Here are some signs your boss will fire you

I mentor a few people and gathered the top 4 early signs that I wish they told me before so they could reverse the trend before it was too late. When you are served with the PIP document, it's almost guaranteed a done deal. There are some earlier signs that you should watch out for.
1) Situation: You mention you are overloaded with stuff
Ideal answer: Let's work through it, maybe deprioritize some stuff and get the most important done
Bad boss: yeah unfortunately the team is overloaded, please get it done (shows indifference, tells you to figure it out)
2) Situation: You mention the task is complex and needs more time
Ideal answer: Please explain to me how it is complex and whether there is anything I can do to help (shows support)
Bad boss: look, I know it's hard, but do it all (indifference)
3) Situation: You are escalating on an issue that someone will escalate on you
Ideal answer: Thanks for the heads up. Tell me where you messed up and where the other one messed up. Let's figure out how this doesn't happen again.
Bad boss: what the hell did you do? (only takes the other person's side)
4) Situation: Lots of roles being randomly opened that are too similar to your job in LCOL
Ideal answer: (?? hoping there is a good reason)
Bad boss: will lie to your face

Inheritance tax in the US is way too low

First of all, the exemption is $13M. Basically $26M for a married couple.
Second, the % tax is supposed to be 40% but the effective rate is 16-17% after deductions.
Meanwhile I’m paying 50% effective tax rate here in CA for my hard earned income? Wtf did these kids do to deserve a $13M tax break?

I’ve told this story before, but I wanted to give an update. I’m a staff level engineer with top tier experience at AI/ML. I was founding engineer at a major ML company before ML was cool and worked in deep learning at Google.
During my interviews I convince clueless founders I will build out their whole company and ML infrastructure and everything in between to make them gazillions of dollars for a measly 250k salary.
So far I’ve been fired 3x this year and I’m keeping the ball rolling by landing a new job every 3-5 weeks after. These startups always hire me as the project lead, team manager, or founding/staff engineer and I just do nothing and take 4-6 months to complete 2 weeks of work then get fired, find a new job, and repeat. I usually start job hunting about 3 weeks before they fire me giving me time to always have income rolling in.
I’m starting to worry about my reputation in this space because this is the 6th time I’ve been fired in the past 2.5 years, but they don’t really know to check since the old startups aren’t listed anyways.
Since then I’ve achieved a lot in my personal life but at the cost of destroying multiple startups. One is officially dead now and I do attribute my lack of effort using 6 months of their runway. I suspect more startups I’ve joined will die.
Doing this my personal life has 10x since I’ve been focused on studying new skills and dating more women. I suspect will keep continuing this for another year. My biggest fear is hiring slows down in AI like it has for new grads and I have to do real work again. I’m sick of the matrix. I can’t bring myself to do more slave calls or the 9-5 wagecuck life.
I want to start a company but this is better work life balance and I don’t feel bad about scamming these useless startups that have no business in raising.

None of you guys make data center or kernel level optimization. None of you guys make a new type of cutting edge database. None of you has done extensive research into a subject matter to a point you know the best in a domain this world. They deserve the money.
Or if you have preciously founded companies that generate at least tens of millions of recurring profits. Then you deserve the salary because you pose the possibility to overthrow your employer if you wanted to

My Sunday resignation letter

Here is what I have in my draft:
“With this email I am submitting my resignation, effective immediately.
I thank you and everybody for giving me the opportunity, but this role is ultimately too much pressure and expectations. I have, quite literally, crashed and burned, and I need time to recover my mental health. I am not able to take one more day like this.

I have enough savings to stay afloat for a few years, I’ll figure something out that does not involve a tech job ever again, so burning bridges is not a big deal.

Got into a fight with husband in front of friends

We came to Yellowstone and rented a cabin with a few friends in. Heavily wooded area. We just got back home at 1 AM after dinner.
My husband wanted to light a fire pit to make smores at 1 am. Kids were too tired and didn’t want to do it. I said don’t do it n he didn’t listen and still put on the fire. It was getting bigger n sparks were flying everywhere. I yelled at him to switch it off n he didn’t listen. I got scared n yelled at him in front of our friends. He got mad n left the place in his car leaving the fire unattended. I ran the water hose n put off the fire.
Now it’s a very big embarrassment in front of our friends that we fought and his ego is hurt.
Did I do wrong? He was just not listening to me when I was trying to talk through to him.

I have done probably over 50 onsite interviews since mid 2022 and I still haven’t gotten a single offer. I know I’m not bad because I have seen most engineers around me and most are absolutely mediocre and I have no problem doing well in technical coding interviews.
I had just a tiny bit of hope until now that I may get one offer and be a senior and maybe get a decent pay bump but I have now completely given up. I mean literally completely. I will not even bother to apply anymore because it’s just not worth it at this point. I have been ignoring recruiters in my inbox for a week now.

Unlike Americans, who enjoy a high level of personal freedom and independence, Europoors are stuck in a world full of rules and bureaucracy. In America, people chase their dreams with fewer restrictions, embracing their individuality. Europoors, on the other hand, will pay so much tax for some reason without opposing it, and seem to follow a set path, making them appear like background characters in their own lives.

Married, 51 years old. Wife and I both have been working. We lived nicely and spent nicely (house with a view, regular international vacations, flashy cars etc) but also consistently saved from day 1. Expenses have always been joint but we saved whatever was left in our respective accounts. Both of us never thought about NW that much. Since I turned 50, we hired a financial advisor to help with comprehensive retirement planning. He gave us homework to enter all our assets and liabilities in a single place. We did and to our surprise we are worth about $7M (about $2m in real estate, $4.5in stocks/funds and $500k in cash). And We thought we were around $4M. Advisor says we can retire anytime we want.
May sound like a flex post, but genuinely happy and genuinely confused.

Microsoft and Satya is 100% at fault.
- Satya removed people from Windows and heavily disinvested their QA and testing procedures for Windows. App compatibility testing was part of this. Windows also became so bad over time that lead to rise of companies like CrowdStrike
- bad kernel code from third party happens with every OS. But reboot handles disabling of continuously crashing apps.
- App updates- macOS handles this much better for third party apps by staggering it. If you are running a platform, it is your responsibility to make sure one single app cannot bring down entire platform

How Can I Find a Wife in China?

Asking here because I am one of those ABCs who can't find a wife in the United States. I know many of you will say to change myself -- that's outside the scope of this post and it doesn't work anyhow. I fully own the fact that I am a loser who can't find a wife in the country that I have lived all my life--I'm a LOSER I get it and it's a ME problem. Now that I have fully admitted all my faults, I don't want to see any comments around how it's a YOU problem or that I need to dress better, work out, go out more, blah blah blah. Women in this country are too good for me and I'm not good enough. Now, my question is how can I find someone in China? I do speak Chinese (not write though), am in my mid-thirties, am your typical nerd, and am medium height (under 6ft). Does anyone here have experience looking for a wife in China as an expat? Any advice will be appreciated.

Got laid off on h1b. My perm was in final stage and would be revoked soon. I was walked into a room where Telugu director informed me about my layoff. I was calm and composed . I even thanked him for the opportunity, apologized if I had made any mistakes during my tenure. Was it a mistake to be respectful to these a**l who laid me off, screwed my green card process, literally ended my life in US. Should I have thrown my badge and walked out of room ?

Talking point like gender and racial equality, police brutality and teenage transgender suicidal rates are just distractions. Liberals want to keep its voting base angry at made up issues so no one can disrupt the money flow.
They don't want you to ask real questions like:
Why is San Francisco building no new housing even as homeless people roam the city
Why is the permitting process in California so cumbersome even as Gavin Newsom rant and rave about the homeless epidemic
Why does it take 30 years to build a high speed rail from northern to southern California if climate change is an existential threat
Why are inner city schools failing even as real estate cost skyrocket? Your real estate tax is suppose to fund local schools, right?
The answer to the above questions are pretty obvious. The money flow has been established already and actually solving these problems require the money flow to be disrupted and we obviously can't have that. I mean, how else will we pay the Clinton's and Obama's 6 figure speaking fee.

Reasons to not buy a house in all cash

I've been thinking about buying a house in the East Bay. I'm strongly considering liquidating my stocks and buying a place in all cash. My thinking process is:
1. Having worked at meta for a couple of years, i have 40% meta stocks and rest in VTI, enough to sell all and pay for a house < 1.5M
2. The current interest rates result in a high monthly payment and I think it is unlikely we will see ~4% rates in the next 2 years.
3. Not selling all the stocks, taking a loan and keeping a portion of the stocks (in meta / VTI) doesn't seem to me very appealing. Especially since the overall market has been quite bullish for some time. Moreover, I could invest upcoming vests, remaining money after expenses in VTI/VOO, to be part and still invest in the stock market.
4. My reason to buy a house is an emotional one.
Blind family has been very insightful on a wide variety of aspects, I'm looking for any suggestions or help in identifying gaps in my thoughts.
In addition to this, I'm curious if folks who have bought houses in all cash could share pros / cons.

If only one person in a couple worked, as it was back in the days, all families would have less money. As a consequence the prices of everything would drop, so life would be more affordable, and unemployment would be reduced to almost zero, because of less competition. Additionally, one of the two parents would have the time to take care of the kids and the house, so families wouldn't spend money on daycare and nannies.
Modern family is a scam.

Feeling low and sad

I'm a mom of two kids and a woman in tech.
I had always been a topper of my school, college(went to a good college), and got married to love of my life. Joined as SWE at Microsoft and a lead right now. At work, I've always been a top performer.
Somewhere, I stopped being too ambitious and after I had kids and even before, gave everything to the family.
I let my husband switch jobs and he joined FAANG, I supported him at that time and took care of family when he wanted to switch, I remained in MS.
Today, he insulted me with arrogant behavior(not getting into details, related to my work and tech). I felt disrespectful.
I just closed my door, gave my baby to my mom,asking her to tc and my son stayed with my husband and asked them not to disturb me( in anger). I wanted to see if I had it in me - I solved a hard leetcode problem in the 1st attempt and could give a good detailed read on 3 system design questions, all in the span of 2-3 hours of focus time. That felt so good and like my old self.
I felt self sympathy on myself for always giving and never demanding anything back. Though I was always treated well and respected, being insulted today made me feel sad.
Just wanted to let this out :( I hope I take out time for myself and prepare and land job at FAANG and not always hold back myself.

For a typical ambitious and hardworking man, society is rigged against him. In his childhood, he works super hard to get good grades and get into a good college. After college, he works hard to get a good high paying job. At work, he works hard to make more money and raise his employment status. But after excelling at all of these, he finds that none of this helps his ability to find a mate and if anything puts him at a disadvantage, so he has to start from scratch all over again to compete in the dating market. This going through life in hard mode.

You still don’t fully grasp the severity of Crowdstrike outage

Since last night, 50 million+ windows computers crashed or saw the blue screen of death after the crowdstrike update. Some news outlets are reporting that the number is much much higher.
Steps to resolve -
1. Boot windows system in safe mode .
2. Delete crowd strike files
3. Restart
4. Repeat for every single crashed system in your company
5. Many companies don’t even allow employees to boot to safe mode and require decryption keys or other mechanism. Good luck fixing computers in these companies.
Do you think 100’s of thousands of people working at banks, restaurants, airlines etc knows how to boot into safe mode?
This outage will take days to resolve.
