something to keep me busy just a few hours a day to live a balanced and relaxed life.

My financial situation is fairly stable, I have $5M in Vanguard index funds (mostly VTI/VXUS and some treasuries) and my after tax yearly expenses are about $60k (I do not have kids). No debt. Immigrant now naturalized US citizen. EU citizen as well.

Thoughts?

How many of you NVIDIA employees have paid off your mortgages thus far?

allinfan @ Google

Even if you just got a $200K new hire RSU grant in 2019, it's worth $4M now. For higher level employees, obviously you are set for life and probably don't have to work anymore. Man if it were me I'd pay off all my loans and be debt free and just work for fun.

For people who think California is a high tax state

DbMc27 @ Palo Alto Networks

I just did my parent's 2023 tax returns. Their 2023 CA income tax liability is $387 on a gross income of ~110k, making their effective state tax rate 0.36%.

Math:
110k gross (mostly from IRA withdrawals, investments, and social security) - 40k social security income which is not state taxable - 5k treasury bond/ETF dividends which is not state taxable - ~11k CA standard deduction = 54k of California taxable income. This calculates to be about $963 tax, then subtract 2x $288 personal exemption = $387. They also don't work so they pay no CASDI.

They own their home and are on Medicare so the two biggest life expenses are taken care of. 110k is plenty for them to enjoy Bay Area retiree life.

Put on PIP when I shared I’m pregnant

amazon8678 @ Amazon

In December, I informed my manager about my pregnancy, and during the same conversation, I was advised to consider resigning due to potential stress during the PIP process. Despite this, I chose to proceed with focus plan, where I performed well on the two projects I was given. But I did have one miss out that caught my manager’s attention. Recently, I expressed the stress that I'm facing and my intention to take a leave of absence, but my manager suggested to wait till he talks to HR. Today he came back to me saying that I am being put on pivot because I had one big miss out and I should consider taking severance and leave. I told him that I want to take leave of absence but he wants me to take severance and leave so that he can backfill my position. I sought his approval for a leave of absence, aiming to maintain a positive relationship and not ending in bad terms. I know I acted stupid but I did not want to shock him by taking leave of absence all of a sudden. He said let’s meet early next week to discuss the options. I want to take leave of absence as it is my right for taking it for prenatal care. How can I emphasize the importance of prenatal care by taking leave of absence over leaving with severance? I just do not want to end this in bad terms by offending anybody. Or should I just leave?

Can I negotiate my severance?

Can I afford a Porsche 911 4S

sugarcoat7 @ Amazon

I badly want a Porsche 911 4S - it's been my dream car ever since I would see few of them in the Microsoft Building 36 parking lot everyday. My boss had a manual 2016 one and it was a beauty. I support my parents as they don't work - the rental income pays for their monthly expenses. Parents live in our home in a different city, my wife and I live on rent.

I'm currently an L6 SDM @ amzn - TC ~400
NW ~ 1.3M (equity in 2 homes, personal and rental, 401k and cash savings)

My wife makes 80-100k
Family income 475-500k
Age 29
YOE: 7

Car costs around 120-180k; depending on config and whether I buy new or CPO. Test drove a 2018 Turbo with &lt 15k miles for 150k. Any 911 owners can comment on their experiences?

Jealous of over night millionaires

LnCE50 @ Microsoft

Tl;dr: This is a rant

I can’t get out of jealousness of people who achieved 1m+ nw recently due to crazy stock growth recently. One of my friend has been working in nvidia since 2019. Another has been in Amazon since 2014. Started in Meta last year.

What have been I doing so far? I jumped around few other companies but did not get a lot of money. Did not get promoted. Did not get 100k raise. My tiny RSU grants only up 20% since I joined. I still cannot afford a house in seattle area after moving to US 5 yrs ago.

I know it sounds stupid. It’s first world problem. I know it does not happen to everyone. I know some people get laid off and even having a job is a thing to appreciate. But it feels like everyone except me is making huge money while I’m rotting here.

Fuck. I just can’t shake it off my head.
