Personally in my church the choir sing in the tones, the reader says everything in a neutral tone in our tradition. So I haven't learnt the tones by number, although you do tend to pick them up by memory after a while.

One way to learn, if you can sing, is to ask your priest it you can sing in the choir.

It's just a reader can only really say so much. All they are is people set aside to serve and read in the temple.

When it comes to tones etc a reader very well may be able to help.

But spiritual advice for reading psalms etc, all they can do is point to the writings of our clergy and saints or encourage you to speak to your priests.
